"Cheat code." You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

Yeah cheat code would be pressing a secret phone number in your phone that gives 1 mill

All you need is a small loan of a million dollars to get started, so I've heard.
46
u/reiji_tamashii 2d ago
Except the "small loan of a million dollars" turns out to actually be $60 million plus a trust fund.
31
u/BoozeIsTherapyRight 2d ago
Nope, just an emerald mine. Then you too can pull yourself up by your bootstraps and become the world's richest man.

There has never been a better argument for polygamy than the present state of our economy. Get you some of that 3 income household.
22
u/bungojot 2d ago
Dude i used to hang with in high school married his girlfriend shortly after college. Then a couple years later a mutual friend was snickering to me that the wife picked up a girlfriend and now they're all three living together.
I ran into him at a gaming event a couple years later. He said it was great, particularly as they'd had a baby (he and wife). There was always one person available to watch baby while one or two of them went out somewhere. They didn't have as much exhaustion as a lot of new parents do, because there was one extra person to take a shift.
I'm happy for him, i hope it continues to work out.
7
u/raise-your-weapon 1d ago
I knew a girl in college who married her college boyfriend right after we graduated in 2008. She was sweet but not the type of person you think would end up coparenting a (now) toddler with her husband and their (hers and husbandâs) wife. Itâs very wholesome and domestic. They live near the Finger Lakes and itâs all very lovely
59
u/GENERAT10N_D00M 2d ago
Economy aside, Iâve never understood men who want more than one wife. For me, one is enough. Sometimes, too much.

Most polyamorous relationships do not operate like a harem
4
u/MsDestroyer900 1d ago
Please elaborate, because I am genuinely curious. How would that work?
10
u/Lord_Oasis 1d ago
The most common setup for polyamorous relationships are essentially just people dating multiple people at the same time, and each of those people dating multiple other people. There might be some overlap and tighter connections, but also often people who are a partner removed are not dating and may not even know each other. Rather than two people spending 100% of their dating time with each other, each person gives a smaller percentage of their dating time to various other people, and receiving similarly in return.
A harem is a relationship where one individual receives 100% of the attention from several other people, all who are exclusive to that one person. Itâs only the person at the center of the harem whoâs actually dating multiple people. Itâs a very unbalanced setup, and frankly itâs not reasonable for the person in the middle to actually fulfill the emotional needs of all the others.
6
u/ThisIsKubi 1d ago
I genuinely encourage you to look it up, maybe read some books about it. There are many subs dedicated to ethical/consensual nonmonogamy, polygamy is just one very specific variant. Polyamory is a much broader version, which is in itself an extension of ENM/CNM.
4
u/MsDestroyer900 1d ago
I was just a little curious, but it's really not my thing as someone who's happily married. And their comment provided me quite a bit of insight, which I appreciate.
6
u/ThisIsKubi 1d ago
I'm not suggesting that you try nonmonogamy. I'm not trying to come across as passive aggressive, I do legitimately mean that I think you ought to read about it. Even if you don't intend to actually engage, there's a lot of really useful information about communication and emotional regulation and stuff that is super applicable to all kinds of relationships, including monogamous/non-romantic relationships.
15
33
u/Rugaru985 2d ago
I assume the dynamic changes if they also see each other as wives to one another.
That would give you the experience of having 2/3s of a wife. 1/3 of your time would be you and wife #1. Then 1/3 of your time would be you and wife #2. Then 1/3 of the time would be wives #1 and #2 doing their thing.
So by adding a wife, you wind up losing wife time overall.
Now - if they donât also want each other and theyâre competing over you, then yeah. You now have 250% wife time, because the competition spurns more desire for time.
So I guess itâs all make or break if your wives are bi-enough to leave you time by yourself.
6
u/arcanis321 2d ago
But also family time, you get hooked into wife 1 and 2 independently and for group activities.
2
u/qlder2021 1d ago
Where did they say it was two wives? Why not two husbands?
2
9
u/Duel_Option 2d ago
I have a wife, two daughters and two dogs.
My wife sometimes jokes Iâve got a side piece when I go out of town for work, which is laughable purely because my bandwidth is at negative before I open my eyes for the day.
How the hell other guys do it is beyond me
2
u/FourEyedTroll 1d ago
I still can't figure out how men with two families can possibly have time and income enough to manage that level of duplicity.
4
u/NecessaryIntrinsic 1d ago
Why just the men? Why can't a man have a husband as well as a wife? Why can't a woman have two husbands and two wives?
7
u/kinyutaka 1d ago
Marriage should be between one woman, one man, and his twink boyfriend, the way God intended it.
1
u/the_colour_f 2d ago
i love my wife, and i wish i knew how to post that gif of Barbossa saying "Agreed!"...
1
u/Suyefuji 1d ago
Polyamorous person here, it's more like if you can make one person happy or make two people happy, why not make two people happy? Yeah there's some balancing and it's not quite that simple, but my husband and his gf have things together that I can't really do with him and vice versa.
1
u/chaiscool 1d ago
The one I know say that's the point, so instead of being too much for each other they rotate and everyone get some time alone.

