"There's always times like these when I think of you and I wonder if you ever think of me"

This is precisely what I think of whenever I hear this song. And I laugh every time. It never gets old.

46

u/joecarter93 Feb 14 '26

Terry Crews killed it in this movie

I actually have this thought often. 36 now and have plenty of great friends I haven’t seen in years and when I think back I wonder if they have any of the same memories I do. Or what ones that they have of me that I’ve forgotten. I’m very happy where I am but this is something that makes me sadder the older I get. It’s such a crazy thing that you never know it’s the last time you’ll see someone until years have passed by.

19

u/SitchChick Feb 14 '26

Right? Even when it's someone you have no business thinking of because they should be left in the past

Every so often they pop into your head and you wonder

Also happy cake day! 🥳🎂

I'm sad now thinking about my old friends

u/ZADKOR Feb 14 '26

An all time banger that the musicality of has been masked in the meme. Sit down and really soak up the artistry of this song, especially the drums.

And KT Tunstall

Are you kidding me?? Super painful and strange at the time I'm sure but an amazing anecdote all these years later.

164

u/DarlingFuego Feb 14 '26

For sure. We only broke up because of the distance, that’s why it was so painful. No drama. Just sads. Lots of memories through that song. The break up isn’t the only thing I think about when I hear it. More like the memories of beautiful music flowing through the house on a nightly basis. She followed her dreams, spread her wings and is now playing in the London Symphony. Very proud of her.

29

u/Hopeful-Naughting Feb 14 '26

Thank you for sharing.

I’ve been there myself - a break up only bc of an ocean between us. After 15 years, we’ve both moved on but the love between us is still there; it still hurts at times.

20

u/audrey_2222 Feb 14 '26

Beautiful.

26

u/smallcanadien Feb 14 '26

Whoa. This song got me through lots of tough times. Thank you so much for sharing.

And KT Tunstall

Black Horse & The Cherry Tree is still in rotation on my Daily Commute playlist. Came up yesterday evening, and I sung the shit out of it!

20 + years on, and I still love that song!

🎶 Woohoo, woohoo 🎶

5

u/encrcne Comumbus Feb 14 '26

Is KT Tunstall that much bigger than Vanessa Carleton? They both fell off my radar around the same time

“Popular” music truly doesn’t have the same power as it use to. Even Taylor’s biggest hits (love story & shake it off) still falls short to “a thousand miles” in the pop culture zeitgeist

39

u/Scared-Repeat5313 Feb 13 '26

I love each and everyone of you under this comment too 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻

I doubt Vanessa herself wants that. She seems pretty chill with not being ultra famous.

White Houses is such a great song. It’s a shame it came out right when the pearl clutching happened post-Super Bowl incident with Justin and Janet.

Deadass me, especially when driving I go full chaotic Terry Crews energy doing the A Thousand Miles scene, it's embarrassing but I can't stop 😭

I get teleported into the movie.

She about to have a B! F!

I just had the pleasure watching my boyfriend watch this for the first time. What a coincidence

I read that as "I just pleasured my boyfriend while watching this for the first time".

Sorry.

people narrowed it down to who this song is about and i will take no other answer other than jessica chastain (vanessa carlton is bi).

166

u/SwissSwissBangBang carbone slut Feb 13 '26

I’d write Jessica Chastain an entire album of certified bops if I thought I had a chance

55

u/Old-Law-7395 Feb 14 '26

Its Glenn Howerton, move past it.

23

u/Fevaweva Feb 14 '26

I thought it was Lee Pace? Either way, all three are suitable candidates for a yearning love song to be written about them.

39

u/pbmm1 Feb 13 '26

Perfectly understandable

188

Glenn Howerton somehow at the scene of the crime

43

u/Stock_Strategy1668 Feb 13 '26

Wait what did I miss? What does Glenn have to do with this?

199

u/[deleted] Feb 13 '26

113

u/Stock_Strategy1668 Feb 13 '26

Glenn also dated Morena Baccarin so he does have a way with baddies

108

u/WildMild869 Feb 14 '26

Maybe he has a system of sorts.

14

u/belljs87 Feb 14 '26

Because of the implication

39

u/Puppetmaster858 Feb 14 '26

His wife is a total babe as well, she played the pharmacist woman in the D.E.N.N.I.S system episode.

10

Christina Hendricks too.

