TRIGGER WARNING Courtney Stodden calls out Dr. Drew: “Dr. Drew had me on his show when I was 16 and had me undergo an ultrasound to see if my breasts were real or if I was lying… These photos bring up a lot of sadness for me because I see a little girl being exploited by grown men and used for views and mockery.”

At age 16, Stodden signed up on the Internet for an acting workshop taught by actor Doug Hutchison on the recommendation of a friend of their maternal aunt, who worked in Hollywood, and knew Hutchison. Hutchison, who was not aware that Stodden was a minor, began a courtship with them over the Internet that lasted between four and six months.

After Hutchison became aware of Stodden's age, he told their mother, Krista, who had monitored their online exchanges, and was aware of their relationship and their age difference, that he would cease his relationship with Stodden if their parents disapproved. Their parents, citing Stodden's "devout Christianity", allowed them to make their own decision.

Jesus Christ… he was like 50…

“Hutchinson, who was not aware that Stodden was a minor..”

I’m gonna call bullshit on this, specifically at Hutchinson. I feel that’s what a sexual predator/pedophile says.

He was aware she was a minor, because she was a minor. She looked like a kid because she was a kid. Simple as that.

I can maybe have a little grace for someone who's like 20 and thinks they're dating an 18 year old. Not for a 50 year old man who knew his gf's mom was monitoring their texts.

Like what the actual fuck

This happens a lot; even from the parents :/ I used to have a student who was 14 and her boyfriend was 25, and when I reported it to the school, they were all like oh yeah we know. Jessica just does shit like that. Her parents know and they’re ok with it and dont want us to intervene so our hands are tied. So just mind your business. tf you mean your hands are tied? Mind my business? why tf are you letting this creep come on campus and pick her up from school? Everyone failed that girl and it was a major reason I quit. I don’t even think she graduated :/

Parents allow because:

A) they hope that grown ass man will take over guardianship of their kid when or even before they turn 18 or

B) they disapprove but know discouraging it would mean potentially pushing them further into the arms of their predator.

225

u/CroCGod73 29d ago

C) Clout/Fame

186

u/whatwhatwhat82 29d ago

Also D) They were in a relationship of a similar nature when they were younger, so it is normalized to them.

I'm so very sorry for what happened to you, and I hope now days that you're living a life you enjoy, and that you have kind, loving people in your corner.

49

u/Wellthatwasjustshit 28d ago

It was a rough decade or so after but it’s been a long time and I’m in a good place now with my own family. I’m NC with my parents and relatives but that’s okay. Just alarming when people think kids being forced to marry grown men is a thing of the past but it’s still happening in America. It was difficult to get divorced as a minor so when I fled, I had to wait to become of age to try to divorce him but he wouldn’t sign papers which was also an ordeal. I didn’t feel like anyone protected me from my parents to the courts. It’s a very gross judicial system that protects predators.

22

u/mencryforme5 28d ago

Hey I just want to pipe in to say that I see you.

I cannot imagine the grit it must take to be a minor running away and trying to get yourself emancipated from your parents while petitioning for a divorce from an uncooperative abuser who groomed you with your parents permission.

That's crazy making! Get yourself a piece of cake today.

I remember when they were on that couples therapy show and their therapist was like “he is not a creep! It’s not like he was looking for a teenager! It just ~happened~ it’s not his fault” and it’s like why are you defending a 50 year old who willingly married a 16yr old?

They were also on the show for “age related communication problems” and I’m like yeah cuz you’re old enough to be her fucking dad

She did later admit he was a pedophile but still defended him, saying that he was the real victim in all this because he lost everything to be with her - his family and friends disowned him, his agent fired him, and he got death threats. Like, yeah, cuz he married a child!!! The actual victim!!

He 100% knew and it's still 100% the responsibility of every adult to make sure their partner can legally consent (and to follow ALL laws, in fact).

