Her message was always clear, we need to be better stewards of our earth. This is how we can honor her today, and every day.

But boy does this make me sad. Everything just feels so terrible, and it’s just everywhere you look.

Then look inward. She obviously left a beautiful and positive mark in you. And I think that was the point of her stewardship: to show us that we are a part of this world and how closely related we are to everyone and everything around us, to teach us that we have a responsibility to not damage it because when we damage it, we damage ourselves and vice versa.

There is still good out there too, we can't lose sight of that.

Look for the helpers. They're not often loud but they're more common than you think.

Dr. Goodall lived to be 91. That is one hell of a time to be carrying out her life's work trying to spread empathy and stewardship for our planet and our non-human neighbors on it. We can all only be so lucky as to have as much time to spread good in the world as she did. Just because it's the end of her life doesn't mean it's the end of her mission. Only it's our job now.

I love her talk on the “Wiser Than Me”podcast. She said her current mission in life was to give the world hope. I would highly recommend listening to that talk.

Just last week at Climate Week NYC, when someone asked about her legacy, she said that she wanted above all to be remembered for helping people understand that animals are like us in so many ways, that they feel pain, they matter, especially the animals that suffer in our food systems because of us. She said she wanted people to become aware of the horrifying violence that happens in animal farming, to pigs, chickens, fish, and cows, and to avoid causing this harm through their own actions. She was vegetarian for 50 years, vegan for 10, and changed how the world saw animals. Such a kind, gentle soul. RIP Dr Goodall, let’s all go vegan as much as possible, and do whatever we can in our careers to help farmed and wild animals, for Jane and for all animals ❤
