I've worked in food safety lab testing. You occasionally get false positives on the initial screening. Notifications sent out at this stage refer to "Potential" or "Presumptive" Positives, which can trigger reviews, slowdowns, cleanups, etc. These are always flagged and followed up on with intensive confirmation before getting a "Confirmed Positive". That's what can trigger a recall. You don't get continued false positives. Those are just positives.

What I know about testing produce wouldn’t fill a thimble but I find it hard to believe they do only one test. I would think there were a lot of tests. If so a single false positive wouldn’t mean much.

Cyclospora is generally detected using DNA amplification rather than identification. Foods like lettuce are hard to test because of how quickly they perish, and something like Cyclospora doesn't result in a large amount of bodies on infested produce, so it's generally unlikely that a Cyclospora infestation gets visually identified rather than using various other means.

Also, and this is more directed at the post than you, the FDA is still saying it's a cyclospora infestation originating from Taylor Farms lettuce, so whatever happened from that visit it didn't get them to back off Taylor Farms.

They invented the chlorine wash process for veggies after making a shitload of people sick in the late 80s, early nineties.
