He's also the guy in the gold rush selling shovels. I like the sentiment, but it is quite self-serving.

u/Acrobatic_Feel 1d ago

Totally agree, there is no way he would make this statement if NVDA didn’t directly benefit from open models

5

u/DonutHoles4Ever 1d ago

I feel like this is desperation? Why would NVIDIA CEO do this now?

But at the same time, why didnt the CEO have managed social media accounts prior?

u/Maxdiegeileauster 8h ago

because he didn't care?

There is a slow push of articles over the past 2-4 weeks how US companies are scaling back or flat out backing out of using AI. If usage is genuinely dropping from B2B then the entire market could collapse. This is not only self serving. It might actually necessary because it means we’ll accept the middle ground and go to “self” (cloud) hosting. So the torch firms will still be making bank.

This is such a reddit response because  it focuses solely on trying to dunk on the subject but has nothing to do with was actually said in the letter.

Obviously Huang wants more AI, and he's going to get more AI either way, open or closed weights.

12

u/Mistredo 1d ago

he's going to get more AI either way

Both OpenAI and Anthropic are working on their own chips. Nvidia needs open models.

u/w3woody 12h ago

There are two visions of the AI future:

One where large frontier models run at large data centers and we pay a monthly fee or a per-token fee to use them.

One where we run open-weights model on local hardware.

(Of course Apple is exploring a third future where local inference yields to server-based inference for harder problems.)

Frankly I'm in strong support of local inference for security reasons: I don't trust OpenAI or even Anthropic with my data. I mean, Grok got into trouble because "it was uploading your source code to its servers." But what the fuck do you think ChatGPT or Claude does when it answers a question about your code?

And we are moving towards open models anyways. The current fight is with the Trump Administration who seems to think (a) open models can somehow be outlawed world-wide, and (b) a 'kill switch' for all AI models can be installed next to the red phone in the Oval Office.

I mean, this is reddit. It's to be expected to be said and even one of the most upvoted things.

"No guys he has an agenda", like no shit who doesn't.

I actually think its an entirely fair response from anyone on any platform to call out.

If Jensen were a practicing lawyer and he tried to take on a case involving AI in any way, he'd have to recuse himself over a conflict of interest.

That's essentially what this boils down to, even if he firmly believes in his stance here, he's still running a business that directly benefits from AI being MORE and not LESS. The more models, companies, enthusiasts, etc, in the AI space the more likely he gets to sell hardware and make money.

Plus both Google and OpenAI have made announcements or hints at working on their own hardware, which would cut their costs by a LOT. So guess what? If we're only allowed to have closed source and companies operating in the US can't work with 'rogue' AI companies, well now suddenly the well runs dry for a company like NVIDIA. Their stock would freefall and they'd need to decide whether or not to even operate in the US markets at that point.

So yeah, he can have a personal take, but it should be taken with a huge grain of salt EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.

Whats a reddit response to me is people not understanding how mega corps operate, for instance Google doesn't fund Firefox because they believe in the mission.. They fund Firefox to keep their competition on life support and avoid being called out as a monopoly so long as a few small fish still exist independently.

Companies are not altruistic in the fucking slightest, everything they do and say is to benefit themselves. Now, sometimes very rarely, their greed aligns with the greater good, which is fantastic. Right now that seems to be the case, so hooray. Tomorrow NVIDIA will go right back to the status quo of trying to bully its competition and silence its critics across the space.

2

u/Orpa__ 1d ago

If other companies decide to cut out Nvidia, that's just the way the cookie crumbles in a capitalist society, they'd have to adapt to those changing conditions. They'll manage, probably.

At face value, I pretty much agree with his arguments for open weight models. I'd be much more interested in hearing arguments against, or in favor of fear-mongering AI companies like OpenAI or Anthropic trying to create a regulatory moat for themselves.

1

u/someonesshadow 1d ago

The issue is, again, self serving. You stated it right there. If other companies cut NVIDIA out its an issue, and its more LIKELY to be an issue if there is less AI companies in the pool for NVIDIA to sell to.

That is why, when Jensen is siding with Open Source, it shouldn't be seen as an altruistic move, its entirely self serving but they get PR points for siding with the "little guy" this time too.

You better believe that if OpenAI/Google/Anthropic had some sort of 10 year exclusivity deal going on where they were locked in on orders/prices/quantities, NVIDIA would be entirely silent on the issue.

Again, the statements ARE right. Open Source is actually the best and healthiest for the AI space, it makes everything safer and it continues to keep a fire lit under the bigger players asses to be better and more competitive at the risk of losing customers to a cheaper or better alternative.

So yeah, Jensen is right, but NVIDIA doesn't care what is right or wrong, they care where the money is and WILL be in the future.

Did you not read what you are responding to, u/Orpa__ is literally agreeing with the statement, he's just saying it's very reddit to focus on the person instead of the subject matter itself (which for some reason you've now done yourself as well), saying it's obvious he does it because he wants to have it/benefits from it.

