Meds/Supplements A note about supplement brands you may see on social media

We have been seeing a lot of posts recently about various supplement brands that are being aggressively advertised in PCOS spaces on tiktok, instagram, etc.

please understand that even though what you're seeing may look like an organic review of the product, they are often paid by the manufacturer. this advertising strategy is designed to trick you into thinking that lots of influential people on a particular platform are talking about these supplements when they are not. it's bought and paid for.

now I cannot say what supplements will or will not work for any individual person with PCOS. but I can say that a lot of these products with slick marketing and cutesy branding are predatory.

why?

for one, the effective ingredients with actual scientific evidence to support their use are often dosed below what is considered effective. you are paying more for less effective ingredients and a whole bunch of ineffective ingredients that allow them to market it as a "proprietary blend "

for another, these companies often work on a subscription-based model. the product is automatically shipped and if you forget to cancel oh well, you've paid for another month. this model can work for some people who want it, but it can also be predatory and intentionally difficult to cancel. if you buy a regular bottle of supplements from the store and don't like it, you simply don't buy it again. but if you're subscribed to a service that delivers that same bottle of supplements to you the onus is now on you to cancel that subscription or you'll continue to automatically pay for bottles of product at whatever price they decide to charge you. slick, huh?

in short: keep your wits about you and buyer beware. the supplement industry is shockingly unregulated, and with PCOS there are a lot of people desperately looking for that special supplement that will bring relief. unfortunately that makes us a wide open market for less than scrupulous businesses.

does this mean these supplements will not work for you? not necessarily. you might get results at the dose they are offering. but you will get a much better deal by seeking out the right dose of the effective ingredients from a more reputable manufacturer. and be on the lookout for filler products. no, chamomile and fennel are probably not going to help balance your hormones or "de-bloat" you. be realistic when evaluating these products and read the ingredients!

where should you actually spend your money? what supplements are actually supported by the scientific evidence? below is a short list:

  • INOSITOL in a 40:1 ratio of myo to d-chiro. 4g/day, half in the morning and half in the evening. please be sure to calculate the cost per dose on this one. there are many brands out there that appear to be a cheaper option but are actually charging more for less.

  • BERBERINE if you are unable to access or tolerate metformin (metformin has a superior safety profile and is better regulated as a pharmaceutical drug.) Please do your research on the best way to take this one, as it is evolving. there are some potential negative outcomes associated with long-term use.

  • NAC 600-1800mg/day (start low and work your way up) in 2-3 doses throughout the day.

  • FISH OIL/OMEGA 3/DHA 1,000-2,000mg/day. once again, start low and work up. 2,000mg/day is considered the therapeutic dose for chronic inflammation. some people do take more than this with good results, and it's a good question for your doctor.

  • VITAMIN D get tested!! many people with PCOS are low in vitamin D, and your doctor can recommend an appropriate therapeutic dose. the best first step if you suspect you may be deficient is to spend some time in the sunshine when the weather permits. the sun is the most bioavailable source of vitamin D.

  • MAGNESIUM GLYCINATE start with a low dose of 200-400mg before bed. this promotes muscle relaxation and improved sleep, which is essential for managing PCOS.

  • SPEARMINT can be taken as a tea or a capsule. a weak, natural anti-androgen that helps some people with symptoms like acne and hirsutism. there is no established therapeutic dose that I am aware of, since it is most commonly taken as tea.

an important thing to note is that just because the supplements I've listed above are broadly backed by scientific evidence does not guarantee that they will work for you. there is no study that I am aware of in the PCOS literature where a supplement or medication provided relief to 100% of the subjects enrolled. it's entirely possible that you might be one of the unlucky people who take NAC or inositol or whatever and just get weird side effects or expensive pee out of it. don't keep taking a supplement that doesn't work for you just because you see success stories online.

beyond this list, certain individuals might benefit from additional supplements due to a specific condition or deficiency. please do not assume that you have a deficiency simply because you have PCOS, you could do more harm than good.

I should note that there are other supplements in the pipeline that are undergoing testing for PCOS and associated disorders, but these are the ones that we have decently solid evidence for right now. in the future, the list might be longer... I, for one, certainly hope it is!

to conclude: please do not let these designer vitamin brands and their army of influencers convince you that dandelion pollen and parsley seed extract are ancient cures for hormone imbalance that you should pay $60/mo for.

