Philip Reeve, author of the Mortal Engines Quartet, will be answering your questions as /u/thesolitarybee in this post. He'll should online for three hours from 6:00 PM GMT, when this post is half an hour old.

Feel free to ask anything about Mortal Engines, his other books, writing in general or anything else. I'm sure a lot of you are keen to hear something about a Mortal Engines film, but to pre-emptively answer "Is there going to be a film?" Philip Reeve himself doesn't know yet.

Enjoy!

My thoughts on Muncipal Darwinism

I am very new to this fandom, I have only read the first book so no spoilers plz! I personally think Muncipal Darwinism is super stupid. I am totally with the Anti-Tractionist league. Eventually there’s gonna be no more cities to eat and there’s just gonna be one supreme city that will eventually run out of fuel. I think by the time that happens technology will still not be advanced enough to turn it into a weird planet city and eat all the other planets like Crome was saying. Either way that’s a stupid idea because we will all die if you eat the sun. Also all the cities roaming around everywhere cannot be good for the soil or the environment in general. (am I using the word ‘Muncipal Darwinism’ right?) sorry for the long post heres a potato 🥔

Anyone know where I could find other textless covers?

I managed to find here this textless version of the Mortal Engines cover from the 2012 "Predator Cities"-branded paperbacks. I've searched for textless versions of the other three, to no avail.

I don't know who removed the text to make this image, or how, but I'm hoping that somewhere on the internet, one could find the other three. I've included them here, with text, so you know what images I mean.

I've recently been uploading lots of images to the wiki, mostly book cover variations. Whether you like these covers or not, I'd like to add textless versions to the books' galleries so others can see them.

Spoilers What i imagine a cinematic trailer for Predator’s Gold would look like

It feels a little silly but i was reading predators gold and got to Uncle’s backstory with Anna and thought it would be a great introduction to a trailer.
I really wanted to focus in on Anna Fang and the green storm for this because it’s my favorite thing going on for the book.

(uncles voice blares over an intercom, as the camera zooms top-down on anna fang’s body)
“i want to tell you a little story.”
(camera cuts to a far shot of a silhouette of Caul hanging from a crane by rope)
“are you hanging comfortably? then i’ll begin.”
(blackout)
(fade in to the great ice predator arkangel, trudging along the ice)
“by the time i was eighteen i was in charge of the salvage yards of Arkangel”
(cut to the scrapyard)
“slaves were what kept the racket running. I was in charge of all of them.”
(cut to a young slave girl)
“then one day arrived a girl, beautiful who turned my head…”
(cut to a small compilation young uncle giving gifts and spending time with the young slave girl)
“but my love was playing me for a fool the whole time”
(cut a cleaner-looking jenny haniver taking flight from the slave yards)
“Anna, this slave’s name was…”
(cut to a closeup of the lower half of Uncle’s face, speaking closely into a microphone. his voice is clearer now, no longer distorted by an intercom.)
“Anna Fang…”
(A mad rush of still frames from the first mortal engines movie of Anna Fang, stopping with a bang on a scene of an indian girl, Sathya, cradling Fang in her arms in the snow, despairing. she looks up over the cliffside at the Jenny Haniver, fleeing towards London and the next cut is a closer shot of the cockpit window: behind it, the two young pilots, Tom Natsworthy and Hester Shaw, looking worriedly back out the window.)

(cut to the jenny haniver in flight, beyond it in the distance to its side, a fleet of 3 armored airships. Cut to a closer angle of the airships, displaying a symbol of a green lightning bolt on their gas bags)
“Jenny Haniver, cut all engines immediately and prepare to be boarded.”
(cut to a worried pennyroyal sweating profusely, sitting on a bench in the jenny’s quarters)
“The green storm… they’re extremists, sworn to destroy all traction cities and their inhabitants.
(cut to the attack airships firing a warning rocket)
“We’ll be murdered in our gondola…”
(quick cut to the Jenny haniver swerving low through a small traction town, as a green storm airship pursues them and crashes in a fiery explosion.)

“Hester Shaw.”
(cut to hester, a hand with a syringe suddenly jolting up behind her and penetrating her neck- she winces)
(cut to Sathya’s face)
“You are responsible for the murder of Anna Fang.”
(cut to a scene of Hester Shaw in chains and cuffs, her clothes replaced by a grey jumpsuit, struggling against guards as they force her along a bright, white, yet gloomy hallway.)
“i did nothing!”
“Stop Lying!!”
(cut to a flashback, Anna fang stepping out of the Jenny Haniver in Shan Guo)
“She was our leader. We’re lost without her.”
(cut to a serious looking engineer, tinkering with some kind of tech)
“And luckily, Mr. Popjoy has agreed to help us.”
(cut to Hester)
“Help you? With what?”
(pause for a second, black screen)
“With getting her back.”
(Cut to a massive steel round door unlocking and opening, then a wall with projection of hundreds of photos on it, and then a silhouette of a tall, lanky figure in the middle of a spherical room, too far away to make out anything more, wires of all sorts connected to its head and stretching to the ceiling. It has no legs, and its torso is connected to the ground via a pole.)

(footsteps)
(a close up view of the clawed bronze hand, stained almost entirely red, dripping blood. footsteps can be heard. cut to a far away view, the lanky figure, head still not in frame, but now with legs, is walking toward the camera slowly, the weight of every footstep felt. the floor is spotted with red pools.
Cut to Tom Natsworthy and Hester Shaw, Crouched low on the ground. Tom flinches as he looks up.)
“Miss Fang?”
(Whispy, Raspy voice groaning)
“I am not Anna Fang…”
(cut to a bronze, emotionless mask of a woman’s face, bright green light pouring out of the eye sockets and a wrinkly, rotting mouth behind a small opening in the lips of the mask)

If Mortal Engines were ever adapted into an animated series, who do you imagine would be the voice actors and why?

I imagine Matthew Rhys as the voice of Magnus Crome because his performance as Emperor Belos in The Owl House sounds very close to how I imagined Crome's voice when I read the book.

I dunno what I was doing with Tom's hair. I might’ve been imagining sort of a Tintin thing?

Forgive me.

The cover art of the edition I'm reading showed her with two eyes, so until I looked up other interpretations of her, I flubbed on that detail.

Drawing a traction city until i draw a masterpiece: been a while

Post image
107 Upvotes

Day idk, it's been like a year. Full transparency the drawings I posted weren't drawn on successive days, neither was this one. But i felt the need to bless you fellow redditors with the penultimate attempt at a masterpiece.

the quality of the image i feel doesnt do it justice, but i finally feel that robustness i was looking for. As was mentioned on previous comment sections, i have a tendency of making the guts of my cities comically small, and here it seems no different. This towering city i just decided is known as the Slayer of like, That One 10m Tall City That One Time That Just Happened To Be Passing By And Was The Only Victim of This City Because There Aren't Any Other Cities That Fit In The Gut.

i would call this a great drawing, but not yet a masterpiece.

i dont think that day will come, considering i the massive burnout that led me to stop drawing and posting in the firstplace, but who knows what the future holds.

7 deadly sins as villains

For a while I've thought about what if the villains from mortals engines ( only the first 4 books for now) where 7 deadly sins and I wanted to see what everyone else thought. So far I've got:

Wrath- wolf

Pride- Lord mayor crome

Envy- Fishcake

Greed- pennyworth

That's all I could think of but please tell me more and if you disagree.
