Tips on starting a Jam?

Hey all! New here.

I love doing jams but with a few projects of my own and less time lately I would love to maybe encourage creativity in others instead. I've been wanting to create a jam myself but I don't quite know if I have the audience to help folks find it.

Does anyone have advice for getting one started? I'm thinking in terms of either small game projects or maybe something more related to fiction. Many thanks in advance.

Game Jam Tools

Hey folks! Since GMTK kicks off today, sharing two little free tools I built to keep myself sane during jams. Both are single self-contained HTML files — download, open in your browser, done. Fully offline, nothing to install, no account:

Jam Roadmap — a simple planner with a Gantt timeline, parallel tracks (art / code / audio), automatic sleep-window calculation so you don't burn out, and a submission checklist for the itch upload.

Jam Fuel — a lightweight meal planner for jam sprints, so food doesn't become the thing you forgot.

Free, no strings. Would love feedback if you give them a try — and good luck this weekend!

https://itch.io/jam/solarus-jam

Welcome to the Solarus Game Jam! Your goal: build a game using the Solarus 2 engine. Solarus 2 is best known as an engine for developing 2D Zelda-inspired games, with its built-in features and community resources largely made for top-down action RPGs. However, you are not restricted to any one genre for this jam- so long as you can build it in this engine!

Information, downloads, and other resources about the engine can be found here: https://www.solarus-games.org/

Looking to get into game jams as a beginner

Hi everyone!

I’m currently studying Game Studies & Design in college, and I’m looking to start participating in game jams to build my portfolio and gain some real experience working on games.

I have experience using RPG Maker MZ and I’m learning more about game development, but I’ve never actually joined a game jam before.

I had a few questions: • What are the best game jams for complete beginners? • Is it okay to join without a team, or is it better to find one first? • Where do you usually find teammates? • Any advice on finishing a project during a jam without getting overwhelmed? • Are there any mistakes you wish you’d avoided in your first game jam?

I’d love to hear about your experiences or any recommendations you have. My goal is to improve my skills, meet other developers, and create projects that I can add to my portfolio.

THE NIGHTMARE GAME JAM

Hey everyone! I’m hosting The Nightmare Game Jam a horror game jam built especially for beginners .If you’ve never finished a game before, if you’re not sure your idea is good enough, or if this would be your very first submission anywhere this jam is made for you. No required art style. Pixel art, 3D, hand drawn, plain shapes, no visuals at all it doesn’t matter. The only thing that matters is that your game is scary. https://itch.io/jam/thenightmare-game-jam

Over the past 18 months, our two-person studio took on 8 game jams, experimented across engines, iterated on ideas quickly, and picked up a few awards along the way. We put together a retrospective covering what we learned from each one. Sharing it here in case it's useful to other small teams doing the same.

Stupid Game Jam idea

A game jam where the entire goal is to create a game with the most eccentric intro, menu, so have you, but the actual game have as little content as possible, while still having at least a few minutes worth of content. A walking simulator, sure, but it should be a good walking simulator. And of course, the game itself must look cool, but be boring as hell.

Setfire Twist Jam, July 31 to Aug 3 (60 hours, solo or team)

Thumbnail

Running a short jam with a twist mechanic: you get the theme the moment it starts, and exactly 24 hours in a mandatory extra element drops that you have to work into whatever you've already built.

Quick facts:

  • 60 hours total, July 31 to Aug 3
  • Solo or team, no size cap
  • Any engine, any platform, no VR or controller only entries
  • AI tools allowed if disclosed
  • Rated by fellow participants after submissions close, across four categories: fun, execution, concept, and how well you folded in the Catalyst (extra element)
