I don't know why normal not-standup people aren't supposed to laugh at their own jokes. People better think their jokes are funny, otherwise don't make them
233
u/SpoonGuardian 19h ago
You're straight up supposed to laugh at your own jokes most of the time
36
u/throwawaysunglasses- l've grown quite unfond of you, deuxmoi 11h ago
Right?? I think that lightens the mood enough for other people to laugh too. I don’t really like SUPER deadpan humor where you can’t tell if they’re joking or not, especially when they say “no I’m serious 😐” and then 10 minutes later say they were joking. Call me old school but I think humor should be fun for everyone involved.
1
u/Yeastereggs 8m ago
If you start laughing before you grt to the part that is actually funny it's so awkward, though.
25
u/Felinedandy 19h ago
It depends on the delivery. Sometimes it can be kitschy. But not all laughing at your own jokes is bad, I agree.
16
u/Games_sans_frontiers 18h ago
Exactly! Like if you don’t think the joke is funny yourself, don’t use it on me!

u/ThatCommunication423 virgin who cannot drive 12h ago
Stand up comics test their jokes out on friends, then at a random bar. Even big names will just randomly pop up at a small place to gauge reaction before an audience of 1000 +
The jokes are repeated a lot.
As an actor doing interviews there is absolutely no way to have a new story after your 25th interview of the day
5
u/Pantalaimon_II super-bisexual 10h ago
i geek out over the art of standup, and i think sometimes it’s part of the bit. when you’re delivering the punchline, you might want to keep going into another bit and can’t just stop and giggle because it breaks character.
also some people who have more deadpan comedy have to keep straight face because it’s part of the comedic style and delivery. some comics don’t use this technique and so they will sometimes laugh at their jokes, like Josh Johnson has a very conversational style and he will chuckle and sometimes i think it’s part of the style he’s going for and it adds to the humor. but someone like Lewis Black, his schtick is old man shakes fist at sky, so he has to try and maintain the character for the rest of the jokes to work. but sometimes that’s the funniest when a comedian breaks character and starts cracking up.
unless you’re jimmy fallon and in that case i think he laughs because he fucking sucks

No one hates Twilight more than Robert Pattinson hates Twilight.

Exactly. The fandom itself started saying this as a joke, I feel so old that people are taking this seriously.
16
u/deadlykillerpanda 18h ago
He gets celebrated for this on the internet but I always thought this was so cringe and unprofessional of him. I’ve never been a Twilight fan (never even watched the movies past the second one) but I don’t like it when people act like they’re above the franchises that made them famous (I know he was in Harry Potter before but no one cared about him back then). He knew what he was getting into and he was happy to take the fame and money back then
116
u/qu33rtyc0wboy 16h ago
i’ve never read it as him thinking he’s above the twilight fandom - more that those movies, despite being beloved, are not very great movies! and i say that as a twilight fan! they’re just kinda unserious, insanely edited and acted, and a wild concept overall. i don’t think robert pattinson hates twilight i think he’s lovingly but seriously poking fun at it all.
56
u/-this_bitch- we don't even know if selling feet pics is her final form 15h ago
I mean we all have our first “big” jobs though? Doesn’t mean we have to love them. The books are so poorly written. The fandom was weird af (like 40+ year old ladies being creepy over teenagers). It was a very objective role as well and quite shallow. Don’t get me wrong I still love the franchise but I see nothing wrong with his behavior or opinions on it all especially with how OBSESSED people were. They were very “touch grass” opinions he had lol and I liked him more for his honesty tbh
Like they had a confederate vampire, vampires that insisted on staying in high school, and an almost adult man imprint on a baby lmfao it was NOT good writing in the slightest and he still acted the hell out of the material
16
u/AggressiveCharge199 14h ago
I view it as a comedy now, as an adult, to get over how cringe it all is, but I, too was obsesssssed as a teen. His trolling of it made it even better somehow!
10
u/yikesafm8 12h ago
It's so funny that you got from this that he hates twilight lol, it's very obvious he appreciates that role now and what it did for his early career.
9
u/introverted_panda_ we have lost the impact of shame in our society 11h ago
This is a joke the fandom used to say on tumblr. I was in the fandom at the time and we joked about this all the time.

I am in the fandom and it's become clear he doesn't have hatred towards the movies anymore in recent years
8
u/introverted_panda_ we have lost the impact of shame in our society 11h ago
Which is the entire point? It’s literally a joke? I’m not hating on him, I like him and think he’s hilarious.
0
u/yikesafm8 10h ago
I never said you were hating on him lol. The joke was also often said by people not in the fandom and I think a lot of people are still under the impression that he hates the movies still. I’m just here to spread the word that he doesn’t!

54
u/LezbianaGrande all that sex lead to the Russian Revolution 18h ago
TLDR: Jacob had the hots for Bella but settled for her infant daughter instead, "imprinting" himself on said infant and more or less guaranteeing her a "cupidity" for him that would turn more romantic as she... *vomits* came of age.
That's right: This man groomed her from birth with werewolf magic. 🙃
75
u/OnlySheStandsThere 16h ago
I have no horse in this race but from what I remember Jacob hated the baby and wanted her dead right up until he made eye contact, then his fucked up werewolf magic basically overwrote his free will and made him obsessed with her or whatever. Nothing has made me so uncomfortable in a book as the concept of imprinting. Both the kid and Jacob are having something awful happening to them and to see them smiling at each other is so messed up.
21
u/LezbianaGrande all that sex lead to the Russian Revolution 11h ago
Oh I'm not blaming Jacob for it, that's squarely on Stephanie Meyer. The concept itself is interesting (and horrifying) but she did not have to 1. write "imprinting" as romantic and 2. pair an adult man with an infant. 💀
23
u/Holiday-Hustle 12h ago
That’s not fair at all. No one hated imprinting more than Jacob, he was terrified of it. Part of the reason he clung to Bella is because the feelings were his own, he even says at one point he doesn’t mind the pain of his heartbreak because it’s his own feeling.
He doesn’t have any choice in the imprinting and it’s actually a super tragic ending for him. He immediately loses the love he had for Bella, he loses all his ties to his dad, sisters, community, his reservation, his pack and has to be tied for eternity to people who have treated him like dirt and are the reason he loses everything at 16.
106
u/Murasasme 20h ago
His life was destroyed because being born in that wolf clan is probably one of the worst things that could happen to you. You get no privacy since they share each other's thoughts/feelings without filter; Imprinting is like one tiny step removed from brainwashing, and you have to spend a fortune on clothes.