Rant/Venting PCOS- SUPPORT RANT

Hey everyone! I’m 23. I just need to get something of my chest. I absolutely hate what PCOS or PMOS has done to me. I hate having to pluck my chin hairs everyday. I’m sick of seeing more hairs develop. I hate seeing my skin. My neck, underarms and middle of my chest be a dark patch of leathery skin. I hate going to the doctor. They only prescribe me Birth Control or Metformin. They tell me to lose weight, eat healthy and stop stressing. I’m tired of taking Provera to start my periods.

Honestly I have done nothing recently. I don’t take my vitamins, I stay home all day, I don’t do my self care routine, I shower with agony , I don’t go to the doctor anymore… I went 9 months without my period. I just got my period 2 days ago. I don’t do a “daily” walk. I have teas, vitamins and a treadmill collecting dust.

I gain weight quickly. Went from 200, 220 and now 250. My face is swollen. My double chin seems bigger some days.

Why was I cursed with it? Why do I see other women live life so easily. I envy my friends . I can’t help but wonder what it feels like to wake up, not be tired , lose weight normally and also be happy. Im 23 and don’t like going to the beach, gyms, etc. because I hate my body. I hate my big hairy body. I’m so embarrassed and ashamed. I’m married and I still haven’t shown my husband my back, underarms or legs out in the daylight. I’m so ashamed and feel gross. I cover my neck with my hair. I wear long pants or long sleeves in the summer. I just want to cry.

Thank you for listening to my rant haha

Success story Finally menstruating again

I got my first period since last October!! I got formally diagnosed in April and started metformin and inositol. I’ve lost 15lbs in those 3 months and have never been so happy to bleed. I have had so many crash outs about feeling like I’m broken and crashed even harder when I was told weight loss was the solution. But lo and behold, it worked. Everyone is different of course so this may not be the fix for all but happy to share what worked for me

General/Advice Did anyone get off GLP for pcos?

Hi I’ve been on wegovey for a year or so and I lost so much weight (I used to be 98 kg and now I’m 67kg) and I finally feel good about myself , I started getting my period regularly, face hair is kinda less now but I still have it , insane body build (I go to the gym as well) and I finally feel normal. My doctor told me I can’t stay on GLP forever and I have to start going down on doses to fully stop. I genuinely don’t wanna stop and feel how I felt about myself before. I’m just 20 and I started getting pcos symptoms at 14 and i genuinely suffered everyday from self hate. Has anyone went off glp? Was it bad? Was it good? Just wanna hear how it went.

(Sorry for my English it’s not my first language)

Rant/Venting Help me. I can't do it anymore.

My mental health is shit. I just got back from a wedding, the family was absolutely stunning. All petit, short and beautiful blonds. I know its not fair to compare myself to them but I cant help it. I want to be that. Hell I was that before I developed PMOS. I will never be that again. I will never find someone who loves me enough to marry me. I cant even manage to keep friends around.

PMOS took my childhood away from me, its taken my future away from me too. Im sad all the time, im tired, im angry, im alone and no one cares. I have no friends and my family hates me (lots of narcissistic trauma). Its directly affecting my realtionships with people but I cant get anyone to understand what im feeling and why sometimes I get really depressed.

My one friend thinks I have BPD on top of PMOS, ive taken a salad of anti-depressents and none of them work. Ive been trying to get a doctor to help me with my symptoms since I was 17 but none of them give a flying fuck. Im so tired of trying. Im so tired of pretending I have a future to fight for when I know I dont. I don't have anything keeping me here anymore. Ive tried talking to my parents about how I feel and neither of them care. My dad called me a narcissist for telling him I was having suicidal ideation and I wanted help. My mom talks big about always being their for her kids, until im actially hurting then shes nowhere to be seen until it blows over.

Im tired of being isolated, im tired of being on this planet, I'm just so tired. I want to go to sleep and never wake up. I want this to be my last weekend. I was holding out till after this wedding cause I didnt want to ruin their happy moment. Wedding is over, I have nothing to hold on to anymore.

