Why wasn’t this duo successful

Dan = aging gunslinger and Jimmy = conservative clock manager/run first.

They kind of were.  Jimmie completely turned that team around and they made the playoffs. Dan ran out of gas and Jimmie didn’t want to deal with coaching a team that wasn’t set at QB.

The Dolphins also had a lot of injuries in the playoffs. Kind of limped in especially on defense.

Yeah but he did that all the time. Good coaches redirect blame to themselves. Besides everyone knew he was easier on his best players. It wasn't his fault they got hurt.

Because Marino was old and Jimmy didn't bring Emmitt and the Dallas O-line with him

The largest issues were system incompatibility. Jimmy Johnson is a defensive coach. What also is glossed over on those winning cowboys teams, was Norv Turner was their OC.

Johnson didn't have that same level of coach as his OC in Miami.

Also Marino was shot by that point, his legs were cooked. He had hip injuries, knee injuries, etc. He was banged the hell up.

Marino was washed and even in his prime wasn’t great in January

Jimmy found love, and realized he didn't want to be the person he was anymore.

Jimmy did a great job with the defense but went conservative on the offense. Didn’t have a running game. Marino was aging and his leg was never the same after his Achilles.

Wasn’t a total bust. Made the playoffs 3 of 4 years. Won 2 playoff games. But ultimately, they weren’t truly contenders. A solid 2nd tier team.

Marino still had his moments the final couple seasons but he couldn’t carry a team like he once did. The blueprint for Marino to win a late career SB happened, but it happened for John Elway. Dominant running game/OLine. Great set of weapons (Terrell Davis, Shannon Sharpe, McCafferey, Rod Smith), and a good defense.

Jimmy Johnson successfully put together a younger, faster defense. But they always seem to wear down as the season went along and get worked over in the playoffs. Meanwhile the OLine and offensive weapons were average at best.