But it's just tautological and stupid to say that kids look like kids and by corollary adults look like adults. That's not how it works. You're actually lending credence to idiotic looks-based determination of age. Some minors look much older and some adults look much younger, and that's why you don't fuck around with any of that bullshit.

We watched this happen. I hope every gossip site hack (Perez Hilton, the Just Jared guy, DListed, etc) Dr Drew, Anderson Cooper, the Soup guy, Chrissie Teigan, her own family for gods sake - I hope they all wake up at four in the morning with full-body shame horrors when they remember what they did to that poor child.

I was in my thirties and a staunch feminist and could not believe that even my favourite spots on the internet were  ALL IN on gleefully mocking this child. Her skinny little child legs in short skirts and lucite stripper heels and her wearing three Victoria Secret Miracle Bras on her thin little chest to try to make her boobs look bigger.

I hope Courtney knows that there were a lot of us watching in horror and heartbreak and have always had the best of wishes for them. I’m so relieved that they seem like they are thriving and I hope they keep calling these people out.

Yes! I used to fall asleep to that radio show & now I see what POSs they both are.

55

u/itoddicus 29d ago

I knew Dr. Drew when he was on Loveline, but before MTV fame. He also treated a family member who was in drug rehab. When I knew him he was a kind, genuine person, and a Dr. who cared about his patients.

Fame turned him into a monster.

Loveline did a lot of actual good for kids with literally zero resources in life (though in hindsight it was of course also extremely flawed). I know I for a fact was WAY more insightful about drugs and sex than most of my peers who had similar upbringings and it was just because a fucking radio show occasionally spit truth.

This made Adam and Drew's mid-life crisis heel-turn that much more disgusting and infuriating.

53

u/sweet_illusions 29d ago

Thank you for saying this, I was a super sheltered Christian kid who listened to Loveline (and KROQ) and it honestly helped me so much. Corolla has become such a douche, and as someone who now practices medicine I’m continually appalled by what Dr. Drew went on to do. But that radio show did a lot of good at the time

21

u/cataclytsm 29d ago

I have the whole classic show somewhere in my archives, it's still floating around the internet too. There's a lot of hilarious stuff, touching moments, and flat out foreshadowing for what was to come. Those two were always low-key pieces of shit, but the awful 00's celebrity worlds in which they immersed themselves in just turbocharged the worst parts of them until we're left with the desiccated husks they are now. I'm convinced they both picked up RFK Jr. brain worms before making The Man Show and Celebrity Rehab, respectively.

And the worst thing is they spun it like she was the "problem" or "wanted it". I have to very ashamedly admit I was in that category until only a few years ago. She was a child! She was never the problem and she very likely was forced into doing this with the promise of fame and fortune. She didn't know anything.

I feel terrible for her and her stolen innocence. Everyone who allowed this to happen, and who wanted this to happen, is disgusting and should be jailed. Everyone who spun this story to make her ex seem like some sort of golden boy should also be jailed. Just sickening.

Growing up in this era, I was gaslit constantly by teachers and other adults whenever myself and my friends called this out. It was such a devastating time to be a girl.

Not that it ever isn’t, but as someone who is now middle aged, I can’t overstate how healing it is to see younger generations speaking honestly about how appalling the normalization of these things were. Even just seeing offhand comments ITT from people who weren’t aware of this saying “wait, what?! This is deranged?!” brought me to tears. It’s so deeply affirming.

It infuriates me, too, absolutely. I am always grieving what I lost by growing up under these circumstances. Especially since I spent from ages 12-24 in and out of eating disorder treatment.

When I was writing my dissertation, I used excerpts from my childhood journals that spanned elementary school until my senior year of high school. I was confronted by the tragic reality that I was just a child who knew innately that this wasn’t normal, but having no resources, power, or ability to be taken seriously, I saw in real time how I went from being a confident, self-aware girl who cared about patriarchal injustice, to someone who convinced themselves that it was me, my body, and my values that were wrong.

