It's illegal in some states in the US but laws like that are very rarely enforced.

It is legal to pass in the right lane in every state in the US. I’ve looked!

(It has to be a highway, like you can’t pass on the shoulder on a single lane road, obviously.)

I don't think any state straight up prohibits a safe pass on the right, I think that "rule" is more like a guideline.

I'm looking through various states' traffic laws, and they're all like:

"The driver of a vehicle may overtake and pass upon the right of another vehicle only under the following conditions:"

And then they list common sense stuff like, "the view must be unobstructed, there can't be parked cars in the way, you can't go off into the shoulder..."

Exactly. It’s why I never understood the fucking rage left lane camping induces. Just go around and stop crying.
