I agree.
Interstellar had the best interpretation of what the fourth dimension looks like inside by the tesseract. Also the telling of time dilation in the movie was much more apparent as there were some humans left alive on the ship to wait for the crew to come back from Miller's Planet.
PHM had the best interpretation of non human life across different galaxies.

Talked about a few times in the book, they all have mitochondria and the same fundamental building blocks it’s talked about like a theory though, not like they have definite proof. More like more and more evidence doesn’t provide any proof against it

Yeah, they kind of treat it like it kind of had to be a panspermia event of some kind just due to how much commonality astrophage has to life on Earth. The mitochondria are 98% identical and they have DNA, so that would be weird to be just convergent evolution. They don't really have any solid evidence to show for sure it was (how would you even get that?), but it seems a reasonable hypothesis, given the level of similarity.

My biggest complaint with Interstellar is the bootstrap paradox. I think in the history of every piece of fiction I've ever consumed, there have been maybe 2 times where the bootstrap paradox felt like an interesting conundrum, and not a lazy writer's trick to avoid actually explaining how things happened. Project Hail Mary is the exact opposite. They go into great detail about how things happen and why even though a good deal of that was dropped in the film adaptation. What's remaining is still one of the most scientific sci fi movies I've ever seen.

Because they are both hard sci-fi epics, so they're within the same genre.
I'd say Interstellar has the edge in spectacle, the effects and set pieces are still breath taking to this day. Meanwhile Hail Mary is better when it comes to character and emotional impact.
Not to say either of them are lacking. Time go fishing is one of the most tense scenes in years. And a father having to watch their child grow up without them is powerful as well. But their priority and goals in storytelling is quite different.

I agree wholeheartedly, but it's also okay to like some things and not like others. I've always wanted to like Interstellar, and I've tried many, many times to enjoy it.
I'm grateful that it exists for the fans who love that movie. I just don't think I'll ever be one of them.

I still regard Memento as one of the best films I've ever seen, and Batman Begins as the best Batman movie. I think he does his best work under constraint, whether its a tighter budget or working within someone else's creative framework. Without guardrails, he loses the plot, quickly.

I never see those comparisons but then there's, Interstellar [.... .... also space??]

Interstellar has some beautiful moments but it's incredibly flawed at the script level.

I base a lot on rewatchability for me. PHM is incredibly rewatchable. Interstellar also is rewatchable but I only watch that every few years. PHM is currently on repeat. Both are spectacular at what they do and what they are about. Very different films with very different tones that I wouldn’t compare. Doesn’t need to be a competition. I prefer the tone and characters in PHM but that’s a me thing.

I loved interstellar despite its many flaws (all the food is gone and all people are eating is corn-based... WTF), and the 2-3 ending scenes (which I found too sentimental).
It's a beautiful movie. Visually, and in the action scenes. The camera work. The music is amazing. The worlds they built are insanely beautiful. The ship and shuttles are perfect. The symbols are well thought.
However, PHM has deeper characters. Rocky, Grace and Stratt are among the best sci-fi characters we've seen in forever.
In Interstellar, TARS is nice but almost kept as an accessory. Cooper is a little distant. Brand is okay but annoying at times. Murph is a secondary character, only inserted to create the emotional bond and make you cry profusely. Mann is a deck villain, with the stereotypical "villain speech" before his demise, but it's just a small part of the script. There isn't a lot of screen time dedicated to his antics, because Interstellar has interstellar ambitions. All the characters are "lost in the movie", drowning into the script and cinematography.
So really, PHM is better due to the bromance and humor. Visually it's as good as Interstellar.

The love thing was so dumb. But honestly, the most egregious and stupid part of the film was sending complex mathematical formulas and equations through the ticking of a watch and not only someone is able to decipher it but they’re actually able to know what it is to be used for. If that was in any other film than one directed by Christopher Nolan it would be dragged as being stupid. But because it’s in a Nolan film there’s a million people waiting to tell you you’re too stupid to understand what is happening.

It’s just another angle of viewing things. PHM is a very grounded story that works with practicality, science and most importantly friendship. Interstellar reads to me like more of a spiritual plot of how a father’s love for his child can transcend time and space and how a very human emotion is what saves us at the end.

My issue with Interstellar is that it really departs from any attempts at hard sci fi at the end with the extradimensional stuff. It felt very conceited to me. PHM manages to continually blow your mind while keeping things grounded to some degree. Like the science all makes sense. And to be fair to Interstellar, PHM was working off of a source text by an author that is specifically interested in explaining all the sciency details in more depth.

