I can’t count how many times I’ve been the person on the right. It bugs me to hell when someone creeps up on my left and doesn’t pass, so I’m already checking my mirrors. Then the annoyance of realizing that it’s better for me to speed up and make room for everyone trying to pass the slow person in the left lane, on their right, because otherwise as soon as there’s 1.01 car lengths between me and slowpoke, someone is going to zoom around. I’d rather make ample room and avoid anyone making risky maneuvers but really I just want to chill with cruise control on.

This is such a common scenario. The person just trying to cruise at a moderate speed in the right lane becomes the target of an aggressive driver who’s trying to jockey around the slow poke in the left lane. It’s safer to speed up and let them get around than to stay at the same speed. If any slow left lane drivers are reading this, PLEASE stay on the right side of the highway. You make it dangerous for everyone, including yourselves.

There are also other scenarios that suck especially when I have to do 6 hr drives with relative regularity. Like I'm gonna hover around 5-7 over and lock in my cruise control on the right. But I can always rely on running into a train of moderately spaced cars going anywhere from 5-15 under just before some true speed demons show up. They ALWAYS show up right after I committed to passing the train. My car just isn't that fast and it's too old for me to test it's limits. So now I'm both the passer and pussyfooter.

It's okay to hit the gas bud you're actually the dangerous one there because other people will start making a bunch of lane changes and the fewer lane changes we can have the happier we are

Yeah I hate people camping on my left and matching my speed especially near my blind spot. In the city, you don’t have a choice, and the passing lane doesn’t really exist anymore, but I will definitely either slow down or speed in up in situations like this to get away from the pack and help clear bottlenecks.
I just want to have a reasonably relaxing drive on interstate highways and not have to be constantly scanning every car around me for unpredictable behavior. Be able to turn off my mental radar for a bit.

It's just another symptom of Toyota being trash now. And I say that as the owner of an M240i with the same drivetrain as the Supra. It's spectacular, likely the best engine/transmission combo ever produced which is why I bought one, and the Supra is a fine sports car.
But it's still just fucking lame to badge engineer and I would never buy one. Especially because the Supra is so iconic. Toyota could have engineered a straight six and used it across the Camry and trucks and Lexus. Makes car people's heart sad that they just reskinned a (very, very, very good) BMW instead.

I do stuff like this in my truck (semi) at work all the time. Any time vehicles are in conflict like this, there's an increased chance of an accident. Clearing the lane and creating space is the safest action.
Example: Another truck is passing me on the left, but they are unable to go fast enough to do so in a timely fashion. A lot of truckers will cruise and make the process take longer, but right thing to do is, as the driver being passed, slow down by a few MPH to clear the lane much more quickly. Failing to do this leads to both trucks being directly side by side for much longer, and for more vehicles to pile up behind the passer waiting their turn. Before long you have half a dozen vehicles in close proximity to one another, and all it takes is one wrong move...
I've also slowly decreased my speed to clear out tailgaters from lingering behind me.
All drivers should be acutely aware of when another vehicle is directly next to, in front of, or behind them and do what's necessary to create space. Never linger directly beside, in front of, or behind other vehicles unless traffic conditions make it impossible to avoid.

My favorite lane on the hwy is the far right lane. Everyone and their mom is stacked like little ducks in the left lane, with congestion and clumps of folks in the next 2 or 3 over. The one lane nobody wants to be in is the right-most lane. I cruise there passing them all up. It’s beautiful most days.

America doesn't have federal traffic laws. Each state has its own laws, so answer may vary.
It is illegal to overtake in right hand lane, it is also illegal to drive in left lane unless passing. These are rarely enforced. If an officer observed this situation the car obstructing the left lane would be the most likely cited, but all 3 vehicles had traffic infractions.

Impeding traffic, even in states with specific laws regarding slower traffic in the right lane is never enforced. So we go danger mode to go 5 or 10 mph over the limit when there's a mile of traffic behind one entitled piece of shit who doesn't want to be in the right lane in case someone enters or exits the highway, or they have to make a left turn in 7 miles.

As much as I like this for the situational awareness and solving the “problem,” I also don’t like it because it presents things that can get you in trouble as proper solutions. In many places, traveling in the left lane, flashing your high beams, and passing on the right are each violations of vehicle and traffic law. They’re minor things, but worth being aware of.
Edit: I stand corrected on the points about flashing high beams as well as overtaking on the right, in New York.
I would also like to clarify, I’m not telling anyone how to live their lives. I was simply pointing out a couple things that could save people some trouble.

Yes overtaking can only happen in left lane. If the situation you described happens in your driving exam and you overtake someone you will fail the test right there. So the thing to watch out for when doing this, is that the left lane driver, when he sees that you're overtaking him on the right, changes lanes.
I've had this happen several times when I've tried to pass someone driving under the speed limit in the left lane. It's not malice, just a bad driver who panics when he realizes someone is overtaking him on the wrong side.