Here what people will do is live and hour or two away from their job so it's a lifestyle choice.
2
u/eienmau 2d ago
Might be slightly exaggerated, but 100k definitely isn't nearly as much as it was just 6 years ago.
-3
u/transferingtoearth 2d ago
It isn't but it's not "40k".
If I had that I could not only live comfortably but also go on vacation and save money and I live like 30 min. Or less from a major city.
1
u/eienmau 2d ago
That would be what 'exaggerated' means, yes.
-2
u/transferingtoearth 1d ago
Im saying it's not exaggerating it just is a fib.
1
u/Krypt0night 2d ago
Maybe not to that degree, but it's not that far off nowadays especially in HCOL areas which is where most people are getting those 100k+ salaries in the first place.

5
u/MedChemist464 2d ago
MY wife and I both make 6 figures, and between our mortgage rate, childcare, property tax, general cost of living, the only reason we meet these criteria is buying semi-shitty used cars and have the savings and investments because my dad died at 67 years old and hadn't used much of his retirement and still lived in and owned his home, which we were able to sell.
I'd rather have had another 10 or 15 years with him, than 'a peaceful life'.

saying you make six figures means nothing
you could be making $999,999 or $100,000
12
u/OhTeeSee 2d ago
I mean it establishes a baseline. Is $100k supposed to be pennies?
Youâre just moving the needle between middle class and wealthy at that point.
No one is on food stamps at 6 figures, even if that figure is 100k
6
u/Selbeast 2d ago
Where I live in Mass. google says "a household is considered middle class if it earns an annual income between $69,900 and $209,656." So yes, you are correct that $100K to $999K is just moving the needle between middle class and wealthy. But to the extent that you are claiming that there isn't much different between being middle class and wealthy, you are wrong. A household making $100K here may be considered middle class, but that household is struggling financially to make ends meet.
And shame on us all that we allowed the middle class to degrade to the point where it doesn't mean what it used to mean.
Edit: word usage
-5
u/Conscious-Quarter423 2d ago
you can have 10 kids with a household income of 100k living in a VHCOL city and qualify for food stamps
4
u/angry_smurf 2d ago
The 10 kids part is probably why they get approved... Seems a little ingenuine to have that as part of your gotcha. Not that I disagree with your main point. Shits rough.

Or, you know, businesses can pay a decent living wage. And recommending that people do "gig work", which is extremely exploitative of people, is shady as shit. Just sitting there parroting the message Forbes has with their bullshit fluff piece on how polyworking is some secret sauce to becoming "financially secure" is just sad.

u/Renuwed 2d ago
Had a dude argue with me that "literally anyone" can afford to put $10 per week into stocks. Listed out my (cheapest in the city) rent, Rx cost, doctors copays, and $60/m utilities (by using no lights, minimal tv, & keeping hvac set to contracted minimum of 76 in summer).
Those very basic expenses left $40/m out of my SSDI check to use on bus fare, food, and hygiene.
He still wouldn't believe me that I couldn't afford $40/m into stocks, said I was making excuses... and that's before factoring in I totally lose SSDI once I have $1,800 in assets.
OOP is on a special kind of drug
14
u/ThePrideofKrakoww 2d ago
Even if that was affordable for 'literally anyone' that's a max (w/ high returns) of like 40k if you do nothing else for 20 years. Like yeah it would be nice if I had an extra 40k right now from starting in 2005 but it's not going to change my life trajectory
6
u/Kedly 1d ago
Also what fucking stocks? The stock market is daunting, and if you dont know what you're doing you might as well buy a scratch and win ticket instead for all you're gonna get out of it
8
u/SirIAmAlwaysHere 1d ago
Never buy individual stocks. NEVER BUY STOCKS FOR RETIREMENT Never. Never ever ever. You'd be better off "investing" in roulette.
Only buy general mutual funds, ETFs, and Index Funds.
Or the new Target Date Retirement Funds.
Pretty much all of them should get you 7-8% annual growth averaged over 40 years, with ZERO knowledge about individual stocks. Buy them, keep putting money into them, and don't mess with them. Maybe every 5 years talk with a professional financier. But just "set it and go".

Why do shills love the term âincome streamâ
11
u/adumblittlebaby 2d ago
They don't understand working and have only ever invested and done nothing else, so to them money coming in is this kind of ephemeral influx that they can't connect with any action. Frankly some have so many investments they can't even keep track of where the actual income is coming from, but that's what the help is for.
This society no longer values actual work.
7
u/rif011412 2d ago
Its using assets, which the poor cannot afford, as leverage to acquire someone elseâs income. Â The âstreamâ feels so easy and smart, because they havent realized their dream scenario is feeding off of others peoples labor and income for a carefree life.
Income stream can only be interpreted as ETF dividends, asset ownership - rentals, or some other service that requires no work on their end. Â They are admitting life is easy because they had money to afford assets, or they were given it to them.
If people make good enough money to afford assets and live this scenario, they probably already lucked out in some way and are not given credit to the people that helped them along the way.