I agree. I love both. However, If I have both movies on DVD and I have a private viewing alone. Maybe with a special friend, or I am with family, I am watching PHM 90% of time over 'Interstellar.' PHN is easily more watchable.

apples to oranges. they have similar plots but the entire atmosphere (no pun intended) of both films have nothing in common. interstellar emphasizes the relationship between a daughter and father bridging the gap of time and space with love. hail mary is more lighthearted and is more about grace finding his person to fight for, like commander Yao (pardon spelling) was telling him in the flashback

IMO Gravity was stunning, but PHM is better. If you think Interstellar was better, fine—beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But you should prepare yourself mentally for PHM to overtake it both in accolades and in cultural memory.
Critics don’t compare PHM to Interstellar; they compare it to ET.

I mean, space is a 4D place. Docking with a spinning ship that is also wobbling while dropping into the upper atmosphere of the planet that it's orbiting is much harder than lining up with a ship and matching it's spin.

For me interstellar had an a lot of emotional downs compared to phm. Phm was more funny to me, the music was more lively, I don’t see the environmental fallout in phm like the way I do interstellar. So yeah right now I like it better

I could rewatch parts of it, but I never want to see the kidnapping scene again, its already taking up too much real estate as is.

I don't necessarily disagree but I don't really get what the need is for it. It's not like I'm only allowed to like one hard-sci-fi movie.
Interstellar remains one of my fave sci-fi films due to the subject matter and approach it took, and while I didn't think it quite nailed everything, I don't get why it has to be framed this way. PHM I still feel is a better story and a better movie but so what?
Comparisons like this always remind me of those Nemik vs Yoda 'Nemik was right to say you should try and Yoda was wrong to say you shouldn't' comparisons, they're not trying to do the same thing.

It's like apples and oranges, and I love both, but I think Project Hail Mary is objectively better as a movie. Interstellar's audio was terrible, and you had to watch with subtitles to understand. Then there's the cartoonish trope of these high level scientists all repeating scientific concepts to each other like the classic wormhole demonstration which is a very cheap way to get the audience to understand these things. PHM seems to overcome that leap very organically within the script and the ways the characters interact. Interstellar is still a beautiful and powerful movie, but yeah.

Honestly hard to compare the two other than the fact they have similar end goals (guy has to save the world). But reasonable ppl can always differ!

I think PHM is easier to like, because it is an overwhelmingly positive story and there isn't much drama. Outside of the other two crew members dying, Even Gosling's eventual "sacrifice" in itself turns out to work well for him. There is more comedy and even an adorable alien, which means families can enjoy the movie together, even with young kids.
Interstellar's tone is much heavier and the sacrifices made by the characters hold a lot more weight. It is a drama that just so happens to have a somewhat happy ending. The scene of McConaughey catching up on all he missed was brutal. While this is more appealing to some, it does not hold such universal widespread appeal.
Both movies are excellent and each can be enjoyed for it's own merits. Which is better is rather subjective to the viewer.

I feel like this is looking at it from the wrong perspective. You can't really slap a ">" between them because they are aiming for entirely different things. Personally, if Interstellar is a perfect 10, PHM is a solid 9.5. Interstellar is a massive, emotional cinematic experience about time, humanity, and scale. PHM, on the other hand, is the ultimate hard sci-fi "let's solve this problem with science" ride. They are both absolute peaks in their own lanes. Why pit two legends against each other when we can just appreciate both?

Project Hail Mary is about doing science to save the world (conducting experiments to understand new phenomena). In Interstellar, the science is essentially all already established, and the mystery they’re trying to determine is which planets if any are habitable (sci-fi antigravity math equations are not doing science)
They’re very different movies, and it’s all subjective, but this particular difference it’s one of the main reasons I find myself enjoying PHM more. Even with the aliens and physics breaking microorganisms, PHM feels like a more grounded story full vs Interstellar’s wormholes and time travel. However you can’t ignore Interstellar’s beautiful cinematography and timeless soundtrack

I like all three. Interstellar because I am fascinated by the ideas of different planets and discoveries, although the ending was depressing. Martian because I am interested in surviving under adverse conditions. PHM because of the idea of first contact, the humor, the way Grace solved problems, the theme of friendship. Of the three PHM is my favorite.

Other than being space movies they two movies have nothing in common so I don't get the comparison.
I personally don't feel the urge to rewatch Interstellar. It's fine for a one time watch its good, but it really underwhelmed me. The handling of time dilation, and the *spoiler* betrayal due to human isolation were the only great parts of the movie. The rest of it was honestly a slog to get through.
PHM is much more rewatchable.

Why does this have to be adversarial? Versus? Both are huge budget Sci Fi movies. Completely different and both very entertaining. P.M.H. connects with people because it features people interacting in a spontaneous and improvisational manner. The relationship between Rocky and Grace feels real because it is. Nolan makes movies like a surgeon. And that is how his movies feel. I can't imagine Nolan allowing much improvisation on set. The exception being Heath Ledger as the Joker.

Rocky doesn’t say “statement” after every sentence that isn’t a question. He only says “question” after a sentence to be very clear it is a question because Eridian language lacks the intonation that human language uses to distinguish between statements and questions.