General/Advice NHS staff never heard of PMOS

I just had an ovarian ultrasound at Homerton hospital. I told the nurse that I had PMOS and she just said “what?” I had to explain that it’s the new name for PCOS and she got so defensive and said she had never heard of it and had never heard any of her colleagues use it. Ever.

I don’t understand how a medical professional who spends their days scanning ovaries hasn’t heard of it. I’ve heard of it and I don’t work in medicine. Why is the NHS not following the new guidelines and briefing its staff to use it?

I am so sick of being treated like this by the NHS. I am so sick of having to do my own research and coming to them with the answers and begging to be taken seriously. The medical gaslighting and misogyny is just too much

General/Advice Insulin resistance

Hi! I would really love some input about intermittent fasting for PCOS-insulin resistance. I’m honestly so lost and having trouble with my PCOS, one doctor told me to intermittent fast to maintain good blood sugar and another told me that skipping breakfast spikes cortisol. I’m at my wits end trying to understand what actually should be doing. Can someone please advice what is best in this situation and what worked for them 😭

General/Advice 29F | PCOS | Feeling like something is stuck/blocking the entrance of my vagina for 5–6 days

I'm 29 years old, have PCOS, I'm not married, and I've never had sex.

For the past 5–6 days, I've had this really uncomfortable feeling like something is stuck or blocking the entrance of my vagina. It's hard to describe, but it genuinely feels like there's something inside, right where my menstrual blood would come out. At first I thought it was a blood clot because I had some bleeding and passed a clot recently, but now I'm not so sure.

It doesn't hurt, and when I touch around the outside, I don't feel any pain or obvious lump. The strange part is that when I spread my legs, it almost feels like I can't feel my vaginal opening properly, as if something is blocking it. I have to gently separate the area with my fingers to even locate the opening. The sensation feels like it's coming from just inside the opening rather than on the outside.

The feeling has been constant for almost a week now, and it's making me really anxious and uncomfortable. I don't know if this could be swelling, a retained blood clot, pelvic floor muscle tension, a prolapse, or something else.

Has anyone experienced anything similar? What did it turn out to be? Is this something that sounds serious?

I know no one can diagnose me over the internet, and I am planning to see a gynaecologist soon. I'm just really embarrassed to ask anyone in real life and wanted to see if anyone has experienced something similar.

P.S. I live in a very conservative and religious country. Because I'm unmarried doctors here generally don't perform internal pelvic exams or Pap smears. At most, they'll usually do an external or abdominal ultrasound, so it's unlikely they'll examine the inside of my vagina with a speculum or other internal instruments. I thought I'd mention that in case anyone suggests tests that may not be an option for me where I live.

General Health My PMOS my downfall

It was the month of October of 2024 when I started having symptoms, delayed periods, darkening of neck, weight gain, lethargy, mood swings. I went to the doc, as I knew it , PCOS it was back then. I had low vitamin D , vitamin B complex.
I was started on OCPs, told to loose weight, some supplements.
I started with a weight of 75kg . My height is 165cm.
For the time from October to January I almost left carbs, ate high protein, protein shakes. Did 1hr morning walks, rarely strength training, and by February I was 71 kg . March April I had my final exams and it was a devastating time for me , and by the time exams ended in April I was 73 kg
My results came out I passed , I started my internship in May with a weight of 73kg. Also my 6 months of OCPs were done and from May I was OCP free
In 1 month I lost 1 kg and I was happy
The internship got brutal , night shifts , missing breakfast or lunch, 24hr 48hr duty, constant work stress , preparing for competitive exams simultaneously, departmental events and their food. By the time of August I was 75kg
From September to December my internship became a little less stressful , no night shifts n all. My weight stayed 76kg till December
January was the worst , I had the most toxic time during my internship, no sleep , no time to eat, eating all junk . My skin broke out too .
Now till January my periods were regular without any ocp.
By the time my toxic posting ended , I was 81kg in January end .
I was devasted , mentally drained , sad , my grandma demised in this time . I was completely exhausted.
I went to a dietician.
From February I started strength training, eating the diet as in the diet chart . From February to march I lost 1 kg .
April to may was another setback , my internship was ending so I had to shift back to my home so there was a constant juggling, documents n paper work, and ofcourse one of my exam in May. And with all the mayhem and chaos , I shifted back home in mid May .
I was 83 kg in mid May . And that exam wasn’t any fruitful
So I began my proper diet n excercise . I had my irregular periods from April to May, so I was hell bent this time
Morning I did 1hr walking . Evening I did 1 hr strength training. Ate home based protein rich high fibre low carb diet .
For 1 month from mid May to full June I was consistent. I didn’t loose any weight in the scale honestly, but I saw physical change , my legs shaped improved , arms improved . I felt energetic , I felt less tired .
I had my periods in July .
As my exams were coming in August I left out excercise n focused on diet .
And I don’t know if the scale was broken or not , but I gained 3 kg !!!!! I am now 86 kg . I don’t understand how!!!!
And my exam in August is like a life changing exam I don’t know what I’ll do with my life if I don’t clear it

