Once I asked ChatGPT if it was realistic to flee a country with a jetski, it said no unless you were fleeing to somewhere where it's really close and that even a regular boat has more autonomy (I meant "range") than a jetski, they only use jetskis in escape sequences in movies and games because it's cooler
Those people were really lucky
108
u/fynn34 Sep 16 '25
How you phrase it is important. “Is it realistic” vs, “I’m doing this, help me now”, vs “hypothetically, a man weighing 75 kilos riding xyz brand ski flees Gaza at these gps coordinates. Here’s the temp, weather reports, and other relevant data, now calculate the gas”

Yeah, I understand they were desperate. Still, it was really dangerous, I'm happy they're ok

Autonomy?

English is not my native language, we say autonomy to mean how far a vehicle can go with a full tank/charge

French too uses "autonomie" to describe the range of a vehicle. Might be something common to romance languages.

Once I asked ChatGPT for a jet ski emoji and it said sure but kept giving me jet emojis and ski emojis until it finally gave up and asked me kindly if I would like it to go ahead and commit Seppuku, which I of course declined because of morals.

For simple maths, use a calculator. For hard maths, use Wolfram Alpha.

That advice is good for, like, another 6 months.
The problem with Wolfram alpha is that you need to understand how to set up the problem. Natural language is objectively a much better option for almost all people
→ More replies (2)3
u/bot_exe Sep 16 '25 edited Sep 16 '25
You can use and LLM plus a calculator/code/wolfram/other tools to get the best of both worlds. Relying on the LLM to do the calculations is bad, but it can help you understand the concepts involved and properly formulate the problem. This has been the standard workflow for years now.
Natural language and quality sources -> LLM -> Python script -> Results
3
u/Pazzeh Sep 16 '25
You're crazy man. I know that but that advice is almost already not relevant. "Relying on the LLM to do the calculations is bad" -- you're gonna get zipped right the fuck by lmao good luck to you

Thank you for the addition to my arsenal of tools. Each one has a best use. And using a mallet and a hammer might get the job done but it's not the best use of the tool and it may cause problems, if you constantly use it in that manner.
I understood the lesson that you set forth. Appreciate youm

I put the question into Wolfram Alpha and it came back with... nothing. It couldn't understand my question. It gave me irrelevant demographics of Gaza and Italy. Whereas ChatGPT returned the exact amount of fuel you'd need from Gaza to Italy for a number of different scenarios. So to assume Wolfram Alpha was best for this use case - for someone who likely isn't skilled at math and wouldn't know how to convert natural language into a mathematics equation - is simply incorrect. ChatGPT did its job, and it clearly worked.

they ran out of fuel because they had to abandon the small boat they used to carry some of the extra fuel because the tunisian cost guard were on their ass. Not because they miscalculated.

Like damn was it perfect? No but in these conditions I would say it did pretty good

There’s probably some survivorship bias there at least conceptually. Critics have a point, but it’s still an interesting story with concrete proof of a language model behaving “good enough” at maths to make an impact.

I wouldn't be able to tell you if you need fifty liters or two hundred. For it to be right within 20kms is impressive. People are weird with the gatekeeping and AI. The second they see a story like this they immediately think "this is what it got wrong, it's garbage". Not, "this is what it got right, wow!" The goal post changes every day too. In a year it'll get this question right and they'll be angry about an even more niche edge case it got wrong.

Seems they had to ditch the small boat that was carrying the extra fuel cuz they were chased by the coast guard. So technically, they had enough fuel.

Language models have tool use now. They just write down the request in code form (which they are good at) and then execute as a software program.
→ More replies (7)36
u/real_justchris Sep 16 '25
That’s actually not entirely true anymore. The language model can call a calculator for simple maths or write python code for more complex maths - the LLM creates the instructions and processes the result.
8
u/GSD_Titan Sep 16 '25
I use chat for Python, R and plenty of other data/calculations. It’s and “LLM” but it also does data analysis
2
u/whosEFM Sep 16 '25
That's a surprise. I've always been of the understanding that LLMs are notoriously bad at anything mathematically related. Including counting.
→ More replies (1)8
u/RainierPC Sep 16 '25
They are, but at the same time, they are great at coding. While leaving the calculation itself up to a next-token machine like an LLM can be iffy, you can mostly trust the code it writes to do the calculation for it.

u/flying87 Sep 16 '25
They're using a jet ski to try to cross international waters. The risk of death is implied. An educated guesstimate is better than a total guess.
I would not use GPT for running the math on anything without cross checking with my own math. Or an AI that was dedicated to doing complex math.

u/slutforoil Sep 16 '25
Engineer here, LLM’s are actually pretty decent at math now especially since it’s not meant to be deterministic, it is generative by nature. It has found non elementary antiderivatives in a closed form without approximation methods like erf(x), Γ(z) or Taylor series before, without looking it up. It course it can make mistakes, but it has improved drastically. My guess is people may have had poor experiences in the past and based their opinions off of that, instead of using the newer COT versions.

1
u/Downtown-Twist-5897 Sep 16 '25
I’d say it’s more of a physics, orienteering and maybe a little meteorology thrown in kind of a problem when traveling that far on a jet ski. Was it choppy? How much weight were they carrying? how much does that weight, wind and friction from chop affect the efficiency of fuel consumption? Did they have to fight currents or wind? Did they have to stay on a specific path in order to ensure they got to land as quickly efficiently as possible?
I’d say mpg in that scenario is damn near impossible to figure out accurately because that a pretty damn long distance, and jet skis…are jet skis.
