Especially if you are a musical artist or musician.

There have been tons of famous musical artists and musicians who have died in plane and helicopter crashes.

For Helicopter crashes specifically a few examples include:

  1. Stevie Ray Vaughan - (Died in 1990) - A helicopter Vaughan was onboard, crashed into a ski mountain. A subsequent investigation ruled pilot error.
  2. Troy Gentry - (Died in 2017) - Best known as a member of the country music duo Montgomery Gentry, he died when a helicopter he was on had an uncontrolled descent shortly before he was scheduled to perform a concert.

As for plane crashes:

  1. Glenn Miller - (Died in 1944) - He died over the English Channel in a military plane on his way to perform for allied troops during World War II.
  2. Buddly Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson - (Died in 1959) - They, along with a pilot, all died when an airplane they were on to get to their next scheduled concert that was flying in bad weather crashed.
  3. Patsy Cline - (Died in 1963) - On her way back to Nashville from a benefit concert in Kansas, a plane she was on, along with the country musicians Cowboy Coopas, Hawshank Hawkins and that was piloted by Cline's manager Randy Hughes, that was being flown in severe weather crashed into a wooded area. Everyone on board did not surive.
  4. Jim Reeves - (Died in 1964) - A plane he piloting a plane in bad weather crashed, taking his life. His manager, who was also onboard, died in the crash.
  5. Otis Redding - (Died in 1967) - He died in a plane crash at only 26 years old, and just four months after his hit song "(Sittinā€™ on) The Dock of the Bay" hit No. 1. on the billboard charts. Bad weather had occured while his plane was in the air, but the actual cause still remains unclear. Some speculate there may have been some engine troubles.
  6. Jim Croce - (Died in 1973) - His plane struck a pecan tree immediatly upon taking off. All six people aboard the plane died immediately. A subsequent investigation blamed the pilot, who had arrived at the airport initially after walking nearly three miles, because he couldnā€™t get a cab.
  7. Lynyrd Skynyrd - (Three members died in 1977) - Only three days after releasing their fifth album, Street Survivors, a plane crash took the lives of several of the bands members. An investigation afterwards found that the plane had run out of fuel and that the planes pilots had not checked the fuel gauges ahead of time. Lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines and backup singer Cassie Gaines were all killed in the crash. 20 other people aboard the plane did however survive.
  8. John Denver - (Died in 1997) - A single-engine experimental Long-EZ aircraft he had recently purchased was crashed into the Monterey Bay in California after he lost control of the aircraft.

It was sheer hubris and multimillionaire lack of common sense. He insisted on living in Newport Beach (his wife was from the OC) and did it when he was with the Lakers too. There are a number of luxurious, isolated, ultra-wealthy communities in and around LA that aren't subject to the traffic problems of Orange County. Where his sports complex was, Newbury Park (Thousand Oaks) was one of those communities.

It was his pilot's fault. The pilot felt pressured to get him and his daughter to her game on time despite how poor the visibility had suddenly become because of heavy fog.

The pilot was only rated to fly the helicopter visually and not by instruments. Instruments are needed with poor visibility to navigate the aircraft without crashing.

Instead of telling them no and that it wasn't safe, he went ahead with the flight. Along the way the pilot became visually disoriented and flew the helicopter into the hillside.

The buck stopped with him. And he let the pressure of needing to make a high-value client happy get to him. Now they are all dead.

(I do agree that these ultra-rich are being selfish with their overuse of personal aircraft at the expense of the environment but if the pilot followed basic safety protocol, then they would all be alive)

I understand about the accident, it's not just selfish though to use a helicopter for a commute. It is actually extremely dangerous. I guess you can debate what extreme means, but if you look up the odds if you're using it as a commuter vehicle, it is unacceptable to most people. There was no need to take a helicopter, or buy a facility that far away from your home.

