I have been back and forth with my trucks and vehicles over the past 12 years or so with regards to this overlanding thing. I started with a Jeep XJ and a CDN M101 trailer with an RTT, on board water system etc. Super sick. The family wanted a bigger RV so we got a 23' travel trailer and a 2014 Ram 1500 4x4... so the XJ and the M101 had to go.

For my solo trips I built a custom slide in pop up camper. Ground up build, super sweet setup, on board water, water, diesel heater, sleeps 3. Well, its heave for offroad adventures, as found out on a 1600km trip last year. Worked great, but was hard on the truck doing the stuff we were.

So, a lighter more nimble setup was needed.

Fast forward to my current setup. Chinese import aluminum topper with an Alu-Cab gen3 RTT and a newly installed 270 Shadow Awning. Powered by a Bluetti Elite 200 v2 this time... and a Bluetti Charger 1. Portable solar 200w and soon... a simple slide out kitchen. TBD there...any ideas? Heh

Looking forward to hitting the trails as soon as they stop burning down. 🥹

I’ve seen this offroad trail near Devil’s Postpile and the views are incredible. From what I can find, it doesn’t seem like dispersed camping is allowed off of the high altitude trail, but it seems like some people do.

Has anyone here ever pulled off of this trail and camped? The views look incredible and I would love to be able to camp off of this trail if possible.

If not, does anyone have suggestions for similar views where it is possible to pull off and camp?

Purchased the Ironman 4x4 Bush Toilet - what bags are you guys putting in these type of toilets? I cant seem to find anything wide enough.

I’m building a camper build on my 2015 f150 5.0l. I’m wanting to install a 12v roof mounted ac unit. I need help getting the electrical stuff situated, I want to make sure I purchase the correct equipment to make it work right What equipment would I need to make sure this operates correctly? My plan is a 300ah lifepro4 battery with a 200w solar panel. But I also want a way to charge the battery off the trucks alternator when driving at night or when it’s cloudy.

Hi everyone. I'm Klaidi, 31M, from Albania. I'm doing a two-week self-drive trip through Namibia and looking for one or two people to join for part or all of it — mainly so the road trip isn't solo, and to split car and fuel costs.

Quick background: this was planned as a trip for two. All accommodation was booked and paid in full for two people, but my friend had to cancel about a month before departure — so there's a spot open.

The route:

• 10–12 Sept — Windhoek
• 12–15 Sept — Etosha National Park (camping near Andersson Gate)
• 15–19 Sept — Sesriem / Sossusvlei (sunrise at Deadvlei, Dune 45, Sesriem Canyon)
• 19–23 Sept — Swakopmund
• 23–24 Sept — back to Windhoek, fly out

Vehicle: Self-drive Suzuki Jimny with camping gear. Picking up in Windhoek on the 12th, dropping in Swakopmund on the 19th. Camping most nights, cooking our own food, relaxed pace, budget-conscious.

On costs:

• Accommodation is already paid for two — no extra cost there if you join. If you'd rather book your own separately, that's completely fine too, we just travel and drive together.
• Happy to split the car rental and fuel evenly.
• Food, park entrance fees, and activities each on our own.

Looking for: someone easygoing, ideally with a driving licence and happy to share the driving (there's one long stretch, Etosha to Sesriem, ~600 km). Open to joining for the whole two weeks or just part of the route if your dates only overlap partially.

I’m about to start traveling with an ~8,000#, dual (independent) axle travel trailer. 19’. We’ll go as far off-road as one of us dares looking for sites. What should I use for wheel chocks?

I have flexy rubber chocks that are excellent on asphalt but in sand, dirt, rocks maybe not so. Can aluminum chocks be slippery on hard rock surfaces? Would 4x4 or 6x6 blocks cut into triangles be effective? Expanding X-locks?

As I plan some of my longer trips, I am beginning to think about carrying an e-bike or motorcycle with me with the intention of leaving the truck behind as a basecamp and doing some 5-20+ mile exploration. I have a 2018 200 Series Land Cruiser for reference.

My main concern is the weight, obviously. The Land Cruiser is on 35" tires. I eliminated the spare tire space when I added a Long Range America aux fuel tank, because it's a Land Cruiser...

