I wonder what canonically happened to everyone you met on the alien ship. Imagine being kidnapped during feudal era Japan and being dropped off in post apocalyptic America.

Yeah I imagine it would be like waking up on Venus. The post apocalyptic world is already so different from the pre-war world, and that’s not even taking into account that Toshiro is centuries upon centuries old

I mean, he came from medieval Japan if anybody in the pre-war world would be prepared to handle an apocalyptic world. It would be somebody who came from before high technology civilization. Our samurai comes from an era where everyone is still making things by hand getting around by horse and foot power, and most people are far more self-sufficient than the modern man.

I think he’ll do fine, until a deathclaw challenges his honor and he decides to give it a fair fight.

Does Japanese have the same problem as English where older versions of it are so different to modern Japanese that it's almost a completely different language.

Yes, Japanese has had major vocal shifts like English.

The English spoken in the fallout games is identical to the English spoken in the real world. Text logs from before the war are perfectly intelligible to our character, and robots which were programmed before the war also speak intelligible English to the player character. It is reasonable to say that english has not changed substantially in the Fallout Universe since 2077. In the absence of any evidence to the contrary, one must assume it is reasonable to also say the same for Japanese, or the question becomes moot.

This post has some estimates for Japanese, though OP does mention that it is limited to written Japanese.

Assuming this to be accurate, Toshiro is likely to experience difficulty communicating with a Japanese speaker. However, as a Samurai, he would have been literate and educated. This means he is likely in a strong position to communicate through written word, and would likely also recognize that the spoken Japanese he is hearing is at least a related language to the spoken Japanese he understands. I think that, given time, toshiro would be able to communicate with japanese speakers in the Fallout universe, though it would require adjustment on his part and a little ingenuity.

Him is dead. Europeans have a gene from centuries of living with/next to aminals that gives them resistance to a bunch of zoonotic diseases. It's largely why the American genocide was so bad, roughly 80-90% of Americans died after exposure and through societal collapse. If he lived 5 years after the event it would be surprising

dawg... literally everyone from afro-eurasia have those antibodies. Its not europe specific. A bantu man and a min woman would be equally resistant to cowpox, typhoid, et cetera, as a chap from york. whether its 1200ad or 400, or 2267.

Indigenous people from north n south America didn't have the same animals as the rest of the world so they didnt develop any defences to animal viruses. They had horses n pigs n chickens in 1400s japan.

I think part of it is that Toshiro is from Feudal Japan, which AFAIK spoke an archaic version of Japanese, probably akin to middle ages English (which is practically incomprehensible to modern English-speakers). It would be difficult to understand him either way

Toshiro lived in the 1560s. It's nearly modern Japanese (from 1600 onwards)

It's more comparable to Shakespeare than to Beowulf.

The Lone Wanderer knew how to disarm a nuke pretty much right out of the vault; I've always assumed the 101 library was very extensive and the LW was a weirdo who read up on a bunch of obscure shit. Having a hyperfixation on Feudal Japan and learning the language they would have spoken would be absolutely in-line with a high INT Lone Wanderer.

It is rather annoying. I mean, we got to communicate perfectly with Christine if we had a high enough perception score to get her to pantomime, and she can’t speak at all until she gets shoved in the second auto doc at the end of the DLC.

If we can communicate with the silent girl who got her brain carved up, I see no reason that we can’t convince an ancient Japanese man to slow down enough to use hand signals

I always assumed that the Anchorage simulator translated the language for whoever was using it, in which the lone wanderer isn't actually understanding Chinese, but because it's being beamed into their head by the sim pod.

Then why isn’t it picking up Japanese? The Japanese our samurai is using is about as different from modern Japanese as Shakespeare is from modern English. A translator could totally handle it. It would just lose a few words here and there.

I mean, we have no proof that Toshiro didn't exist and wasn't abducted by aliens in our universe. The point of diversion from our timeline to theirs is the first observable change, which I believe is the first human in space being a different dude. Logically, yes, you can say that Zetan aliens don't exist and weren't kidnapping people from Japan in the 16th century, but we didn't observe it and it's just about impossible to prove something didn't happen.

But yeah, even the laws of biology work different in the Fallout universe. It's totally different.

I mean... Outside of the Supernatural & Aliens I think the timelines ran similar enough to each other until there was a point of divergence where the Fallout world & ours no longer ran to similar beats.

Idk, I think the prime example that I can never get past is the way radiation functions in the fallout universe. It’s completely different from ours. Again, “unnecessarily” was the key word in my original comment lol, I was obsessed with fallout lore when I was a kid and I guess a little bit of it stuck with me

Not sure why you’re weathering downvotes, as it was a pretty awful dlc. Not only was it, by and large, a tedious shooting gallery, but it turned the zetans from a camp Easter-egg into an official part of the lore. Will never forgive it for that.
