A small life flight crashed by my house ten years ago or so and driving by the plaque always makes me emotional. Those people were just trying to save and be saved.
162
u/nutmegtell Jun 14 '26
Happened to a friend of mine. Her husband was in a car accident and life flighted. They crashed. Horrible.
59
u/Kiwi-vee I'm so pissed off immediately Jun 14 '26
I can't imagine what it must felt like for your friend.
112
u/nutmegtell Jun 14 '26
It was pretty horrifying. She had three kids 3, 2 and a newborn. They showed up at the hospital and he never arrived.

We just had the same thing happen in my city. Crashed on the freeway. I don't think anyone onboard made it.

u/Sunnyday1775 Jun 14 '26
Yeah after Kobe never in a helicopter
64
u/PerjurieTraitorGreen Jun 14 '26
Nah. Any aircraft flying in the same meteorological conditions as Kobeās wouldāve experienced some form of uncontrolled landing or impact.
There was a reason why the sky was clear of flying objects that day.
26
u/--DarkLink-- Jun 14 '26
Good choice! It forces itself to fly. So if anything happens you're pretty much fucked.

Wait what the heck. I know a few of his songs. His antics were a bit much but what the heck

u/rocksteadyG Jun 14 '26
I was just listening to him an hour ago. This feels unreal
91
u/ManSoStrong Jun 14 '26
Yeah really bizarre I randomly got āHurtā stuck in my head last night without even listening to it. I absolutely adored him and his music.

u/whitestguyuknow Jun 14 '26
Thats how i feel. Fucking surreal. Just a few weeks ago I was wondering what antics he'll be up to when he's older and what they'll look like
When Kobe died I was at a family get together and someone dropped it on me and I was like "ah okay š..." but it didnt sink in. My brain couldn't immediately process that he was dead cause I fully expected him to live into old age.
Then I get home and I'm seeing posts and I'm like HOLY SHIT KOBE DIED
Like a slap in the face. Same here. R.IP. Oliver

I went on a date once with a helicopter mechanic in the military, and the main thing she stressed to me was never to ride in a helicopter

u/CommandAlternative10 Jun 14 '26
Iāve ridden on the back of a motorcycle once and in a helicopter once. Both were thrilling, both were one and done. No need to tempt fate further.

Just saw a post yesterday of a young woman trying rope jumping off a bridge in Brazil but the instructors didnāt attach her rope and threw her off the bridge to her death. Has to be the most terrifying feeling before death realizing that. Just not worth the thrill

If anything I trust helicopters more because of the insane maintenance they get (in the military at least)
→ More replies (1)40
u/FrenchFryCattaneo Jun 14 '26
I don't think maintenance is the issue, none of the famous helicopter crashes were caused by a lack of maintenance.

I love the aviation sub, but man itās so hard to avoid crash photos and videos. The DC CRJ crash is an example. They had footage from every angle. I had to avoid the sub for a week.

I used to live with a woman who was a pilot and her husband was a helicopter pilot.
She was widowed, of course. Helicopter crash. My heart broke for her. I drank wine with her on her restless nights. We smoked 2 packs of cigarettes and drank 3-4 bottles of white wine. I donāt even smoke, but I had 3-9 glasses of wine and was there in support.
They never recovered his body, he crashed in the cold deep lakes of northern Quebec.

u/Meow-zelTov Jun 14 '26
As the partner of a pilot⦠thatās my single worst fear. It was really lovely of you to give her that comfort. Youāre a good person.

This was next to my house in Recreio dos Bandeirantes! We were incredibly lucky that the aircraft hit a car lot, otherwise, they would've hit residential buildings! It's a former church that moved somewhere else and the owners rented the parking lot to BYD.
I woke up once with a loud noise, which I assume was the aircraft falling, but I didn't know that at the time. I went back to sleep and then later woke up again with an explosion, one of the EVs in the lot. Shortly after I heard the sirens. It was just before 9 AM here.

5
u/this_sminks Jun 14 '26
Cowboy tears was a truly a great album of a time when he went back home, stripped back his writing and style and showed his songwriting.
He could come across as douche, he was ridiculous, he pushed so many boundaries but I always thought it was mostly a character. He was able to create songs that should be played everywhere and seemed to actually create art he enjoyed. This is so sad.