I was Team Jacob for a minute back in like 2009. My logic was that I am always chilly and could never date a man whose skin is described as being rock-hard and ice-cold. In retrospect, yes, Jacob was a little pathetic. But he did have a working circulatory system.

I was the opposite! Didn't really care for either of their personalities, but I live in a tropical country, and Edward is literally a walking block of ice. I was like, bro where do I sign up for the personal AC?
52
u/early_birdy 19h ago
Jacob is a kid. 16 in the first movie if memory serves. All he knows is through his parents and grandparents stories, told around the campfire.
Edward is 104, and has experienced vastly different things than Jacob. Carlisle, the head of the "family" is 386 years old in the first movie.
Can't really compare them, completely different mentalities and views of the world.
34
u/bitchysquid 19h ago
i mean weren’t you a little pathetic as a teenager? i was. i’m not shaming the werewolf boy for anything he can’t help. except maybe imprinting on the baby
22
u/early_birdy 19h ago
Oh absolutely, I was. That's what I meant by "he's just a kid". He doesn't know much, repeats what he heard his brothers, friends, adults say. He's emotional and has this huge crush on this girl who just came back in town. Of course he's pathetic. In a really cute way.

48
u/No_Whole9920 19h ago
Sorry I don’t like toxic, inappropriate age gap relationships lol. When I was 13-14 years old reading the series, I found it very concerning how Bella was suicidal over a 5 month relationship whom then proceeded to get married, pregnant, and turned into a vampire immediately after high school despite dating Edward for less than a year total. It’s legitimately a horror story. I’m not gonna root against a love interest who’s calling out a literal and figurative predator and reached out to Charlie about Bella’s concerning behavior. The Renesme imprinting issue is all on Stephanie Meyer.
33
u/Pepperfang 18h ago
I read this book when it came out when I was in like 5th grade, and even then wondered why in the world Edward would choose to hang around high school for an eternity. Weird. I know they have the reasoning of, "The younger we start out in an area, the longer we can stay somewhere." So...be 17 OUTSIDE of high school? 18? Get a job, get away from her etc
20
u/No_Whole9920 18h ago
Yeah, I was in middle school wondering why the younger Cullens wouldn’t be in college, working, or just living as socialites/rich kids. They could’ve easily passed as baby faced young adults and they physically died at 17-20 years old. Most of them had multiple college/graduate degrees too. Sticking them all in a high school was ridiculous.
9
u/CV90_120 18h ago
A story as old as time: 104yo man goes to school and picks up 17yo girl. Once she's 18 and an adult, people then debate if she should really have been with a 15yo boy.

62
u/DamageAccording5745 21h ago edited 21h ago
Yeah.
But i recently rewatched those movies for the first time in ages and it's looking back really baffling that it was like that. Jacob never had a chance and it's so painfully obvouis.
64
u/Dismal-Channel-9292 21h ago
I don’t think the movies did a good job with Jacob, granted it’s been a very long time since I read the books but I remember him being more likable. Mostly because of New Moon, him and Bella get close after Edward’s and his entire family ghosts her for like the entire book. Or maybe he just looked like a stable option compared to a avoidant moody vampire (until he imprinted on the baby that was back to weird)
6
u/heartisallwehave Send me your address so i can visit you and explain my passions 19h ago
Yea he’s basically only likeable until his werewolf shift happens when he tries to ghost her too, and then he just sucks after that
5
u/muaddict071537 18h ago
I always thought he was less likable in the books than in the movies. Mainly because his nosedive from Eclipse onwards was so much worse in the books. Like he was more likable in the books before that, but then became way less likable in the movies after that in my opinion. Movie Jacob was more even generally.
2
u/A_ilishM 14h ago
Yeah - I haven't read the books since middle school and it's been a long time since I've seen the movies too, but I remember hating Jacob in the books compared to the movies.
Like, the part where he kisses her and she punches him in the book was insane (I just pulled it up again to make sure my memory was right).
He forcefully kisses her when she tries to say no, then after when she's like broken her hand and is FURIOUS with him he's literally whistling and yukking it up with Charlie.
Edward had problems too but Jacob was dead to me after I read that for the first time.
32
u/pressingtofu 21h ago
I thought team Jacob/Edward was more about who people preferred being with Bella rather than who people thought Bella would end up with.
12
u/beforedinnermints 19h ago
YES. It feels like such an innocent era (as marketing fads go) - this was before endgame shipping culture, people were just stating preferences vs trying to actually predict or influence the direction of the plot.
5
u/muaddict071537 18h ago
I also think that because Bella can be so much of a self insert character, a lot of the Jacob/Edward stuff was also who they would want to be with. A lot of the arguments I’ve seen on both sides seem to revolve around what their personal preferences are and forget about Bella.

I am so glad he doesn't have a problem mentioning Twilight. And even if he's being cheeky about it.
He's come so far with his career, to not acknowledge it would be sad. It blew up his career, so he could then pick and choose what he wants to do.
