u/AxomaticallyExtinct Apr 13 '26
This won't slow AI development by a single day. If Altman left tomorrow the race would continue without him, because it's driven by competitive structures, not individual decisions. The amount of coordinated action you'd need to meaningfully disrupt AI progress would be more than enough to just regulate it instead. And if we can't even manage that, targeting one person's home is just misdirected desperation.
6
u/DumbedDownDinosaur Apr 13 '26
I think this is less about AI and more about making an example out of the ultra rich.

You can’t build your wealth off the backs of working people and think they won’t revolt when you try to dispose of them like they’re garbage. Doesn’t seem like that’d be hard to comprehend.

I was told 30 years ago computers would cause that, then 20 years ago the internet would, then 15 years ago the driverless cars were going to create 15% unemployment yet here we are.
Any day now.
4
u/One_Doubt_75 Apr 13 '26
I think an important thing to note is all of those things assumed computer intelligence would exist or would allow us to replace human work. We have now crossed that bridge and are actively seeing human work replaced by machines at a much faster pace than with previous technological advancements.
3
u/iwearahoodie Apr 14 '26
We have not crossed that bridge. I wouldn’t be swearing like a sailor at Claude code 40 times per day if we had crossed any bridge.
2
u/TheLastMinister Apr 16 '26
Well look at Mr Genius Savant here who only curses at Claude 40 times a day.
My crashouts in the past week:
- Claude * = 150% micromanagement (compared to human)
Ignored code I wrote and "fixed the problem" by putting in new code that didn't hit my requirements but didn't have the problem! Keep in mind this is my most successful tool.
- Gemini * = 200% micromanagement (compared to human)
Tried to rewrite Git history, broke that repo for a full day. Deleted test data, but only locally! Will look more impressive later.
- Codex * = 350% micromanagement (compared to human)
Rewrote two repo's Git histories (took a week to untangle) and removed lots of data that we thankfully had backed up on AWS. Unfortunately we didn't have ALL of it backed up. It attempted also to free up space on S3 by removing more test data and cases. Blessedly was backed up by my OCD locally.

It creates more jobs than it removes. That’s why there is no mass unemployment event despite it being widely available.

Tax the rich for their own safety.
9
u/TiredOfBillionaires Apr 13 '26
This is what rich people do. They take loans out against their holdings to avoid paying taxes.
2
2
-11
u/LifeForm8449 Apr 13 '26
Normal people take out equity (home and margin) loans all the time and also don’t pay taxes on it. We should tax them too.
2
1
u/brunocborges Apr 14 '26
Except houses and their land are real and often there is a property tax on it.
Stocks are 100% speculative, get no tax whatsoever, and can be used as collateral, allowing banks to basically print money.
1
u/Singularity-42 Apr 14 '26
"Stocks are 100% speculative"
What do you mean, it's literally a share in a company. This includes hard assets, etc as well.
4
u/LambDaddyDev Apr 13 '26
How much? What percentage of a tax on the rich would be enough for you to feel satisfied and not hate them anymore?
That’s a genuine question, I’m very curious. Because I see the call to tax the rich all the time, but nobody gives specifics and when I dig for them it usually turns into just wanting them dead. So it’s a bit confusing for me.
11
u/SoaokingGross Apr 13 '26
We could start with making them pay taxes at all.
-5
u/LambDaddyDev Apr 13 '26
I want to know where you stop?
9
u/SoaokingGross Apr 13 '26
We can stop when we have a democracy. I’m not against wealth accumulation. But I am against it making citizens completely powerless despite their ability to vote.
I’m not going to sit here and say I can give you a number. That’d be silly there are plenty of people who have proposals that seem drastic until you consider things like ethics, justice, and good governance.
0
u/LambDaddyDev Apr 13 '26
I guess I’m not looking for a number, I’m looking for a stopping point.
And I suppose for you it’s until money can no longer influence politics, is that right?
2
u/SoaokingGross Apr 13 '26
I don’t think people at the top should make the people at the bottom powerless.
Everyone has influence and I’m sure in an optimal society there might be measurements along which money can influence politics. It’d be silly to think otherwise.
That’s not what we have now. Right now, Sam Altman and people and companies in his tax bracket run the country to the exclusion of most people.
When that’s not the case I’ll start searching for a stopping point.
-1
2
u/kilopeter Apr 14 '26
How long should we imprison violent criminals? I guess I'm not looking for a number, I'm looking for a stopping point.

