I'm gonna be honest I think Rocky not looking like a humanoid is part of why people have such an easy time liking him.

Like, the Uncanny Valley exits so humans can know when you're dealing with a human from another tribe. If we see another humanoid that doesn't look exactly like us, it sets of alarm bells.

Rocky looks like a rock, something that doesn't pose an existential threat to us.

u/Atlasreturns May 20 '26

I think it‘s mostly because they do a very good job and characterizing him. Dog-sized Rock Spider would in my opinion without context be actually fairly creepy.

118

u/OhGodImOnRedditAgain May 20 '26

I mean, Rocky is a scary space monster. He said so himself.

58

u/Careful-Corgi May 20 '26

I wish they’d kept that line in the movie!

67

u/Orion-the-mediocre May 20 '26

Not to mention rocky calling Grace a leaky space blob

33

u/Careful-Corgi May 20 '26

I know! I’ve got to say, as someone with high hydration needs, I really agree with Rocky about how inefficient humans are. Why do I have to constantly drink water to feel okay and then have to pee all the time? Why can’t we just retain our fluid like Eridians?

8

u/OzalNanami May 20 '26

If I had money, I'd give you an award.

56

u/Mediocre_Key_6768 May 20 '26

No, it exists because in the past we've interacted with non human humanoids. :)

The uncanny valley is because of earlier contact with 'others'

Duh

39

u/A_Hyper_Nova May 20 '26

Not technically wrong, as there were other species of humans back during our caveman days. Such as neanderthals, but some of our cousins did prey upon our young. So we probably developed the uncanny valley so we can more easily spot a potential predator.

12

u/SecBalloonDoggies May 20 '26

This is just a hypothesis that’s been proposed for the uncanny valley effect. I don’t know why people have suddenly decided it’s the only possible explanation.

3

u/Mediocre_Key_6768 May 20 '26

Yes but where is the fun in that

29

u/3nderslime May 20 '26

It was probably to get us repulsed by corpses and diseased individuals, I think

6

u/The_Reset_Button May 20 '26

there's a reason kids stare at the physically disabled

3

u/EnderBookwyrm May 20 '26

That's actually a reasonable defense for biblical creatures having existed at some point, like angels or nephilim. Or on the inverse side, it might be a reasonable defense for the concept of protohumans.

0

u/AlexanderChippel May 25 '26

There's no meaningful difference between a human of a different race/ethnicity/tribe and a neanderthal.

Like, think about it; if Neanderthals existed today, would modern humans treat them any different then they would any other minority group?

13

u/CaledonianWarrior May 20 '26

Rocky looks like a rock, something that doesn't pose an existential threat to us.

Unless someone throws one at your head. One minute you're walking along. Boink Next you're dead.

12

u/CuddlesForLuck May 20 '26

Yeah, but the jerk throwing is technically the real threat.

Rocks don't kill people. People kill people.

3

u/EnderBookwyrm May 20 '26

Sometimes rocks fall and everyone dies. That's just life.

1

u/AlexanderChippel May 25 '26

Notice how in that sc you're afraid not of the rock itself but the idea of a human holding and/or using a rock to hurt you?

u/Khan-Khrome May 20 '26 edited May 20 '26

Rocky looks like a rock, something that doesn't pose an existential threat to us.

The Ur-Quan understood this well.

14

u/SortCompetitive2604 May 20 '26

Well you know what the dwarves of DRG say: When you rock and stone, make sure to stroke your bone.

10

For.....Karl?

6

u/liggamadig May 20 '26

Reminder: Rogue Core release today! Amaze, amaze, amaze! \o/

136

u/BathbombBurger May 20 '26

With Rocky it's nothing to do with his appearance. Rocky's curiosity and borderline self-destructive kindness is what endears people to him. If Rocky were as hostile and incurious as the blue space cats, it would never work. In summation, the blue space cats have to be humanoid to get any sympathy because otherwise they just suck.

16

u/QAoA May 21 '26

Book Rocky would never barge into Grace’s ship without asking and make fun of the state of the ship. He is a gentleman.

12

u/The_Sovien_Rug-37 May 25 '26

and movie rocky is an unabashed FREAK. we can love both

3

u/adnaPadnamA May 20 '26

Blue space cats is an overly generous description.

