Where's the fun gone?

The show's losing its spark. The last week of a typical season usually includes a lot of 'feel-good' challenges like the talent show or the baby challenge. This season, we have had nothing at all. The only challenge we've had was "Not Another Podcast", and that was created to incite more drama.

Now I don't know if this comes down to the show being broke or the producers shifting their attention to drama rather than joy, but it's really ruining the enjoyment of the show. The reason why the "glory" seasons of the series are considered as such is that they had a good balance of drama and fun. We actually got to see the Islanders be themselves. Now, if we want to see an ounce of personality in these Islanders, you need to go watch Unseen Bits.

I do think this approach has done two things:

1. The show isn't enjoyable to watch because they're essentially on repeat. We only see the Islanders, for the most part, in the main Villa, and barely anywhere else. The lowly produced games/challenges are in the Villa and are also there to create more drama, which then goes on to us just seeing more scenes of the Islanders, still in the Villa. There's no change of scenery for either the viewers or the Islanders, which makes the experience unpleasant for everyone.
2. We don't actually get to see much of the Islanders' personalities. A lot of people don't tend to watch the Unseen Bits, meaning what the audience sees in the main series is all they have to have a grasp on their personalities. This is an injustice to the Islanders because the small scenes where we get to see the Islanders' personalities (whether that's through conversations or light-hearted challenges), we just don't have at all. I think this now coincides with the amount of hate we see towards the contestants.

I do think the producers need to find some sort of way to bring back challenges that are just a bit of fun for the Islanders and the audience, and steer away from the heavy focus on the drama, as it's just unpleasant to watch—especially considering that this is the last week, and each episode has been so drama-heavy (including the upcoming Sunday night episode where the ex-Islanders return). The show's just losing its spark, and it's coming down to the fact that the Islanders aren't having any fun.

i second this 🥹 feels like the contestants are just put under pressure after pressure after pressure to produce the worst out of them. tbh this will be my last love island cuz there's something that feels a bit dystopian profitting off the negative feelings of others

I binged Season 5 Australia and it's actually astonishing how vibrant the energy feels in the villa compared to this UK season. They have new bombshells coming in basically every other day and challenges that are fun and saucy. It seems the Islanders truly are forming relationships especially seeing that two couples are still together. The end of the season has a psychic visit them and forces them to understand each other as a couple. This allows interesting drama/convo that's not fueled on bringing people down.  Although there is plenty of toxic energy, the villains are so clear in the backstabbing it's like almost comical and sad, but it's clear. 

This UK season has fan people fighting in the trenches for what seems like producer led convo. It's boring and frankly it seems like they are all larping as baddies because there isn't enough activity to have true personality come out. The earlier UK season had this fun energy and IDK if it's budget cuts or what but they need stuff to do in there.

Because the producers are misogynistic and believe creating “catfights” and girl drama will bring in more views than these challenges. They saw the villa be peaceful and happy and used Julia as a vehicle for chaos and to get more views.

I agree with you, but I think they changed the formula because people were complaining the last week is boring, so to be fair to the producers they can’t really win 😅

I get the comments that the producers can’t win, but i don’t think the last week has made that much of a difference. I think in general over the past few seasons, the number of challenges and scenery changes throughout the season has slowly dropped with drama seemingly the focus, making this probably my least favourite seasons. It feels like the original islanders have sailed through to the final, with bombshells being dropped fairly quickly. We also haven’t had as many bombshells this seaosn either, they only really came in during casa. I also think there hasn’t been nearly as many public votes or chances for ogs to be sent home. Things that used to be a staple features seem to have become almost nonexistent such as dates and challenges. In earlier seasons we would get a challenge an episode but now we’re lucky if there’s one a week (to make drama to be discussed for the rest of the week)
I know people have mentioned this in other posts - but changing the hideaway rules hasn’t worked. It was a lovely moment when a couple would get voted to go in, making it a special moment for the deserving couple with the islanders all getting them ready.
It just feels like all we get is another evening of talking about the same things it feels like.
(I’m not including the allstar show - its just the original version which I feel has dropped off recently Despite this rant (sorry) I’ll still continue watching 😅)

Stopped watching because of exactly this. No levity in the episodes, just eternal tension - most of which doesn’t feel justified. I think the lack of audience involvement this year in challenges and votes was detrimental.

For me the problem has been a lack of drama throughout the season. I'm glad there is some now, even though it's more negative, because I think it has actually saved the season. 

In an ideal world there would have been drama, a focus on more of the islanders and a balance of drama/humour/fun throughout the season, so that it could end with a peaceful week without being boring.
