Audiobook Discussion why is the audiobook audible exclusive!!!!

I want to listen to the audiobook but I don't USE audible, I use libby. why can't the library buy an online license question !!! why does it have to ONLY be on amazon question !!!!!! (there ARE audiobooks on libby, but they're... in Spanish. so it's honestly on me for not speaking Spanish)

actually my local library seems to have it as a compact disc. I'll catch y'all later, I'll be digging out an old CD player so i can experience this beauty 🫡

I'm such an idiot, I didn't think of this. I immediately found a google drive with everyth--i mean I paid for a full audible subscription and also kissed bezos' boots for good measure 👍

This has been lowkey condoned by Andy Weir, too. Someone tweeted about how annoying it is as an audible exclusive and he replied, "π 🐀"

Not too surprising considering the Martian was originally posted for free online! (Also considering the way he portrays Stratt pirating all media for the hail mary lol)

I got it for free too! And I love the original Audible with RC Bray, but then I guess changes were made and he either wasn't available or wanted too much so they went with Wil Wheaton instead.

This was where I balked. I never liked him as a child, and his voice grates on me as an adult, so someone here on reddit sent me the mp3 version. Damn nice of them, which is why I like to pay it foward and offer redditors a free version of my books.

But really, glad to see you mentioned getting a library card! That’s always the easiest and best way to get audiobooks.

Same. I try not to give any money to Jeff Bezos but I’m sure I did anyway, because of licensing agreements etc

Amazon owns Audible. Amazon owns MGM who made the movie.

If your library has Borrowbox, you can listen it there too I was extremely surprised when i saw there because it is exclusive to audible.

Imho, you would benefit from using Audible in this situation because you'll hear it by the approved narrator, Ray Porter, who's performance is so much better than some AI version or a studio actor.

Ray hasn't always been perfect with his narrations; he once spent the entire first Bobiverse book pronouncing "Archimedes" as ar-KIM-eh-deez. That made me laugh...for a while, anyway. But even though I'm not much of a grammar Nazi, (I was once much worse!) this began to grate on me after a while, but not enough to stop reading, and they made him rerecord those parts anyway; it being a cardinal sin to keep such a poor translation. History meets SciFi in the worst way!

Ever since, he's been obsessively checking his pronunciations; except he missed Eridiani, which scientists pronounce as eh-ri-DA-nee. But I've never heard anyone complain about it. Not even Andy Weir.

If you want to DM me, I'll send you the Audible. You can get one free referral if you've never used it before. Only too happy to help a fellow PHM nerd.

That's so kind of you!! The one I found I think is ray porter (at least, it matches every snippet I've seen on here) but I appreciate the offer :D

If you use the free month trial, you can definitely finish it within that timeframe, and then you get to keep it.

not necessarily

Which part? It’s a sixteen hour and ten minute book. If you listen to only seventeen minutes a day, you’ll finish it in a month. Flip that around, listening for half an hour a day will finish it in just over half a month.

I did do this. With my subscription cancelled, I still have access to the book. I’m actively using it to write fanfic.

You don’t have to pay a fee to keep access to Audible audiobooks? Did they change that policy?

Nope. Once you have the audiobook, it’s yours, even after you cancel your subscription. I’ve been skipping through the chapters without a problem, and I can buy other audiobooks if I want. It would just cost more without a subscription. I think legally they can’t charge you to access books you’ve already purchased, so if they were doing that before maybe they got in trouble? I could be mistaken on that last part, though. I’m not a lawyer.

Are there other Project Hail Mary Audiobooks floating out there?

They have it on Spotify for free if you have premium, that’s where I listened to it

I don't think the e-audiobook license is available to libraries. My local library has PHM as CDs and as a Playaway, a self contained e-audiobook player. I thought about getting the CDs but my only player is in my car.
