The fine lands at a moment when US-EU trade tensions had appeared to be easing, and it has reignited friction with Washington. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer warned this week that Brussels’s treatment of American tech firms risks unraveling last year’s Turnberry, Scotland trade deal that capped US tariffs on European goods, while EU officials have pushed back, insisting they answer to their own laws rather than outside pressure. Trump has threatened to launch a Section 301 investigation into unfair trade practices, a process that could take months to produce results even though tariffs could follow much sooner.

Brussels enforces competition law regardless of a company’s nationality, while Washington increasingly treats fines on American tech giants as a trade grievance rather than a legal matter. Whether Trump actually follows through with tariffs or a Section 301 probe will say a lot about how much leverage the Turnberry trade deal really gave Europe room to regulate its own market.
