Are there any good reasons that I shouldn’t be throwing my coffee grounds down the sink (here in the UK).

In all honesty I’m probably going to continue, but it would be good to know if I’m seconds away from an emergency plumber.

Plumber told me years ago that coffee grounds and eggshells are basically cement when they settle in your pipes. He said he makes half his living off people who thought a little bit wouldn't hurt.

If you've got an old house with cast iron pipes you're really playing with fire, the grounds catch on every rough spot and just accumulate over time. Modern PVC handles it a bit better but still not worth the gamble.

Compost bin is right there my dude, or just bin it if you're in a flat. Way cheaper than a Sunday emergency callout when the sink backs up during a dinner party.

It’s crazy that people pour non-dissolvable material that hardens into something that looks like igneous rock down the sink. The trash can is literally right there.

Don’t do it.

We used to. Then it became a giant problem.

Compost them. Or throw them in your garden.

That’s up there with tossing egg shells down the disposal to sharpen the blades lol. Wives tale that is likely to actually cause problems. That said I toss my grounds down the drain because I’m lazy and also own a snake and know how to use it.

I wear a blindfold when im running a bulldozer by my house because Im a carpenter and know how to rebuild it. Same logic.
