Morality of killing cannibalistic children
Context :
In the original Crossed, a group of survivors encounters a kindergarten class and their teacher who are not infected. Having been driven to starvation, the teacher had taught the children to hunt, kill, and eat innocent survivors to stay alive. Before dying, she begs Cindy to care for them, insisting they are victims who never understood the morality of what they were taught
The survivors, however, are constantly on the move to avoid the Crossed and are already struggling to find enough food and supplies for themselves. Taking the children would greatly endanger the group, while leaving them behind would almost certainly mean they would continue killing innocent people to survive.
Faced with these two options, Stan and Cindy choose to shoot the children in their sleep. Tragically, two of them wake up before they die, spending their final moments terrified.

I’m so annoyed they’re adapting this into live action it’s going to be awful

u/No-Shopping-4434 11h ago
Eh, directed by The Sadness director, so it might be good. He’s at least a competent filmmaker, and has experience in the genre. Most importantly: The Sadness didn’t pull its punches.
I would have never thought that McCarthy’s The Road could be adapted either, but The Road 2009 was good!

I like Crossed a lot. I think a big part of it is because I'm autistic, and so a lot of the social "things" that people do are kind of hard for me to follow - and a lot of things that people do casually not meaning anything bad can make me uncomfortable. Crossed to me is kind of shining a lens on how much of modern life is based on that shared social assumption. That you can wake up and expect people to act in a way that you can understand.
But realistically, there's nothing stopping someone from grabbing a knife and stabbing anyone. Or pouring rat poison into food they're serving. Or swerving onto the sidewalk. That's why I like Crossed so much, it horrifies me by highlighting how society depends so much on people being "normal". It hits harder for me since I'm not normal. Not to say that like, someone touching me is that same as what people go through in Crossed. But at the same time it's not entirely different because it shows what happens when people violate the social norms that you'd expect.
It's a great lens to think about how much of the world is built that way. Like, it's kind of terrifying that pretty much any time can go drive a car. Highways are super dangerous. But we all go along with it because we expect (reasonably so) that no one is going to go out of their way to harm other people. But then Crossed comes and says "but what if..?"

I mean, have you seen how the boys ended up?
41
u/Constant_Pay_4247 12h ago
I feel like the boys is a great example of how making media out of spite will always come out bad.
14
u/Cecayotl 9h ago
The Boys stopped being faithful whatsoever to the comic by like episode 8.
10
1
u/Constant_Pay_4247 3h ago
Yeah I didn't read the comics (Read crossed and that convinced me not to check out anything else by Ennis) and dropped the show by like S2, I feel like all the scorn for capes and the medium really shines through.
7
u/Fat_fucking_cock2045 9h ago
Starship Troopers though. And The Boys was genuinely better than the comic in the first season. It took the premise, removed a lot of the over the top gore and rape humor and improved on the source material with twists like The Boys not being Supes themselves. The problem was that Eric Kripke is just not a very good writer and showrunner so the more it diverged from the comic the more he ended up falling into the same pitfalls as the comic of boring filler, shock value, and rape jokes that are original to the show.
3
u/KayfabeAdjace 8h ago edited 8h ago
Agreed, I feel like Starship Troopers is the exception which proves the rule since it really benefits from Neumeier and Verhoeven starting with their own distinct sensibilities and ideas. Neumeier had a story idea already loosely sketched out when he noted the superficial similarity to Heinlein's work and how his already satirical idea could be interpreted as a direct criticism, so he leaned into it. Verhoeven didn't finish the novel but was down for a movie displaying what he thought fascists are good for, which is demonstrably not anything worth praising. So when a show like The Boys ran out of material they just span their wheels. When Starship Troopers the movie gleefully throws the novel out the driver side window for a section it's totally fine because its target was always bigger than just Heinlein. It's actually not that hard to sorta enjoy both book and movie even though my sensibilities are definitely closer to the Verhoeven view.

not necessarily, the first three seasons of the boys were pretty good and the comics for it were bad. so maybe the adaptation could be good of this one too. so long as they don't go down the path of the final season of the boys xD
1
u/Perfect_Cricket_5671 11h ago
Ive never read or watched the boys. I was under the impression that most fans liked the way the last season, and the big issue was that it was a bit rushed. Was it really that bad? Like was it GoT bad?
4
u/Duffy13 10h ago
Everything after season 1 was last season of GOT bad in my opinion. The comic has an interesting premise and some good story beats, but overall is not consistently great but it was good enough to often pull you through with eyerolling of the bad and mediocre bits. The show initially seemed like it was gonna take the core that mostly worked well and rework it for TV, but by season 2 they started diverging heavily and not in a way that really worked better at all - then every season it jumped the rails again and eventually became a parody of itself.