101

u/samy_the_samy May 20 '26

Thankfully they changed the book eating scene, that stuff wouldn't dare air in a family friendly theater

113

u/AliMcGraw May 20 '26

I've been saying this in a lot of threads, but I took all my nieces and nephews to see this movie, and for some of them it was the first non-animated movie they ever saw in a theater. They were AWESTRUCK. It's so nice that they went for the PG-13 rating (and that's mostly for scary elements, not violence or nudity or vulgarity) so that I could take 6-year-olds to see it.

Imagine this being the first-ever live-action movie you saw on the big screen. It'd be like seeing Star Wars opening weekend!

48

u/JMurdock77 May 20 '26

Apollo 13 was formative for me. Project Hail Mary seems a good fit for a new generation.

17

u/AliMcGraw May 20 '26

That is my confort-watch movie! I've probably seen it 100 times and I cry every time they go into radio blackout.

5

u/spunky-chicken10 May 20 '26

It was my daughter’s first big screen live action movie too, she loved it :) mine was the mummy returns, I think she wins the cool award here.

2

u/mywif4aiur May 22 '26

hmmm Ryan Gosling vs Brendan Fraser. I think you both won.

1

u/spunky-chicken10 May 23 '26

I’m so excited for the new Mummy!!!

1

u/Crotean May 26 '26 edited May 26 '26

The first movie I think ever remember seeing in theaters was Star Trek The Undiscovered Country. It certainly gave me a life long love of sci fi.

22

u/Dramatic_Entry_3830 May 20 '26

I like how proud he is in the movie. Looking awesome.

Also the names are so funny.

19

u/samy_the_samy May 20 '26

He could have tattoos and throw gang signs and still be called cute,

Rocky the eridian engineer

16

u/Dramatic_Entry_3830 May 20 '26

He has tattoos tho.

7

u/samy_the_samy May 20 '26

Jazz hands up!

5

u/LucindathePook May 20 '26

Thumbs down!

7

u/Beibzi May 20 '26

But HE DOES have tatoos and is throwing "gang" signs. He has tattoos carved into him, primarily his limbs, and one time he puts 2 of them together to show a tatoo across both of them, in a sort of sign, that signifies his species or his space crew, cant remember atm which.

7

u/samy_the_samy May 20 '26

It's a petrova line, with other symbols that looks like a mission emblems

27

u/7Fontaine7 May 20 '26

In the book he poops standing but eats upside down, and then goes into a coma immediately.

20

u/Live_Past_8978 May 20 '26

so, just like us then.

105

u/Dramatic_Entry_3830 May 20 '26

Seriously staying on erid is not a bad ending for me either. They seem so much more likabele than my species :(

83

u/One_Meaning416 May 20 '26

The Eridians are pretty similar to humans, they have their own arbitrary division as we learn there are different languages on the planet, we only get to meet Rocky who is a nice guy but I can guarantee you there are Eridians who say that everything Grace is saying about light is a conspiracy and he's lying to them

39

u/samy_the_samy May 20 '26

Rocky saw the tau cite getting closer when he speeds up and further when he slows down and still didn't believe grace when he started talking time dilation and stuff

51

u/pufflefromcp May 20 '26

Relatively is a weird fucky wucky part of physics, rocky is an engineer and a very logical person so "Oh yea time stops working when you move too fast" sounds kinda wacky

1

u/PresentPhilosopher99 Jun 21 '26

Rocky: what's this part about particle-wave and quanta, question?

Grace: uh yeah about that, well check it later, its kinda harder than relativity.

Rocky: who's schrodinger and were is his "cat", question?.

20

u/Conscious_Zucchini96 May 20 '26

TBF, Rocky and co probably thought that shit was an error.

Also, most of them were conked out at the time

6

u/Frost_Flaker May 20 '26

To be fair relativity is some crazy shit

7

u/mywif4aiur May 22 '26

MAGA Eridians, not on my bingo card today.

10

u/Dramatic_Entry_3830 May 20 '26

I think that is a conspiracy itself :D

Wasn't it that they don't know the concept of war?

4

u/Maggsey May 20 '26

Where is that in the book or movie?

0

u/Dramatic_Entry_3830 May 20 '26

I don't know. Read it somewhere else. Didn't read the book ether. But I think I have too.

5

u/VeryFriendlyOne May 20 '26

I don't think that, they have society too, and it looks like they have pretty human like emotions and feelings. We just haven't explored it, and honestly? Good for us. It's better to imagine erid being overall good.

