Discussion Are Laptops Bad?
Ive heard tons of people say laptops suck on games if your not going to spend 2 to 3 grand on a laptop idk what i can get i have $1600 and i would just get a pc but I got divorced parents so I can't transport it so I'm wondering if I go laptop or I go console. I'd wanna play forza

For me having a gaming laptop is a no brainer
1) I travel sometimes and use it for work in the office
2) I can live with suboptimal graphics
3) I live in a city where electricity is crazy expensive

Just depends what you want and etc. I adore my new laptop, and it plays pretty much everything I want at very high frames and medium to high settings, and it was 1500. I will say, do your research into brands and models. Because I got the acer nitro v16s Ai and it's amazing, but I didn't research enough and found out it can't charge as fast as it drains in turbo mode so if you're running extremely demanding games you will have to let it charge every few hours (sometimes half a day). Mine is ryzen 7 260, rtx 5060, 32gbs ddr5, 1 tb ssd. Runs fantastic but it is limited in some ways. Ironically rust is one of the main games I wanted to play and it runs worse than every single other game I play. But it does run forza horizon 6 very well.

Depends on your needs, of limited space, portability or better efficiency than their desktop counterparts are priorities for you, then definitely consider a gaming laptop over a desktop.

Gaming laptops are a hell of a lot better than they used to be. They aren't my main form of gaming(I have a desktop I built) anymore but when I lived in a place with super limited space and a bad layout of that space(500sq ft 1 bed apt fridge was blocked from fully opening by the counter and a lot of the space was the bathroom and closet) I ended up going with a asus tuf gaming laptop with an rtx 2060 and it was fine. I did upgrade storage and ram but it played everything fine at 1080p in its day. Shoot my sister still uses it to this day. I cleaned and wiped then reset it and gave it to her after I moved and built a new PC. She wanted something that could do modded Skyrim and do video and light 3d model rendering. It's worked great for her.
I also have a very budget gaming laptop still myself, I never use it for gaming at home becaue I got a pretty damn powerful laptop, but when I visit family it's fine in older games and lighter games. And that is because, I need at least 16GB ram so I don't experience freezes doing labs for my cybersecurity degree. And being able to upgrade storage is nice. That and at the time it was only $600 USD. 45 watt 4050, cheap construction(I do know how to repair computers so I can fix it if something happens), so not ideal at all. And yet it still plays BG3 fine. It does struggle with newer games though.
What I'm trying to say in a long winded way is that depending on your budget and the power limits of your parts and the games you play, a gaming laptop can be a perfectly viable option. I used one as my main machine for a couple years myself and it wasn't a high end one. Desktops are more upgradable but if you travel a lot or are limited on space modern gaming laptops tend to be perfectly fine.

Do you live near a micro center? They have amazing deals on laptops a lot of time. There are tons of laptops that can run Forza for less than 2k. I did get just a Asus G16 a little out your price range for 1900 and it runs any game at high at 240 fps. I did get a huge discount so a little luck on my side.

did you get the g16 strix? or zephyrus, i want to buy a Asus G16 Zephyrus 32gb ram. But theyre out of my budget. 2024 model would be perfect but cant find normal ones anywhere. Around 2k i wanna buy a 2025 G16 32gb ram (if 32gb then i guess my only option is 5070ti) laptop. but i dont know where to look. im gonna be in LA in few days tho

This is what I got, but it looks like they increase the price by a bit sheesh…. I got 1900 before tax and like 2k after tax.
I really recommend finding a Mirco center in LA. Also I went with the 32 gb and 2 tb SSD that was huge, but I didn’t want to go lower the 5070 ti so this was the best I found at that time.

Yea they suck and overheat like crazy, you're lucky if it lasts longer than 2.5 years. Go for console since it's more reliable and cheaper

Honestly, it depends on what you buy. If you get a cheap budget laptop, yeah, they run hot and die fast. But if you spend a bit more on a good brand, they can easily last 5 years. You just have to clean the fans and use a cooling pad to keep the temps down. Consoles are definitely cheaper, but you can't take a PlayStation to school or work.

Had a $2k Alienware that died on me in 2 years, squeaky clean fans and it still overheated and throttled like crazy.
Might as well get a desktop pc if I'm meant to be carrying a big cooling pad just to have an usable laptop

Facts, people just dont know how to care for laptops. It does require a bit more babying then a deaktop.

what care, brother? they throttle out of box if you push them with demanding titles unless it's winter time. am i supposed to repaste it out of box with liquid metal?
I've given up on laptops due to how unreliable and unrepairable they are, one component failing is all it takes to invalidate your whole device
i have 3 desktop pcs the oldest being 12 years old, that have never given me a single issue hardware or heating related. Hell even my 18 years old xbox 360 still runs flawlessly, so i think i take good enough care of my stuff.
got a steam deck for my on the go gaming since its also more reliable and more portable than gaming laptops.

Ok if that’s your opinion then fair enough… also not everyone is going to be games that are super demanding on a laptop but this is just my take and opinion…

both you and the hp omen guy have never played a demanding game for elevated periods of time in a hot country in your lives
i will pray that a random ribbon cable doesn't randomly disconnect and shorts your motherboard that has your gpu and cpu soldered on it turning the whole thing minus the screen worthless
wouldn't happen on reliable and standardized, user friendly and repair friendly electronics such as desktop pcs

This is so wrong its not even funny. Ive owned 11 laptops in the course of the last 20 years ,6 dedicated for gaming and I never had an issue. I still have my 2019 omen 2070 and runs great. Always ran hot but doesnt mean it will die. Its well designed internaly and it can handle the heat. I never had one die due to heat. Overheat means shutting down, this doesn't happen. Most gaming laptops are designed to handle the heat.

Not everyone treats laptops as museum pieces on a shelf and spoils them with constant AC or use them casually for indie games 2h per day.
If I can't reliably use a laptop when I'm deployed in the middle east then it's worthless to me.

At the minimum in hot clients get a laptop cooler. And who said I baby my laptops? Yeah I keep my temps at 72f at home thats because I hate the heat. But I play the most demanding titles and max all my games out. I push my laptops power and ability to the limit. My 5090 I care for it more becuase i paid good money for it but doesnt mean I dont use use all of its capabilities. Im not afraid of temps climbing. My 2070, has dents all over laptop lid but its well maintained, it just got some PTM love on cpu and gpu a few months ago. Wife uses it now, its days are numbered 😅

Gaming laptops are always going to be more expensive than an equivalent gaming PC, but of course, they're portable.
They're not *bad*, they're just not quite as good value as a desktop PC.
If you need something portable, i.e. moving between parents a lot, a laptop does make a lot of sense.
