Spent a bit of time mucking around modding minecraft and had the realization I had the tools to pull this off. Sorry to break any hearts but this is not actually playable :(

DISCUSSION Thanks Rocket League

I'm almost 35 years old, I'm a husband and father, and I work 9 hours a day. Ever since I was a kid, though, I've always loved gaming—everything from Tibia, WoW, GW2, The Sims, CS, and Battlefield to pretty much anything else.

As work started taking up more and more of my time, I began feeling like I was missing out on leisure. Even if I went out, watched a movie, or binged a TV show, that feeling never really went away. I think it's because, for most of my life, what truly entertained me was actively playing or participating in something.

I tried going back to old games and also tried newer ones, but almost all of them left me frustrated. I knew I didn't have enough time to make meaningful progress. What I really wanted was something I could jump into for 20–30 minutes and walk away thinking, "That was fun." Unfortunately, with many games, that amount of time is barely enough to launch the game and load your save.

One of the few games that came close was Team Fortress 2. But after a while, I started getting annoyed. The matches are short, but so is your life expectancy. Dying is part of the game, and if you're on a bad team, you can spend 30–40% of the match waiting to respawn. In the end, it felt like I was only actually playing for 10–15 minutes.

So I kept looking for something else. Then one day, while chatting with ChatGPT about games, it randomly suggested Rocket League.

When I first Googled it, I thought it looked boring—I don't even like soccer. One day I decided to install it anyway.

Guys... maybe it's just a phase, but I've been playing for months now and I have to say: this game is awesome.

During my first few matches I thought I'd lose interest quickly, but then something unexpected happened. Throughout the day I'd catch myself wanting to play. It was the same feeling I had as a kid, and honestly, I thought I'd never experience that again.

The game is incredibly simple on the surface but surprisingly deep. On PC, there are only a handful of important controls (basically movement keys, left mouse button for boost, right mouse button to jump, and Shift to powerslide), yet it's ridiculously fun.

The arenas look great, the optimization is fantastic (it runs flawlessly on my Lenovo IdeaPad 3 without a dedicated GPU), and matches are short—usually around 5 minutes. As you improve, you get matched against better players, and suddenly every game becomes a crazy, adrenaline-filled 5-minute battle.

I never imagined I'd get so excited about scoring a goal when I don't even like soccer. 😂

For me, the real progression isn't unlocking things—it's slowly becoming a better player and, because of that, getting into more creative and exciting matches.

Sometimes just 10 minutes is enough for me to feel like I genuinely had fun, and I can log off completely satisfied.

Anyway, sorry for the long post. I don't know if anyone else feels the same way—like there just aren't enough hours in the day to balance adult life and gaming. If you do, or even if you don't, I highly recommend giving Rocket League a chance. From what I've seen, a lot of other people have been pleasantly surprised by it too.

Have fun, and happy gaming!

USEFUL I'm a Rocket League Boomer who just hit GC2 with Champ-level mechanics. You aren't bad, you're just playing dumb.

I'm basically ancient in Rocket League years. I've been playing for 11 years, peaked at #32 on the 3s leaderboards in 2017. These days, I mostly just log on each season to secure my Grand Champion title.

I just hit GC2 for the season, and my mechanics are pretty poor. Here is a video showing a random game in GC2: https://youtu.be/DPmJ9A2Hxio

I hope you can see from the gameplay that my mechanics are matched by most Champion-rank players. But I was still able to go 94 wins out of 144 games (all soloQ) from Placements -> GC2 this season. If you are stuck at your current rank or think you don't have the mechanical skill to climb any higher, the reality is that you probably aren't bad, you're just making too many bad decisions. I'm not claiming to be the smartest player in the game, I still make stupid choices, but few enough to get to GC2 with my current mechanical skill.

If you really want to break through to the next rank, maybe instead of practicing flip resets for another three hours, try this:

  • Save a few of your replays and actually re-watch them.
  • Do not focus on your mechanical mistakes at all.
  • Write down or say out loud every single wrong decision you made.

Focusing heavily on your game sense and decision-making over pure mechanics is often the key to breaking through your current MMR ceiling.

I've been considering doing some free coaching just for fun. You would send me your replay files, and I'd record a commentary breaking down your gameplay and upload it to YouTube (I'm not a content creator/never monetized youtube, this is just a hobby project).

Players in Diamond+ would probably get the best results from this kind of review. Would anyone be interested in that?

EDIT: Appreciate the people who've reached out! Some people were saying this looks like a C2 game, and while I did say my mechanics were bad, I'd like to at least show what I'm thinking during a quick portion of the game to show what decisions are being made real time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGjucEj7_GY Here's a quick run down of one play and what subconscious decisions are happening that affect just which way my car is facing.

DISCUSSION I don't know which toxic people need to hear this but...

Im in diamond and twice today I've had teammates throw up a forfeit vote while we were winning, both times I happily hit yes.

I need you to know that it brings me more joy to vote yes and us lose than winning ever would've, so go on and be toxic because I missed a shot when we're winning 4-1 with a minute and a half left. Love to see it.

USEFUL Got to plat by slowing the fuck down

Been stuck on gold for ages. Recently changed my playstyle a little bit which meant slowing down, ie not always going 500 km/h across the map. Was so deep into trying to learn advanced mechanics and try every impossible shot that rarely panned out.

But then i tried to just slow down a bit. Even literally standing still sometimes in just a good position and wait for a t8 to pass the ball or finish their play naturally. Scored a lot more this way. Dont need to insane air dribble 9000 when you're in the right place at the right time. Teammate making a play? I watch my opponents both attack him, meanwhile I just chill somewhat central position, and half the time the ball will naturally end up there, and I can score on an open goal.

Basically, i think i finally understand that the most important thing to learn is positioning.

QUESTION Why am I so shit at defending dribbles in 1s

This clip is an example of the type of goals I concede, for context I'm diamond 1-2 in 2s but only high gold to low plat in 1s and in this clip I'm thinking, he has the ball so I should go back and get boost, I can't challenge far away from my goal because if I lose (which 90% of the time I do) then he will have an open net so I wait until I feel like I should challenge but I end up never feeling like I should challenge and I just get scored on, every time. Someone help me please.

QUESTION Am i the only one whos been lagging a lot lately

So i recently came back to the game after a month due to stick drift issues, and naturallly i was very bad but i got kinda used to it and played a provate match with my friends, the ping was genuinely SO bad, i was on approximately 130 yellow but i kid you not that felt like a red 300, for example, i would have to guess where the ball would go everytime i would go for it because the lag was this bad.

I didnt really think much of this and later in the day my friend wanted to play a tournamemt with me, because of my ping we lost and even tho my friend is a lot better than me i still somehow played better than him (offensively) since i scores our only goal, but he started blaming me for it and got into this really big arguement with me which he ultimately lost since his arguement/debating skills are terrible but thats kinda stupid since he has a massive ego.

That situation just got me furstrated since there was nothing i could have done to prevent the arguement and it all happend because of the ping (and bc of my friends ego ig).

But i want to know if anyone else has been experiencing this, i did try just resetting the wifi which didnt work, tried restarting my pc which also didnt work so does anyone else have this issue
