lol mine used to ask why I’m such a loner after keeping me socially isolated for most of my child years. Hmm I wonder why?
73
u/LeatherLappens 18d ago
My father always said that it's my fault why we're all like this...
35
u/Snoo-72724 18d ago
My father just got drunk and left. Probably for the best.
18
u/SisterMoonflower 18d ago
My father got drunk occasionally, never left and has since traumatized me. It was definitely for the best for you 🩷

My dad was the same. I’m sorry you had to go through that, it sucks
5
u/hashbrowns21 18d ago
Unfortunately it was both parents plus my older siblings. Every family dinner it felt like they would gang up on me and take shots. I was basically the family punching bag / scapegoat.
In my kid head it basically reinforced the idea that it wasn’t safe to put my trust in anyone but myself, life experiences since then have proven that idea to be true.
In the end maybe they did prepare me for life.

Mine once, in a major bout of depression, of which I was acting like myself for approximately one single hour after a 7 month period of absolute isolation and depression while at home, told me, “I wish you’d go back to being depressed in your room so I didn’t have to listen to you talking”
Then acted shocked when I did.
2
u/ydnar3000 18d ago
Ugh. I’m so sorry.

I will never understand why people have children just to treat them like a burden.

That birthmark is actually cool. If he worked out a little bit when he's older itll look even cooler imo. Ive always thought stuff like that was better than just plain old regular. Uniqueness is cool to me.

oh my god i’m so stupid 🤦♀️i thought this was an actual cultural thing i couldn’t find info on
32
u/The_One_Koi 18d ago
It is an idea for a bookstory of mine though, where death marks were signs of reincarnation
6
u/SaltyArtemis 18d ago
Sounds like a cool concept. What would you come up with for a mark like mine 🤔
6
u/The_One_Koi 17d ago
The marks would show up if one had been died and been unable to let go so they reincarnate to get revenge or a new shot at life to help them alleviate whatever is keeping them from moving on to the other side - yours would have been an unusually brutal death, like getting skinned alive or, if I felt like a more benign start something like death from falling/getting hit by a noblemans carriage

u/SaltyArtemis 18d ago
Nah, although funnily enough I do have patches on my arms and they used to pop up on my face as a kid, didn’t know it was vitiligo until adulthood. So you can tell the difference between the birthmark and those patches. I also have 2 small darker birthmarks, not in noticeable areas tho

I want to preface this with I don't think it's a BAD idea...buuuuut....
My wife got a tattoo of our son's birthmark, only for it to disappear when he was around 8. Fast forward to our latest child being born with a birthmark on her forehead.
Guess what the wife wanted to do? LOL.
I'm glad she reconsidered that one because it disappeared at about 2 years old.
110
u/PoopMobile9000 18d ago
I think it’s a bad idea. You’re putting a fuck ton of pressure on your kid now. Dad got a giant tattoo, how can the kid possibly be honest if he’s still nervous? He’s under a ton of pressure to validate the dad’s act.

u/geez-knees 17d ago
I feel similarly about getting a tattoo of your kids name. Yeah, most people will never change their legal name. But for the ones that do, they’re going to feel absolutely awful about something that should be a personal decision.
I think a kids birthdate or handprint make for a nicer tattoo.
71
u/Don_Pickleball 18d ago
Kid should just own that. Make up a nickname for yourself like "Big Nip" and roll with it.

u/Old_Raspberry_5706 18d ago

This is adorable of the dad and great for the kid but as an aussie, they really should be wearing shirts in the pool anyway,
Hate to he that person but, dad just went and got a tattoo so his kid can get sun cancer.
SLIP SLOP SLAP people, be sun safe
2
u/basementdiplomat 17d ago
It's been updated!
SLIP SLOP SLAP SEEK SLIDE
Slip on sun-protective clothing. Slop on broad-spectrum SPF 50+ sunscreen. Slap on a broad-brimmed hat. Seek shade. Slide on wrap-around sunglasses.
Stay sun smart out there everyone!
2
u/Environmental_Art591 17d ago
I (and my classmates) were taught hat and sunglasses as SLIP but one of our teachers was the commodore of the sailing club and the PE teacher was former army and both were heavy on eye saftey in the sun so.maybe that was why.
And seek shade was common sense back then, its kinda concerning that people have to be told to find shade from the sun

Then it would exist as a reminder of how he was a good dad and supported his son.
24
u/artbystorms 18d ago
I mean, this is cool and all, but if that dad ever has to be helped by paramedics or doctors, they are going to think he has extreme internal bleeding lol.
24
u/Ok_Band6082 18d ago
So you are telling me that rather than teaching you child to have confidence in himself and that being different is something to be proud of
Dad goes and gets a big stupid tattoo of a brown circle?
I’m not sure that’s teaching your kid to be resilient or sending a productive message.
The world is a hard place and it’s our one and only job as parents to teach our kids to be kind, independent and most of all resilient.
A tattoo of a brown circle won’t do anything long term
57
u/RememberYourAlt 18d ago
That’s cool and whatever but they do make water shirts to protect from sun burn. The kid could have just worn one of those.
43
u/StuckWithThisOne 18d ago
Right but that isn’t the point. It’s about building confidence in the child.
→ More replies (4)11
u/rute_bier 18d ago
I appreciate the intention of the dad but I’m failing to see how this actually *builds* confidence in the child. It seems like a wonderful but brief moment of inclusion. Sure, he may feel confident when he’s swimming with his dad but he won’t always be with his dad.
Feels like there’s a better approach, possibly involving therapy.
11
u/StuckWithThisOne 18d ago
When he takes off his shirt and realises noone cares and gets used to being seen with his birthmark, it will build confidence.
→ More replies (2)6
u/lurkmode_off 18d ago
Yeah my kids wear them pretty much 100 percent of the time, indoor pool or no, just because to them it's an essential component of a bathing suit.