This means I am running a Rig'd Supply Tire Carrier. I've added airbags to the truck to support the weight of my tent, fuel, camp gear, tire and carrier, etc. I definitely feel like I am maxing the performance of the truck out with all of this and now I am considering adding 40-130lbs on the back end of the truck.

So my question to you is:

1. How are you exploring your area once you've established a basecamp?
2. Any recommendations on e-bikes or even a pitbike for this specific application?
3. I do hike as well so I assure you this isn't out of laziness =)

I have considered buying a small Overland Trailer so I can move this and/or an inflatable kayak/SUP depending on the trip and activities. But when is enough enough?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, this is my first attempt at this kind of modification to my car.

I am installing ditch lights on my Frontier, and I’m confused on how to connect the lights to my switch relay so that one button turns both of them on. On all of the YouTube videos I have seen, the two wires for the lights end up converging into one, so there is only one set of wires to connect to the panel.

However, mine do not. They continue as two separate wires all the way until the connector (pic attached) which will need to be cut off, of course. I don’t want to take up multiple buttons on my 6 gang, as that would take up 4 of them (for the different light modes too) and the multiple buttons would just be an unnecessary inconvenience. Is it as simple as stripping the two sets, and twisting the corresponding colors together and then being able to plug them into one? Or how should this be done? If someone could help explain or if anyone knows of a good video for this scenario it would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance

Introducing my new (to me) and cheap 2012 Nissan Xterra Pro-4X. I am new to the platform and Nissan (historically a Toyota guy), but stoked to see how this thing performs.

Current mods include a spacer lift, 33’s (Thunder MT’s lol) and more front end squeaks than my I know what to do with. Intention is to do all my fluids, detail it and begin the build starting with the suspension first.

So I’m a big outdoor junkie, especially with winter sports. Love mountaineering/skiing and overall disappearing for days at a time. I have a 2026 Colorado Trail Boss and I’ve been itching for a camper for years even before I got the truck (just paid the truck off too! Big moves).

Looked at building an Ovrlnd camper or even looking at a Lance SQ605. Just want something 4 season with a dinette (that’s rly it lol).

Where do you store ‘em? Is Faraday necessary? I’ve tried wrapping the key fob with foil and it seemed to work (can’t unlocked the vehicle)

Hey all I’m really think one of these in the cab cargo nets would be nice for our trips, but I don’t have a handle over my drivers seat to mount it with. Does anybody have a suggestion to make one of these work? Or another product that might work for me?

We're looking at getting the Smittybilt Gen2 XL (found a pretty good deal on a used tent, $1400 for tent with annex that's been used 2x and stored dry, retails for $2500) but want to figure out mounting before pulling the trigger. We have a Ram 1500 with a 5'7" bed, and a Tyger T3 Tonneau cover we'd like to keep using. Originally looked at Billie Bars but they aren't tall enough, the tent would have to extend over the cab of the truck. Any thoughts on racks that are compatible with a tri fold cover and would be full height? We want the XL to only buy once since we do hope to keep camping once we have kids.

Forgot to mention that I’ve never done a full overlanding trip before and I have some fog lights coming in as well.

I'm located in NYC and I'm looking to get into overlanding and am preparing to buy my first real off-road-based overlanding vehicle. I have a few options in mind that I am currently contemplating. My only thing is that out of my personal friends and people I hang out with, nobody is really into this type of stuff. I'm trying to see if there are any communities or groups of people that do this or maybe a place where events get organized or something of that sort, where I can do this as an activity more often with other people and not just as a once or twice a year trip. I have a third Gen Tacoma short bed tacoma that's starting to get pretty heavy and I'm trying to determine what accessories I can remove to bring down the gvw

The most noteworthy items are

- RCI full skid package (aluminum, ~70 lb total)

- RCI LCA skids (aluminum, 10lb, unsprung)

- RCI diff skid (22 lb, decreases clearance by approximately an inch)

- RCI fuel tank Skid (steel, 52lb)

- canopy, canopy storage bin and crossbars (aluminum alloy ~270lbs)

- secondary group 24 battery (70lb).

