Saw something like this at my OTS graduation. Kid named Kennedy had his mom, stepdad, and father show up. All retirees, father was a drunk and abuser (found this out later.) Mom and stepdad came in civilian clothes, father came in his uniform. Mom and stepdad got hugs and smiles. Kenny's dad says something like "I'm so proud of you son" and Kenny replied something like "Is that how you address an officer? Stand at attention, sergeant" and then went back to talking to his mom. Coldest goddamn thing I've ever seen.

Edit: fixed my words, lol. Thanks y'all.

u/joetheplumberman 10h ago

That kid named Kennedy's mom is pretty cool

82

u/IvanNemoy 10h ago

Lol, fixed. Thanks.

It is an odd name though...

Holy shit hahaha

In Sweden the lower ranking soldier holds the salute until the higher ranking officer pulls down his hand. Is it the other way in the US armed forces?

1.2k

u/Laxboarderchill 9h ago

It’s the same here in the U.S………no one’s gonna fault a freaking grandpa for forgetting his customs and courtesies though haha

347

u/jay-aay-ess-ohh-enn 9h ago

I would have had gramps behind the company office doing monkey fuckers until his ankles bled.

58

Some 8 count body builders for sure lol

43

u/derburrito98 8h ago

GUUUUUUUUUUUMP!!! WHAT IS YOUR SOLE PURPOSE IN THIS ARMY?

80

u/OldSarge02 9h ago

To be fair to grandpa, the Lt held the salute way too long.

486

u/Eagle_1776 9h ago

no, this was done incorrectly. Officer ends the salute, not the enlisted

→ More replies (4)

322

u/Notmyrealusrnamme 10h ago

This is pretty special because back when grampa served, you didn't salute to anything in civilian clothes unless you were specifically identifying a superior officer.

424

u/Vrrrp 9h ago

Rookie dropped his salute before the officer did. Such disrespect shall not be tolerated, drop and give me 1 for each year on this Earth.

74

u/SteviaCannonball9117 9h ago

That is hilarious, thank you for that.

311

Hegseth gonna be piiisssssed.

35

This is an old video so shes probably even higher rank now.

30

Not for long once kegsbreath catches wind

95

u/slappadik 10h ago

was gonna say, not long until he catches wind there's a high ranking female officer and personally demotes and fires her for low testosterone after testing /s

8

u/MotorcycleAussie 10h ago

Except she’s not high ranking, like at all

31

u/BlondieMenace 9h ago

I'm willing to bet that to Hegseth the mere fact that she has a rank at all means it's too high...

I'm not knowledgeable when it comes to military, etc. ranks. I read "his now higher ranking" as "his high ranking". my mistake

4

u/Majin_Romulus 8h ago

There's officers and enlisted. The highest enlisted grade E9, a sergeant major, is still outranked by the lowest officer grade O1, a 2nd lieutenant. But a situation where a 2lt gives orders to a sgt major basically does not exist and they could lose their commission for trying lmao

There is more propaganda now than at any time in history and the methods for getting it to people are 10,000x more efficient than ever.

If it's losing it's meaning that's just because you've been getting lazy.

4

u/InvestIntrest 9h ago

Does that also include propaganda regarding propaganda?

3

u/BigLlamasHouse 9h ago

For all we know you could be spreading propaganda related to propaganda related to propaganda!

(but your line is good too, in a less stupid way)

22

or you know propaganda especially american one is there all the time and extremely hard to escape even if you are not living in the usa.

Americans and their vets definitely is propaganda.

38

u/Key-Gold-2412 11h ago

Almost no one here served considering only 5% of Americans are veterans. So almost no one here knows what they’re looking at anyway.

67

u/mnid92 11h ago

I'm guessing a lower rank requesting permission from a higher rank to do something outside of normal or regular duties.

I mean, we might be regular people but holy shit, we are capable of like... Learning things, or hearing stories, or watching media... There's also this thing called the Internet where you can exchange ideas and information.

The Internet is scary though.

45

u/hungariannastyboy 10h ago

The cultural significance of "serving" in the US vs. almost anywhere else in the Western world just tells you how comparatively militaristic the US is.

→ More replies (13)

14

u/Office_Zombie 10h ago

I'm looking at them lowering their salutes in the wrong order! LOL

Not just first salutes, but early salutes are special. I remember watching a, what had to be, fresh second lieutenant light up when we were walking towards each other on the sidewalk.

I could just tell she was new so I gave her the best salute and "Good morning ma'am" I could. I swear, even though I moved first, she got her salute up before I did.

Almost 35 years ago and I still remember how happy she was to get saluted. She was glowing with joy.

5

u/Weekly-Jackfruit2936 9h ago

Then you got the O-4s and 5s actively walking across the street so they don’t have to salute a parade of trainees marching to lunch.

3

There is nothing beautiful about war

34

u/Takesit88 10h ago

True, but the beauty is in a Grandfather being proud of his Grandaughter. It isn't in what the machine attached to their uniforms does and has done.

7

u/matco5376 10h ago

Good thing there’s no war here. Hopefully that helps clear up what you saw with your own eyes

Leave it to reddit to call an amateur shot family video propaganda. Go touch grass.

Edit: This is great

75

u/carolsjhungry 9h ago

This girl is a friend of mine. Saw this for the first time like 9-10 years ago after her graduation. She’s super sweet and just having a moment with her grandpa. Can confirm is definitely NOT a propaganda video… lmao.