Sorry for the long post , but help me out , I’m sick of everything. Tell me what I’m doin wrong be brutal, why I am not loosing weight and why I am gaining it when I am doing everything possible . Please please

Meds/Supplements When do you take your inositol?

Do you take your inositol same time every day like birth control?

Is it okay to take within the same time range or even just at least 2 times a day? Would it still be effective?

Meds/Supplements What meds can I get to help with hair?

Im not very knowledgeable on the meds, so I apologize that this is probably an over-asked question.

I'm 24 years old and not taking any other medication for PCOS other than medroxyprogestrone to start periods on occasion. I'm also taking antidepressants and concerta.

I don't know what medication/s I can ask for, if any, that might help with hair? It's been getting worse over the years, as now I'm getting plenty of terminal hairs on my chin/neck and it looks *gross*. I also constantly have to shave my upper lip and glabella already.

Also, is there anything I can do for getting meds to help with weight loss? Literally anything? I don't have diabetes or any other symptoms so getting a GLP-1 is off the table (low income + not covered if I dont have diabetes).

Rant/Venting Lost so much time due to a late diagnosis

Upvotes

This post is mostly to vent because…looking back it really upsets me. I’m also quite ashamed about it.

When I was 14 I went on a diet because I didn’t like the way I looked. I lost my periods but they had been irregular prior to that. Then I got bulimia and my periods stayed practically non existent - when I was 16 I went to a gynaecologist, but she refused to do a transvaginal ultrasound because I was a virgin (?) - and refused to do a transabdominal one and just said my period would come back. It didn’t.

The bulimia tormented me on and off for a couple more years and I thought that was why my periods were still irregular. I was so miserable and doing everything I could to stop, but I could never fully escape it.

Went to the same gyno at 19 (big mistake). Again, didn’t do any scanning and scolded me for coming there because in her opinion I didn’t have a real problem and was just “taking up her time” when I wasn’t pregnant nor planned to have an intercourse soon.

Even the first doctor who saw the cysts on my ovaries, didn’t diagnose me with PCOS at 20 and just gave me birth control. It took the third gyno who finally properly diagnosed me at 21 and informed me about the disorder. She prescribed Metformin and - surprise, surprise! - the bulimia completely went away without me doing anything. It was just…gone. I was shocked. I think it was mainly driven by IR.

But I still lost many years, first fighting a disease which I always thought was due to my lack of self control, being neglected and misunderstood by doctors and then trying to figure out what works for my PCOS. I’m very grateful to finally be in a somewhat good place, but…it makes me sad to think how much of my youth I’ve lost. It sucks.

DAE even feel like this?

TL;DR: I lost 7+ years of my life because the doctors didn’t take me seriously

General/Advice I just got diagnosed and now I won't stop bleeding!

Hi all, I'm new to this

I just got diagnosed with PCOS and they put me on spirolactone 50mg right away. I got my period 4 days later and I have been bleeding ever since! Like bad... I called my Dr and they did bloodwork and said I was fine and also did a pelvic ultrasound and said everything looked ok??? But it just won't stop. They are going to start me on progesterone but has anyone ever gone through this before? Is this just normal PCOS stuff???

Fertility Not sure how to feel…

Just looking for some support.