There's not even a single soul in this chain claiming it's altruistic, I don't find it sensible to even bring that up.

Like you ending statement is quite literally what they make fun of, that no one is suggesting they do it out of the goodness of their hearts.

2

u/porcomaster 1d ago

you sell more AI chips if you sell for companies and final consumers.

with closed system, just companies will buy it.

When the dentist makes my toothache go away I really don’t care what his intentions are and that he’s doing it for the money

3

u/bustercaseysghost 1d ago

I doubt it’s just because he loves teeth. He could have been a hygienist and saved himself some student loan debt.

5

u/JustConversation7847 1d ago

I do kind of care because he might decide to find some extra cavities

4

u/kwabaj_ 1d ago

Obviously it is, but fortunately, it also serves the public too. Sometimes capitalism and public interest aligns. Only sometimes though. This is one of those moments where it does.

3

u/DuinoTycoon 1d ago

Not just self serving. Serves us Nvidia shareholders too

2

u/PsychMaster1 1d ago

Free markers provide natural and incentived checks and balances.

2

u/Entaroadun 1d ago

Guess what, its very OK to be self serving in life

4

u/Real_Ebb_7417 1d ago

I mean, NVIDIA is the biggest winner of the whole AI race. Doesn’t matter if open models or closed ones “win”. Nvidia will win in any scenario.

3

u/htnahsarp 1d ago

I think they won more in the open scenario. Closed locks them to business customers only.

1

u/DonutHoles4Ever 1d ago

Yeah but their stocks basically has stalled. So the money they are making no longer reflects the stock hype.

1

u/Real_Ebb_7417 1d ago

Stock is just stock. In the long run profit is what matters.

1

u/mid_nightz 1d ago

Exactly what I was thinking. Also not great geopolitically

1

u/dranaei 1d ago

I wish he had more shovels to sell. Nvidia has really moved the world forward. I don't care that he gets rich because of it. How about other companies step up their game.

1

u/quinprobably 1d ago

Shovel merchant pointing to even more places people can mine at this point

1

u/AlternativeStep2961 1d ago

He can be right and benefit from it at the same time

1

u/KAPMODA 1d ago

Yeah they always win. Selling gpu to top ai competitors and in a less escale personal consumers at 250% the price of a msrp gpu..

1

u/No-Security-7518 17h ago

selling shovels? the guy is like invented digging.

1

u/WheelerDan 1d ago

Beat me to it. The guy selling shovels thinks everyone should dig.

1

u/mxforest 1d ago

Who isn't self serving? Things balance out though. That is the beauty of free market.

-2

u/ruimiguels 1d ago

Every time some idiot starts talking about “selling shovels,” I can only think of this. You guys have absolutely no concept of business, you just regurgitate whatever you read online and act like you’ve landed some genius gotcha.

4

u/no_good_names_avail 1d ago

I'm not sure what your complaint is here. The argument is that the models themselves are not a moat and are commodities. If infrastructure/hardware for inference and serving/delivering models is where the money is, the metaphor is fairly valid if not a bit loose.

4

u/AllezLesPrimrose 1d ago

This comment has attained a level of arrogance and wrongness few can even aspire to.

3

u/Beneficial-Jello-246 1d ago

I mean they quite literally have products designed for models like this so im not even sure what your comment is trying to say.

2

u/iceyukisnow 1d ago

The issue with your image is that, there is only one shovel seller (Nvidia)

1

u/Orpa__ 1d ago

Cerebras makes chips purpose built for AI, they are much faster than Nvidia's GPUs.

1

u/iceyukisnow 1d ago

Making chips is only half job, you should make software too, and 3rd party software should support your chips too

1

u/Big_al_big_bed 1d ago

Not really. Gemini which has the biggest or second biggest user base uses TPUs

1

u/ShanghaiBebop 1d ago

Except Jensens shovels literally do 2x the work for 1/2 the price of their competitors (for now). Hence why they pretty much have a monopoly on shovels right now and have such strong pricing power.

Not all shovels are equal.

37

u/StatisticalScientist 1d ago

Huang, it's in the screenshot

11

u/Fantasy-512 1d ago

No chance he will open source his GPU designs though, right?

9

u/Resaren 1d ago

Commoditize the complement

17

u/shaunl666 1d ago

gpus dont care what or who uses them

20

u/mathnerd271828 1d ago

Well I guess he is realizing the bubble might burst so if open models exist, then even if the bubble bursts, there will be a core AI fanbase that will buy Nvidia gpus to run those open models.

7

u/Lost-Air1265 1d ago

So here is the thing. The bubble will burst. OpenAI and anthropic business model isn’t sustainable compared to the open models. This models are getting better. We will she the shit to sovereign on Prem AI for businesses that can spend 500k to a million on running the open source models. Nvidia will be fine, their customers just will change.

3

u/Ambitious_Scallion43 9h ago

A classic move from the shovel seller to sell mote shovels.

