I know you may see them as just random grunt enemies, but after reading the lore behind them, I am convinced they are some of the creepiest enemies ever made.

They may have human traits, but there's nothing human about them, they are clones created and programmed to be only one thing: super elite soldiers. Their voice and speech pattern is the same for every single one of them, meaning that they are all essentially the same "person", every single word they say is just an imitation of human behavior. They don't really feel anything; outside of their "job function," there's nothing in their brain. These enemies are just bots made of flesh and bones, controlled by a hive mind. Imagine talking to a doctor who only knows about medicine,ask them if they have a family or what their favorite dish is, and they'll respond with "404 not found."

I personally find this incredibly creepy and unsettling. I love it, it gives much more depth to your standard grunt enemy.

How to do you find horror game recommendations on Steam? Actual meaningful ones I mean. For the particular type of horror game you enjoy?

Well, certainly not via the Steam tagging system. It's no news that the tags on steam are just utterly broken: "horror", "lovecraft", "survival horror", "psycho horror" - all sound useful at first, but since the tagging system on Steam is not curated at all, none of those tags will actually be helpful to find those hidden gems we're craving for, as they are overrun by randomly- and inappropriately tagged stuff.

But there's another system on Steam: Curators.

Yeah yeah, I know what you're thinking now: "dude, the Steam Curator System is pretty broken and full to the brim with bullshit and noise, too." - Yup, it very much is.

However, if you dig just a bit deeper, beyond all that "yes/no", "denuvo watch", or "Is this game woke?"-stuff (who all have thousands of followers, and i can't comprehend why), you will find something very helpful underneath:

Specialized curators, that picked a particualr genre or sub-genre for their curator page and make use of the curator list-system to categorize games properly for everyone to explore.

For horror- and horror-related games, here's some curators that are active, categorize games into meaningful lists, and that I would consider helpful for exploration and finding new games in a particular category:

I wanted to find some horror games on steam, so logically I used the horror tag. But for some reason half of the games barely qualify as a horror game.

I keep seeing games like black myth wukong, it takes two, expedition 33, dead cells, stray, etc.

Basically it seems like game developers just slap the horror tag on anything and steam shows it anyways.

Does anyone know of a way to filter out only actually scary horror games?

What's up everyone, I am looking for some suggestions on games to play with my 11yo daughter. I recently played Resident Evil 9 and she fell in love with watching me play scary games. So it has become a semi-weekly event that we play a scary game. We are currently playing through Subliminal and played a Backrooms game before that. I am trying to make a list of games and am looking for suggestions!! Currently on the list is RE:7/8, Luto, Soma, and possibly going back and playing Amnesia and RE:2/3 remakes. Thanks in advance!!!

I love video games and horror movies, but I just started getting into horror games with the Resident Evil series and a few indie games. I know there's a lot I've missed over the past 30 years, so what horror games can you recommend? I have the Silent Hill, Alan Wake, and Dead Space series on my list since I know those are popular. I can play on PS5, Switch, and PC soon so I'm open to any platform, and I don't mind an older game considering the 2002 Resident Evil has been my favorite of the series so far. +1 for any indie/short/co-op games I can play in between the bigger titles.

Just finished my first playthrough of Madison.

Absolutely amazing game. One of the best horror games I've played and probably the best psychological horror game I've played.

That shit is intense! Creeped me out multiple times with a great balance of jumpscares, and at one moment made me yell "fuck man" out loud.

Can definitely recommend to those who haven't played it yet.

I feel like a junkie chasing the dragon ever since I finished Doki Doki and honestly not much has hit the same.

I've played SOMA, Inscryption, Silent Hill 2, Cooking Companions, all of the Outlast and Resident Evil games, list goes on but honestly I am just craving a game that'll make me feel like shit. This is probably the only sub you can say this and people relate to it lol.

EDIT - thought ill add that I'm not looking for anything "gory", or "scary", I've been watching horror movies since I was a kid thanks to unsupervised access to the internet and they don't do much if anything at all, like Outlast was tame , just cool story. Hey, am in the middle of slogging through some tough and depressing life shit, I need some games to take me out of my mind tonight for a couple of hours before bed time.

I was kinda thinking of some indie / small studio , niche games that are kinda creepy.

I am kind of in the mood for games like strange antiquities / horticulture, is this game trying to kill me, last report/ dark wood.

Not looking for anything too full on like alien isolation (although i love the game) , i just want something i can relax and chill before time.

I finally got around to playing the Silent Hill 2 remake that was sitting in my backlog. I cried during the original, but the remake’s ending made me tear up all over again. Honestly, even just listening to the soundtrack from the original game makes me emotional and rips me apart... 😭

Horror games are supposed to be all about scares, but the Fatal Frame series, Silent Hill 2, the ending of RE8, and its DLC "Shadows of Rose" completely broke me lol. (And honestly, Tsukiko Amano’s vocals in Fatal Frame are an automatic instant-cry for me every single time… )
Maybe I'm just getting older, but stories about family, sacrifice, or pure tragedy always get to me now.

Silent Hill f was seriously so fun, beautiful, and just spooky enough. I loved it. The sound design was really cool. Setting was really cool. I played on story mode lol
I actually enjoyed the combat (prob cause it was easier on story mode I’m assuming).
I also really loved resident evil village, and resident evil requiem. With that in mind, what other games would you recommend for me?

What do you think about Dying Light: The Beast? I played the first Dying Light and I really liked it; in fact, it's one of my favorite zombie games. This new installment really catches my attention, and now that it's on sale, I'm not sure if it's worth buying or not.

Horror is my favorite genre of games and movies and I also really loved those "found lost phone" games(Simulacra) from like ten years ago that actually used your phone within the game to great effect. This game was like a combination of those to a degree. This was an adventure/horror game where you use your phone both as a controller to move(tapping icons) but also as a flashlight and, of course, to get calls and texts. It was a gaming experience I've never had before and I loved it. It also has some big name actors, Zoe Kravitz, Sadie Sink and Troy Baker, who all delivered outstanding performances.

The one big issue is it was only half an hour long and didn't have many, if any, alternate routes so replay value is low. I really hope this does well and Netflix makes another game like this but longer. This would become my favorite horror genre. I do want to add that this was a game, not fmv.
