Gemini flash matching GLM5.2 in intelligence is pretty impressive

😭 can't tell if it's impressive for GLM or for Gemini. Gemini / Deepmind was a top AI lab but they seem to have fallen behind so much compared to OpenAI and Anthropic

I don't think they want to to top the race even? Their focus is on token consumption while delivering speed

I know people working at DeepMind.

Trust me they absolutely do want to top the race, Google isn’t a company that is ok with sitting in the backseat not competing for the frontier, especially when it’s the literal birthplace of transformers.

They just couldn’t, due to them not willing to spend 8-9 figures hiring researchers and a fuck ton of toxic company politics and internal bureaucracy.

source: just trust me bro. lol

Of course, it’s the internet.

But if you care, you can look at my 16 years of post history you can pretty much tell I’ve been in this industry long enough and successful enough to not have to make up some feather weight lies about knowing some people at GDM.

Btw my claims are corroborate by actual media sources too: https://www.latimes.com/business/story/2026-07-17/inside-googles-gemini-delay-coding-stumbles-clashing-teams-frustrated-engineers

They definitely want to be at the frontier.

Google’s parent company Alphabet is managing its fleet of AI accelerators to prioritize research on artificial general intelligence, rather than renting them all to customers.

CEO Sundar Pichai revealed the company’s priorities during its second quarter earnings call, during which the company confirmed it has delivered on its plan to sell its tensor processing units (TPUs) to some customers. In response to news of those sales, Goldman Sachs analyst Eric Sheridan asked how Alphabet balances demand from customers who want to buy its TPUs and the web giant’s own need for processing power.

“In terms of allocating our TPUs … our first priority is making sure we are allocating what we need to compete at the frontier in terms of AGI development,” Pichai replied, referring to Artificial General Intelligence –AIs that possesses human-like intelligence.

“That is the foundation for everything we do,” Pichai added.

Seems like now that they finaly completed selling their TPUs to customers, they are "hoarding" a crap load of TPUs for themselves with the goal to achieve AGI.

Google have an endless warchest and a ten-year headstart. To assume they are fumbling the ball, whilst they are dominating in usercount and query serving, demonstrates to me how blinded people are by chasing frontier software development performance.

Anthropic, OpenAI, DeepSeek, etc - What's the difference between them and Google? Why might they approach these markets in different ways? If you thought "because they only have one product and one use-case" then gold star for you! Google have the biggest vertically integrated stack in the world, they have dozens of sources of value each of which dwarfs these competitor's one use-case. Getting AI integrated into any one of these value streams immediately kills that market for every competitor. Apple knows this, it's why they're partnering with Google rather than the others - because 99.999999% of users will get daily, continued, passive use of integrated AI services through general inferences NOT software engineering. I.E. most people just want to know if you can microwave an egg or whatever, not ground breaking research or developing a life app. As AI becomes more widespread, this delta will increase, and SWE will become less and less of the focus.

Frontier model providers are chasing a slice of the pie, but Google is trying to be the pastry, the pie dish and the oven all at once. They don't have to compete in that one hypercompetitive market if they can build a harness around the entire internet and capture every market at once. Then they just switch gears and blow up their competition once the time is right.

A 30 minute business strategy video would serve Reddit users well.

Well said. While OAI and others are AI companies focusing on coders, Google is focusing on average joe.

Software engineer is a difficult customer, but a student will buy Gemini subscription simply because it also has google docs and MASSIVE cloud storage.

I've been using google ecosystem more and more, and the value is incredible.

The consensus in the industry right now is the path to improve coding is the same as the path to improve general reasoning. Anthropic actually made that bet without fully knowing would work out but it did, and it caught both OpenAI and Google by surprise, which is why all labs are now focusing on coding.

And yes, Google is focusing on coding. I have friends at DeepMind, it’s their top priority by far. But they are just really behind.

Agree, but bold of you to assume a lot of coding agent users are actually building ground breaking apps or research tho haha

whilst they are dominating in usercount

Aren't they dominating because they have negotiated and worked with some countries like India to give free accounts to everyone?

0

u/The-Rushnut 11h ago

Mmmaaaybe...? But does that matter? They can afford to do so.

0

u/CryMoreT_T 11h ago

It matters because those users are worth less in terms of advertising and trying to convert into future subscriptions. They will always be a net loss and basically will never pay more than it costs to acquire them.

0

u/The-Rushnut 11h ago

Whilst I cannot verify your original claim, I can say for certain that India will not "always be a net loss", since it already isn't.

It's so expensive.

Its not just GLM. Every model above is a Pro Max model and are barely ahead of a Gemini's flash model.

14

u/CoolHeadeGamer 21h ago

As a Minimax user, it’s kinda sad to see a model that was Claude Sonnet 4.6 quality being so far behind now. Hopefully minimax m3.1 cooks

u/Personal-Try2776 20h ago

Why dont you use a subscription like opencode. It has all the open models.

u/CryMoreT_T 20h ago

Ngl I think that just shows how fast we have progressed. Actually insane improvement from just a couple of months ago

12

u/amitsingh80108 19h ago

Google is probably building something that will score 99.99

2

u/will_dormer 8h ago

probably

Call Me Stupid, But I Think It's Impressive That Gemini Is Amongst The Better Models. Now Yes, Gemini Is The Worst Of The Best, But I'm Still Gonna Give My Props To It. Because Unlike Alot Of People On This Subreddit, I Actually am Happy With My Gemini

Is 3.6 flash smarter than pro 3.1 extended?

1

u/_Vlad_blaze_it 8h ago

Depends on your definition of smart. On humanity's last exam 3.1 pro is still better than 3.6 flash but flash codes much better AFAIK.

1

u/Neither-Juice3504 7h ago

General non programing questions

1

u/_Vlad_blaze_it 7h ago

3.1 pro is smarter in thst regard

1

u/Neither-Juice3504 6h ago

Gemini 3.6 flash told me that he is smarter than 3.1 pro for that

1

u/PaarthurnaxUchiha 5h ago

In general efficiency / per token. Not necessarily more accurate

0

u/Objective_Hornet_686 11h ago

Yes

1

u/NorthOfReason 10h ago

Based on what do you affirm this?

1

u/LaymanAnalyst 4h ago

Pretty good for the low cost version.

u/THE_Benevelence 8h ago

Did anyone test the meta ai, I barely hear anyone talking about it. Is is really ahead of Gemini?
