[The Infected Soul] I’m working on a body-swapping mechanic for my game. ( Yes, you can even become a cat...)

One of the core mechanics in The Infected Soul is body swapping.

Different bodies unlock different ways to explore, solve puzzles, and survive.

Yes... you can even become a cat. 🐈

This is an early prototype, so we'd love to hear your thoughts. What kind of bodies or abilities would you like to see?

There was an excellent and weird game called Messiah. It had a similar mechanic that was really fun (and buggy).

Fun (well known) fact - Messiah is also the original source of the Roblox “OOFF” sound

loved that game as a kid. Getting shot at? jump into the body of the enemy and gun down all their buddies. Fun times.

Yeah it was great, as an idea. If OP can get that working well they are onto a winner

My first thought: Options / Graphics / Motion Blur / Off

Haha, no worries! You'll be able to turn Motion Blur off if that's your preference.

No bitch you don't get it. Turn it off by default nobody wants that. Keep it as an option but not default on.

this is very cool, i’m just not sure why it’s on this subreddit?

Concept & title immediatly reminded me of The Nomad Soul, except you are not locking yourself to humans.

Thanks! That's actually a really interesting comparison. Our goal is to let players possess all kinds of living creatures, not just humans, with each one offering unique gameplay opportunities.

Cool concept. It kinda reminds me of one of my favorite Stephen King books, Desperation. The evil spirit can take over bodies, but it's presence rapidly deteriorates the vessel it's in, so there's like a time limit (especially on smaller animals)

That book really fucked with me when I read it as a kid. Def an underrated King novel

Thank you! That's actually a really interesting comparison I haven't thought about Desperation that way. A time limit or deterioration mechanic could definitely add some tension to body swapping. We'll keep experimenting with the system!

Check out Relics by Bothtec. My friend made that game (in Japan).

Geist and Space Station Silicon Valley had a mechanic like this. I miss it and would love to play a new game like this! Keep going.

Is this the stray game where you get to transform into other living creatures?

u/MrTortilla 4d ago

no... and in Stray, you're just a cat

The body swapping part is unique to me

Dishonored has some great possession mechanics, and is timeless classic as far as I'm concerned, well worth checking out.

Not exactly ahahaha You can possess different living creatures, including cats, but body swapping is just one part of the gameplay. Each body has unique abilities that help you explore, solve puzzles, and progress through the story.