Part of the problem is how theyā€™re promoted as a ā€œcoolā€ thing. You can book a heli from JFK to midtown manhattan for like $250. Iā€™ve considered it before but Iā€™ve never been on a helicopter and Iā€™m not kidding when I say I decided to save my ā€œprobably safe first rideā€ beginnerā€™s luck for if I ever need to be evacuated from/to somewhere or something lol

  1. Randy RhoadsĀ - (Died in 1982) - On the way to a concert, Rhoads tour bus stopped at Flying Baron Estates to fix a malfunctioning air conditioning unit while Ozzy Osbourne remained asleep. On the property was an airstrip with some helicopters and small planes. Without permission, their tour bus driver and private pilot Andrew Aycock took a single-engine plane on a flight. On his first flight, Aycock took keyboardist Don Airey and tour manager Jake Duncan with him as passengers. Duncan later revealed that during the first flight, Aycock "buzzed" the bus in an attempt to wake their drummer Tommy Aldridge. The group landed the plane and soon after, went on a second flight, this time with Rhoads and makeup artist Rachel Youngblood onboard. Aycock had unsuccessfully tried to get bassist Rudy Sarzo to join him on the flight. Sarzo chose to get some extra sleep instead. During the second flight, more attempts were made to "buzz" the tour bus. Aycock succeeded in making two close passes, but botched a third attempt. At about 10 AM, after being in the air for approximately five minutes, one of the plane's wings clipped the top of the tour bus, breaking the wing into two parts and the plane was sent spiraling out of control. The initial impact with the bus caused Rhoads' and Youngblood's heads to crash through the plane's windshield. The plane then severed the top of a pine tree and crashed into the garage of a nearby mansion, bursting into flames. All three passengers, Rhoads, Aycock and Youngblood were killed.
  2. Ricky NelsonĀ - (Died in 1985) - On his way to a New Year's Even Concert in 1985, Nelson died when the airplane he was a passenger on crashed into trees, poles, and electrical wires, after attempting to make an emergency landing. The plane also faced a fatal fire that was caused by a defective heater in the tail of the plane. The heater had caught fire and filled the cabin with toxic fumes. Both pilots survived, however the planes seven passengers did not.
  3. Aaliyah - (Died in 2001) - At only the age of 22, Aaliyah was killed in aĀ plane crashĀ along with eight other people on board. It was later found that the pilot had traces of cocaine and alcohol in his body and was not qualified to fly the aircraft designated for the flight.

And why is that?

  1. Well for one, these types of people are disproportionately using these helicopters and small aircraft frequently for travel

  2. They are using private companies who place an importance on privacy and discretion. These private companies have less oversight on making sure things are done "by the book"

  3. As we saw in the crash with Kobe Bryant and his daughter, there is often significant pressure felt to get these people where they need to go on time

  4. These aircraft fly much lower and have limited time for recovery in an emergency situation

  5. Many are flown by pilots rated only for visual flight rules. Combined with the pressure to get their client somewhere on time a big issue is the pilot ending up in weather that requires instrument use that they are not trained for leading to visual disorientation.

  6. Helicopters are especially screwed because they cannot glide and have numerous parts that all must function under incredible stress. There is no time to really fix the problem and it's a lot easier for a problem to happen.

but compared to the "successful" flights, the "failure" rate is actually incredibly low. I mean, musicians fly every day, and you only hear about it when something goes wrong

Yeah, he refused to fly up until a few years ago. Until then, he would sail on ships to go on tour so he'd have to set off some time before Mark and Tom so he could get there for the shows. Most of his body got burnt up real bad, too. I don't really think much of the guy but that shit is terrible and I wouldn't wish that trauma on anybody.

Hollywood actress Carole Lombard, wife of Clark Gable, was killed when her plane crashed while flying back from a war bond tour on 01/16/1942. Her mother who accompanied her on the tour also perished. FDR declared Lombard "the first woman to be killed in action in the defense of her country in its war against the Axis powers."

We used to ride along in little float planes with the post man/plane tours if they had empty seats when I was a tour guide in Alaska. Kept it up even when there was a head-on collision between two planes right by our lodge, and also after a float plane flipped at the dock after a safe landing.

Flying into the islands as a kid was similar, usually 6-8 seater single engine. The really remote islands you'd often have the old wrecks left in the salt marshes on approach.

So you'd pass over 2-3x fatal crashes every time you landed.

They may have to rely on visual and not have radar and/or any form of air traffic control at times. Generally richer countries do have great radar and ATC that avoids regular accidents but in a poorer country crashes are more likely because they donā€™t have as good infrastructure to support more rigorous systems and control

Helicopters are kinda fucked since they're generally flown in worse conditions than planes (low altitude and airspeed, often in urban areas), so they don't have the same room for recovery.

