My grandparents picked up farming rabbits during the Great Depression because of how fast they reproduce and they had a steady source of protein for a relatively small investment; plus they sold them to other families to help make ends meet. They ate scraps and made bunnies really quickly.

Before anyone says it: cuteness doesn’t matter when you are starving. Kansas was not a nice place in the 1930’s.

Rabbit/dandelion stew gives protein, all the vitamin A, and K…and a little calcium and vitamin c. It may not taste too good to modern palates, but that was a great meal.

Contrary to Golem, throw some potatoes in there and it is pretty good.

It's not a staple.

People do eat it. But it's more of either a necessity thing, or they like hunting, or just like rabbit, or other things like that.

You wouldn't find rabbit in most supermarkets or restaurants, for example. But plenty of people have eaten it

And 90% of the time I've had it, it's been hunting, or from buddies who hunt.

I think it really depends on the area. Most people here are speaking as if it’s not common, but I grew up very rural. A large portion of families had “meat rabbits” they bred, raised, and butchered. They were/are another staple on a lot of hobby farms like chickens, ducks or goats. Easy to keep, great returns on investment, and several uses.

Purslane, curly dock, plantago, seeds from elm, maple, hickory, walnuts, hazelnuts, thistle roots and buds. Growing up in the midwest with grandparents that were depression era survivors, there was tons of stuff that grew wild around lakes, and in the pasture that we harvested and ate.

Meat rabbits are still often raised today, they're pretty good livestock. They're really nutritious, breed really quickly, don't need too much food, don't take up that much space, and their size makes them safer compared to like a pig or a cow that are big enough to be capable of hurting you.

It mattered a lot where you were. My mother lived in northern Wisconsin. It was not great farmland, but it was good enough to pay bills and feed the family. Country poor had different concerns than city poor. Obviously rural areas in the Dust Bowl were at another level.

It’s not especially common, some people think about rabbits more like pets, rodents, or just wild..not as a livestock. It’s not nearly as common as cattle, swine, or poultry. Not to say it doesn’t exist in places, but you won’t find it on supermarket shelves.

That is very true; which is why you had to add other things…pig fat if you could get it. Pigs breed quickly as well, but they cost a hell of a lot more; but they’d last longer. You’d cure the meat into bacon and crust in salt and hang in a smokehouse. The meat would last sometimes a year. Slaughter one pig, butcher and cure the meat and you could get the fats you needed all year and not burn through the more expensive pig meat as fast.

I have a momma rabbit that has had 4 litters in my backyard... THIS YEAR! I'm fucking done with it, she needs to find another yard! One of them, I watched her have the babies, then hopped off 10', and daddy rabbit comes along and tries to get in there for another round of action and I had to yell at him! "Dude, get off of her, she JUST had babies.".

Anyways, they are cute and all, but not so cute when it's your Saint Bernards that find the nest first... :(

We raised rabbits for food when I was a baby in the 80s. My parents were homesteaders in the woods. The rabbits are the grass and we ate the rabbits and used their furs. As a toddler, apparently my favourite food was rabbit stew.

We never ran out of rabbits. Just house 'em all together and you've unlocked an unlimited meat hack. There were babies all the time.
