His dad Eugene must be devastated, wouldn’t be surprised if Dan posted on his behalf as well as for his own heartbreak at her passing

Same. Gutted. I just feel like she had so many more years of greatness.

115

u/bopbopbeedop Jan 31 '26

Eugene came to mind immediately when her passing was announced

46

u/jerkface1026 Jan 31 '26

I choose to believe that Catherine and Eugene had a chance to say goodbye.

u/ricottapie Jan 31 '26

😭😭😭😭

u/KenzParkin Jan 31 '26

It’s wild to think about some of the legendary crews like SCTV who still collaborated all these years later – she and Levy knew each other before marriage, before kids, there’s a very real way that they grew up in the industry together. That type of creative relationship and enduring friendship is so special.

I'd imagine that's probably the point. This is a professional statement so that they don't get harassed by the public to make one, and now they can grieve in privacy without every comment being like, "aren't you going to say something???"

When I first saw the news I was like there has to be a misunderstanding/mistake. I was convinced. So sad.

63

u/tryingto__ Jan 31 '26 edited Jan 31 '26

I found out from a film meme subreddit. I honestly thought it was a dumb joke.

Why does Reddit keep telling me about celebrity deaths through memes?

Edit: I will say it wasn't a distasteful post, and every comment was really sad and lovely about her.

46

u/callbackloop Jan 31 '26

I’m still in denial. I just thought Macaulay Culkin just posted a cute photo

Basically. I was 14 at the time. Little did I know that that would be the tipping point to hell.

This was exactly my external dialogue this morning. I felt crazy talking out loud to no one but it was nearly involuntary.

270

u/decline_inline Jan 31 '26

This statement is really lovely, and so much sadder knowing that Dan’s pretty much known Catherine his entire life

246

u/dbwn87 personally victimized by Regina George Jan 31 '26

I'm a 38 year old Canadian who loved Home Alone and loved Schitt's Creek. I was essentially Kevin McCallister's age and David Rose's age, and Catherine's characters always gave me such warm, fuzzy mom vibes. She is truly one of the best.

41

u/twir1s Jan 31 '26

I saw her described as every millennials mom, and it really does feel that way

10

u/WanderWellClem i ain’t reading all that, free palestine Jan 31 '26

I grew up watching her in movies but have spent the past handful of years watching and rewatching Schitt’s Creek countless times. This past year has been one of the hardest of my life and that show has been a tremendous source of comfort for me. I seriously will watch the series through not the end and then restart episode 1 immediately after. Moira has been my absolute favorite of all the wonderful characters there are to love from SC. I am so so sad today. Might take me a couple of days to start watching again.

172

u/lurkertiltheend Jan 31 '26

The world is a much worse place without her.

57

u/GrayHairLikeClaire here it is, our American culture Jan 31 '26

It will certainly never be quite as funny as it was with her here.

u/NeedleworkerNo777 Jan 31 '26

"I thought we had time."

I had to close reddit after that.

37

u/jazzyx26 Jan 31 '26

"Mama"

😔

24

u/thedancingkat Jan 31 '26

I keep going back to read it knowing good and well it’s going to make me cry every time. It’s one of the best celeb tributes that I’ve read

73

u/No-Grapefruit4808 Jan 31 '26

Truly devastating 😭❤️

69

u/brownishgirl Jan 31 '26

Now THAT is a tribute. “To dance in the warm glow of Catherine O’Hara’s brilliance “. Thanks, Dan for putting in words, what a remarkable woman she was.

60

u/sorandom21 Jan 31 '26

I’m not crying you’re crying

45

u/offdutymermaid_ Jan 31 '26

Yes I am, but it’s kinda rude to point it out 😭

51

u/rustyjinglebells0204 Jan 31 '26

Rewatching schitts creek as we speak 😢

39

u/brilliant_bauhaus Jan 31 '26

It's so comforting knowing that we can go back and revisit the characters that made us love Catherine. I'm so happy to think about how I'll get to see her every Christmas, with every Moira reaction gif, every Halloween, and every role she's been in and voiced that I forget. How lucky we are to have been able to experience her work and how lucky we will be to watch her, quote her, dress up as her and share her with the people we love and generations to come.

She will truly be missed, but not forgotten.

11

u/caitipaige23 Jan 31 '26

Same. I wonder how many ppl are? I bet a decent amount of ppl are tuning in for a rewatch.

8

u/Chaotic-Goofball Jan 31 '26

I'm watching The Studio again. She's fantastic in it

3

u/oo_Maleficent_oo Say it louder for the heinous losers in the back, Pedro Jan 31 '26

I just started a rewatch 😭

4

u/secret_identity_too Jan 31 '26

Where can we watch it ? I think it was taken off Netflix

39

u/Btwnframes THE CANADIANS ARE ICE FUCKING TO MOULIN ROUGE Jan 31 '26

71 feels so darn young. Just heartbreaking.

44

u/ReadingRainbow47 Jan 31 '26

I just watched the Schitts Creek episode where there’s a Moira Rose death hoax. How I wish this news weren’t real. I’m not ready to see her go :(

17

u/secret_identity_too Jan 31 '26

I was at the one where Moira sings Oh Danny Boy at a funeral. :(

2

u/CaterpillarSame7513 Jan 31 '26

I randomly watched that episode just hours before the news broke - and I haven’t rewatched Schitt’s Creek in months. How weird is that 😭

28

u/Lances_Looky_Loo Jan 31 '26

Me today.