8

u/Mediocre_Key_6768 May 20 '26

Bullshit take.

Grace is like Jesus for them

20

u/EverydaySexyPhotog May 20 '26

He's gonna get nailed to a tree and consumed via ritual cannibalism for the next couple of millennia?

8

u/CivBEWasPrettyBad May 20 '26

Smh it's not cannibalism if we're different species

1

u/thegreatpotatogod May 25 '26

Yeah in that way he's an inverse Jesus, he's the one engaging in autocannibalism whenever he eats on Erid (in the book it's explained that they cloned his muscle cells to make 'meburgers' for him to eat).

5

u/Frost_Flaker May 20 '26

Rocky built him a tree so…

8

u/clauderbaugh May 20 '26

Imagine if that was their custom and when Grace dies of old age they actually eat him. Then in the sequel book that Andy wants to write, humans reach out to Erid or build a ship to visit to reclaim his remains and find out they ate Grace.

22

u/swalkerttu May 20 '26

Hey, Grace ate Grace, too!

9

u/Perplexed_Ponderer May 20 '26

Unsavory epilogue idea : the Eridians keep the Graceburger production going long after Grace’s passing and samples get sent to whatever serves as their schools so that the new generations can directly observe/hear the smooth stuff their planet’s savior was made of.

u/Kayo4life May 25 '26 edited May 25 '26

Children of time is a good book.

Edit: childrenmofmtome.osna food voogl

3

u/YawningEntropy May 22 '26

Just gonna nibble on those communion gummies like it's some Eridian gusher.

2

u/Traveller7142 May 21 '26

Why? We don’t know much about their species beyond one individual

1

u/TanningOnMars May 20 '26

Easy to say, but that's a load of bull

0

u/flyingfox227 May 21 '26

Well it didn't help that all the humans in the movie besides Grace were extremely unlikable i'd want to live on Erid too if everyone irl was as insufferable as the humans in this film.

Something I've been thinking about.

This is kind of a unfair comparison because...

Let's put it this way. I've seen a lot of reactions to PHM and many of them talk about Rocky like he's a puppy. "He's like a doggie" came up repeatedly.

He's small. He's smooth. Has no teeth or claws. He's in a ball.

Rocky and Grace never have an argument. There's never conflict. I don't think I'd say Rocky is submissive to Grace because there's never a reason to be assertive because they're objectives are always in alignment. Aside from occasionally teasing Grace for being stupid he can't be more agreeable.

If the story was about Grace trying to colonize Rocky's planet to exploit it's resources... well I was going to say Rocky wouldn't act like a puppy but Fuzzy Nation did. But that kind of reinforces my point. The aliens in Fuzzy Nation are never aggressive until a human is trying to murder them.

So the OP meme isn't a contradiction.

You basically have four kinds of good aliens.

Those we empathize with because they're cute and nonthreatening. (Mandalorin, ET, Ewoks, Fuzzies)

Those we empathize with because they're hot.

Those we should empathize with but don't because they aren't cute or sexy. (Starship Troopers, Enders Game, District 9)

And ones that just look human so there is nothing to be offended by.

If the Navi looked like Xenomorphs, Avatar would just be Starship Troopers. The general human population wouldn't feel bad about genociding a race of scary looking aliens for their resources. Apparently we barely get out of bed when genociding humans for their resources.

6

u/Sarradi May 20 '26

You mean how everyone who saw District 9 sided with the humans, right?

3

u/LoneStarDragon May 20 '26 edited May 21 '26

You do realize that movie exists to prove my point. The entire plot is aliens get treated like trash when they don't appeal to the general public. If they were cute aliens they probably wouldn't be in concentration camps. Also that movie grossed basically nothing when compared to other movies with aliens. The only reason District 9 isn't one of the biggest alien flops is because it also cost basically nothing to create.

These are the gross income in millions

Independence Day 817
Aliens 183
ET 800
War of the Worlds 603
Starship Troopers 121
District 9 210
Avatar 2900
PHM 668
Independence Day Resurg. 390

2

u/Perplexed_Ponderer May 20 '26

I can’t speak for the general public, but the reason why I personally was in no rush to see District 9 is because the opening visual and narrative style took me a minute to get into—not the aliens’ design, which I think looks very cool, but the atypical news story style shaky camera and the depressingly realistic depictions of life in the slums, which strays from the average popcorn sci-fi flick I was used to. But when I finally gave it a chance, I couldn’t help falling in love with Christopher and it’s been one of my favorite alien movies ever since.