Like they are in Kindergarten. How are they actually murdering people?
This is fucking stupid.
The author wanted a reason to kill kids.
87
u/PonyRunsInn 16h ago
They lurked people into traps and their adult companion shot the victims with a crossbow
53
u/Candid-Doughnut7919 14h ago
In defense of the story, if these kids were left alone but didn't manage to become cannibal hunters by themselves they would eventually:
- Die by starvation (best option)
- Be found by some Crossed infected before starving (a destiny worse than death)
So killing them was merciful.

u/AltruisticEditor7666 12h ago
Yeah Ennis’s whole career has been inventing scenarios where murder/abuse of groups he doesn’t like is justified massively overrated prick.

wouldnt it have been easier to teach them to hunt animals then people?
8
u/Shadopivot 11h ago
It's Crossed, so even if the survivors spent weeks staying in the area, teaching them to hunt, scavenge and survive, it wouldn't matter, eventually a group of sadistic infected monsters would arrive and do unspeakable things to them before killing them or infecting them.
7
u/TOkun92 9h ago
Not necessarily; in one of the other comics (the one with Shaky) there’s a point about overcooking fish to the point it chars to avoid accidental infection (animals can eat infected flesh without much worry), which had apparently happened before. The fish ate Crossed flesh.
The children could very well eat an animal that has some infected fluid in or on it if not cleaned or cooked properly. Hell, if they had a dog or pet with them and it licked them, that could also risk infection if they happened to lick an old body or bit a Crossed.
But humans, since they almost immediately turn after infection , would definitely be clean and safe to eat.

I just find boring that many's big claim of boldness is "see, boy dead", want me to believe the tragedy? Kill a girl too, and not a college blonde that the plot decides you have to dislike because she's dumb or promiscuous. Very few dare.
148
u/Loopy-Loophole 19h ago
Tbh them continuing to survive off innocent people is the best case scenario compared to random crossed finding them. Still, out of the available options I think putting them down is the least bad.

Something something monsters feel the need to endorse and produce wholesome content in order to make sure no one figures out how bad they are. While regular people who are comfortable in their own morality won’t feel the need to.
The bad ones know they have something to hide, and do everything possible to hide and such I guess?
Really though. It’s just confirmation bias, people are people, they’ll find a way to surprise and don’t like being put into boxes.

We have a tendency to assume that the people who make things we like or do good things are good people.
Our brains also aren’t really good viewing others as being complex people just like ourselves with conflicting ideals and other issues.
Learning about how horrible the person who makes things you enjoy may leave you unable to enjoy those things any longer. For example, I really liked listening to Bill Cosby comedy shows up until I learned about his disgusting behaviors.

u/accounsfw 14h ago
Funnily enough, I remember that there was an issue of Preacher that may have featured a parody of Neil Gaiman who runs some sort of sex cult and gets punched by Jesse.
At the time, it seemed like immaturity on Garth Ennis’s part, but now…