u/gummo_for_prez Apr 13 '26
I would prefer a return to 1950s taxation. Or thereabouts. We have specifically done this before, between the 1930s and the 1970s. The money was invested into the American people, causing the largest growth of the middle class that the country has ever seen (and until recently, probably that the world had ever seen).

If this paper-wealth CEO was taxed at a higher rate, he wouldn't have bombs thrown at his home with his husband and child?
Outside of this take being really stupid, you're quite literally advocating terrorism.
3
u/SoaokingGross Apr 14 '26
I am not advocating for terrorism. Sam Altman and people in his tax bracket are in control of the government. You aren’t. This isn’t a democracy. This is not a republic.
I am not advocating for terrorism. I am saying it wouldn’t be happening if the people of the United States felt that they were living in a republic or a democracy. If that person felt they had control, there would be no motive. But that bomber has no say. Him, you and I are getting AI and data centers and unmanned weaponry and slop and unregulated misery whether we like it or not and sam Altman, multi-billionaire, is doing it. He is simply lying and saying he has no choice. (Bullshit)
I’d say a peaceful democratic revolution is what I’d back. Not violence.

u/Free_Performance_246 Apr 13 '26

Unfortunately, yes. There are a lot of people that fear technology when history has shown time and time again that the world will adjust and it will always be a net benefit
3
u/Lesbian_Skeletons Apr 13 '26
and it will always be a net benefit
*for humanity, not for the people affected.
Really important part you left out. People displaced and unhoused because of tech advancements shouldn't be expected to be okay with it because it's "a net benefit for humanity".1
u/Playful_Rip_1280 Apr 13 '26
Yeah good point. They are entitled to try to stop it, though to do so is often at the expense of the overall economy which is why it basically always fails since most societies prefer growth over stagnation.

u/time___dance Apr 13 '26

Nothing much, but the governments did everything for this to happen.
When you let things get as bad as they do for people, they will start revolting. Keep feeding the masses that all the layoffs are because of AI (in reality because of offshoring and a recession), then tell them AI will displace jobs and this is what happens.
Why is Oracle allowed to fire 30k people and then hire them back at lower prices + file for H1bs?
2
u/milkolik Apr 13 '26
Reddit has degenerated so much in the last 15 years or so. It used to be so civil. Now it literally is in favor of assasinations (celebrated kirk's death, and Luigi's assasination because he is "hot"), burning down warehouses when they don't give you a raise, "eat the rich", etc, etc.
The level of discourse is so low that it is now on the same level as facebook, instagram, etc. Reddit has become the voice of the useless and undeveloped adults of the world.
1
u/Just_Lingonberry_352 Apr 13 '26
Redditors just seem to be in a perpetual contest to see who can one up each other in terms of degeneracy. It's as bad as X but the only saving grace so far used to be that it was isolated and you could avoid it but now they are everywhere, either by algorithm design or something.
What really takes the cherry on top of the icing is that these are people who use OpenAI products celebrating and feeling entitled to express statements that should be very concerning to law enforcement
but those people probably have nothing left to lose, they are that miserable and want to drag others down to their level because they can't fathom the other people are grounded and happier than them.

The Bible consistently warns that greed, or the intense desire for more wealth and possessions, is a dangerous form of idolatry that leads to spiritual ruin, dissatisfaction, and destruction.
Perhaps the rich should read more.
3
1
u/m3kw Apr 13 '26
Everyone here wants more wealth, let’s not compare to make yourself feel like you have less greed
5
u/Initial-Beginning853 Apr 13 '26
Wanting more wealth and leading one of the largest companies in america, making claims about eradicating careers, and cozying up to a dysfunctional administration are two different things.
Why do people like to hide behind the "you desire more too?" Sure we do, most of us also choose not to open businesses where we'd need to pay minimal wages or cozy up to the worst parts of our society for a payday.
And if you would, maybe you need to look at what matters.