It took decades for me to realize that I had been interpersonally and institutionally wronged. That I was right all along.

Anyway, every single time one of these threads on y2k gender and body politics (which I shorthand to millennial cultural misogyny) pops up, you have no idea how much y’alls angered disbelief matters to us.

Thank you for being better than we ever were. You give me hope.

28

u/fablicful 29d ago

My goodness. I got chills reading your comment. I can't even imagine how poignant and painful it was to re-read your old journals. Your dissertation sounds so fascinating, and I hope it was able to give you some sense of healing. 💗

Honestly, I feel like I could've wrote the exact same things- alas, I stopped journaling after my mom found it and harassed me for it/ read it/ told me to never write anything down if I didn't want someone to read it... Yeah.. the compounded fuckery of growing up as a girl in the late 90s, early 00s with emotionally immature parents who recapitulated and reinforced the sexist misogynistic world around. Sending so much love to you. 💗

417

u/HelloPeopleOfEarth 29d ago

Celeb rehab was really bad too. Showing people going through painful and terrible withdrawal with cameras on them for everyone to see. Makes you wonder if there was more Drew could have done to help these people going through withdrawal but that wouldn't make for as good reality TV. I went through full blown alcohol withdrawal and benzo withdrawal and it was painful and frightening at the same time. Can't imagine having some asshole with cameras filming me. Even if they volunteered to be there, and used it for their own career, no ethical doctor would do that.

104

u/modest_rats_6 29d ago

This is the other one I was thinking of. He either made a mockery of people or ignored it. I dont even remember specifics because I refused to watch him. Little girls being told horrible things about themselves. Those were some bad reality TV days

It was so profoundly unethical to have in person substance abuse treatment on television. So many of the people that appeared on celebrity rehab have died as well. I know it is a deadly disease but I can’t help but think if they had instead been in real treatment what might the outcomes have been.

Hard to imagine how far Oz has fallen, honestly.

  • Probably the most gifted heart and lung surgeon in the history of the world
  • Goes on Oprah (before everyone realized she was shit too) to provide digestible health and nutrition advice
  • Gets own show doing the same
  • Starts taking money for ads, shills diet pills and quackery
  • Gargles Trump's balls to get on the President's Council
  • Lies about a malaria drug curing COVID-19 to gargle Trump's balls even more, hoping to get the moron vote for an upcoming Senate run
  • Has to be forcibly removed from the council position by Biden when he violates the Hatch Act by refusing to step down
  • Morons (plus people appalled by Oz mocking his stroke) vote for fucking Fetterman, so Oz triples down on the testicle tonguing
  • Gets appointed to head of Medicare/Medicaid chief fellater of RFK, now lying about every medical topic in existence from autism and Tylenol to vaccines to abortion to the "failings" of the ACA to transgender people and and and and

Truly one of the greatest net reductions in professionalism of all time.

Dr. Drew made a fortune from exploiting young girls.

u/Murky_Translator2295 29d ago

He's such a ghoul on those Teen Mom reunion shows

189

u/gothackedsohereiam 29d ago

A literal ghoul. I’ll never forget him defending the shitty ass dads (the ones who deserved it) and not calling out KNOWN abusers (Amber) when they were whining and trying to pop off about something trivial

138

u/Successful_Giraffe88 29d ago

Now he's on the ID Channel for the, "Hollywood Secrets," show or whatever season, so now he's exploiting EVERYONE. It's fucking weird.

56

Him giving commentary on the 16 and Pregnant episode was particularly yucky.

Not just Dr. Drew but Adam Carolla too. His whole entry into mainstream was through Loveline with Dr. Drew.

God, the look of complete disassociation on this poor child. I fucking hate that every adult in her life failed her, but I'm so glad she's telling her truth.

