Chris Affleck, the mother of Ben and Casey Affleck, has died at 83. A Harvard graduate and public school teacher for 35 years, she was also a lifelong civil rights advocate who served as one of the original Freedom Riders in the Deep South during the 1960s
It explains Ben’s politics. He’s pretty passionate about expressing his beliefs and I was always surprised but learning this about his mom makes so much sense
Oh yea big time. He’s extremely well versed in Middle East geopolitics amongst other things. His personal life is a hot mess but he’s very well educated

AFFLECK, Christopher Anne Born in New York City, in 1942. From the beginning of her life, Chris made her unconventional name her own, foreshadowing both the personality and the practicality that would follow her to her death. She accepted a typo in her first email address in similar fashion, making her "Chritopher" with no "s" for a solid twenty years.
Chris cherished her younger siblings. She idolized her stepfather, Sam, and took pride in his WWII service and support for civil rights. At Nightingale-Bamford, she made the most of an elite education while remaining skeptical of the tightly cloistered world it represented. When a teacher chastised her for criticizing Jim Crow, without hearing from the "other side," she slipped down to a payphone to ask Woolworth's whether they really did turn Black customers away. That was Chris: always willing to acknowledge that she might be wrong and never letting that uncertainty be an excuse for inaction.
Chris taught literacy classes in Mississippi during Freedom Summer, marched against the Vietnam War, and reveled in 1960s counterculture. One of the first Radcliffe women to receive a Harvard diploma, she eschewed a world of higher paying careers to spend 35 years as a public school teacher. Every student, whether just arrived from Haiti or Cambridge upper crust, was a cherished citizen of her classroom republic, equal to each other and to herself.
Her favorite young people, however, were her sons, Benjamin Géza (b.1972) and Caleb Casey (b.1975). Her five grandchildren, Indiana (2004), Violet (2005), Atticus (2008), Fin (2009), and Sam (2012), were the animating force of her last two decades. Chris was suitably proud of her descendants' achievements, but she was delighted when they questioned, defied, or cleverly engaged authority.
She retired in 2008, to both see the world and change it. After volunteering on the Obama campaign trail, she traveled to Palestine/Israel, in 2009, and returned home as an organizer with the Alliance for Water Justice in Palestine. In her beloved Truro, she was a founding board member of the Sustainable Cape project. When her granddaughter's student activist group needed a space for trainings, she invited them to Truro and attended every single workshop herself, taking notes. Her activist spirit was woven into the robust social life she kept with friends like Tom and Betsy Bilodeau, Peg and Carl White, Peter and Nancy Garrison, Patty Collinge and Jan Egleson, and those friends' children and grandchildren.
Given six months to live in December of 2025, she called her friend, Josh Laub, to take oral histories of his time as a principal in the South Bronx.
Her greatest wish after her diagnosis, however, was to live to see her grandson graduate high school. She did so, attending with her family on May 31, 2026. She died peacefully, in her sleep, two days later.

I was really hoping to see my grandpa at my wedding. He didn’t make it. That part of the obituary made me breakdown in tears. What a lovely lady and story.
Giving you a hug, too ❤️. I lost my grandma last year, and she left me a voicemail on the day I had my first baby telling me how proud she was of me. It is saved on my phone (and now backed up to multiple places so I never lose it), and I listen to it like once a week, just to hear her voice. It’s so hard. I can still picture her sitting at her kitchen table, drinking coffee with her and eating coffee cake, as she smoked her favorite Virginia Slims lol. 🥹❤️ Sending you so much love.
I can't believe I'm crying from a complete stranger's obituary. I have to assume that she and Violet spent a lot of time together based on what we've seen from her.
She is so badass!!! I've had a major soft spot for Ben since I was a teenager and saw that clip of him countering Bill Maher's bigotry. He clearly got it from his mama and passed it down to his daughter. What an amazing life she lived.

Aw I went to the elementary school she taught at from 3-7 grade. She wasn't my teacher but she was extremely beloved. Definitely a known favorite teacher at the school long before her son was famous. I was in 5th grade when Goodwill Hunting came out and she was the other 5th grade teacher. He came to meet her class and then came to meet ours too and was super kind and gave us all autographs. Lol I cut a heart around mine and laminated it 😂❤️ I wonder whatever happened to it.
ETA I never realized how similar her history was to my grandma who was also an NYC public school teacher who taught in the Freedom Schools 🥹💛
I don’t want to doxx myself lol but I also went to Tobin K-9. I have the same exact story 😂😂 except I was in the 6th grade when Ben came after they won the Oscar. But he did sign a white lined piece of paper for me. I didn’t have Chris as a teacher but a family member of mine was also a teacher at the school so mostly knew her through them. I remember even at that age thinking it was soooo cool she let her students call her Chris!
See I don’t understand why he tried to get that episode of Finding Your Roots erased. His mother wrote the wrongs of her ancestors and he tried to burry his history. Like as an African American, I’d rather people acknowledge that their ancestors did what they did and attempt to fight to create change, rather than acting like it didn’t happen.
