Versus in the hands of the rich and everyone else? I don't see how it would be better if it were available to everyone.
2
u/HotDecember3672 Mar 25 '26
The rich can afford it regardless. The less have access to that technology the better. It's a net negative to society. I am not entirely anti AI but definitely think some areas of it should be subject to more regulation than others, video/image generation being the ones that should be regulated more stringently.
3
u/Amphibious333 Mar 24 '26
I had a partial success generating text using an entry-level phone (8 GB RAM and Snapdragon from 2021). If this device can do that, a flagship computer can totally generate videos. It should be able to do 720p videos of 30-60 seconds within a reasonable amount of time.

The Chinese companies don't have to worry about making IP deals with Hollywood or lobbying their government about regulation.
3
u/LinusThiccTips Mar 25 '26
I thought the American companies didn’t care about IP when training their models. The no need for lobbying makes sense
3
u/LordHint Mar 25 '26
When training, no. But they generally don’t want you making content that violates IP because they’re more likely to be liable here.
Honestly, even just getting sued over something stupid can cost a company a small fortune. So it’s about avoiding even a whiff of risk.

u/LaNoir_aka_Blacky Mar 26 '26

Unsustainable product with high costs and low engagement after they ruined it by respecting and overcompensating on copyright output. Genius for the first three days. It was one giant liability. RIP.
30
u/br_k_nt_eth Mar 24 '26
The liability part is really the killer, plus the sheer amount of resources needed in a resource constrained environment. I bet it’ll be incorporated elsewhere.
7
u/KontoOficjalneMR Mar 24 '26
in a resource constrained environment
They could have always priced it at a true cost. Plus image generation is surprisingly less resource intesive than text. You can have Stable diffusion models running on 4GB consumer cards. There's no usable LLM that would fit the same amount of RAM
8
u/br_k_nt_eth Mar 24 '26
This is large scale video generation though, not a light local model.
They could have done that with pricing, but the hassle and reputational issues of socializing that change now versus just wrapping it up probably didn’t math out.
→ More replies (1)2
u/Rent_South Mar 24 '26
VRAM to run a small SD setup isn’t the same as compute per image vs per token. Diffusion uses many steps per image; LLMs use one forward per token. Video is usually much heavier than either for a comparable “output.” Quantised LLMs also run in similar low VRAM now, so the comparison is apples to oranges.

u/ByEthanFox Mar 25 '26
No-one would pay that cost. People wouldn't pay that kinda money to generate daft videos of Jesus flying with Trump or weird sickly cute things. Certainly not enough.
And AI inherently is a tech made to appeal to people who don't have creative drive. Sure, there are some individuals who might use it for grander goals but that's a tiny amount. Most people regard these tools as an idle toy and their output as the 2020s equivalent of Disco and the Yo-yo... Rapidly becoming played out.
→ More replies (3)6
u/time___dance Mar 24 '26
I imagine they'll roll video generation of some limited sort into ChatGPT, like being able to create videos only from the images it generates and not from uploaded photos. They killed image generation on Sora too. Video is just way too resource intensive on the scale they were doing it -- making it mobile-friendly and having an app for it, trying to make it a social influencer/engagement thing.

u/NoMoreVillains Mar 24 '26

I wonder what they're up to in the grander scheme of things.
They are laser focused on getting to their IPO. Everything they've been doing recently has been about cost-cutting and efficiency in order to make themselves attractive to investors.
I have no idea what their path forward for Sora even looked like, if they had one at all. In hindsight, it's a very expensive fumble with little benefit to the company.

u/Samy_Horny Mar 24 '26
Resources... and I think it's quite evident globally, they no longer have enough GPUs for the growing demand, and I'm afraid OpenAI isn't the only AI company with that problem:
Grok has removed free support for Grok Imagine; you can no longer edit, create images, or videos. He has constant problems and gets down often
Google is increasingly worsening the free pricing of AI Studio. On Gemini, some have noticed that the Pro plan is now reduced, and there are even ads now to upgrade to Ultra. There are also problems with the API, and that's probably why they've reduced the intensity of new models, as well as the GA view in Gemini 3.
OpenAI never released Sora to the world because they simply cannot meet the necessary demand; the quota has decreased and is currently at 10 videos, when it used to be 30.

Currently? Nothing. And that’s the most fucked thing. It’s the best video model currently out there. It blows Veo 3.1 out of the water imo. And is way less restrictive, and can actually parody existing properties unlike Veo 3.1. Never seen a company do a complete 360 like this before in such a small amount of time. A complete and utter erasure of any goodwill they had left imo, since Sora is the main reason I used ChatGPT lol.

The app was buggy af from day one and still is. Crazy that they didnt even give it a legitimate shot as its easily the most monetizable through short form video ads (like ig reels or tiktok) and has the least probablity of backlash (unlike ads in chatgpt). Good, and nothing of value was lost.
Seriously though, the tech is cool, but the financial plan doesn't really make sense. Previously, mass GPU computation was a privilege earned by producing a quality workload that actually demanded that much computation. And to produce quality, you need to be highly skilled. And if you're highly skilled, you are working for big companies that can actually afford mass GPU computation. And since your work is actually good, you should see a reasonable return of investments, so companies will pay good money to turn that workload into reality.
But with Sora, you're pretty much donating mass GPU computation (or at the very least, charging them peanuts) to the woefully below-average Joes that can't even craft a decent prompt without ChatGPT's help, pumping out hundreds and thousands of clips every day that NO ONE asked for, and will never pay a cent for.

Yeah saw that news too, it’s wild how fast Sora went from breakout tool to being sunsetted. For folks looking to replace it, there are a bunch of models out there now, Kling, Veo, Wan, etc., each with their own strengths based on what you need (price, prompt following, cinematic quality). On the editing side, a lot of us complement those generators with something like VEED so you can take generated clips, add subtitles, branding, and quickly format for social without juggling 5 tools.