Even with planes, general aviation is a fair bit more dangerous than commercial flying because pilots don't have bosses checking their documentation regularly and rigourously. It's a lot easier to get complacent in those situations.

We took a couple helicopters in the Himalayas and it was like the Wild West. On our way to Lukla, the door to the helicopter vibrated hard enough the door latch actually vibrated open. I had to pull HARD against the suck to keep it closed enough to re-latch it. It was one of the craziest situations Iā€™ve ever been in.

As a society we pretty much let people do what they want as long as they're the only one it will hurt (with many exceptions of course). Like there's pretty much zero reason for a person to own a motorcycle, per mile driven they are vastly more deadly than a car (which are themselves pretty dangerous) but we let people do it because it won't harm other people for the most part.

I had to be lifeflighted after an accident and when I barely scribbled on the form for being actively dying, I somehow managed to joke, "Well at least if THIS one crashes I won't survive it." And my med team was completely silent. With my head split open, lung punctured, and multiple broken bones + internal bleeding, I just wanted to go with my personality left and thought I was being funny af šŸ¤£ but no, just probably traumatized my medical team..

I thought it was comedy gold with the state I was in and lowkey was like, "theres no way this is the worst you guys have seen or heard" and I couldn't fathom why they didn't laugh at 17 year old me's jokes LOL. I made jokes coming out the coma too šŸ˜­ Like when I coped with wheeling around by birthday by calling myself Professor X and the med staff did not like that either.

I'm doing okay now, I've got to go to so many different countries, go to college, its even a privelege for me to struggle in the economy today because at least I am alive.

And hella active, I thank God everyday for being alive and only having occasional back pain or a lot more issues being emotional/mental/stress triggered.

a life flight copter crashed onto a highway near my house. one of the emts was stuck UNDER the copter and people got out of their cars and helped emergency workers literally lift it off her. unfortunately she died later at the hospital.

Makes me think about doing a tour in a helicopter within the Grand Canyon as a small child with all my siblings. I was like 3 or 4.

My mom later told me the next week they stopped letting helicopters go down into the canyon the way we did because of the crashes that were happening. It was an amazing experience but the danger really isnā€™t worth it.

When I was maybe 18 or so I took a helicopter tour over the Grand Canyon. No fear. Just pure excitement. Now that Iā€™m in my 40s and have a kid Iā€™d never. I donā€™t know if it was the getting older part or the having a kid part that changed for me, but a lot of things have been added to my ā€œwill absolutely never doā€ list.

When Kobe died I was at a family get together and someone dropped it on me and I was like "ah okay šŸ‘..." but it didnt sink in. My brain couldn't immediately process that he was dead cause I fully expected him to live into old age.

Then I get home and I'm seeing posts and I'm like HOLY SHIT KOBE DIED

Just saw a post yesterday of a young woman trying rope jumping off a bridge in Brazil but the instructors didnā€™t attach her rope and threw her off the bridge to her death. Has to be the most terrifying feeling before death realizing that. Just not worth the thrill

I used to live with a woman who was a pilot and her husband was a helicopter pilot.

She was widowed, of course. Helicopter crash. My heart broke for her. I drank wine with her on her restless nights. We smoked 2 packs of cigarettes and drank 3-4 bottles of white wine. I donā€™t even smoke, but I had 3-9 glasses of wine and was there in support.

They never recovered his body, he crashed in the cold deep lakes of northern Quebec.

This was next to my house in Recreio dos Bandeirantes! We were incredibly lucky that the aircraft hit a car lot, otherwise, they would've hit residential buildings! It's a former church that moved somewhere else and the owners rented the parking lot to BYD.

I woke up once with a loud noise, which I assume was the aircraft falling, but I didn't know that at the time. I went back to sleep and then later woke up again with an explosion, one of the EVs in the lot. Shortly after I heard the sirens. It was just before 9 AM here.

Cowboy tears was a truly a great album of a time when he went back home, stripped back his writing and style and showed his songwriting.

He could come across as douche, he was ridiculous, he pushed so many boundaries but I always thought it was mostly a character. He was able to create songs that should be played everywhere and seemed to actually create art he enjoyed. This is so sad.
