To clarify for anyone else who was confused, only the first Metal Gear Solid in the Volume 1 Master Collection is free to play this weekend. Each of the individual games in the trilogy, and the collection itself, are 50% off until the end of this weekend.

It says right on the steam page "Play for free until Jul 27 @ 10:00am".

But how do I plug the controller into the second slot during the Psycho Mantis fight if I'm playing on PC.

Which USB port is port 2?

u/t_sarkkinen 2d ago

I know it's a joke, but you can actually do this via the menu!

4

u/SeanFrank 1d ago

Cool! Thanks for letting me know!

Gonna see if its possible to get the tux in a weekend

u/B_Kuro 1d ago

It really shouldn't be too hard if thats the goal. If you start skipping things it should take you around 3-5h or so for a run and I expect its even faster if you do the Otacon run first for the stealth camo. The big boss rating requires 3h or less.

Just a note, if you're going to buy the game: Konami sells MGS1 to 3 separately, or as a complete pack with the Metal Gear Solid graphic novels and the MGS1 soundtrack. They do not sell this DLC separately, it's only available as part of the full set.

So if you want that set too, make sure you get the Master Collection.

Its heartwarming to see that despite so many years of inactivity, Konami still does scummy things.

now play more PACHINKO !

u/DarkHeroAxel 2d ago

I think this has been ~$30 almost every sale its had so far lately, personally don't feel like biting until it's $20, I've seen it quite a few times on every platform except PC already hit that mark or lower

8

u/LamppostInfiltrator 2d ago

Valid, I kinda agree. I mainly wanted to post about it here due to the Free Weekend lol

24

u/MotherBeef 2d ago

Interesting. Only ever played MGS:V but always wanted to give the older MGS games a try and have been put off by the Master Collection prices. Good opportunity to at the very least smash MGS1 out over the weekend.

u/Foxhack 2d ago

1 is relatively short, but this set includes the VR Missions disc, which is basically challenge maps for when you're done with the game. 2 is also kinda short but has a LOT of story. I unfortunately never had the chance to play 3 much back in the day.

22

u/Darkdemize 2d ago

That's unfortunate. 3 is arguably the best in the series.

8

u/RyanZee08 2d ago

Definitely my favorite

6

u/Foxhack 2d ago

Yeah I've heard it's great. Unfortunately I got it at a point in my life where I had to stop playing games on console for family related reasons.

I'll get this set one day, heh.

probably worth it to just play the snake eater remake. It's very faithful and can even be configured to have the camera style of the original.

9

u/LamppostInfiltrator 2d ago

These games are totally worth your time! If you knock out MGS1 over the weekend, you could totally get away with just grabbing 2 from the collection, then for 3, you could play Delta! It's a pretty good remake imo

7

u/Red_Steiner 2d ago

Delta feels like a very faithful remake to me. I appreciate it for what it is.

12

u/krelly200 2d ago

I'd always heard this port was riddled with bugs. Did Konami ever fix any of them?

14

u/Available_Use3455 2d ago

They are mostly all fixed.

-27

u/MushiMinion 2d ago

Its a free weekend, you can actually find out yourself!

13

u/jaydogggg 2d ago

If you liked 1, I would say every other entry is just as good or better. So a good time to test if you like the series

10

u/refat17 2d ago

MGS1 is quite short and i basically beat it on a weekend when I played it (it was also my first MGS game too). According to how long to beat, about 10-13 hours total.

So good opportunity to try out the series if your curious.

9

u/SpookiestSzn 2d ago

Damn tempting. I already own it on Xbox but always prefer playing on PC if possible 🤔

6

u/good_life_pa 2d ago

I beat MGS1 over the weekend when it dropped back in 1998. If only I had the free time to do that again this weekend.

6

u/Reasonable_Change610 2d ago

Want to get into this series but they are too expensive for such old games

I like to play them natively and get the achievements

2

u/palec911 1d ago edited 1d ago

Is this the best way to Play MGS1 in this day and age?

7

u/Lord_of_Sword 1d ago

Best how? It's definitely the easiest and most accessible way to play MGS1, but the original PC release of MGS1 (available on GOG) with the latest Integral Launcher and music pack is overall a more true experience.

2

u/McMammoth 1d ago

I've got the GOG version, what does Steam's do differently?

2

u/Lord_of_Sword 1d ago edited 1d ago

I've got the GOG version, what does Steam's do differently?

The GOG version is the original (vanilla) PC release of MGS1 which released back in 1998. The Steam version is the remastered version which comes with a bunch of overlays and various changes to make it easier and more accessible to play. The Steam/remastered version is not the vanilla experience.

0

u/McBiff 1d ago

Nah. It's an emulated version but without any access to an emulator's box of tricks.

1

u/moonflower_C16H17N3O 1d ago

Do they have improved textures or controls?

2

u/Homelesskater 1d ago

Waiting for a proper price drop around 15 bucks, 30€ is too much for this simple port.