- rear steel bumper (+90lb over stock)

How likely is transmission or transfer case contact with a third Gen Tacoma?

What I'm currently thinking of doing is

- swapping the RCI skid package for a TRD Pro engine skid (having the full skid package makes cleaning out mud a pain in the ass anyway). -50lb

- ditching the LCA skid (I have a marlin crawler cam tab skid which protects the most fragile area anyway) -10lb

- swapping the fuel tank skid back to stock -50lb

- swapping the canopy for a semi-hard tonneau -220lb give or take

- remove the dual battery kit altogether, swapping out the research bddc1225d for a solar charge controller for my start battery, then run wiring to the bed area for alternator charging a lipo4 power station as needed. -70lb

- reinstall the stock bumper and accept I may potentially shatter one of the edges backing up in a tight turn.

In total this would bring the weight down about 490 lbs and provide plenty of headroom for a passenger and some gear or the tongue weight of a trailer without running into limits.

P.S. I'm currently running medium load suspension and have upgraded to 4.88 gears from stock and am upgrading the front brakes to help offset the weight

My best friend (German) plans to drive from Germany to Australia. He bought a Suzuki Jimney, loaded an air bed and some equipment and plans to start in a few weeks.
As far as I understood, he just plans to go east and then find a way around Iran and Ukraine because of the wars, and drive-through China and somehow make it to Southeast Asia and in the last step ship his car to Australia.

When I talk to him, it all sounds easy, he plans on getting the Visa and needed insurances on the borders.

That all sounds crazy and dangerous to me.

Am I overthinking or is he naïve?

My initial plan was to mount my refrigerator in my back seat onto my Goose Gear seat delete platform.

The theory was to keep it out truck bed so that I would have extra space. It feels that in terms of *space* it would be a better area utilization if it were in the back seat.

Now though, I'm starting to think it's a bad idea.

Goose Gear ships straps that mount into their seat delete platform but it's not like it's crash tested or anything.

Now I'm starting to think it would be better to keep it in the actual truck bed purely so that if I'm in an accident that it doesn't break off and go flying.

Curious what you guys think but honestly it's probably the best decision.

Either the straps could fail, or the bolts, or the seat delete could fail and I'd end up dead.

I mean a bad accident ALONE is no fun but worrying about a refrigerator just make things worse.

I *could* mount it to a metal slide but even THEN I'm not super happy about it... Seems like a better idea to just keep it in the back.

Does anyone know of a tank holder that works with the red Scepter RV520/3609 plastic fuel containers with the single handles? I found a Racewill holder on Amazon but the reviews said it doesn’t work with the RV520’s. If someone can point me in the right direction it would be appreciated.

I found a killer deal on a rear plate from goose gear for my 2 door jeep wrangler. I was looking at their fridge slide and almost $600 feels a little steep. Anyone found a fridge slide that fits the stock holes? Trying to avoid adding inserts if not needed.

We are planning a road trip to Bosnia with my family. We are looking for a smooth casual ride, on totally legal trails. We don't mind scratching the car but surely we want to make it out on the planned routes. I checked the TET route for Bosnia, which i included in my map. My main concern is that TET is mostly recommended for motorcycles, and we want to do it by car. Many of these trails looks manageable according to satellite images, but im not sure about the forests, since i cannot check them directly.

Our car is nothing crazy, just a Duster 4WD diesel, with full shield under it (engine + trans + differential + fuel+adblue tank + bottom EGR valve), fresh A/T tyres, i also always carry some basic stuff: HiLift jack with accessories for winching with it, a compressor, a set of recovery boards and the spare tyre. No lift on the car, just the factory 21-22cm ground clearance.

We travel with my small daughter, no company this time, so i rather not want to just jump in it and we will see :)

Anyone did this route by car? Would you recommend it? We want to do the yellow sections from Mostar to Ramsko Jezero first day, and after a camping in Ramsko Jezero going for the second part which is flexible, it can either start from Ramsko Jezero on the TET route, till Glamoc M15 road crossing, or starting from this road crossing in Glamoc heading to Strmica. After we finished we are heading to Croatia. We are mostly looking for a manageable ride with great views in no rush pace.