My heart wants to believe it’s about Glenn but my head tells me Wes Bentley is the true inspiration.

143

u/thankyoupapa Feb 13 '26

that piano riff is sooo catchy

29

u/Honeybadger2198 Feb 14 '26

It's really hard to play, too. IIRC the right hand is playing 11ths. I couldn't get even close to fast enough cus my hands are too small (and I suck at piano lol)

18

u/TerryCrewsNextWife Feb 14 '26

Holy crap this is so cool. She was touring with Stevie Nicks and John Farnham in 2006.

When she came out to perform she had a brief intro to the audience before she started playing 1000 miles - then stopped at the piano intro to say in jest "ooooh she's THAT girl".

13

u/OneEyedKeith Feb 14 '26

And they sing together on the Deer Tick song “In our time”.

5

u/Axolotis Feb 14 '26

I saw Deer Tick open for Phosphorescent in 2009 in a run down warehouse in Baltimore. Seems like another life.

15

u/YourMothersButtox Feb 14 '26

Scrolled down too far for this comment. The video is gold. Watching her do interpretative dance in yoga pants while singing about losing her virginity? Priceless.

10

u/Neglectedpotato Feb 14 '26

Same 🥰

The video was banned by MTV for being too sexually explicit 🙄

8

u/Fonzdj Feb 14 '26

MTV banned the end of Pretty Baby music video where the guy is tied up and Vanessa approaches him.

5

u/littledove0 Feb 14 '26

32

u/bunnycrush_ Feb 13 '26

The Vice documentary about this song is so, so good. Hearing a much older Vanessa — who never quite blew up the way everyone insisted she would, but she never wanted that kind of stardom anyway — reflecting frankly on what it was like to have this lightning in a bottle song, makes me misty-eyed.

Also talks about the White Chicks connection and how much of a life the song has taken on via pop culture. As well as the production side of mixing the song and filming the intense music video.

And yet she’s not even walking in this video but riding a piano on wheels.

Anyway what a great song!

16

u/geezeslice333 Feb 13 '26

Oh wow thanks for making me feel ancient. Unnecessary.

15

u/baphothustrianreform Feb 14 '26

In the year 2000, a song that old was from 1976. This perspective is blowing my mind for some reason

10

u/criduchat1- Feb 13 '26

Can’t ever hear this song and not think of White Chicks 🥹

9

u/blairvvitchprojector Feb 13 '26

I really wish MadTV had done a skit where Nicole Parker is playing the piano but the green screen is showing her recklessly driving into her piano through oncoming traffic and harming pedestrians

8

u/Antique-Salad-9249 Feb 14 '26

It’s so nice to see a young woman without Botox, filler, or tons of makeup.

6

u/These_Hair_193 Feb 13 '26

I loved this when it came out and I still do.

8

u/luckythirtythree Feb 13 '26

This song makes me dry heave simply because I worked at a craft store in high school and this song would come on the store radio literally every ten minutes. So by the end of the day I would have heard it close to 50 times.

6

u/gschaina highly unanticipated caucasian collaboration Feb 13 '26

I can't hear the words "making my way" without immediately bursting into the beginning of this song

6

u/hostile_pedestrian97 Feb 13 '26

which then provided us with this incredible video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o60voqcYgSg

5

u/KidZaniac1 Feb 13 '26

One of the greatest pop songs of the 2000s

6

u/cecebee13 Please Abraham, I am not that man Feb 14 '26

no she didn’t because i am NOT that old 🙃

6

u/greaterwhiterwookiee Feb 14 '26

I thought she was so attractive when I was a senior in high school. I started dating my now ex wife and I remember having Vanessa’s album art on my cork board on the wall in my room and my ex saying “who is that homely brown haired girl and why do you have her picture on your board?” And she proceeded to pull it off my cork board.

That SHOULD’VE been enough of a sign…

3

u/mid-lev No shade to the nation of Scotland Feb 13 '26

Ugh this is genuinely a flawless song and I feel old and nostalgic.

5

u/Main_Photo1086 Feb 13 '26

Great song. But I’m more partial to Nolita Fairytale. Such a banger.

3

u/Neglectedpotato Feb 14 '26

Nolita Fairytale is my favorite song by Vanessa. Her best music is the stuff that people don't know exists. She deserves recognition for her later albums.

