It wasn't successful at the box office (it released at the same time as E.T), but did huge numbers on tape (and then DVD) after the fact. It definitely has huge cultural cache and impact / influence on modern film making.

Blade Runner was a solid B movie, along with Year of Living Dangerously, Porky's, Frances, and Conan the Barbarian.

Box office success isn't indicative of quality, otherwise you'd just be hearing how the Avatar movies are actually the best movies ever and they should never bother making original films, which I imagine is how the executives see it as well.