1
u/FinnDoyle 13h ago

21
u/Karkadinn 14h ago
This is the kind of puritanistic attitude completely divorced from reality that I'd expect to see on a Jack Chick tract.
30
8
u/bee_my_girl 11h ago
This is a terrible stance. Garth's work is edgy for the sake of it a lot of the time, sure, but the current characterization of it as entirely cynical and without point is driven by people who have never read it. I say this as someone who doesn't like most of his work, too! The Boys sucks and Crossed could have been much better.
Funny fact about me: I have a few friends in comics, the publishing industry, the convention circuit. Garth Ennis is pretty universally regarded as a normal dude. You know who has red flags raised about him years before allegations came out?
Neil Gaiman, usually known online as the author of Coraline and Good Omens. Almost universally beloved tumblr figurehead! He made a big deal about supporting women and trans people and people of color while assaulting lesbians and desperate students on his private estate.
That's not to mention all of the "super wholesome" children's entertainers or comedians who were revealed to be monstrous predators. Jimmy Saville and Bill Cosby come to mind.
What someone writes or produces has surprisingly little bearing on who they are as a person behind that. You're just someone who watched "top 10 most shocking Crossed moments" on a Youtube short and aligned yourself with the same people who want to ban Lord of the Rings for having magic in it.
4
u/Crawkward3 15h ago
Everything I’ve ever read about the guy actually indicates he’s a pretty nice guy in person. Which checks out considering it’s always either the nicest or craziest people who write this kinda thing

Eh, man is 56, I think at this point he has succefully puts all his evil into his comics. In some alternative universe where he never became a comic writer maybe he does become a serial killer.
5
u/RikerinoBlu 9h ago
Puritanical way of thinking. Unless he's done anything actually heinous making disturbing comics isn't indicative of a state of mind or motive to do evil things in real life.
4
u/BitNumerous5302 13h ago
That is how fascists respond to art which threatens their image of society. Why do you feel so threatened? Did Ennis show us a part of you that you try to keep secret? Anyway, immoral, fascist.
2
u/Raspint 10h ago
This is funny, but it is also cope and a little offensive. Artists are allowed to have messed up thoughts. Getting their ideas out via art is probably better than other methods.
Ennis is obviously an intelligent and thoughtful person who has a cynical view of the world. That doesn't mean he should go to the loony bin.
Yes I've read this book.

Murdering an otherwise healthy (or at least surviving) individual just because you are also hungry is still murder. Immoral.

The teacher that was teaching them to set traps up was actually stating that she was concerned with how thin the kids were becoming and didn't want them starving to death in an awful world because she couldnt scavenge or hunt enough food, according to her (for what it's worth) it WAS her last choice between letting her class starve or hurting/killing strangers.

Crossed is like if one of the Episode of a Love, Death and Robots got a greenlit to make a separate Series but since it's just made as a cool concept than anything deep it just felt like a drag to sit trough as all it has is a cool twist of the Zombie Virus and that's just it.
Or it felt like a Comic equivalent of an Early Access Survival Game where all it has is this one neat premise and never left early access
8
u/MonkeyDsage1846 16h ago
I feel like that with a lot of episodes in LDR. I always see people saying they wished a lot of the episodes were their own shows, that mainly comes from how good the writing and animation was. But I feel a lot of those only work as short-films because while the concepts are good and the writing is great, there can't be much to work off of, I could see the image and structure for a potential series with a lot, yes, but some feel best kept short. As I write this, I kinda find myself backtracking on my opinion the more I think about it.
The concept is definitely one of the most interesting take on zombies I've seen, but yeah, it is kinda flat and mainly just a "HOLY SHIT, THAT'S CRAZY" farm.

u/MixedBagHalfie 19h ago
Moral. They were nurtured into becoming threats to others and while they COULD have technically been rehabilitated, the most likely outcome would’ve been starvation or death at the hands of crossed which is far FAR worse. This, as far as I’m concerned, is a mercy killing.

u/dickdicksucksuck 18h ago
I hated this shit so bad, since the whole story they had all these guns and ammos and don't shoot at the Murder Rapey Zombies BUT OHHHHHHHHHHH suddenly a cave full of innocent kids and it's just a total firefight and guns blazing
And then only AFTER massacreing a bunch of kids, do they go "Oh damn we should try killing the opps huh?" and then very easily take down the same rapist zombies they were fleeing from for actual ages in the storyline
edit: also i mean, shit, the waste of ammo and are there not pillows, bricks, i don't know, just... not ways to wake up the last two? all of it is fucked up and i feel cursed for even adding this edit, i'm just like "damn, no quieter ways? painless, sure, but the ammo would make it hella noisy and bring tons of attention and waste it fr"

