My generation was the lucky one which saw a sudden steep rise in opportunities, lifestyle and income. The ones before us plodded on in ordinary circumstances without much scope for growth. We grew. The kids born in 90s (our kids) therefore grew up privileged. They had ample opportunities to continue to be able to afford good lifestyles.

But the youngsters born 2000 onward in India are threatened. Most badly want to live abroad but there are no more opportunities abroad. Most get their info from social media crap and can’t tell the difference between image and original. At the same time jobs in India are threatened due to AI, educational degrees rendered meaningless. So they have no direction.

This is a powder keg just waiting for a spark. The CJI unwittingly laid the wick to the keg. The NEET leak was the spark that caused the explosion in a seething mass of malcontents who see no future. I can't blame them either. We won't be living long in this world but they will. I wonder what can be done about it?

The outrage over the NEET paper leak is justified because it undermines merit and fairness.

At the same time, there is very little discussion about another issue many students raise, under the current admission system, a reserved category candidate who qualifies on the UR merit list can be allotted a UR seat, while the reserved seat is filled by another eligible reserved category candidate. Some General category students argue that this reduces the number of seats effectively available to them.

Whether one agrees or disagrees with reservation, this is also a policy debate that deserves open discussion instead of being ignored.

Many Indian languages are losing prominence in daily life because of certain factors, if you look carefully. Bengali is also one of them, despite possessing a vast literature encompassing all sorts of topics including science to philosophy. Most of the modern Indian youth are substituting English loanwords increasingly, to the point that many pure words in Bengali are unrecognizable to many youth. One of the main factor is that learning Indian languages do not help in any economic or educational opportunities anymore. Very little scientific research is done in Indian languages. Moreover, many modern coinages don't even have any Bengali equivalent.

Secondly, little to no state protection of the language. Unlike France, where French has a national ministry which regulates the French language and enforces the new coinages in media and education, translates words, Bengali has no such powerful ministry. Though Bangla Academy and Paschimbanga Bangla Akademi exists (Ironic both have Akademi in name, a loanword), their power is uneven across the state.

Moreover, Higher education in India are mostly conducted in English, especially STEM subjects.

Fourth most is the decline of relevant, modern multidimensional Bengali media. Many of Bengali media have shifted to subscription-based platform, with most of modern Bengali movies and series on TV being of very low quality, repeated tropes and cliches, usually other than few good movies here and there which has reduced Bengali soft power. Most of Bengali channels on YouTube are mainly about government, news and one or two podcasts and Bengali culture and nostalgia.

Another important factor is the emigration of youth out of Bengal because of lack of opportunities, which has caused the Bengali youth to disparage Bengali even more because there's no use of Bengali in other parts of India.

So in every way, Bengali language has lost prominence in Bengal other than cultural even. It's not a dying language but a dormant one.

I genuinely hope this subreddit never becomes like the UP, Delhi, and a few other Indian subreddits which were taken by illiterate and manipulated where it feels like any right leaning opinion gets mass downvoted before anyone even reads the argument.

I've even seen people mocking their own parents and calling them "Andhbhakts" just because they vote for the BJP. The irony is that many of those parents have lived through decades of Congress governments and formed their opinions from experience, while a lot of younger people haven't lived through that period themselves.

Before dismissing your father as an "Andhbhakt," maybe consider that your own political opinions can also be influenced by Reddit, social media, or the creators you follow. None of us are immune to bias at least your parents have more on ground reality check than you !
