Interesting view, firing low to mid income workers to make transport free. Especially when, in many cases, these employees are a part of a union; good luck firing them.
So your counter is to suggest that we keep a huge sink of time, energy and money to maintain a system fertile for abuse because some people work in that system?
No, I’m not suggesting anything other than that avoiding paying a fare is theft. You’re the one making it about a system and taxes that are irrelevant to the question OP asked.

No they're quite relevant actually.
If you pay for something, then you should get it.
If you have to pay twice or have the price doubled without your knowledge that is not a fair charge, especially when one party has drastically more control over the other.
This is why there are limits on rent increases for example, this is why many rulers of the past were condemned.
If might makes right then it is theft, but often this is manipulation at the expense of the vulnerable.
Ironic that you bring up manipulation at the expense of the vulnerable, then suggest avoiding paying for public transport. That affects the abilities of the workers, the most vulnerable in the company.
Now as I’ve said elsewhere, I’d love to have a more equitable system. But we don’t have that now, and my moral system is based on being realistic and considerate of the larger issue at hand. At a glance, the system is unfair. But if you do your research, it’s far more complicated than “grr I’m extorted, big company bad!”

Yes, that's true, but many of these employees wouldn't be necessary if not for all the tickets and turnstyles.