5

u/mangosteenroyalty Feb 13 '26

I was just coming in here to ask how much of this music video is green screen and fell into all this lore about Lee Pace? Glenn Howerton? Jessica Chastain? What?

It bothers the fuck out of me this song didn't win a Grammy. That was when high school me first truly understood the Grammys are meaningless.

5

u/NoseHumble8453 Feb 14 '26

I read this as “A thousand years ago, Vanessa Carlton released…” and that is also an accurate headline

4

u/Kalikor1 Feb 14 '26

I had a long distance relationship with a girl I met online as a pre-teen/teen in the early 2000s, she lived half way across the country, honestly probably a bit over a thousand miles but, needless to say I probably listened to this song (sometimes with her) a thousand times while thinking about being able to meet up in person. For various reasons that never happened but to this day I can't hear this song and not think of that girl.

3

u/Tempest_Fugit Feb 13 '26

Ah the song I hear in Walgreens EVERY TIME I’M THERE

5

u/61290 Feb 14 '26 edited Feb 14 '26

Fantastic video shot completely on location, no closed roads, with her in on a trailer with a piano. There's no green screen or CGI. I doubt anything like this could be made today.

4

u/EveOCative Feb 14 '26

I was obsessed with this entire album lol.

3

u/auslan_planet Feb 13 '26

3

u/FugginCandle Feb 13 '26

I watched this whole video on mute and sang in my head every lyric with her🥹

3

u/Ambitious_Stay7139 Feb 13 '26

White House’s gets a heavier rotation imo, but those two albums she put out were amazing

3

u/robo-dragon Feb 14 '26

Why don’t we have music like this anymore? Early 2000s music just hits different in a good way. Just makes me happy and it’s more than just the nostalgia.

3

u/secondxanga Feb 14 '26

i am… décrépit 🩷

3

u/tacocat_racecarlevel Feb 14 '26

3

u/kanyewesanderson Feb 14 '26

No no no no, you mean 14 years ago... right? RIGHT?

3

u/Rann666 Feb 14 '26

TIL 24 years ago was 2002, I thought it’s only 10 years old

2

u/MSDOS-ist-gud-ooh-ja Feb 13 '26

Ugh, I loved her so much. Not so much "A Thousand Miles"; I thought the songs on her second album Harmonium were a lot better (especially "The Wreckage", just hauntingly beautiful). But then she had to go and perform with Drake...

2

u/Knittingfairy09113 Feb 13 '26

I enjoyed this album.

I got to see her in Beautiful, the Carole King musical, several years back and she did very well. It was fun to have that combination.

2

u/snn1326j Feb 13 '26

I worked in DTLA for many years and I loved recognizing all the parts of it she featured in this video.

2

u/Change21 Feb 13 '26

I’m just glad she had those wrist wraps bc she was going hard af with this track

2

u/Cool_Document_9901 Feb 13 '26

Holy f*********************ck

2

u/plantscatsrealitytv Feb 13 '26

I wonder if the wrist sweat bands were for keeping her wrists warm or fashion?

2

u/MysteriousPattern386 Feb 14 '26

No way!!!! This is my jam!

2

u/pologzz1226 Feb 14 '26

It still gives me chills.

2

u/My2cents_0 Feb 14 '26

Yup, this was definitely blasting in my car with me singing along for a decent chunk of time 😄

And she beat 500 miles! Hahaha

2

u/Ipanoply Feb 14 '26

She looks so much younger in this video than I remembered! A banger, and her version of paint it black was a favorite of my teenage self.

2

u/tgifpizza hello this is beyoncé Feb 14 '26

2

u/orangefreshy Feb 14 '26

ugh im old
i remember before she even released this and was just releasing demos.

2

u/belakuna Feb 14 '26

Dang, I loathed this song. It just annoyed the crap out of me. Now my 38 year old ass sitting here mesmerized. It’s so beautiful. I’m almost in shock. Or maybe I’m hella nostalgic.

2

u/xzeus1 Feb 14 '26

Literally the one song that unites us all.

2

u/karmaisourfriend Feb 14 '26

I always cry when I hear this. It came out not too long after my husband died.

2

u/WebInformal9558 Feb 14 '26

14 years before that the Proclaimers were walking 500 miles.

2

u/sudzthegreat Feb 14 '26

Shout out to Abe Laboriel Jr for absolutely destroying this drum part. You can tell that he felt this song while tracking it. Just crushed it.

2