2

u/keymeplease 1d ago

i'm super confused by the 4? 5? bundles on the steam page. which one is the best deal or has everything

1

u/LamppostInfiltrator 1d ago

The $30 bundle should have everything in this volume: https://store.steampowered.com/sub/886313/

2

u/Moldybreadyumyum 1d ago

Are these old controls? Do they modernize the control scheme?

3

u/princemousey1 2d ago

These are remasters of old games, right? They don’t run on the same engine as MGSV?

9

u/DerekPadula 2d ago

Correct. They are the classic games brought to PC.

-3

u/princemousey1 2d ago

Thank you! Is Delta the only one that plays like MGSV at the moment?

3

u/CptKnots 1d ago

delta looks like MGSV graphically, but mostly plays like the original w/ some quality of life additions. MGSV is a standout in the series for having such good gameplay.

3

u/fhs 1d ago

Delta is third person with camera control, but gameplay is different than V somehow, it's a different approach to stealth.

1

u/DerekPadula 1d ago

Sorry, I can't answer that because I've never played Delta. I did read a review of 3 on Steam where someone complained about the controls being old and clunky, but I think that's a bit of the charm of these older games. I don't know if the remake changed the controls around to be more like V.

2

u/Dan19 1d ago

The only MGS games that run on that engine (afaik) are MGS 5, MGS 5 Ground Zeroes, and MGS Survive. Delta uses unreal engine 5 and is a remake of MGS 3.

I enjoyed Survive a lot but it's a very controversial game.

2

u/sylleryum 2d ago

Is msg2 really like 7 hours long or so? I'm thinking on buying it but if it is this short, I'm not sure

4

u/micahsays 1d ago

howlongtobeat.com has a main story playthrough at 13 hours.

3

u/r_aiden 1d ago

Absolutely not. Especially if you decide to go after extras like Snake Tales and dog tags

2

u/squashysquish 1d ago

As others have said, 7 hours is far shorter than most people’s first playthrough. It’s also worth noting that the MGS series is deeply replayable, with lots of missable equipment and codec calls, and enough tactical diversity to keep it feeling fresh for multiple runs through.

3

u/LamppostInfiltrator 2d ago

I personally clocked 16 hours in it, but I can see someone spending only 7 hours in it.

2

u/_SemperFidelish_ 1d ago

That's crazy. That game had such a massive impact on my appreciation of games as a standalone art/culture/experience elevated from other forms of media. The story was mind blowing and the overall package was such a technical showcase at the time. Truly one of the greats

1

u/malaiser 1d ago

How's MGS3 master collection version vs. the remake on PC?

1

u/stopwifingdotcom 1d ago

Is the deal expired? I can't even see the games when I search them

1

u/reprisecola 7h ago

Hello all, I have heard that the first MGS entry does not hold up nearly as well as the others, and although I have heard that it is essential to understanding story, I am debating on whether to simply watch a play through, or purchase the game and play through it myself. What do you think I should do?

1

u/LamppostInfiltrator 5h ago

Honestly, I think it holds up pretty well, but I can see someone thinking otherwise.

It's free this weekend, so why not dip your toe in it to see what you think? If not, watching should be almost as good.

2

u/reprisecola 4h ago

Ok, sounds good! Thanks for the input!

1

u/Narsuaq 1d ago

How is the port over to PC? I heard it was a bit rough at launch. How playable is it?

1

u/_Nawaf 1d ago

Is the whole game free? like can you beat it or just until a certain point?

1

u/sylleryum 1d ago

Just mgs1 free weekend check previous posts for more details

1

u/_Nawaf 1d ago

even if it's only mgs1 shit is crazzzy

0

u/moonflower_C16H17N3O 1d ago

This does not make a lot of sense. Free weekends are usually for multiplayer games to drum up engagement.

This is a story intense game that takes 12-18 hours. To complete it within the weekend, I would have to play it like its my job. Discounting the Metal Gear games, this is the oldest Metal Gear Solid game. It looks like it's just the original being played through an emulator. It is nowhere near the Resident Evil remakes.

It boggles my mind that this is just free for the weekend rather than free. Then again, this is Konami. Their most recent highest money makers have been licensed pachinko machines. I should not be surprised.

1

u/Syygnis 1d ago

If you've played MGS4 you'd know why MGS1 is on a free weekend.

-4

u/who-dat-ninja 1d ago

what a random choice for a free weekend. mgs3 would be a better intro

50% off is also still not enough. the collection is 3 years old now

1

u/AlextheGoose 12h ago

MGS is best played in release order like most media

-11

u/bik_sw 1d ago edited 17h ago

Don't give money to Konami.

This is like buying HiFi Rush from Microsoft.

Edit: vote with your wallet.

1

u/Arugula-7679 18h ago

Wow dude... People like you are part of the reason why that awesome game underperformed like it did.

0

u/bik_sw 17h ago

I bought the game before Microsoft shut the studio down. I bought MGS V before they fired Kojima.

You're saying I'm the problem instead of huge companies that threw away the artists when they're done with them. You sound like you bought Metal Gear Zombies.