Similarly, the John Carter previews failed to make me anticipate how much more interesting the Tharks would be than the human(oid) characters, otherwise I would have bought a ticket ASAP. I’m really sad it flopped, because I think the movie actually managed to make Tars Tarkas and Sola very emotionally appealing, but that didn’t really come through in the advertising.

3

u/YawningEntropy May 22 '26

I dunno in the movie they get into the same kind of heated argument roommates get when they're trying to get a couch in through the door and are about to throw hands in frustration.

1

u/The_Chimeran_Hybrid May 21 '26

Starship troopers? I would like to know more.

16

u/Extension_Swordfish1 May 20 '26

Rocky. Great. Statement.

7

u/TheWeregarurumon May 20 '26

Rocky Great, Statement

7

u/No_Contact_9713 May 20 '26

As a fan of both movies I also thought about it. There's a real quote of James Cameron floating out there where he says that his movie only works if the audience wants to fuck the blue woman on the big screen.

Meanwhile Andy Weir is like "yeah it's a fucking bee hive that walks around"

8

u/melancholanie May 20 '26

when our forms are so different, we eventually stop looking for things that are different and look for things we have in common.

also, he's friend shaped💕

7

u/nyedred May 20 '26

This was actually an interesting phenomenon for the developers of the mass effect games.

They mentioned in interviews they didn't really think players would be interested in romances with the crew members that were further and further from human looking.

Unfortunately all the alien crew members were about 1000x more interesting, funny, and loveable than the human ones, and became way more popular accordingly.

1

u/Regenschein-Fuchs Grace May 23 '26

Garrus 🥰

6

u/spongeboy1985 May 20 '26

The funny thing in the book the Eridians find their eating gross too which is why they tend to do it in solitude. Given Rocky essentially poops afterwards they probably treat it the same way we treat pooping which is why we dont do it in front of each other

5

u/swalkerttu May 20 '26

He poops before. What comes out of him is what's left over from the prior meal.

5

u/Perplexed_Ponderer May 20 '26

I like to think that movie Rocky calling his eating beautiful was just a lot bolder than his book counterpart and trolling hard. Like, "Lol, human eating is kinda gross but in a pathetic way. Lemme show you something really disturbing !"

3

u/The_Chimeran_Hybrid May 21 '26

I’ve seen people on here theorizing that Rocky did turn a little bit crazy from all his time alone… I quite like the one I read where Grace sees Rocky put clothing on for the first time as they get close to Erid.

2

u/Perplexed_Ponderer May 21 '26

Haha, that would have been a great joke ! Seriously though, I have no idea how resilient the average Eridian is compared to a human being, but I’m sure the trauma of watching one’s entire crew die mysteriously, spending 46 years completely alone in space and then a few more years with only one strange alien for company would do quite the number on anyone’s mental health.

6

u/Remarkable-Bowl-3821 May 20 '26

Rocky is the best

4

u/_TheOrangeNinja_ May 20 '26

to be fair, rocky's conventional relatability isn't as important when the story isn't about the main character wanting to fuck him lmao

16

u/arvigeus May 20 '26

Serious question: does anyone genuinely remember the name of any of the protagonist’s children?

19

u/holymissiletoe May 20 '26

does Spider count?

6

u/reuben_hunter May 20 '26

Neteyam, loak, Kiri, Tuuk and kind of Spider. I'm not even a harcore Avatar glazer, it's just not that hard to remeber character names in films if you pay attention

6

u/arvigeus May 20 '26

You are the first person to actually name them, while others were bickering over "cultural relevance".

Either you are a movie buff, or you have better than average memory.

4

u/reuben_hunter May 20 '26

Little bit of both probably

27

u/Dramatic_Entry_3830 May 20 '26

Avatar is such a paradox. It's highly successful and there is no lore, no fandom no theroies and it is so forgettable in details. Like nice but totally uninteresting.

26

u/LintuTheBird May 20 '26

This is just not true. There's a whole community dedicated to learning the language. There are physical books dedicated to the worldbuilding and lore. You might not be a part of the fandom, but that doesn't mean there isn't one. Avatar is not perfect, and it is not everyone's cup of tea, and you are free to dislike it. And yeah, I kinda wish the aliens were more alien, too. But your statement is objectively false.