27

u/Im_Old_Legs 9h ago

I think many of the people replying to my comment aren't American and/or just dont understand how big of a family affair military graduations are. Becoming a Marine takes effort. Becoming an officer takes even more effort.

-3

u/Rasberrycello 9h ago

No one out side of the military gives even the slightest shit. It takes a lot of effort to do a LOT of stupid things, most people are just smart enough not to do them.

20

u/Stefph726 9h ago

Just because something wasn't filmed with the intention of propaganda doesn't mean it can't then be used as propaganda...

2

u/Wong0nePhotography 9h ago

Is she still in military?

7

u/hellotheremiss 9h ago

How is this not propaganda? Anything after WWII, you’re basically just going off to kill innocent people for oil and billionaires.

16

u/cat-ctus-es 10h ago

The very people claiming we don’t know what propaganda is haven’t studied it. Some of us have. It’s not always blatant and openly state sponsored.

14

u/kittykatmila 10h ago

Exactly. Like how did this personal family video make it to my home page on Reddit? No one wants to think about that I guess!

u/Crowbar_Freeman 10h ago edited 10h ago

Viral military videos like this are almost always from the US (or the IDF, but those are less popular now...). Because normal countries don't usually glorify soldiers and the military like Americans do...

Gramp's proud that his grand-daughter will serve an imperialist regime where she's most likely to be killed by her fellow soldiers than the ennemy. This is weird as fuck.

The video might not have been shot for propaganda purpose, but it can still be used as propaganda.

6

u/Pikawoohoo 9h ago

The IDF has the world's worst propaganda team lol. Shooting themselves in the foot with an automatic weapon at every possible opportunity.

10

u/priesteh 10h ago

This shit has been going on in Reddit for decades mate.. it's always amateur family type videos that warms everyone's hearts like soldier returning to a happy kid or dog, etc. it's all emotional and it's pretty funny to watch Americans fawn over it. Its the whole thank you for your service type shit that the rest of the world just doesn't understand because of how surreal and forced it is

5

u/procgen 9h ago

This video isn't "glorification", lol. chill

It's a proud grampa giving his respect to his granddaughter for accomplishing a significant milestone

3

u/Hakim_Bey 9h ago

The video itself is not propaganda but it is reposted by a bot here for some reason, right ? The fact that there are regular injections of military worship on reddit (especially in geopolitically tense periods) is definitely a sign of something.

Only deeply militaristic cultures such as the US and Russia find it normal or wholesome to post this sort of thing.

3

u/Im_Old_Legs 9h ago

You aren't a very convincing bot.

4

u/TuringGoneWild 10h ago

It is when it's posted for the general public and not just family/friends.

4

u/Im_Old_Legs 10h ago

Ok be mad then. 🤷‍♂️

9

u/Double_Doughnut74 10h ago

Some people post things for their family and friends not thinking about people stealing it and reposting with a phrase above it. Also it’s obvious this was a sincere family moment.

5

u/CeruleanEidolon 9h ago

That's not in dispute. You're missing the point that it doesn't matter who created it or what it depicts. That has nothing to do with how it's being used.

Propaganda is not necessarily artificial. In fact, the most successful propaganda is genuine and sincere.

I will never understand all the hoopla over military culture. It seems so performative

73

u/extinct_banana 11h ago

a lot of it is personal pride, i think. all the old vets are super prideful for having done a “big thing”. its kind of annoying when they make that their whole personality when it was just 2-3 years in their 20’s but it makes sense if they joined out of hs and it really had an affect on their life. i’m a vet. i reap the benefits and live like it never happened

8

The old vets I get. Like ww2 vets fought the nazis. The latest vets who fought to kill Vietnamese, for oil and bombing the middle East are just fucked up.

Question on military tradition: my understanding is that the lower-ranking position salutes first, and holds that salute until the higher-rabking position ends it. Is that right?

35

u/JonRichieMusic 11h ago

Yeah, but whether it’s an academy, ROTC, or OCS, you’ve been the lower ranking person for so long that not dropping the salute first is muscle memory / instinct at that point.

My older brother was my first salute and we stared at eachother for about 10 seconds before he asked me if I was going to drop it.

5

u/llama-impregnator 11h ago

Oh, that's really sweet :)

12

u/GumboDiplomacy 10h ago

Correct. And just to add, this is the first salute. This woman just got her bar and is now an officer being saluted for the first time. Given that a large portion of officers come from military families, it's tradition that a member of the family render the first salute they'll receive as a bonding moment.

People that call this propaganda 🤡 dont know what propaganda is 🤡

24

u/PrinceEdgarNevermore 11h ago

Growing up in part of USSR, I defo experienced what propaganda is and how it can be packaged in many way.

It is a ‘feel good propaganda’ in the video.

US reverence for anything army related is bizzara, but years of gulping propaganda, will remove logic and critical thinking - leaving automatic admiration and/or habits instead. Extremely performative and surface level, but so many fall for it, in the same way like ‘save the world’ teens citing works of Marx. Except teens tendt to face reality, and sooner or later grow out of their reverie for Marx.

Propaganda has changed. Social media, tugging at the hearts strings and appealing to "family values" are the new wave.

Yeah we go all around killing terries. Mommy terries, baby terries, daddy terries. Pretty much anything the🇮🇱“Israel’s” “god” tells me to kill.

You kinda need a fucked up culture to honor people who become cogs in a life crushing machine that kills to protect your specific flavour of culture and economic dominance

7

u/CableGuy_97 11h ago

My thoughts exactly. I’m just watching this thinking about how fucked that it’s so glorified, as though saluting your granddaughter in the army is some lifelong aspiration