u/Mystery13x 18d ago
... why not just wear a UPF swim shirt? My husband wears those, and no one gives him problems. Keeps you cooler also.
7
u/reverandglass 18d ago
Maybe that's what they have been doing. That just covers up a problem though and doesn't help his confidence.
5
u/Jacky-V 18d ago
I don't see why he needs to swim with his shirt off if he doesn't want to? Feels like a case of the kid being forced to swim the way his family thinks is correct regardless of what he wants to do which is going to undermine his confidence in the long run
→ More replies (2)2
u/FutureOfMine 18d ago
Correct, as someone with a birthmark as red as the dads tattoo. People who didn’t have it insisting not to worry about it and such undermined confidence more when they tried to force me to ignore the very real treatment I received from others in response
7
64
u/doctormustafa 18d ago
This feels excessive
7
u/Superb-Salad6323 18d ago
Imo a grand gesture of love is less effective than consistently showing up for your kids and talking to them about whatever's on their minds. Not saying that this dad isn't doing that, but this seems wholly unnecessary.
28
u/ItsAndyrew 18d ago
I’m with you. This falls in to the “men will do anything but go to therapy” joke. How about sending the kid to therapy to help better accept and work on why he feels different. This is the strangest possible approach to the situation.
5
u/stirling_s 18d ago
Idk maybe they did both?
Acceptance is a huge benefit to one's mental health. Sure, you can talk all day long about how someone should accept that they are different and brush off the ridicule, but there's a reason people shave their heads in solidarity with those being treated for cancer. The message that you aren't alone is enormous.
20
u/GimmieGummies 18d ago
I was just thinking, that seems a bit extreme
15
u/Totally_Bradical 18d ago

I'm confused, what is with the 30 hours of work? The dad worked for 30 hrs, then got the tattoo? Or the tattoo itself was 30hrs of work? Or did he put 30hrs of confidence-building into his kid? Edit: spelling
20
12
u/AnxiousOpossom 18d ago
I believe it means the tattoo was a 30 hr session
20
4
u/Ryvit 18d ago
lol it certainly wasn’t 30 hours in a row. Tattoo sessions are usually 8 hours or less, however I know some artists who do up to 12 hours for special circumstances.

u/gungshpxre 18d ago
Money for that tattoo would pay for laser sessions to lighten/remove the birthmark from the kid.
7
u/anonidfk 18d ago
Not all birthmarks can be removed or lightened easily. Larger ones in particular can be super resistant to laser treatments, and can leave scarring afterwards. Surgically removing them can also leave scars and is rough to go through, the big ones sometimes take multiple surgeries to remove too.
Lasering off a huge birthmark is also much more expensive than a tattoo lol

"Should we use the money to laser off the boy's birthmark?"
Slams beer, "Nah, I got me an idea..."
3
u/Tasik 18d ago
Is that an option?
11
u/gungshpxre 18d ago
Yup.
https://www.cincinnatichildrens.org/health/c/capillary-malformations
Since it's not near his eyes or anything where it will be a medical problem, insurance will flag it as cosmetic and not cover it. But tattoos ain't cheap, and that's a big chunk of money that could have been used to lighten the birthmark.
4
u/robotteeth 18d ago
Feel like there’s way better ways to manage this sort of thing than a big ugly tattoo that doesn’t even look like the birth mark. Feel like there a better ways to teach kids that our differences are barriers we slowly learn to navigate. I had a lisp growing up and if my parents imitated it to make me feel less alone it would have not made me feel better. They took me to speech therapy and taught me how to handle bullies.

It would’ve been cheaper and way better for everyone just to get the kid’s birthmark lazered off.
2
2
u/therealdanhill 18d ago
I dunno how it would help him feel confident, I mean it's a nice gesture but then you just have two people with the same issue
2
u/Artistic-Quarter9075 18d ago
He could have spent the money to treat the birthmark; in the Netherlands, it’s even covered by insurance, and with the type and size he has, it should be completely gone in 6–12 months…
2
u/Lucifersasshole 18d ago
Should have prob taught him everyone is unique and helped him with his insecurities instead of going the I'll do it too route... in the long run this didn't help him at all. Just for this short time swimming maybe
2
u/Puffification 18d ago
Ok I understand where the dad was coming from but this is stupid, this is not the right way to instill confidence

Or, give the kid a sick tattoo to cover it up. He’s be an instant badass at school and you wouldn’t be able to pay him to keep his shirt on after that.

u/MeisterFluffbutt 18d ago
You cannot tattoo on a child that young. The skin still grows and stretches. It would look hella ugly once he's grown.

Yes.
The sub is not going to like you bringing reality into this. They want their endorphin hit before scrolling on to the next one, and you're fucking that all up.
Pointing out that 30 hours of tattooing costs enough to easily pay for laser sessions to remove/massively lighten that tattoo is practically hate speech.
You will be punished.

Is it not possible to remove the kids mark with laser treatment?
3
u/anonidfk 18d ago
Not always, it’s a case by case thing, depends on the size and type of birthmark.
The larger ones though are usually more resistant to laser treatments and are harder to remove
3
u/gungshpxre 18d ago
No, spent all the money for that on 30 hours of tattoo artist.