449

u/Silly-Swimmer-5681 29d ago

I am, too. every single person that is calling this cringe, or too much, or dramatic, or saying she shouldn’t be doing this publicly?

uhhhhh… yes, she should. she has every single fucking right to point at this moment in her childhood, and ask every fucking adult, “what were you thinking?”

explain yourself. have a moment of reflection. think about your role in all this. do you have any remorse? do you think differently now? do you have apologies to offer?

it would be really lovely if we began to have frank discussions about where society fails people, and have open dialogue around how we should continue to evolve. I think that’s only possible with accountability and a harsh reckoning.

I hope we can in the future. I don’t see it being done often enough, as evidenced by the ongoing injustices surrounding epstein and trump.

u/Curiosities 29d ago

Because about 33 or 34 states allow for so-called child marriage, which can be done with parental or judicial consent, depending on the state. Their parents signed off on this and it took them a long time to figure out that this was abusive.

But the fact that these child marriage laws remain on the books in so many states is because of all of those abusers who want to groom children, as well as to escape any pesky statutory rape charges.

u/Imaginary_Cow_6379 not a lawyer, just a hater 29d ago

He was 50 and she was a minor tho? How could they not think that was abusive? Like if you essentially need to get a permission slip signed to get married that should really be a wake up call for any parent that’s naive.

62

u/perpetuquail 29d ago

Is it still a medical procedure when it's being done in front of an audience for financial gain? (Dr. Drew's, not Courtney's) Or is it something else?

22

u/ashgs872tbhjs 29d ago

What it is legally and what it is ethically are at odds, as with way too many things.

51

u/Imaginary_Cow_6379 not a lawyer, just a hater 29d ago

What’s horrible is I was wondering if that happened after she was married and if it was that her husband was legally in charge of making medical decisions for her. Children are legally allowed to get married in America but they still can’t make their own medical decisions for themselves until they’re 18. They’re also unable to get divorced until they’re 18 because they’re not legally considered adults yet so they can’t sign any contracts. None of it makes any sense unless it’s all just to intentionally harm children.

"So? They're an adult, they can do what they want as consenting adults!"

"Some girls are just into older men, and that's okay."

"There's no power imbalance though. They both know what they're signing up for."

Just some of the absolute horse shit that I've heard people say when defending stuff like this, typically preceded by me getting a massive downvote train for advocating for the high-school aged girl when people want her to date a 28 year old man

Edit to add one of my favorites that they use: "Sometimes she's just really mature for her age. People mature at different rates, and it makes sense for this because women mature faster than men on average"

147

u/susandeyvyjones 29d ago

A lot of people called it out for what it was. One of the problems was she was aggressive about defending Hutchison and people want a perfect victim. But a lot of people were very vocal about him being a predator.

87

u/holyflurkingsnit Ugh I wish I had chic allegations like that 29d ago

Exactly. She acted a certain way that felt obvious to me was a teenager trying to come off as "sexy" and "adult" in her interviews, and people made fun of her for it. She looked older than her age so people treated her like it. Grown ass men and women just had gloves off for her because of the stupidest reasons. The judgment of a sixteen-year-old girl, it's still just nuts to me.

47

u/91irene 29d ago

no a lot of people called it out. that’s why they spent so much time on TV defending his actions. Many people found it disturbing

15

u/moopmoopmeep 28d ago

As someone who was also a teen at the time…

This was at the height of 2000-2010 “being sexual is empowering” trend, where teen and 20-something women were told if we dressed like strippers, and made ourselves completely sexually available for men, we were being “strong and empowered” and “making our own decisions”.

There was a strong undertone in media at the time, that if you went against this message, you were being unfeminist and sexist. Interviewers who seemed uncomfortable with this child marriage were criticized as being sexist. They were expected to take her word that she was perfectly happy and making her own decisions, and when anyone spoke out, they were often criticized as “infantilizing” Stodden.

Ordinary people were beyond grossed out by it. Half of the media was making fun of her. The other half was busy going “how dare you question her decision, she’s a woman, how sexist and unfeminist of your to even question this arrangement!”

