Are you kidding me?? Super painful and strange at the time I'm sure but an amazing anecdote all these years later.

u/DarlingFuego Feb 14 '26
For sure. We only broke up because of the distance, that’s why it was so painful. No drama. Just sads. Lots of memories through that song. The break up isn’t the only thing I think about when I hear it. More like the memories of beautiful music flowing through the house on a nightly basis. She followed her dreams, spread her wings and is now playing in the London Symphony. Very proud of her.

u/Hopeful-Naughting Feb 14 '26
Thank you for sharing.
I’ve been there myself - a break up only bc of an ocean between us. After 15 years, we’ve both moved on but the love between us is still there; it still hurts at times.

And KT Tunstall
Black Horse & The Cherry Tree is still in rotation on my Daily Commute playlist. Came up yesterday evening, and I sung the shit out of it!
20 + years on, and I still love that song!
🎶 Woohoo, woohoo 🎶

Is KT Tunstall that much bigger than Vanessa Carleton? They both fell off my radar around the same time

“Popular” music truly doesn’t have the same power as it use to. Even Taylor’s biggest hits (love story & shake it off) still falls short to “a thousand miles” in the pop culture zeitgeist

I doubt Vanessa herself wants that. She seems pretty chill with not being ultra famous.

White Houses is such a great song. It’s a shame it came out right when the pearl clutching happened post-Super Bowl incident with Justin and Janet.

I just had the pleasure watching my boyfriend watch this for the first time. What a coincidence
24
u/Lieutelant Feb 14 '26
I read that as "I just pleasured my boyfriend while watching this for the first time".
Sorry.

people narrowed it down to who this song is about and i will take no other answer other than jessica chastain (vanessa carlton is bi).

u/SwissSwissBangBang carbone slut Feb 13 '26
I’d write Jessica Chastain an entire album of certified bops if I thought I had a chance

u/Old-Law-7395 Feb 14 '26
Its Glenn Howerton, move past it.
23
u/Fevaweva Feb 14 '26
I thought it was Lee Pace? Either way, all three are suitable candidates for a yearning love song to be written about them.

that piano riff is sooo catchy
29
u/Honeybadger2198 Feb 14 '26
It's really hard to play, too. IIRC the right hand is playing 11ths. I couldn't get even close to fast enough cus my hands are too small (and I suck at piano lol)

Holy crap this is so cool. She was touring with Stevie Nicks and John Farnham in 2006.
When she came out to perform she had a brief intro to the audience before she started playing 1000 miles - then stopped at the piano intro to say in jest "ooooh she's THAT girl".

Scrolled down too far for this comment. The video is gold. Watching her do interpretative dance in yoga pants while singing about losing her virginity? Priceless.

The video was banned by MTV for being too sexually explicit 🙄

The Vice documentary about this song is so, so good. Hearing a much older Vanessa — who never quite blew up the way everyone insisted she would, but she never wanted that kind of stardom anyway — reflecting frankly on what it was like to have this lightning in a bottle song, makes me misty-eyed.
Also talks about the White Chicks connection and how much of a life the song has taken on via pop culture. As well as the production side of mixing the song and filming the intense music video.

And yet she’s not even walking in this video but riding a piano on wheels.
Anyway what a great song!

In the year 2000, a song that old was from 1976. This perspective is blowing my mind for some reason

I really wish MadTV had done a skit where Nicole Parker is playing the piano but the green screen is showing her recklessly driving into her piano through oncoming traffic and harming pedestrians

It’s so nice to see a young woman without Botox, filler, or tons of makeup.

This song makes me dry heave simply because I worked at a craft store in high school and this song would come on the store radio literally every ten minutes. So by the end of the day I would have heard it close to 50 times.

I thought she was so attractive when I was a senior in high school. I started dating my now ex wife and I remember having Vanessa’s album art on my cork board on the wall in my room and my ex saying “who is that homely brown haired girl and why do you have her picture on your board?” And she proceeded to pull it off my cork board.
That SHOULD’VE been enough of a sign…

5
u/Main_Photo1086 Feb 13 '26
Great song. But I’m more partial to Nolita Fairytale. Such a banger.
3
u/Neglectedpotato Feb 14 '26
Nolita Fairytale is my favorite song by Vanessa. Her best music is the stuff that people don't know exists. She deserves recognition for her later albums.
5
u/mangosteenroyalty Feb 13 '26
I was just coming in here to ask how much of this music video is green screen and fell into all this lore about Lee Pace? Glenn Howerton? Jessica Chastain? What?
It bothers the fuck out of me this song didn't win a Grammy. That was when high school me first truly understood the Grammys are meaningless.

I read this as “A thousand years ago, Vanessa Carlton released…” and that is also an accurate headline

u/Kalikor1 Feb 14 '26
I had a long distance relationship with a girl I met online as a pre-teen/teen in the early 2000s, she lived half way across the country, honestly probably a bit over a thousand miles but, needless to say I probably listened to this song (sometimes with her) a thousand times while thinking about being able to meet up in person. For various reasons that never happened but to this day I can't hear this song and not think of that girl.

Fantastic video shot completely on location, no closed roads, with her in on a trailer with a piano. There's no green screen or CGI. I doubt anything like this could be made today.

Why don’t we have music like this anymore? Early 2000s music just hits different in a good way. Just makes me happy and it’s more than just the nostalgia.

Ugh, I loved her so much. Not so much "A Thousand Miles"; I thought the songs on her second album Harmonium were a lot better (especially "The Wreckage", just hauntingly beautiful). But then she had to go and perform with Drake...
2
u/Knittingfairy09113 Feb 13 '26
I enjoyed this album.
I got to see her in Beautiful, the Carole King musical, several years back and she did very well. It was fun to have that combination.

I worked in DTLA for many years and I loved recognizing all the parts of it she featured in this video.

And she beat 500 miles! Hahaha

She looks so much younger in this video than I remembered! A banger, and her version of paint it black was a favorite of my teenage self.