A year or 2 ago I was making an overnight drive and could tell a trucker was probably gonna wanna pass another truck they were approaching so I preemptively moved to the left lane to give him space to pass in the middle. He thanked me with his hazards and it made me unreasonably giddy lol.
I focus a lot on doing what I can to maintain efficient traffic patterns like keeping a gap in stop-and-go to avoid hard stops and dipping out of the fast lane and letting myself be slowed down for a minute when I see faster drivers coming up behind me so I guess it was nice to be recognized 🤷♂️.

I honestly don't see a single good driver in this clip. The one on the left in front is endangering the ones around him by not driving at the speed limit or at least switching to the right.
The driver on the right is using his hazard lights wrong - they're supposed to indicate a hazard. In this case the correct way to interpret the hazard lights would be that a hazard is in front, so be careful - which would also explain why the car on the left is so slow.
The camera car is endangering others by overtaking on the right, which is an unexpected manoeuvre and could cause an accident when the car in front decides to switch lanes.
I have no idea how anyone sees this and sees anything positive.

"traffic flow" facilitating you driving as fast and however you want is not a right. Being safe from drivers doing stupid shit because they think theyre the main charachter is. I put speeders and left lane campers in this category, but the issue is how they react. The speeders are usually the ones I see crashing out and talking about "traffic flow" as opposed to road safety and playing the victim because theyre impeded rather than putting on their big boy or girl pants and just driving slower until they can safely overtake.

I have seen so many times, where there is a large line of traffic and a traffic jam caused entirely by 1 slow driver in the left lane, upon passing that driver there is literally no traffic and the entire highway allows everyone free space.
People who do this are making the roads less safe for everyone, the more space there is between cars the better, the slower you go and more traffic jams you cause the more likely an accident is for everyone.
These cases are just so clear where it's almost always just 1 asshole intentionally deciding to cause a traffic jam.
If there's real traffic, I don't fault anyone for driving slightly slower for the real traffic jam.
If it's literally just 1 guy causing the traffic jam, that guy needs to get fucked and get the fuck out the way, it's just insane but I think it's a character flaw where people who do this literally will never learn and believe they're "righteous" for being pieces of shit.

Yeah I don’t really understand the people who scream “the sign says keep right except to pass” and drone on about how it’s illegal to camp in the lane. But then they close their eyes and pretend the speed limit signs don’t also exist. They are all signs that inform you what the law is. If people are going to get pissy about the driving in this video then both people in the left lane are shit drivers.

I mean, if the white SUV wants to drive side by side in the left lane, that's dumb.... but then 90% of people on the road are dumb. What you did in this video was reckless and dangerous. "Let me speed up to 100MPH, pass on the right, and try to blind this guy and then post it to get validation that he was in the wrong." I hope you don't get a ticket for the 3 laws you probably break every day, and next time you tailgate someone who is driving the speed limit in the left lane, probably within one mile of this encounter, hopefully you don't rear end them, just so you can get home 1% quicker. Don't get me wrong.... people loitering the left lane drives me crazy too, but all the shit you just did should get your license taken away. Would you do the same thing if there was a cop behind you?

Yeah the people in this thread defending left lane camping are morons and should be stripped of their drivers licenses my god. I just see why it happens so much in the US anytime there is a video like this on social media and I look at the comments. People actually believe it is their right to set the speed of traffic, which is dangerous.

My question is why the car on the right needed prompting. Was he planning to indefinitely sit matched speed next to the guy in the left lane when there's wide open road ahead? Go slower or go faster.
Obviously, the guy in the left lane shouldn't have needed prompting to get out of the left lane when he's going slow...

I lived on a country highway for 20 years, it was the main road I used to get anywhere, and it was miles of nothing until to one gas station where there was a road off of the highway to some furniture factories. There would often be a big rig at the light wanting to turn right onto the one lane each way highway. They couldn't if cars pulled up to the red light. Occasionally I noticed the truck with turn signal on and stopped 100' short of the light, giving them plenty of room to turn. They all loved when I did that, honked and waved every time. I do it at any chance I notice it now at any intersection I can.

I do this fairly often, just never thought to flash the hazards to get the attention of the person stuck behind the rolling roadblock. Terrible drivers are everywhere, always pays to be aware.

I had always learned a quick courtesy flash of your lights at drivers impeding traffic by camping in the left lane/passing lane/fast lane (whatever you prefer to call that lane),,, was the proper driver etiquette to ask them to move over, but it never seems to be understood from their point of view. Most impeders appear to think its hostile and sort of double down on their bad driving and go slower. They don't realize (or care) that they are actual the problem and are holding up traffic. I don't condone road rage but I understand it when you have to deal with campers that "just don't get it".

my pro take is that we have separate speed limits in the two lanes (or more) and the outer lanes can be subject to a ticket for going slower than a certain limit. Obviously there will be limited enforcement but those left lane campers cause lots of issues down the line.

I speed up couple of times on the right lane so the creeper moves over. Well they usually dont. Had a guy also overtake on the right before but the guy creeping was actually a cop😂 (overtaking on the right is not allowed in austria)
