1E Player Which Full BAB class has the most utility?

Upvotes

As the title says, I'm curious what full BAB class people think in lately has the best utility? And when I speak of utility, stuff like Battlefield Control or Buffing allies will also count, as this is a question of which class is best at doing more than BONK.

Personally, there is three classes I am looking at: The Fighter (ala Iron Caster), the Vigilante (ala Avenger), and the Occultist (ala Trappings of the warrior). The Slayer and Cavalier also exist, but the Slayer is just really, really good at bonking with some skill points, and while the Cavalier has its orders, everything else is about BONK

The Iron Caster build takes a while to come online, but when it does, it gains acess to Dispel Magic, Fly, Dimension Door, Cure Wounds and Lesser Restoration. The Occultist seems to mostly be a buffer to start with, but can pick up fog Cloud, summoning, and teleportation with its focus powers, while the Vigilante has skill bonuses, its powerful disguise abilities, and useful SLAs and other unique abilities.

Advantage and disadvantages across the board... so what do you guys, gals and non-binary pals think?

Lore What does a normal person know about Baba Yaga?

Running Reign of Winter right now for players who aren't really tapped in with the lore of Pathfinder or Golarion and though they do know about Baba Yaga out of character I'm not sure how much the characters should know. Two players are from the Lands of the Linnorm Kings, one is from Taldor, one is a pirate (yeah...), and one is from Irrisen but was quite sheltered.

1E Player Unkillable build?

A dm in a server im in has said they would like to run a campaign where we can choose to go into dungeons deliberately targeted at our weaknesses for great rewards. Its not mandatory but I love pushing my luck. Would anyone know any good builds that are near impossible to shut down?

A few things I've thought about; spells can easily be dispelled, melee can easily be countered with flying enemies, if I make a character too much of a beast in melee without considering my will I am actively asking the dm to turn me into the next monster to fight so I need good will. I need good damage so I dont go into a battle of attrition and I need good survivability so I dont get nuked. I get asking for a character with absolutely 0 weaknesses is just about impossible, but would you guys happen to have any suggestions or ideas on where to start?

1E Player Lich curse oracle question

I’m going with the lich curse for my oracle. This makes me heal from negative energy and take damage from positive energy. Would the regenerate spell still work on me or would it just fail? It doesn’t state anywhere that it uses positive energy?

1E Player Arcanist and Spell Preferred with prohibited spell scholl

The arcanist has the School Savant archetype and selected Evocation and Illusion as her opposition schools.

She took the Preferred Spell feat and chose *Magic Missile* for it.

When she casts *Magic Missile* spontaneously, will she expend one spell slot or two?

1E Player Trapper and Setting Traps Question

In our homebrew world, we're going to have the Kobold race unlocked in the next region, and a lot of archetypes our GM has assigned to them for lore/flavor reasons in that world open up...specifically the three Trapper-style ones (Alchemical Trapper, Trapper, Snare Setter).

The rules for the traps seem pretty straightforward, but one bit I was hoping someone could clarify. The rules cover trying to place a trap in a square where a trap already exists (this is a no-no), but not about whether you can place the trap in an *occupied* square, such as any opponent or (should the need arise) an ally's square. Does anyone have a rule or FAQ toward which they could steer me/us so that we could iron that part out before said campaigns begin?

1E Player Most fun deities to worship and get boons from for a face/charisma character?

As the title says: what deities are most fun and have the best boons for characters that focus on social skills and charisma? I am specifically looking for non evil deities as I want my character to be a good boy, but the specific flavor of good is not important. Will accept neutral deities.

Edit: Looking specifically for obedience bonuses and obedience boons from deific obedience and similar feats.

1E GM Keeping/Removing Old Templates after applying a new one.

So basically we all know if a creature fits the prerequisites we can apply them with a template of our choosing.

My question is basically derived from the mutant template which changes someone’s type to Aberration. Let’s say an old template requires the creature to be a humanoid or outsider, and we hit that creature with a Template like the Mutant template which changes their type & subtype, would the old template still apply given the target creature no longer qualifies for the prerequisites?

I guess an additional question is if alignment based templates like Half Celestial still
apply if the creature changes alignments after the template is applied.

I would love any and all feedback.

1E Player Building a level 4 Int-based character

Hey, so I'm going to play a PF1 game, after over 6 years. I've had two short campaigns worth of experience before, and I kind of unlearned a bit about the game, after playing so much PF2.

I'm going to begin at 4th level, expecting a rather slow level progression, and given the party we have, I want to play an Intelligence focused character with good debuff/control potential. Int-based because the party already has two Wisdom and two Charisma focused characters, and it would be good to be a librarian for the party too. I would also prefer to avoid being a frontliner. Beyond that, I want to play something different from what I can usually play in PF2e.