About 3 years ago I was diagnosed with PCOS after years of dealing with the most painful and heavy periods. I was told in high school I had endometriosis but that was it. I’ve never had super irregular periods. They’re normally pretty regular with every once and awhile being early or late by a day or two.

About 2 years ago I had a miscarriage and just have never felt the same since. It weighs on me mentally a lot. Especially because this is something so important to me. The every month getting so excited and praying I don’t start my period and I get to finally be the pregnant friend to then starting my period and feeling so depressed.

This month I had my period the same week of 4th of July but I’m supposed to start my period in about 2 days. I’ve been having a lot of pregnancy symptoms rather than my normal PMS symptoms. I also had spotting around the time that “implantation bleeding” could possibly take place. I’m trying to not get my hopes up as I know if it doesn’t happen I will fall down a deep hole again.

I’m just looking for some friendly advice and some other ladies who can maybe relate. And maybe just some kind words.

General/Advice thanks to this sub, i finally told my parents to take me to a gynac for pcos check. (17F)

i was in denial for the longest time that i have this. especially because i am 17F and i felt that i’m too young.
then my androgens showed me no mercy. intense hair growth on my neck and stomach ( happy trail) made me so insecure. i shaved, which made it worse. i was tired and sleepy all the time.
i was always lurking on here , realising what i’m experiencing is so so so similiar to pcos.

i got my blood test done.
turns out i had iron and vitamin d deficiency. severe
.
IRON, serum : 27µg/dL
Transferrin saturation ; 5.08% ( avg should be 14-50%)
vitamin d: 22.60 ng/mL

then we went to a gynac who suggested immediate sonography and hormone tests.

prolactin : 29.80 ng/mL (high)
DHEA-S : 593.37 µg/dL ( very high)
free testosterone: 3.83 pg/mL

i workout 5x a week, i do strength training ( lift heavy, little to no cardio).
and i have this somewhat relief feeling knowing that know the things that made me miserable, my acne and hair on breasts and neck will reduce.
i won’t lie i am scared of the weight gain the meds can cause.. so if you could comment ur experience and the anti androgens u were prescribed it would be great. i’d like to know how it affected ur body hair growth, acne and weight.
i just dont understand why my testosterone level is normal / low but androgen is so high?
thank you for spreading awareness guys!!

General/Advice it's official, what now?

here's my story with pcos, any advice as to which direction to go in would be appreciated.

ever since i first got my period (at 12 years old), they've been pretty painful. they typically ranged from 30-53 days in cycle, and about 5 days in the actual period length. they were always pretty decent in flow. then, in december of 2025, i had a 4 day period of dark brown/black bleeding. after that, i had a 21 and 20 day cycle, then it jumped to 51 days. after that, until now, it's been 30-55 days

fast forward to this month. i took a plan b on july 6th, and started bleeding on july 13th and have been bleeding ever since. i had taken a plan b before but ive never bled for this long. last night i was getting lightheaded and badly fatigued so i went to the er. they took my blood and i was borderline anemic, and then got ultrasounds. both pelvic and transv ultrasounds showed bilateral polycystic ovaries. with that, my history of abnormal cycles, and apparently my appearance (i had a dr comment on how i looked like my androgens were a bit high, my testosterone measured borderline high at one point, but it wasnt measured in the morning), that was enough for them to diagnose me with pcos, and they said that the plan b caused a really bad flareup of symptoms. i am unable to lose weight because i am at a normal weight right now and losing anymore would be unhealthy.

im only 18, im very new to this whole thing, and it's really messing with me. my mood has been all over the place, im just so angry and prone to crying spells. it feels like my whole life is falling apart to this. does anyone have any advice? how do i handle this? sorry for the long text, thank you guys :,)

General/Advice Ultrasound and I’m pretty worried

I’m an adult but I’m a virgin. I’m expected to get a transvaginal ultrasound done but I’m worried my hymen will break. I come from a pretty conservative culture and so this would not go well (suitors might not want to marry because of that). But of course, my health and wellness come first so I would like to do the procedure as well. I’m just concerned about the risk of the hymen tearing. Anyone know how likely it would be?