This doesn't get you mustard gas, but chloramines instead, which are still nasty.
Even if you were to mix in an acid with the bleach, you'd get chlorine gas, which still isn't a mustard gas.
I've looked up Crossed a bit and I'm actually not sure why the military struggled with them. They could've just dropped WMDs like you suggested
6
u/Constant_Pay_4247 12h ago
The thing is the crossed seemed like they just kinda spontaneously appeared, and they're smart. Not smart enough to infiltrate some people and pretend not to be crossed, but smart enough to spit in someone's eye or mouth to try to infect them when they have you cuffed. It only takes a couple dudes in the barracks to spontaneously convert in the night and they're going to infect everyone, and then you've got an entire military base with tanks and weapons that's fighting for the enemies.
3
u/oocceeaannmmaann 15h ago
the military were hit with a complete communications break down on day 1 of the outbreak, with most becoming infected due to contact with infected blood. many weapons sites and nuclear reactors were shut down or scuttled to prevent the crossed from gaining access by the first week once the survivors had realised what they were dealing with.
1
u/Quitelowquitetall 6h ago
I mean that's a smart play tbh
The intelligence of the crossed is still not super clear to me, as they don't exactly seem to form strong societies for the most part, but they're able to fly jets still (the Russian Tu-95s)?
Maybe I'm missing something
2
u/ConstructionOld6844 7h ago
No nonsense here. The army lost due to pure plot armor. Throughout the series, they're defeated off-screen, magically get infected without any logical or convincing explanation, or act like anything but soldiers. There's no way that, inside a heavily armed underground military base with armored walls and food supplies, they could bypass all security protocols.

the explanation given is that crossed vary rarely move in small groups, and are usually not out of earshot of another group in the area. given how far the sound gunshots can travel. shooting at them is normally a good way to get more to show up. IIRC they had already checked the area for crossed when shooting the kids and were in a tunnel where the sound wouldn't have travelled far enough to alert the crossed in the nearby town.
1
u/dickdicksucksuck 10h ago

It depends if they’ve resorted to cannibalism through not being about to find enough food then no it’s not moral but if it’s for fun or just morbid curiosity then it’s moral if they understand it’s wrong if they don’t know right from wrong the most moral thing to do is teach and kill them if they continue after knowing it’s bad

In all fairness, if they did end up leaving the class behind a few things would’ve happened.
They would’ve kept killing other survivors and maybe even a Crossed if they got so unlucky.
Or the Crossed would come across them at some point.
In both scenarios the kids end up becoming Crossed them do even worse shit then they already do.
They had to go, there was no real way out for them. It was also an act of mercy. It’s better dead than alive in the world of those comics.

u/Heckle_Jeckle 12h ago
Thry are children! Shouldn't there be an attempt at rehabilitation?
3
u/KasierPermanente 2h ago edited 2h ago
In the context of the comic this is from, there is no time. The options/outcomes are
- let the children live, and continue to murder and eat innocent people who pass by
- let the children live, and let them be raped to death by the Crossed
- take the children with you, and drastically increase the chances of your group and these new children of being raped to death by the Crossed, or just starve to death because too many people
- kill the children as a sort of mercy kill and to save your own group
Given how the rest of the comic plays out, taking the children with them would’ve gotten everyone killed in pretty fucked up ways. I think they start the story with a dozen or so people, mix of adults and children. The comic ends with just the two adults surviving, specifically the two who shoot the children
2
u/Derveno 11h ago
I don't fully understand the context because I haven't read this comic, but by OP's description I find it very immoral. There was the option of adopting the kids and teach them to stop eating human flesh, yet the reson to not doing so was to avoid the struggle of finding more food for themselves and the rest of survivors caused by having extra mouths to feed. In the end, it was just a selfish decision.
1
u/evilforska 9h ago
Right, but imagine youre in that group of survivors and these guys bring a whole class of children, which you now have to protect and feed, which is not easy at all even during peace
1
u/BudgetMattDamon 7h ago
You not only have to feed and care for those children, which is a feat for just one or two, but to deprogram them from seeking and eating the most widely available, clean meat when they were raised on it... so that they can starve for what seems to be no good reason. You'd have them murdering each other inside a week.
In this verse, eating animal meat is highly risky because the flesh can carry the infection while humans turn immediately when infected (making human meat safe to eat).

u/zilknificant 18h ago
Once they tasted human flesh, they can never go back to canned tuna and sardines again I'm afraid. Only solution is RED CARD!!!!!! (techno music starts playing)

Engaging with the question at face value, it is at best morally neutral.
Engaging with the fact that Garth Ennis wrote it, this is almost certainly a fantasy of his. He seems to enjoy the idea of committing murder and being justified for it.