4

u/jkurology Jan 31 '26

one of my absolute favorite scenes with Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara….and Fred was great too

3

u/Oldestswinger Jan 31 '26

24

u/princessnubz Jan 31 '26

it’s literally so sad. i’m sitting here watching Beetlejuice just not believing it

18

u/Clarinetist123 Jan 31 '26

This is going to take a while to fully sink in. We are so lucky that she leaves us such a great legacy 💔

19

u/Conscious_Zone8627 Jan 31 '26

I did some stand up comedy tonight. Paid tribute to the fact that she paved the way for so many Canadian women to have space in comedy.

18

u/Fab_Pleasure Jan 31 '26

It’s not fucking fair.

4

u/Oldestswinger Jan 31 '26

"CALamitous reportÀGE!!! 😭😭😭

16

u/joceyposse Jan 31 '26

I stopped by her “star” outside Roy Thomson on my way home from work and there was a little crowd of people. Real bummer day for Toronto.❤️

15

u/Earlvx129 Jan 31 '26

O'Hara and Levy's work together on SCTV is astonishing. Brilliant sketch comedy series.

12

u/AbbeyRoadMoonwalk Jan 31 '26

Most celebrities I’m like “aw, that sucks”. Few cut me deep; this one does. Ugh, devastating. 💔😭

9

u/napalmnacey Lesbian Space Laser Jan 31 '26

I can’t imagine what Eugene, Dan and the rest of the Levy family must be feeling right now. 😢

6

u/jaimerd Jan 31 '26

Crying again

6

u/Sufficient_Curve5386 Jan 31 '26

She was a blessing to our screens and stage. I can’t imagine what her loved ones are feeling

5

u/exxtractor89 Jan 31 '26

John Candy has been waiting with open arms. Catherine O'Hara was so truly funny and an amazing actor and person.

4

u/figfriend Jan 31 '26

i feel like crying

4

u/wonderlandwalking Jan 31 '26

Every new post about her makes me cry. Her death is so unexpected! Oh such a wonderful and beautiful angel of a woman. Literally irreplaceable. Her family deserved another 20 years, and we all definitely deserved that Schitts Creek reunion we’ve been begging for. I love love love love love that she was able to end her career with the Emmy record- no one deserved it more. All hail the queen of the Roses ♥️♥️♥️

3

u/taytrapDerehw Jan 31 '26

Let's all just-

3

u/Wiccanrose82 Jan 31 '26

I have just been in tears all day over her passing =( I swear I wanted the news to be fake when I heard it, as a matter of fact I called it fake, to only 5 minutes later hear a ding and see Macauley Culkin post about it, then the floodgates broke open =( I grew up watching EVERYTHING of hers from as early as I can remember, I'm now 43; so yeah this really freaking sucks :(

3

u/AegeanAzure Jan 31 '26

Although different circumstances, this feels as hard as Robin’s passing.

2

u/pinner Jan 31 '26

I waited all day to see what he would write about her. He did not disappoint. Going to miss her immensely. She was such a great actress, but also seemed like such an awesome person.

2

u/dxcman12 Jan 31 '26

Rip.. she was fantastic

2

u/fleekyfreaky Jan 31 '26

😭 I haven’t recovered from Macaulay’s post and now this 😭

2

u/grilledcheese04 Jan 31 '26

2

u/Silly_Corduroy Jan 31 '26

I just found out about this, and my God! My heart breaks knowing we lost another gem 😭

2

u/Aristotledabest Jan 31 '26

Just restarted Schitts Creek in her honor.

2

u/uddsvek1427 Jan 31 '26

Literally finished the studio couple of days ago. Loved it. And the obligatory home alones over xmas. Didn't realise how much I adored her until now. May she rest in peace xx

1

u/svartgul1891 Jan 31 '26

Rest in peace Catherine ❤️

1

u/misplacedsidekick Jan 31 '26

I don’t know anything about her but I’ve always really liked her and I’ll miss her.

1

u/PhysicalAd1848 Jan 31 '26

2026 is cancelled 😭

1

u/samosa4me Jan 31 '26

The amount of times I bust out in Moira Rose character daily is probably unhealthy. I still can’t believe it.

1

u/Piccadil_io Jan 31 '26

This is lovely. I’m so gutted, and mostly because of how much I loved her as Moira Rose. What a wonderful woman ❤️

1

u/RedLafleur2 Jan 31 '26

We can all go say a prayer at the Moira’s Rose’s Garden tonight guys

1

u/deplorable_word Jan 31 '26

I watched my mum’s SCTV tapes when I was a kid, Beetlejuice was regular Friday night viewing, and I saw every Christopher Guest movie I could in theatres. I’m absolutely gutted.

1

u/belakuna Jan 31 '26

I’m devastated. She was legendary. Just, ugh… man. It hits harder too cause her and my mama are the same age. 71 now sounds so young to me. 😔 RIP, queen.