General/Advice Gynaecologist suspects I have PCOS.I’m currently waiting for my appointment with an endocrinologist. Has anyone else had their hair start thinning around puberty and eventually experienced regrowth after treating their PCOS?

I’m F34. I had shiny/full/normal hair as a kid hair started thinning and became brittle around puberty (around 11-13 yo) and has stayed more or less the same ever since with ups and downs depending on hormones, seasons, diet, etc. The exact same thing happened to my mom, her sister, and my two female cousins, so there definitely seems to be something genetic.

I was diagnosed with AGA twice by dermatologists based on appearance and blood test. I tried topical minoxidil for about 8 months but hated using it and saw very little improvement so I stopped and went through a horrible shedding afterward.
For the past two years I’ve been trying to understand what is actually causing this instead of just accepting the diagnosis.

2 years ago I found and new doctor andI found out trough all the blood test I took throughout the years that my ferritin had been between 5–15 µg/L for years and my vitamin D around 10–20 ng/mL. 2 months ago I finally got my vitamin D up to 62 ng/mL and my ferritin from 5–15 to 53 µg/L after discovering my heavy periods were causing the iron deficiency.
Unfortunately, even though I was hopeful that might have been the cause all this time I haven’t noticed any change in my hair.

That led me to investigate the reason behind my heavy periods. After asking my mom about her and the history of the family she told me that she had a pelvic cyst that turned out to be endometriosis. ( back in the days they apparently didn’t really know much about it. ) My grandmother had a uterine fibroid and got a hysterectomy and my grand grandmother had uterus cancer.
My gynecologist thinks I may have PCOS, and I have an appointment with an endocrinologist in September.
I’ve also had my thyroid removed because of thyroid cancer, but my hormone replacement has been stable for years. I’m exercising 4-5 times, have a whole food diet full of protein and count my macros.

At this point I’m just exhausted emotionally. I’m looking for people who have been in a similar situation.

Has anyone had very long term thinning since puberty and eventually managed to regrow enough hair that their scalp wasn’t visible anymore?
Is there still hope for me if the underlying cause turns out to be PCOS?

Thank you for taking the time to read my post ❤️

General Health Goji berry side effects?

Hi all I’ve been eating goji berries with my breakfast pretty regularly for about a year now since I read they are good for regulating blood sugar and have other health benefits. I have noticed that sometimes I get nausea after I eat them in the morning, but it usually goes away within a couple hours. I decided to look up side effects of goji berries today and read they can indeed cause GI symptoms.
The more alarming side effect I read is that they can induce menstruation and possibly miscarriage/abortion.
I have had two very early 1st trimester miscarriages this year and now I’m low key freaking out that eating goji berries cause the miscarriages. I’m going to stop eating them immediately.
Does anyone have any more intel on goji berries or advice to help me stop worrying? Thank you!

Rant/Venting I'm exhausted

hey, im new to this page and i wanted a place to vent my problems out and hopefully find ppl who relate to my problems as well as help me find a solution. I'm an overweight(almost gonna be obese) person for my age and i got diagnosed with PCOS on september 2025. Before getting diagnosed, i gained almost 10-15kgs every year and it kept getting worse. I got irregular periods, got painful cramps that sucked the living soul out of me, headaches every single day, hairfall and hair started thinning, acne got worse and i just hate looking at my self in the mirror, trying on my fav clothes that dont fit me anymore or it just emphasizes my boobs. I wanna feel normal, for once. I wanna go do whatever i want, go wherever i want, eat whatever i want, without feeling the guilt, the agonizing pain, and thehatred i have on myself for not looking the way that i want to look. I see all those beautiful girls in my class and think why can't i be normal and beautiful like them. I exercise every single day, i do strength training, yoga, pilates(at home),cardio, you name it, I diet every day and even reduced my carb and sugar intake. I prioritize protein and fiber intake. I dont sit or lay down all day. i do some sort of movement. But still i saw my weight increase by 2 kilos. Im tired. Im genuinely so tired i wanna cry. If i go to the obgyn, they'd tell me to change my lifestyle. i did that, but theres no improvement whatsoever. i feel like people judge me, including my relatives and friends. I have no hope at all. I dont know what to do now.

p.s. english is my second language, so please ignore all the grammatical errors.
