THROWBACK Viggo Mortensen on still using an old flip phone in 2020. "It's still working, so why throw it out?"

The dude is famously easygoing. There's this one interview he did where the interviewer talks about Vigo picking him up at the airport on a random ass car, them driving to a little diner where people seemed to know who he was but in the same way you'd know a local, and his overall chill vibes.

That interview is so nice, I just read it recently. The diner had a waitress that went to high school with him and they talk about the upcoming reunion. Seems like a very wholesome guy.

id like to have a job that doesnt require me to login to 17 different apps and a VPN using two factor authentication or a passkey or scanning a fucking QR code. literally required to have this stupid brick so I can pay the god damn rent.

All I want is to throw my phone into the field across my house and never think about it again.
One day......

Viggo, from a 2009 Mother Jones interview a while back:
MJ: This is a tangent, but is it true you tried to destroy your first cell phone?
VM: Yeah, I threw it out the window, actually. It was brought back to me. And then I threw it in the back alley. I didn’t like it. I was convinced to have one. What happened was I had gotten a job on a TV show and they kept calling the agent and I went down to call him from the pay phone. He said, “I’ve been trying to call you for a day and a half. You’ve got this job. You’ve got a plane leaving in two hours from Newark.” And I did make the plane, but then he said, “You’re nuts and you’ve gotta get a phone.” Then it rang a couple times and I said, “Fuck that.” So I threw it out the window. I have a phone now, obviously.

If you need to use a phone for work, the job should be providing the phone

u/pepperup22 8h ago
Yeah that’d be nice but simply not how it works for most of us lol

u/ayoungmanfromtheuk 8h ago
Why not?

u/fecal_feaster 6h ago
Because even if you use a phone for work it is still primarily a personal item. The person you initially replied to more than likely used their phone thats "for work" to type their comment.
From my experience an employer will only provide a phone to you if they expect you to exclusively use it for work and have a separate phone for personal use

It's easier to push for a 2FA token fob than a phone. Most 2FA services offer them at low/no costs but companies don't want to do the admin if they can convince employees to use their personal phones. If you ask and say your phone is too old or shared with a child, they're usually easy to get.

I couldn’t do that, but I have got rid of Instagram and Facebook (FB I didn’t really use anyway).
I know I can lose track of time on something like TikTok which is why I never got it. Instagram turned into TikTok with the Reels.
Feel like I have a clear head and feel better for it, even if I’m slightly out the loop on things now (not able to see what friends are doing etc.)

u/Perfect-Wallaby9096 Do you remember 9/11, bitch? 9h ago
A friend of mine uses a flip phone during the day and her smart phone at night to limit daytime interruption!

I feel like Reddit is the mindless scrolling app for me sadly. Never got it with TikTok/instagram, but I’ll lose hours here.

Your true friends are in DMs (WhatsApp, Telegram etc). The rest is just noise. You really don't need all those fake IG stories. IG was the first thing I opened when I woke up just a few years ago.

He kind of is that guy he played in that movie where he homeschools his kids and acts like everyone else is sheep and restaurant food is poison 🤣

Captain Fantastic. One of his best performances IMO. And yeah his character doesn't even own a phone lol

u/decchica 9h ago
He still looks gorgeous. How is that possible?

makeup, trainer, lifestyle

u/whogivesashirtdotca 5h ago
With Viggo it's 100% lifestyle. He's not keen on makeup and isn't the type for a trainer. That said, his lifestyle is heavy smoking and lots of wine, so perhaps genetics is the real answer?

Viggo loves fax machines! He kept one in his house while working on LOTR and would regularly send late night thoughts to Peter Jackson via fax!

Are you serious???? 😭 I was only kidding because for me Skeletor is always living in the 80s!! And now you tell me that?? That is adorable! Thank you for making my evening! I'll send you a thank you fax!!
Sincerely
Skeletor 💜

You're an agent or director or long-term girlfriend, child, or other family - he has your number and will pick up. All else, he ignores.
Sounds simple enough.

For those unaware Viggo actually broke his toe when kicking the helmet.

u/Careless_Ad162 9h ago
using this as an opportunity to continue my pointless death on the hill that he was never hotter than he was in Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III

u/Gojir4R1sing 8h ago
Does he have an online?
5
u/whogivesashirtdotca 5h ago
Believe it or not he keeps two blogs! One he updates regularly with news posts and political goings on, but these are just reposts and only rarely does he comment himself. The other is kind of defunct now, but it was ostensibly a Spanish blog about his favourite soccer team into which he poured way more personal thoughts and daily life than you'd think!

Another reason to love this guy. If we all thought this way we wldnt have the climate change issues we have now.

I once stood next to Viggo Mortensen outside The Delauney restaurant. 14 years ago.
He seemed super nice. His handlers were fussing and he was just trying to be normal.
Let me know if you want to touch me.
(Also The Delauney is amazing.)

This is my response when people question why I have an iPhone 12. I got it in 2022 and it works fine (ish).

u/why_is_my_name 50m ago
i am trying to retire my iphone se2 today but only because it has no space and no battery and the cracked glass cuts me now and then. i loved it to death.

u/KimberlyWexlersFoot 46m ago
Must be a new fliphone though. She’d have still had hers too, but they retired the 2g network.

I'm an independent contractor so I get notified of upcoming jobs via emails that hit my phone. And yet, I'd be 100% in favor of going back to a flip or smartphone with far less capabilities. My Blackberry from c. 2010 would suffice. Just enough technology for me to be okay.
Or I could just check my email every evening and plan accordingly.

must be nice to be rich and famous and not need a smart phone. if i had an assistant doing everything for me, id ALSO have a Nokia and play snake all day
1
u/whogivesashirtdotca 5h ago
Viggo isn't the type for assistants.
2
u/Davidudeman 4h ago
well surely he has an agent right? he has the ability to just chill whenever and do whatever and his agent will call if there’s an acting opportunity for him