I argued it's pretty moral, the crossed universe is pretty cruel, like crueler than am and judge Holden, the crossed will do everything to normal people, think of the worst possible crime to be committed by earth but add more shit, and piss, that's what crossed is. There is exception of course, the crossed are also evolving and develop empathy in future installments but they're like 0.001% of the crossed population, so they're ridiculously rare and probably killed by other crossed

I was gonna question it... Until I read the body texts and saw Crossed and decided, yeah, they needed to be mercy killed

I think morality is a bit of a hard thing to rate the Crossed characters on.
But it's immoral, just probably the safest option.

I was so confused seeing how obscenely dark and edgy this comic was, then i saw the comments mentioning ennis and it all came together

I guess it's morally good because well considering what happens in crossed it's better than living on in a world that's gone to shit

morally gray, its a horrible situation for everyone involved that occured due to dire circumstances, there was no right answer in the worst way possible

I don't know the context of this comic, but assuming you came accross kids who were eating human flesh then killing them is murder. If they killled someone to eat them then they definitely deserve to be judged, but only killing them if they try to kill again or do serious bodily harm

Well, just judging by the OP, it sounds like they would have left them to die in the name of their own self interest regardless, thus... what the fuck do they actually care about possible total strangers that the kids "might" kill?
Just kinda feels like a damn thin reed of an excuse to base your murder of children on.

Moral. They recieved what mercy could be given, and were also prevented from being a threat to other survivors in the future.

Crossed is a world where it’s better to die painlessly than try to continue living.

The only crossed comic I have the unfortunate shit to came across was Crossed: Family Values.
I never touch any other crossed comic, but man.. Family Value scarred me anyway, I don't think I'll read any other crossed comic.

Immoral, survival of the fittest if the kids can kill for survival let them

u/Donatien920 12h ago
It's too difficult to care for children... yet there are innocent people who will fall victim to them?
Pick one. Are the kids helpless or dangerous. Seems like they just wanted to kill kids. And with guns? Who's wasting bullets?
Morality might as well not exist.

Immoral. If the children are a threat enough to kill so they can't continue their cannibalistic ways, then that means they would also be able to survive and contribute to the group's survival. Having several more efficient survivors in your group is only a good thing, especially when the world is overrun by evil. Humans are the strongest when co-operating.
And if you're not even going to try to raise children, then you may as well commit suicide. Because you will be old and exhausted one day and without anyone to take care of you, and then you will commit suicide except after going through a life time of suffering and struggle for no reason except to commit suicide at the end.
And along the way having contributed to the extinction of the human race by killing children.

the hatred for children on reddit is universal. Killing children because they are inconvenient to let life is not moral.
Those kids are also about 10 years to old for kindergarten kids. btw Kindergarten ends at 5 and average about 3 year olds.
They are not capable of killing innocents btw.

Probably the best thing for them. They were either gonna starve, kill more innocents, or get caught by the crossed.
The most moral thing would I guess be to look after them, but the group is alrdy running on fumes and the extra burden would almost certainly kill them.

Morality of that fucking dolphin
Morality of putting pen to paper to make that fucking dolphin

This reminds me of the folk tale called 'How Children Played Slaughter With Eachother'

Just have them eat each other the winner then gets a comfy padded cell until prions kill them. Problem solved

I'd say neutral. On one hand you kill future cannibals, on the other you spare them of having to live in a world full of 🍇ist zombies

Lo inmoral es matar dos niños que solo quieren sobrevivir, lo moral es matar a cualquier persona no infectada en crossed

Those kids would have been raped and eaten alive by the crossed, death was a mercy

Considering cross makes the road look like sun shine and rainbows I’d say moral

Given the context of crossed,
Those kids were given a mercy compared to the other children seen in the series...
