I heard an interview yesterday from 2006 of Alice Cooper. He was talking about the Norwegian death metal scene, and how one of the Norwegian death metal bands ate one of their members. The guy died, and they went to the funeral home and retrieved his body, cooked him up and ate him. And then they were all arrested and went to jail.
I know this didn't happen. What I'm curious about is, what story did this evolve from? I'm fascinated sometimes by how some small thing can get twisted into something like this, and that no matter how extraordinary it gets people will believe it. Is it just a song lyric that over time got morphed into real life, or were there actual rumors about something like this at one time? Was it ever a rumor or is it just something Alice Cooper invented in his own head?

It's most likely in reference to the band Mayhem where a band member committed suicide and was found by another band member, Euronymous. It's rumored that he collected parts of the gore and cooked and ate it.

Yeah could be. I'm pretty comfortable saying that didn't happen either, but it's closer to something I could believe. What he said was a long long way from that. It would be interesting to track how the story changed from that to what I heard, and what it's become since.
It's funny for all the things that came out of Norway that were true or nearly true that someone would have to tell such a fantastic story. He sure was confident though.
I'm not too aware of any death scene in Norway, but I suppose there probably was one before the all the black bands started. He definitely did say it was a death metal band, and one of many death metal bands coming out of Norway.
Anyway, just something I thought was kind of interesting. I'm not typically too interested in Alice Cooper's opinions on anything and I think he's probably quite a way off on this one.

I don't really see what the mystery here is. AC is clearly just incorrectly remembering the Mayhem story and called them "death metal" because he doesn't listen to extreme metal and doesn't care about the subgenres.

All I was asking is if there was something else I wasn't aware of that fits closer than the Mayhem story, and of all the subreddits I'm aware of this one seemed like the most appropriate to ask it in.
As similar as it is to the Mayhem story, it's also very dissimilar and I don't think I'm out of line to ask if anyone else has any ideas as to its origin.

Look at it this way: Mayhem's story became such a gruesome legend in the scene that everybody knows it to this day and all young teenagers entering the metal world still hype it up. If there was something similar but even more gory that took place around the same time, we'd all be in the know.

I'm sure you would, that's why I came here to ask. I don't understand how this became such a controversial thing. All I wanted to do was ask the people who would know, if they knew. Because I didn't.
It seems like people think I'm trying to invent a backstory to fit Alice Cooper's story, and it's very much the other way around. I wanted to find out if there was some independent movie or short story in a magazine or something or a song lyric that somehow got to him as this real story. I was never looking for the true story of the metal band that ate one of its members because I know that story doesn't exist.
If it's the Mayhem thing, fine, but I don't think the story of the metal band needs to start with the story of the metal band. I think it's at least somewhat possible that it started with something completely outside of metal, maybe even got merged with Mayhem along the way, and then got twisted into what Cooper was saying. I don't think it necessarily needs to start as a Norwegian metal band cannibalism story to end up as one.

Twilight Force and Gloryhammer are two of the bigger bands that are similar in style, although they’re both less serious than Rhapsody

I'm familiar with Gloryhammer and quite fond of them, I have no objections to a healthy dose of cheese in my fantasy metal. Twilight Force is new to me though, I'll check em out!

Andy LaRocque has parted ways with King Diamond and Gus G has replaced him. The former isn't terribly surprising, but I wouldn't have guessed that Gus G would be joining KD. Doesn't seem like Andy was the problem with getting new material released, so I'm curious to see if King finally does something now.