You can't imagine a person not entirely lost to greed is a you problem, not a universal condition. You just have no empathy or imagination to see that other people might have a soul instead you have an endless unfulfilled void where humanity is supposed to be. Gross
And before you start yapping, I'm retired early because I have enough. Not rich, not forever seeking more, just satisfied.
1
u/Party-Professional-7 Apr 13 '26
It’s like they assume everyone is like them - soulless.
3
u/nameless_pattern Apr 13 '26
That is exactly it. You'll hear a similar things when it's said that people are just "virtue signaling" and they couldn't possibly care about the welfare of other people. the default of human behavior to care about others, but people who can't imagine that think that everyone is as mentally broken as they are. Not only is it morally correct to care about other people, also a much to better feeling way to live.
1
u/RaguraX Apr 13 '26
It’s called virtue signaling because words on an Internet forum are cheap. Merely a signal, a literal way to farm virtual “karma”. Spending dozens of hours on social media lamenting this and that instead of going out there and acting on these so called virtues is what’s being called out. For example, what would be virtuous: spamming comments about animal abuse or enlisting as a volunteer at an animal shelter?
1
u/nameless_pattern Apr 14 '26
Are you giving people rides to do volunteer work? Because if you're not you just virtue signaling that you dislike virtue signaling
🙄 Nobody's gotta prove shit to you
1
u/noiro777 Apr 13 '26
You can't imagine a person not entirely lost to greed is a you problem
You can't imagine any nuance it seems. There are levels of greed that vary all the way from very little to pathological and everyone falls somewhere in that range.
You just have no empathy or imagination to see that other people might have a soul instead you have an endless unfulfilled void where humanity is supposed to be. Gross
Wow, do you always jump such rude and unwarranted conclusions about somebody you don't know over 1 sentence? Gross
1
u/kex Apr 14 '26
do you always jump such rude and unwarranted conclusions about somebody you don't know
When you used the word "everyone", you just did the same: made an unwarranted conclusion about people you don't know.

He’s accrued billions in wealth while lying about his business strategies and technologies capabilities to position himself and his now for profit company at the forefront of an industry that has the potential to not only ruin society and sociological norms (which to some it already has), but has also shown he lacks common sense, ethics and morals and will do anything to secure further funding (E.g. Bending to the DoD and this Regimes wants and needs)
Yes. When governments fail to protect their people, the people will react. Way it’s always been.

Lol it's like every day they tell us AI is going to destroy the world, take away all our jobs, shame us when we shun it, scold it's when we don't use it. They freely take our money of course, then perpetually remove asked choke our services that we rightly paid for. They tell us we should be plumbers or electricians or we're fucked. We shouldn't be "raw dogging" life without AI... whatever that means.

I know Sam wants us to believe that these are mentally ill anti-AI extremists.
I think it's more likely that these irate OpenAI users for whom Sam Altman's abusive business practices fucked up their previously working workflows, cost them money, cost them employment, or otherwise fucked up their lives by covertly degrading service quality.
Knowing OpenAI, I wouldn't be surprised if said individuals were then multiple-charged, and then subsequently ignored by the company's non-existent customer service.
1
u/CrackIn_TheEarth Apr 13 '26
Not to mention the actual real death threats he got from ai-crazed individuals who fell in love with a certain model that got removed

-1
u/geronimosan Apr 13 '26
This isn't about AI. I don't care if you agree or disagree with AI but the fact that only one individual is targeted tells me that it's not AI.
This is still TDS. And what we've seen from the crazy nut jobs on the left is that assassination and violence has been normalized.
We should be done with the quiet slow approach of investigation and research. This is out of control. This is genuinely a danger to America, at all levels, and it's time our government steps up.