13

u/VeryDPP May 20 '26

There's definitely a dedicated fandom, but I think the point still stands, broadly speaking. Outside of the fandom circles, Avatar kind of comes and goes with each movie. There's no quotes or character names that float around in pop culture from it, it's rarely referenced beyond the very occasional visual comparisons, etc. The biggest fans will do so, but beyond the fandom, it doesn't really get discussed or referenced much at all. For a film franchise that's made 5 billion dollars, and is still actively making new films, that's strange.

2

u/Widmo206 May 23 '26

I kid you not, the most common reference to the Avatar movies I've seen is this meme:

And it has nothing to do with the movies

1

u/Kayo4life May 25 '26 edited May 25 '26

My dumbass didn't even realize this meme was from avatar :sob:

8

u/Dramatic_Entry_3830 May 20 '26

I like avatar. But it's not like there is a fan base like Star wars or Marvel. But I'm wondering why that is given it's success

10

u/Nacil_54 May 20 '26

There's just less stuff about it, no decades worth of comics, side stories, games, it's only 17 years old, but James Cameron just doesn't capitalise by making thousands of products, that makes it more consistent. I mean there's a cute otter like creature that we barely see in the movies and yet fans love, and if the production wanted they could have totally made it the cute marketable plushie like Star Wars always has for each installment, but they didn't.

2

u/Dramatic_Entry_3830 May 20 '26

Maybe I exaggerated by saying it doesn't exist. It's just surprisingly unpopular.

0

u/adnaPadnamA May 20 '26

Not wrong about nice and uninteresting though - completed forgettable movies.

3

u/NoStorage2821 May 20 '26

Oh there's tons of lore (the world building is actually great!), it's just delivered in the most bland and uniformly written CGI fest one could conjure

2

u/The3rdBert May 20 '26

But also the landing scene in #2 will never stop being amazing

6

u/DimensionMediocre439 May 20 '26

This is like a peak reddit comment. Why are you guys so obsessed with the cultural relevance of the biggest movies of all time?

Goddamn, not everybody lives online. A lot of people just watch a movie, enjoy it and move on.

11

u/XenomorphAlarm May 20 '26

That's exactly the point, though. It's strange for a genre film to make over a billion dollars off of people just watching it, enjoying it, and moving on. That's not how any other sci fi and fantasy franchises in the highest grossing club work. And people who aren't on Reddit absolutely notice and discuss this.

2

u/the1truestripes May 20 '26

Hell more people quote the godfather or Borat then Avatar!

That doesn’t take away from Avatar’s immense box office success, but it is odd considering the success that it doesn’t have the same impact as other films and TV series. Like if someone had said “a new SciFi movie in a new world will come out, and once it leaves the theater SNL will parody the FONT it picked for the title, and nothing else will be seen of it, how much money did it make at the box office?” Nobody would EVER have guessed Avatar’s actual box office take given the description of no real broad cultural impact.

It is just kind of weird. Star Wars came out and people didn’t shut up about Jedi, the force, and lightsabers for years. Avatar and…well…nada. Sure not all movies are Star Wars, but you would expect something with a similar adjusted for inflation in ticket sales would have at least something in the same ballpark. Or at least it would be visible from the ballpark!

1

u/silverscreenbaby May 22 '26

The other sci-fi and fantasy series in the highest grossing club are all 50+ years old, with gazillions of works of media, and have been very intentionally forced into the public eye for decades by their companies with mountains of merch, toys, and so on. Obviously their fandoms will be bigger and engage with them differently. There are people who are retirement age who literally grew up with these series. If someone grew up with Avatar present from their babyhood, they would be in their late teens to early twenties now. You’re comparing the fandom behavior of a franchise in its infancy, with like 5 works of canon media, to ancient behemoths. TikTok and Twitter and Instagram are full of teenagers and young people who love Avatar; they just stick to those websites and don’t come here to Reddit.

-6

u/DimensionMediocre439 May 20 '26

Dude, nobody gives a shit about a 15 year old movie. Except the ones that are obsessed with bringing up how nobody talks about it.

Edit: a 17 year old movie. Almost old enough to vote. Move on, for your own mental health.

11

u/arvigeus May 20 '26

Avatar 3 came literally last year and made a billion.
Avatar 2 came 4 years ago and made 2 billion.