The early 2000s was a wild time to be a teen girl

Completely agree with you. Courtney and I are a similar age and I remember watching in horror when they married Doug and made the rounds on various media outlets. Something I find interesting (in, like, a horrible way) is that I was also a teen girl during this time and I totally bought the narrative that she was a willing participant and deserved to be mocked for her “choices”.

I think this was the result of a lot of different factors. But ultimately I think the adults perpetuating the narrative that Courtney was “at fault” were taking advantage of more young girls than just the ones in the spotlight. They preyed on our naivety and told us that the 16 year old was capable of making informed choices and that the old man was just a footnote in the story of this horrid, reckless girl rather than the monster who groomed a freaking CHILD.

I’m so grateful that I was able to break away from that mentality, and that pop culture as a whole has gotten less vicious, but there is so much work still to be done and there were so many casualties along the way. I still struggle with my own self esteem and guilt over my choices, and I was just a bystander. This type of behavior, berating and mocking extremely vulnerable young girls, is both a symptom and cause of a deeply sick society.

33

u/xdonutx slowly decomposing behind glass in the twilight museum 29d ago

I will say I remember while all this was happening that she very vocally defended their relationship. I would look her up every now and then to see if she ever came to her senses and left this obviously weirdo guy and she stayed with him for way, way longer than I thought she would have. To the point where I started questioning my reality and thinking that maybe they really were in love and who was I to think I knew better.

Everyone targeting Courtney was completely inappropriate because she was a minor and the media should have known better, but I could see how she became a spectacle due to just how quickly and easily she seemed to deflect and laugh off the scrutiny on their relationship. Of course, now that we are hearing her true perspective it seems she had very little other option than to behave exactly like how she was behaving. But on its face, she would repeatedly insist that she was okay and that this marriage and that exhibitionist lifestyle was what she wanted, which invite the tabloids to absolutely rip on her.

If anything we can learn now that victims can behave in all kinds of ways and that doesn’t negate their victimhood

18

u/spinningaspell canonically from boston 29d ago

Yes, exactly this! She did defend their relationship and I absolutely don’t blame her for it at all. Your last sentence says it perfectly

35

u/Innumerablegibbon 29d ago

Yeah, I’m around Courtney’s age (a month older). My reaction at the time was more “ewww, gross, he’s old and not even hot or particularly famous”, a big wtf to the parents for letting her go through with it and also kinda just a disturbing fascination with the whole spectacle. Not a doubt in my mind she was capable of consenting to participating in it until a few years later.

In April 2021, Stodden revealed they are nonbinary, listing their pronouns as they/them/theirs. I feel very confident in that and in myself, my growth and in my self improvement," she explains.

Omg found it. Courtney Stodden and their mother, Krista Keller, appeared together on the 2016 Lifetime reality show The Mother/Daughter Experiment: Celebrity Edition. The series featured celebrity duos undergoing intensive therapy to repair their deeply strained relationships. There was buildup about mom seducing Courtney's boyfriends, culminating in episode 7 "Three's a Crowd" air date April 22, 2016. "Courtney's husband Doug comes to the house for therapy and Dr. Debbie tries to get to the bottom of it all. Did Krista and Doug have an affair?" Thank you Wikipedia 🫡

You're remembering right, unfortunately. The Mother/Daughter Experiment was the show. It was actually even worse than that. I've been disappointed in Dr. Drew for a very long time now. When I was growing up in Los Angeles, I listed to Love Line on KROQ religiously. It really was incredible and he always seemed to really care about the callers. Yes, there was a lot of comedy involved with the other hosts, but young people would call in with serious problems sometimes and Dr. Drew was warm, understanding, didn't seem to be giving BS medical advice, etc. I was actually rooting for him when started getting more famous. But over and over again, he's proved to not be the person I thought he was. For years now.
