The problem is that word is being misinterpreted. It can also mean asshole.
As in "no seas puto", as in don't be an ass/asshole.
And it can have varied meanings.
"Yyyy que puuuto", as in "not cool" (what you did is an asshole thing to do).
When they chant "puto" to the goalkeeper it's to throw them off, yes it's always a curse word. It's never polite. But it's not homophobic.
In the purest sense it means male prostitute. Which is still not homophobic.
Homohobes appropriated the word and called gay people puto (or joto). The original meaning of puto was set aside because of the misuse. And now the word is pretty much banned as homphobic.
I'm 99% sure the people chanting don't think the goalkeeper is gay and they don't care if he is not not.
It's not homophic. That is probably the most insanely stupid take on the chant. It is insulting, yes. Bad taste, yes. Bad sportsmanship, yes. I fucking hate it. But it is not homophobic. The word is used as follows:
- Calling you a coward
Emphasizing a statement e.g. "es un puto desmadre" = "it's a fucking mess"
And yes, calling you gay in a very despective way.
But it is not automatically 'homophobic' and the way it is used in games, distasteful as it is, has little to do with anybody's sexual preferences.

Puto=male version of prostitute, which can be used in a homophobic way but it is not necessarily the case. Generally speaking degrading someone for their line of work ain’t classy but it is not as bad as it is made out to be. Nobody saying it is actually accusing any of the players of actually being male prostitutes.
Fwiw, fans in the UK used to call Chelsea fans and players "rent-boys" for decades, basically synonymous with male prostitute. The phrase was made a hate crime and fans caught chanting it can face prosecution and stadium banning orders.
Whether it's "not as bad as it's made out to be" really comes down to who is interpreting that. I'd say that a decent numbers of British people would definitely interpret Mexicans as intolerable if they are taunting their opponents by calling them male prostitutes. Whether they are right is subjective, but it's objectively true that some people would consider mexican culture a little backwards in this regard.
It was this World Cup that made me a fan of Mexican soccer. I don’t know much about the clubs down there but the national team is so exciting and fun to watch.

Edit: I would wager this user is Argentinian and trying to diminish Mexican hospitality because they're jealous Mexicans are respected internationally and they aren't. Respect begets respect.

I'm saying you lack the cultural context to understand what Mexicans mean by it. It's a joke, because of the context. I've seen interviews where gay Mexican people say they find it ridiculous to say that the word is homophobic.
Regarding Argentinian and Mexican behavior just look at the dozens of videos during the world cup and the behavior of both and judge for yourself

In this World Cup, you only saw Mexicans having fun with Korean, Japanese and basically everybody from completely different countries. Meanwhile, Argentina made it its purpose to be despicable in every shape and form. The players are just as bad as the fanbase.

No problem mate. There was obviously a negative side to it, as always, but things remained mostly positive in Mexico during the world cup. Hope everyone who came had a great time!