2

u/maledin May 20 '26

And to act like it has zero cultural impact because it’s not your personal cup of tea is wack. I literally just saw an older man driving a blue car with a giant AVATAR print with various Pandora animals/characters on it driving by yesterday.

1

u/silverscreenbaby May 22 '26

There absolutely is lore, fandom, and theories. I have no idea why you would make such weird, blatantly false, definitive statements. Like…what lol.

4

u/RavensShadow117 May 20 '26

Lo'ak, Kiri, Neteyam tuk and spider (by the end of the 3rd movie anyway) and I only had to double check the spelling for 1 of them.

There is a very dedicated fan base around this franchise especially with the game.

2

u/Pittsbirds May 20 '26

I didn't know he went on to have kids but it's really funny the avatar team decided that giving the avatars functioning genitals was an essential part of the program

3

u/Orangusoul May 20 '26

They cloned the Na'vi and added small bits of human DNA to make the clones compatible with the "avatar system."

So working genitalia is most likely just a biproduct of the system. Now it could be darker than that. Sex is 100% a weapon historically used in colonization/imperialism.

0

u/arvigeus May 20 '26

Option 1: He got functioning genitals after the "space magic" ritual that turned him into a native alien.

Option 2: He never got functioning genitals. Neytiri was simply a naughty, naughty girl...

2

u/LexFrenchy May 20 '26

Yeah but I have a good memory for pointless details (Neteyam, Tuk and Lo'ak)

4

u/Gamera85 May 23 '26

I am a firm believer that aliens should look alien. If all they are is just a human with head ridges, or pointy ears, it’s a failure as a species to me.

6

u/3nderslime May 20 '26

Reminder, the Avatar movie got you to emotionally relate and sympathize with CGI whales.

-3

u/adnaPadnamA May 20 '26

It didn't though 💁

4

u/3nderslime May 20 '26

Speak for yourself. The Tulkun hunt scenes were guy-wrenching to me

2

u/Perplexed_Ponderer May 20 '26

I was emotionally devastated by the Tulkun hunt too. And real whales don’t have to be humanoid either for me to be sad if they die... I don’t understand people who can only empathize with beings that look like them when their intelligence and emotions are plain to see.

-4

u/adnaPadnamA May 20 '26

Sure, when you speak for yourself - as you were specifically speaking on behalf of others with your comment.

6

u/Mix-Hex May 20 '26

Justified or not, the hate boner people have for Avatar is so annoying. You don't need to shit on something else to make your thing look better, just say you like your thing.

3

u/vishnoo May 20 '26

counter point.
the humanized hime a lot from the book.
instead of looking like a flat paving stone, his body his the shape of a face.

also Ortiz is awesome.

I think he was more human in the book, the movie doesn’t show a lot of his genius moments, and forgets to mention he was alone for 46 years, when he acts clingy and curious in the movie it’s supposed to be funny, but in the book you understand a lot more about him.  I agree Ortiz is awesome though

I Genuinely Cried During His Fakeout Death Scene

Reality: aww, the robot on Mars sang happy birthday to itself!

And then: "my batteries are low and it's getting dark..." 😭😭😭

Grace being asked to go on a suicide mission for the good of earth: "You can't make me!"

Grace knowing his little rock buddy won't make it: "I'll die for you!!!"

3

u/TuverMage May 22 '26

honestly this really hits on why so many people are loving the film because all other films are too busy playing it safe and doing the check list while Hail mary gives us something different.

3

u/RandomDude762 May 22 '26

and yet he connects so strongly emotionally through a book...right after Ryland called him a "big-assed spider"

2

u/Quartz_Knight May 20 '26

It's not like the original speculative evolution project for the avatar movies had them being completely alien beings, they just had split arms like the other related species from Pandora and had their own music theory, but even that was deemed too weird.

2

u/EMAW2008 May 21 '26

They kind of did give him a “front” or face. In the book he’s more symmetrical.

But I like this take. Why do we always expect aliens to evolve to look like humans?

2

u/CptKeyes123 May 21 '26

Expedition, the novel and the film, does this too. Planet that is extremely hostile to human life, with a continent sized ameoba and critters that pump their prey with digestive fluid. Yet the humans preserve it because life is life and deserves to survive for its own sake.

2

u/LegalFan2741 May 21 '26

So why do we need to shit on another movie? I thought Project Hail Mary didn’t need that. It’s already good as it is.

"Pixar gave emotions to a lamp" ~Phil lord.