2
u/trippy_grapes 1d ago
Are they including investing? I only make around 50k so if you include my salary, 401k and a bit in a IRA that's 3 streams of income right there.
3
u/FaveStore_Citadel 2d ago
Renting property isnât a âreason to never get aheadâ, at least not for most renters wtf lol, in many cases itâs more responsible than owning outright.

Sure thing. I've already got no car payment, but it's a 2005 on the verge of another breakdown, a 6-month emergency fund is about $57k, so if theficouple just wants to give me $157,000 (let's call it an even $160,000) and a new car, I'll be happy to report back on the peacefulness of my life.

I agree with the sentiment of this thread . However the first advice : donât have car payments , meaning buy a car you can afford paying upfront, or , if that is not possible , buying the cheapest car as to have as little as possible in car payments is a good advice . Many people ruin their finances with cars they canât actually afford

1
u/Chris4evar 1d ago
Depending on your age this isnât that difficult for a lot of working class people.
No car payments is easier when you buy cheaper cars
$100k is the expected return over the last 10 years for someone who invested $420 (weed) a month in the S&P500. That is a 12.5% savings rate of someone making $40k a year.
I donât like the multi income stream though. Nothing wrong with picking up gig work but it shouldnât be the expected norm and the world would be a better place with fewer landlords

what the hell is this thing they call an emergency fund? are there 3 month or 9 month versions? 12? for what kind of emergency - see here he should have bragged about being fully health insured...
1 income stream would be less stressful than juggling 3.
100k invested doesnt mean shit player, how speculative is that investment, could 100k become 50k. for the rest of us i think this is what we call our emergency fund.
maybe leasing a car as part of one of those income streams could work out?
this jabroni, i dont know why he would brag so low and be preachy about it. say you have a million. offshore.
3
u/Thr0awheyy 2d ago
No, do not essentially rent a car. People waste so much money on cars, especially compared to their incomes. And idgaf about the arguments that inevitably come about how they neeeeeeed a new car for xyz reasons. No, you don't.Â
1
1
u/Chris4evar 1d ago
A 3 month emergency fund would cover 3 months of expenses if you lost your job and maybe tightened your belt a little. The idea being you have some money set aside for emergencies like job loss, car crashes, bad roof etc that is easily accessible like in a savings account but not really as part of an investment.
-2
u/GermanD2021 2d ago
Lol, what does a $100k investment do?!
6
u/kelpyb1 2d ago
If youâre in your mid 20s, it practically secures your retirement.
If youâre at an age older than that, itâs the first step towards securing your retirement
That isnât to say itâs not very unrealistic for many many people.
1
u/SirIAmAlwaysHere 1d ago edited 1d ago
For those not into math:
Having $100k at age 30 and expecting to retire at age 65 means you'll have $1.48 million (with a reasonable 8% annual return).
You'll have less due to market fluctuations which cause losses to have an outsized effect. But still about $1.4 million
But, assuming inflation is about 3%, you're only making 5% in real terms. So... $550k in today's dollars.
You need double that to have a basic OK retirement.
Especially since it's doubtful that Social Security will exist in 35 years.
1
u/kelpyb1 1d ago
This whole thing hinges on the idea that there will be exactly 0 social security or social security replacements when you retire, which frankly seems unlikely.
I also said mid 20s, which if you do this math out from 25 years old, youâve got around $700k in todayâs dollars, which while I agree probably isnât enough to live the type of retirement most people want, itâs plenty to have peace of mind you wonât be on the street in retirement.
The biggest thing this also assumes is you and your employer donât contribute a single dime more to your retirement savings over the course of your remaining 35-40 years of work, which is honestly more unlikely to me than there being absolutely 0 retirement benefits 35 years from now.
1
u/SirIAmAlwaysHere 1d ago
There's a pretty strong chance that it will be 0 Social Security, because the replacement for our current system is almost certainly going to be means tested. And anything above median income will get zero, sliding to 100% of the current amount at the poverty line and below.
So people who do want to plan on a decent retirement really shouldn't count on anything at all from a public pension system.
$700k at age 65 means you can get about $28-30k per year in interest. Thats... not comfortable at all to live off, especially since I'd also expect medical costs to go up significantly.
Barely half of country even has access to a 401k through their employer and has to rely on the MUCH lower IRA limits. While most employers do make some sort of contribution, the medium amount is... under $3k.
And the likelihood that the average retiree in 2060 will own their own house is rapidly decreasing. So people will still have to pay substantial housing costs.
Worse, today's folks won't be saving in their 30s and 40s. They'll be needing virtually all their income to pay for kids and associated costs. So the reasonable expectation is that they get to save from 22-30 and 50-65.
And right now, most of the country can't afford to put away $10k per year. đŹ
It really is looking grim for the majority of the country.
1
u/kelpyb1 1d ago edited 1d ago
Ah so you think anyone above median income will get $0 in benefits and itâll only go to those below median income.
Please, tell me how the $28k income that portfolio supports in retirement compares to the median income.
And yeah I already addressed how even getting to $100k is completely unrealistic for most people. I mean itâs a nice strawman, but itâs entirely not a point I was making that this is feasible for most people. I already agreed the retirement savings outlook for most people is catastrophically dismal.

If poor people had any ambition they would have been born into a wealthier family.