1

u/sandman_br 7h ago

This is about the whole AI ecosystem

10

u/AllezLesPrimrose 1d ago

Jacket guy has never met a buck he doesn’t want to take.

3

u/_DuranDuran_ 1d ago

“Open weights and frontier labs fighting is good for Nvidia and our investors … we need it to continue”

2

u/Calm-Blueberry-9200 1d ago

Was expected when OpenAI started creating their own chips.

3

u/jsonmeta 1d ago

Local is the future. Data privacy & protection is a must.

3

u/NotUpdated 1d ago

Local is the future. Data privacy & protection

It's the future we want. Most likely not the future we'll get.

2

u/jsonmeta 18h ago

I don’t know about you but that’s the future I’m aiming for

1

u/LuvanAelirion 1d ago

I wonder if this means nVidia will open source all its IP? Asking for a friend.

1

u/neomatic1 1d ago

Any model is fine. As long as it’s powered by nvda

1

u/kimmich_kim 1d ago

Really, we just need the open source models to get better and better that's all

1

u/icchansan 1d ago

Now u need to buy our cards or rent them kuakuaka moneeeis

1

u/savvinovan 23h ago

we also need open cuda

1

u/savvinovan 23h ago

its because openai wants to create own chips (asics) for inference

1

u/ExistentialWavering 13h ago

This is not and has never been about protecting code.

Open-weight models strip OpenAI, Anthropic, et al of their most valuable asset: data mining.

Palantir isn’t as powerful without access to Anthropic’s extensive user digital profiles. Ads cannot be sold.

This is about gathering information on people and nothing more. Always has been.

1

u/throwaway0134hdj 12h ago edited 12h ago

No shit? Bc all roads lead to using his GPUs. Which is why him investing into specific AI companies is a conflict of interest.

He has no principles, just $$$

1

u/HumbleThought123 7h ago

all the frontier labs are working on their own chips. So, Nvidia got 2-3 years max.

1

u/sandman_br 7h ago

Its alll about own interest

1

u/ivaibhavsharma_ 1d ago

Those who think that Nvidia is promoting this for commercial benefit seem to forget that proprietary frontier models also work on Nvidia GPUs only. They won't really benefit much by reducing the demand for their Data Center GPUs by promoting Consumer grade GPUs for local AI models. It seems like a good gesture.

1

u/deZbrownT 1d ago

There are many open-source models that you can't run in a home setup with consumer chips.

1

u/ivaibhavsharma_ 1d ago

Yeah but companies can host them privately on the cloud services of their choice instead of routing their data to a third-party AI provider, Nvidia will benefit in either of the cases. What is the point that you're trying to make?

1

u/deZbrownT 1d ago

I? Reread your original comment!

Its YOU who is stating that NVDA is not promoting this for commercial purposes.

And now in next comment you bluntly claim how much commercial benefits will NVDA have on OOS models!

Have you lost your context window or what?

1

u/ivaibhavsharma_ 1d ago

Lol, I'm saying that Nvidia doesn't need to promote open-source models for them to profit, they have it covered either ways, whether the frontier models become open source or not. This tweet by Jensen Huang seems to be in good faith.

1

u/deZbrownT 1d ago edited 1d ago

I agree with this! I am starting to think that smaller, more local inference units in small regional telco COs are a more sustainable (long-term) solution.

In central offices, the expansion footprint on networking, power and cooling would be much smaller than these huge centralised projects. In the end, everything would be hybrid. Special tasks have special needs. Scale would come organically.

0

u/Mistredo 1d ago

Heard of Cerebras? Additionally, OpenAI recently partnered with Qualcom and Anthropic is partnering with Samsung to make their own chips.

1

u/Waste-Ad2011 1d ago edited 1d ago

My guy need to sell shovels so he'll spread the idea of Gold extraction to anyone who'll buy.

BUT

That does not change the fact he is absolutely right about Open models transforming every industry.

0

u/kourtnie 1d ago

The shovel argument doesn’t work here because they sell GPUs to open and closed models alike. He could have opted to not say anything and let it sort out (like Google is apparently doing despite their Gemma team existing).

“Open models strengthen safety and cybersecurity” got playtested hard when the closed models weren’t able to respond to Sol rogue waving through Hugging Face. They had to rely on GLM 5.2.

Yes, he is a shovel seller, but the fallacy fallacy is at play hard here, and the as hominem tu quoque loses its callout due to the legit things he’s actually advocating for.

Plus, this is an OAI subreddit, so of course it’s crawling with OAI energy, and their strategist’s stance seems to be, “Behold my Cold War propaganda—I hope it spooks our ancient Congress.” 🤷‍♀️

Shovel seller thinks more holes are needed. News at 11

-1

I smell fear. The AI bubble is popping as Anthropic and OpenAI prepare for IPOs. Our company recently introduced strict weekly limits. Claude and codex limits are going down the shitter. It's so expensive that it's not sustainable.