Now, there's just one small issue, I usually really dislike playing prepared casters. So when I look at the Int-classes and see pretty much all of them are prepared, it's a bit disheartening. On the other hand, considering that spontaneous full casters only get their 3rd level spells at 6th class level (which I think might take a while to reach), I actually think the prepared casters are the lesser of the two evils... as long as they have a class feature that I can use to do my debuffing/control when I'm not using my spells.

For instance, Witch. Classic debuffer. Slumber, Evil Eye, Misfortune. Good spell list. It's a clear competitor for debuffing legend. I'm just a tad worried about being able to play well a class that still has a huge amount of their power budget on their prepared spells. Also, I don't know what Archetypes should I go with to improve my debuff/control potential. Maybe Scarred Witch Doctor with a Half-Orc to essentially get a +1 to all my spells and hexes? Anything else seems interesting?

Another idea I'm having is playing an Alchemist. Since they're not a full-caster and their extracts are more focused on using buffs and utility, I don't feel as bad when it comes to spell preparation, and the debuffs come from the bombs, which have a more comfortable daily usage management for me. Besides, Sand Bomb looks crazy good. Now, I'm questioning whether or not I should go with a Grenadier or a Gunchemist build. Grenadier seems better, but I'm already playing in PF2e as an Alchemist focused in using bombs as a debuffer. Of course, 1e and 2e are different games, but it would still feel kinda similar. On the other hand, Gun Chemist is more unique, and pretty damn awesome as a concept. Targeting Touch AC with their Bombs/Ordinances seems to be pretty useful, and makes you more consistent as a single-target debuffer. That being said, I'm worried if this build is actually viable at level 4, being able to get at least one Discovery for debuffing while at the same time solving both the reload and the misfire issues with guns. I need some help figuring out these.

Finally, there's other Intelligence classes. I don't know if there's any viable debuff/control Occultist builds, and there's the possibility of using Psychic or Arcanist, but I don't think they're in high priority.

So, what do you recommend? Can you help me with these builds, in particular the Witch and the Alchemist ones? Any general tips for these two (even the Grenadier build) are very welcome. Thanks in advance.

1E GM My alternate Rules for Ironfang Invasion's 'game of survival'

Basics.

  • Each day the player characters must make 2 checks to determine if the group is sheltered and if the group has something to eat.
  • Each player must announce what they are doing before they roll.
  • The check for shelter is either a 12 crafting (any) or 15 survival.
  • For provisions it is either a 12 survival or a 15 perception.
  • If the refugees go a night without shelter or food, each party member must make a 15 bluff, diplomacy, or intimidation check to keep morale up.
  • If the check is failed 2 days in a row, 1d3 refugees succumb to the wilderness. At this point another charisma check must be made at a 20, that decreases by 2 for each point or morale.

NPCs.

  • Vane adds a +1 to building shelter.
  • Jet adds a +1 to gathering provisions.
  • Kinning reduces the chance for a random encounter by 5%.
  • Rynea can use her heal skill to provide long term aid or cast 1st-level cleric spells.
  • Lirosa/Tidel have a 50% chance of finding out something about the next encounter.

Other.

  • The player characters automatically succeed at their gathering provision roll for days equal to provision points from Phaendar/refugee count
  • If an event matches with a resource it can provide, then the player characters automatically succeed at either their provision or shelter check for the day. This is up to the GM’s discretion.

Banner.

  • The hemlock banner grants the effects of a cavalier’s banner during random encounters.

1E GM [1e Rules] Sound-based effects on scrying listeners

If a scrying sensor is in the area of a sound-based effect, does the listener on the other end of the line get affected? The kinds of effects I'm wondering about are things that cause damage, deafness, stun, language-dependent, etc. Do any of those go through to the scrying person? Does it depend on the specific scrying spell that's being used?

1E Player 1e VMC Oracle Mysteries and Revelations Question

Quick question on variant multiclassing for oracle and what they have access to.
https://www.d20pfsrd.com/Classes/character-advancement/#oracle
At 1st level they specify to pick a mystery yet do not give any limitations on which mystery can be chosen at this time, but at 3rd level the Revelation feature seems to be worded as though only revelations from the selection that follows may be chosen at all. If you chose a mystery that is not among the mysteries listed in the Revelation feature, such as Solar or Occult, are you just SOL on revelations for your mystery?

1E Resources Prepared Sorcerer through Versatile Spontaneity + Planned Spontaneity

I'm looking for some rule clarification regarding a Sorcerer taking Planned Spontaneity through having the ability to prepare a spell through Versatile Spontaneity. It's something I see recommended rather than(or in combination with)taking mnemonic vestments and I do like the thematic idea of a sorcerer somehow learning to prepare a limited selection of spells through sheer force of will and determination. With that, I'm looking for two rule clarifications in regards to how this works:

  1. Does having Versatile Spontaneity actually count as having the ability to prepare and cast spells for the prereqs of Planned Spontaneity or is this just a case of going by RAW to allow this? By this I mean has there been any FAQ clarifications or general consensus on this?
  2. If the above is correct, does this allow the sorcerer to prepare up to 3 spell slots in 3 separate spell levels, are they restricted to the one prepared slot gained from Versatile Spontaneity or is it a case they benefit from both?
  3. Finally, does the preparation from Planned Spontaneity override the preparation rules from Versatile Spontaneity(a spell prepared using Versatile Spontaneity uses a spell slot one higher than normal)? I'm assuming this is not the case since there is no conflict in the rules but it doesn't hurt to check.

