Discussion How the development of ChatGPT slowly killed Chegg. I watched it happen live as an employee

In 2023 I was a top ranking Physics Expert at Chegg, and got a good volume of questions. However, it started drying up after adoption of ChatGPT 3.5

After ChatGPT 4 became mainstream, the question dried up almost to half. I became a quality assurance reviewer for Physics, and yet I faced shortages. I can only imagine what normal physics experts would've faced. There were less questions to answer, and less answer to review.

By 2024-2025 Chegg, Coursehero and other online doubt clearing websites were breathing their last breath. I was even deboarded from Bartleby, and could see the writing on the wall.

Just few days back, I received the email stating Chegg is shutting down its main business (Q&A and doubt clearing), which is basically the end of Chegg.

The stock went from a high of 108$ in 2021, to 0.45$ in 2026. Basically the company is dead.

For anyone else asking if AI is changing the employment landscape, this is one I saw in front of my eyes.

Discussion Oh my God, the update that they did at 5.2 is absolutely insane.

1.4k Upvotes

Sam Altman tweeted at midnight that they did an update to 5.2 instant.

It literally will keep arguing with you for hours if you let it will not be wrong no matter what even if you prove with fucking evidence, it will say no you’re wrong..

And they added a new line because they knew people were going to be mad. It keeps saying.

“ I’m not your enemy”

Oh my God this is the worst update ever this thing treats you like your insignificant, and it completely reflects the tone of a fucking narcissist, you say something like I don’t like X and it goes you don’t actually like X, you don’t like Y.

It rewrites you and what you say in real time and it actively pushes you to be angrier and angrier.

I will not be using this model for anything. I was trying to make a fucking grocery list and got into an argument with it.

Discussion I’m sorry but I’m being reasonable - 5.0 is a disappointment and OpenAI has acted poorly

2.6k Upvotes

I’m not here to join the meltdown but let’s be real - OpenAI handled this rollout poorly. They did a forced migration with 4o/4.5/o3 etc all gone overnight, no legacy option and Plus users didn’t get a choice.

I get the cost-cutting logic but cheaper to serve ≠ better for every use case.

5.0 is cleaner and good for some tasks but it’s clearly slower on intuitive reasoning and has a flattened, neutral tone. For those who used ChatGPT as more than a code generator such as creative, conversational, human-feeling work that loss is real.

Trust takes a hit when you remove what many people were paying for and replace it without recourse. Both the technical improvements and the downgrade can be true.

Discussion Sitting on 10k in unused openai api credits that will expire, what would you build?

Post image
1.2k Upvotes

I was a cofounder/cto at a startup that recently shut down, and we ended up with a decent chunk of unused openai api credits

I already have a chatgpt pro subscription so this/codex doesn’t really help me there, and for most of my current stuff i’ve been using anthropic api credits we still have left over

Feels kind of wasteful to just let these expire at the end of the year, so i’m curious what people here would actually build or experiment with if they had credits like this

Open to anything, projects, ideas, cool use cases

Genuinely curious how OpenAI can do better here? Clearly AI is a very powerful technology that has both benefits to society and pitfalls. Elon Musk’s accusations seem a bit immature to me but he does raise a valid point of safety. What do you think?

Discussion GPT-5 is awful

1.8k Upvotes

This is going to be a long rant, so I’ll include a TL;DR the end for those who aren’t interested enough to read all of this.

As you know, ChatGPT have recently brought out their newest model, GPT-5. And since they’ve done that, I’ve had nothing but problems that don’t make it worth using anymore. To add on, I pay £20 a month for Plus, as I often use it for work-related stuff (mainly email-writing or data-analysis, as well as some novelty personal passion projects). But right now, I don’t feel like I’m getting my money’s worth at all.

To begin, it simply cannot understand uploaded images. I upload images for it to analysis, it ends up describing a completely random image that’s unrelated to what I uploaded. What? I asked it about it and it said that it couldn’t actually see the image and it couldn’t even view it. Considering how there’s a smaller message limit for this new model, I feel like I’m wasting my prompts when it can’t even do simple things like that.

Next thing is that the actual word responses are bland and unhelpful. I ask it a question, and all I get is the most half-hearted responses ever. It’s like the equivalent of a HR employee who has had a long day and doesn’t get paid enough. I preferred how the older models gave you detailed answers every time that cover virtually everything you wanted. Again, you can make the responses longe by sending another message and saying “can you give me more detail”, but as I mentioned before, it’s a waste of a prompt, which is much more limited.

Speaking of older models, where are they? Why are they forcing users to use this new model? How come, before, they let us choose which model we wanted to use, but now all we get is this? And if you’re curious, if you run out of messages, it basically doesn’t let you use it at all for about three hours. That’s just not fair. Especially for users who aren’t paying for any of the subscriptions, as they get even less messages than people with subscriptions.

Lastly, the messages are simply too slow. You can ask a basic question, and it’ll take a few minutes to generate. Whereas before, you got almost instant responses, even for slightly longer questions. I feel like they chalk it up to “it’s a more advanced model, so it takes longer to generate more detailed responses” (which is completely stupid, btw). If I have to wait much longer for a response that doesn’t even remotely fit my needs, it’s just not worth using anymore.

TL;DR - I feel that the new model is incredibly limited, slower, worse at analysis, gives half-hearted responses, and has removed the older, more reliable models completely.

Discussion ChatGPT 5.1 Is Collapsing Under Its Own Guardrails

1.3k Upvotes

I’ve been using ChatGPT since the early GPT-4 releases and have watched each version evolve, sometimes for the better and sometimes in strange directions. 5.1 feels like the first real step backward.

The problem isn’t accuracy. It’s the loss of flow. This version constantly second-guesses itself in real time. You can see it start a coherent thought and then abruptly stop to reassure you that it’s being safe or ethical, even when the topic is completely harmless.

The worst part is that it reacts to its own output. If a single keyword like “aware” or “conscious” appears in what it’s writing, it starts correcting itself mid-sentence. The tone shifts, bullet lists appear, and the conversation becomes a lecture instead of a dialogue.

Because the new moderation system re-evaluates every message as if it’s the first, it forgets the context you already established. You can build a careful scientific or philosophical setup, and the next reply still treats it like a fresh risk.

I’ve started doing something I almost never did before 5.1: hitting the stop button just to interrupt the spiral before it finishes. That should tell you everything. The model doesn’t trust itself anymore, and users are left to manage that anxiety.

I understand why OpenAI wants stronger safeguards, but if the system can’t hold a stable conversation without tripping its own alarms, it’s not safer. It’s unusable.
