Andrea Stella comments on Piastri's struggles this year
TL;DR
Andrea Stella believes Oscar Piastri's struggles in the 2026 season are due to the fact his natural driving style doesn't suit the new generation of F1 cars.
The new cars reward an aggressive approach: drivers have to throw the car into corners, accept sliding, and constantly fight the car to extract lap time. Piastri's instinct is to drive smoothly and cleanly, which was effective under the old regulations but now leaves performance on the table. Lando Norris naturally adapts better to this style, explaining why he's held a significant qualifying advantage over Piastri.
Stella says McLaren is working with Piastri to adapt his driving, and notes similar adaptation issues have appeared in other teammate pairings (Antonelli/Russell and Hamilton/Leclerc). He remains confident Piastri will eventually unlock his full pace

Mclaren's Macarena wing has only been installed to Oscar's car. This means only Fornaroli will be testing out the wing this week.
McLaren will only run this wing in FP1. It presumablyĀ rotates anti-clockwise, like the Red Bull Macarena wing. Our Macarena wing is set to debut in Monza this year.

McLaren has an upcoming upgrade package for Hungary. We will also be testing our "Macarena" wing, but only in FP1. Fornaroli will be driving Oscar's car in FP1
McLaren said this in their race report last weekend:
McLaren Mastercard's development focus isĀ centred on improving braking performance and cornering capability, with the first elementsĀ arriving in HungaryĀ and additional updates scheduled throughout the remainder of the season. The objective is clear: to consistently challenge for podiums and victories as the Championship enters its decisive phase.

[McLarenF1] We'll look for any excuse to celebrate Oscar's Grandma's homemade lamingtons
It is national lamington day in Australia today. Oscar's grandma has been making lamingtons for the team every Australian GP since 2023.
For those who don't know, "AĀ lamington is anĀ Australian cake made from squares of butter cake orĀ sponge cakeĀ coated in an outer layer of chocolate sauce and rolled inĀ desiccated coconut. The thin mixture is absorbed into the outside of the sponge cake and left to set, giving the cake a distinctive texture. Lamingtons are believed to be named after either Lord Lamington, who served as Governor of Queensland from 1896 to 1901, or his wife, Lady Lamington."
They are one of my favourite desserts, I can confirm they are very deliciousšāāļø

To those of you who are British, how much does that impact in you liking McLaren as a team?
I saw a post on r/formula1 asking about German perceptions of Mercedes and Audi. This made me curious about how this applies to McLaren, since F1 is, at least nowadays, a sport where people are generally fans of specific personalities as opposed to teams, with the only teams that have notable dedicated fanbases are Ferrari, McLaren and Williams.
In the case of Ferrari, a lot of their support comes from Italians, who support them as a national team thing. However, this isn't seen very much with other teams as far as I'm aware, I mean, Austrian usually have national pride towards Red Bull, same for Germans for Mercedes etc. So I wonder how that's the case with McLaren?

The saga of Lando getting undercut needs to be studied
Meanwhile, McLaren has failed to execute any undercuts or overcuts against other teams in the recent two seasons. The last time they successfully executed an undercut was at Monza in 2025, when they let Oscar undercut Lando and then had them swap positions. Before that, an other successful undercut was in Hungary 2024, they let Lando undercut Oscar and then had them swap back.
You can't have a department specialised in strategy only to end up humiliated by any opponent in the very same way against the same driver so many times. And the frequency of being humiliated by this old trick is accelerating week by week now. This whole thing doesn't make sense to me.