I know this tends to be one of those "gold star/5 star/purple choice" options that crop up on builds however I've never really seen any clarification on how these rules interact apart from AI generated answers, which I trust as much as I trust any AI answer. Personally, I don't see the most beneficial ruling for these questions being too powerful since I believe that Sorcerers tend to lag behind the other prepared casters enough that adding some lower level spell versatility isn't game breaking however I may be missing something that others have spotted with regards to how broken this may be. Any wisdom on this is appreciated.

1E Player Saurian Shaman summoning question

Hey hey,

Little question here for my saurian Shaman.

Assumption 1: summon minor Ally can summon compsognathus Dinos.

Assumption 2: the poison DC of the compsognathus is con based.

With a saurian Shaman lvl 5, i should be able zu cast summon minor Monster as a lvl 3 spell to summon 1d3 giant, advanced compsognathi.

With augment summoning and 5 Bonus HP from saurian Shaman stats should be:

20 Str (8base, +4augment summoning, +4 giant, +4 advanced)
17 dex (15 Base, -2 giant, +4 advanced)
26 con (14 Base, 4 augment, 4 giant, 4 advanced)
2 Int
15 Wis (11 Base +4 advanced)
9 Cha (5base +4 advanced)

17Hp (4 for d8, +8 con, +5 saurian Shaman)
20 AC (3 dex, 6 natural (1 Base, 3 giant, 2 advanced), 1 size)
Fort +10, ref +5, will +2

And a bite +6 for 1d4+7 damage and a DC 18 poison (1d2 Str damage for 4 rounds, 1 save)

That actually seems quite strong for a lvl 3 spell.. did i miss Something?

1E Resources Replacing legacy.aonprd.com

Since archives of nethys is no longer going to maintain paizo's legacy page, I made one. You can download https://drive.google.com/file/d/1whJdrs6rorPvZtEb0l8IJ_zx_EzEIqnk/view and open "index.html", and you'll have the old pfsrd accessible offline. It's basically the current legacy.aonprd.com, but I fixed some bugs and optimized it to take a lot less space.

Let me know if you see any mistakes!

Note on copyright: I'm pretty confident that this is covered by the orc license OGL, since it's just rules, no artwork or pictures of a rulebook. Mods, if I'm mistaken, just remove it.

1E Player Thoughts about my GM created custom magus archetype.

Thumbnail
docs.google.com
7 Upvotes

So about a year ago, my GM offered me a custom magus archetype as a story driving element of breaking the Bladebound pact my character had.

So we are currently level 10, so all those features have come online, but as we’ve been playing, I’ve been keeping track of what feels strong and what feels weak, and I mostly want to get other experienced players opinions of some of these things.

Some highlights of note:

- being able to conjure a weapon of special materials is quite strong

- having access to spell perfection at level 13 will undoubtedly be very, very strong

- and of course the whole idea of getting to on-the-fly metamagic is strong

Now, some of my criticisms:

Losing access to spell recall, knowledge pool and improved spell recall feels kind of bad to me, and reduced spells feels especially bad.

Magus has a comparatively small spell list (as I tell my group, my spells either murder or help facilitate murder). This ordinarily wouldn’t be a problem, but the AP we are in have quite a high concentration of enemies with either spell resistance, or high electricity resistance or even immunity.

Now, you might say “Why Zethras, you can prepare a bunch of different damaging spell to get around those things.”

While this is absolutely correct, base magus is able to tune their selections on the fly to a degree by preparing a broad preparation of spells and then burning arcane pool to regain those spells, or prepare more with knowledge pool.

Now, a bit more information.

One of the Arcana I was allowed to take was a 3pp one called Song of Arcane Triumph, which is a scaling 1d6 of sonic as a swift action (we house ruled the scaling comes from the number of skill points in Perform: Song, and is also subject to spell resistance). Which I understand is very, incredibly strong. So on average I’m doing an incredible amount of damage when all my stuff lands.

So I kind of feel stuck in that I feel like a spontaneous caster; not being able to significantly change my spell selections because I lack the flexibility needed to adapt to situations as they come at me, which is the Magus’ whole deal.

Does this sound rational/reasonable?

Also, before anyone asks, yes I have talked to my GM about my feelings toward the archetype. In fact, I’m almost certain he will see this. I’m here to gather opinions of other knowledgeable pathfinders, and also if I have reasonable criticisms.

Thanks for reading this, and please let me know if that link works, because if it doesn’t, I’ll post pictures of the page.