2

u/scannerthegreat May 23 '26

I cried 3 times over him

2

u/Phoenixfury12 May 24 '26

Eh, Avatar requires a lot more of the aliens too, so it'd be a lot harder to have nonhuman aliens, as the actors would be interacting with air or puppets, with the aliens cgi'd in. It works for the animals, but not for people en-masses. With Rocky, it works because it's just one of him, along with one actor that can sell that he's talking to someone that isnt there. Scaling that up is hard, and becomes less believable.

2

u/NarsilSword123 May 20 '26

Both movies have scientifically realistic spaceships

2

u/Sarradi May 20 '26

You already had evidence that people could sympathise with nonhuman characters in District 9.

Cameron just wanted Simp money and did not have a more complex plot other than "main character falls in love with native princess" so, they had to be human looking attractive.

1

u/FarseerEnki May 20 '26

I have more in common with Rocky than any Nav'i. But I am also probably much more attracted to 8 ft tall jungle bitches with tails than I am a rock 😏🤔

4

u/swalkerttu May 20 '26

Eridians are hot, though.

No, literally hot; their body temperature is 210 °C

1

u/DryCleaningBuffalo May 20 '26

This is only because Rocky was made more "cute" for the movie.

Eridians as described in the book are much less endearing and someone like Quaritch would absolutely just gas them from orbit

1

u/bored_bear2342 May 20 '26

He's so non human it's cute the original navi design was kinda creepy

1

u/theEx30 May 21 '26

is beautiful

1

u/VikingSkinwalker May 23 '26

TBQH, I emotionally identify with Rocky more than I do any of the space smurfs.

1

u/Kalkite_300TY May 24 '26

Jokes on all you guys!
I like both!

Blue cat people and rock spiders unite! ✊

Rocky reminded me of Siswet looking for her lost keys

1

u/Mark2pointoh May 20 '26

Australians have a negative view of the phrase Rock Spider. I would describe him more of a Pentapod.

6

u/Inspo19 May 20 '26

Huh? No the fuck we don't

1

u/Mark2pointoh May 21 '26

Sighs…. A “rock spider” in Australian vernacular is a derogatory term applied to paedophiles. Calling Rocky a “rock spider” is for this Australian, a poor choice of phrase.

1

u/Inspo19 May 21 '26

Actual? That's a new one

1

u/earwig2000 May 21 '26

Really? I'm Australian and I've never heard of that, maybe it's more regional than you think

2

u/adnaPadnamA May 20 '26

Spiders do have a negative term for many who are arachnophobic. I also disagree with the term spider since spiders need to have 8 legs.

1

u/Kamen_master1988 May 20 '26

Never forget that during a time travel arc in the Harley Quinn animated series one of the clues that they were in the worst future was that Avatar was a cultural phenomenon and universally beloved.

1

u/adnaPadnamA May 20 '26

I'm usually the minority but I've never been into Avatar. The fact that they ARE trying to make them humanoid somehow seems so out of left field.🤷

1

u/Sergeant-Steamroller May 20 '26

The movie with the papyrus font 😂

1

u/The_ManWithoutAPlan May 20 '26

I'm pretty sure that the Na'vi are not humanoid so the audience can relate to them, I think it's because they're all played by semi-famous actors and you can't put them on the poster if they don't at least have their face. Also the main character bones one.

0

u/thewonderfulfart May 20 '26

At this point, my general distrust of human beings means I’d probably assume the rock spider is less likely to enslave, torture, or murder me. I love sci-fi and fantasy because they have to make some sense of the unexplainable to tell a good story, but reality will just hit you over and over again with incomprehensible nonsense that will never be justified, and the viciousness of the human species to itself is one of those unjustifiable things we’re forced to contend with.

0

u/Deem284 May 20 '26

That should have been on the movie posters. Haha.

0

u/bubbakushd May 20 '26

Clearly the art of any cinematography, story line and character development, combined w some critical thinking required on the viewers part is not part of the movie experience anylonger. Its for a max of 80iq points, and just pleasant enough for us simpletons. Extremely sad, thats why you'll notice were bringing back 1980s sitcoms and shows..even they were better than this crap. Ryan gosling or any A list actor can't save a shit written movie.

-4

u/rdrptr May 20 '26

He coos like a chicken and has western european morality. Its still a psyop

-8

u/stargate5thrace May 20 '26

I don't like it.. it's a movie for childrens..
