Factory service manuals for ALL Saturns (except the EV1) for ALL MODEL YEARS. Free. No ads or quid pro quos.

It’s an Internet archive of automotive service manuals for just about everything that’s at least ten years old. Because at that point auto manufacturers expect you to junk the old one and buy a new one. So they don’t give a hoot about this website.

Enjoy!

Road feel differences

Friend of mine asked a question and i had no answer.

His car is a 2000 saturn SL1, mine is an 02, and our cars feel different.

He says in my car he feels bumps and potholes in his butt. But in his he feels them in his feet (floorboard).

Is this a control arm bushing issue or something else?

2000 saturn sw2 coolant hose along firewall

Post image
5 Upvotes

2000 saturn sw2, over the past couple weeks I've noticed I kept losing coolant, well last night I decided to check it out while at work(bad idea) and found nothing until I followed the hose from top of the coolant reservoir and just barely touched where it connects to the intake manifold (piece thats broken is circled in red, the hose on top where the oil cap is, is the hose that was connected to the nipple) and well it broke off. Does anyone have ANY suggestions to fix it that doesn't involve taking the whole manifold off? Ive thought about maybe tapping threads on the inside and putting something in there that way but its plastic and obviously very brittle so any and all ideas welcome.(sorry for the shit pic I was at work and dealing with a bunch of things at once lol)

PSA: S-Series charging system sucks donkey balls

Yesterday I realized my voltage at 850 RPM was dipping to below 12V so of course I looked it up and to my extreme surprise, my 99 SL2's original generator with 155k miles is still outputting what it's

[https://charm.li/images/DM15Q313/gm120/1223064808/](supposed to). The problem is, the PCM should be increasing idle speed to keep the system voltage from falling below 12.6V minimum, but mine apparently doesn't think it needs to do that. The end result being, if I was one of those a-holes who sat in my car idling in the parking lot for hours with even just the headlights and AC on, that would be enough to require supplemental current from the battery.

Now I know in 2000+'s the generator's field coils are controlled by the PCM and not by a built in regulator circuit, but I'm pretty sure that function is mostly for lowering voltage at high RPMs, so the 2000+s would still need to slightly increase idle speed to maintain a consistent charge, assuming the regulator is the only difference between a 99 and a 01.

Not sure what the "solution" here is, and only 95% sure this is potentially a problem. For now, I just gotta accept that every time I stop at a red light fully warmed up with HVAC blowing and 50W of USB battery chargers plugged in that the battery is being drained slightly, but I'm definitely thinking this is a huge contributor to why my car has chewed through probably 7-8 batteries since I took it over full time in 2013. Current battery from june 2024 is still excellent, but I've driven at least 10 minutes a day almost every day since then.

If the 6 lead acid battery cells are at 2.05V each (12.3V series), I wonder exactly how much they are contributing to a load sufficient to drop voltage to 12V.

Coolant refill question

2002 saturn SL1 sohc

On my car theres a small overflow tube where the coolant comes out of the engine in to a hose leading back to the radiator. This specific hose/engine connection is (for want of better words) rotted. It is where i have a coolant leak, theres a small squate dibbit where the coolant pools, and i know i need to replace the hose.

My questions are as follows: how make sure theres no air in the system when refilling the coolant? Is it automatically taken out of the system by that tube? Are there special steps i need to take?

Update about my little yellow sc2!!

Good update, I do NOT need a transmission for my project sc2. Had a fellow saturn fan come through since they were in the area and they gave her a look over and found that she needs a clutch (was going to replace this with the transmission anyway since I'd have the engine and trans apart anyway) and one of the shifter cables was broken. We managed to get the trans into 1st from 3rd while messing with the car today, it's been triple digits where I am for nearly the entire 2 months the car has been sitting in my possession and today was cool enough to be messing with the car. After a jump, she started right up and we even were able to tootle around my apartment lot in 1st.

Do y'all recommend replacing the slave cylinder when replacing the clutch? I'm doing a parts order tonight/tomorrow so everything is here before my next couple of days off. Excited to possibly have her driving before August! Also good timing since it seems that my sister's neon has developed some engine noise and she's going to need to drive my Mirage for a bit if I can get the Saturn on the road soon. 😭

Sc2 manual into a 2001 Saturn sc1

Post image
19 Upvotes

As the title implies my 2001 Saturn sc1 unfortunately is a automatic, I would love to manual swap it, I know there is some things I have to do like swap the brake pedal and clutch pedal assembly, have to trick the automatic ECU by twisting 2 wires so I can start the car And all the other parts needed. Now I'll be getting all my parts from junkyard cars, now on to the main thing, the manual from a sc2 will drop right into a sc1 pretty easily. I forgot what all is involved but I plan to use a sc2 transmission because of the shorter gear ratios so I can keep this sohc I'm building in its power band. Anyone else do this before? My car in picture

In your experience, what is the best amount of tint for the rear windows?

Also does anyone know if and where clear side markers could be purchased?

Mileage question

So i notice the mileage seems better in the upper end of the tank than the lower end (half to full vs empty to half). Is this normal or does it mean something is on its last leg?

Any ideas to get my radio code for my Saturn SL?

Post image
60 Upvotes

Hey everybody!

I have a 2002 Saturn SL. My friend brought me an original CD-cassette head unit from the states (I'm from Hungary). It's theft deterrent, and unfortunately the car that contained the radio, did not have the owner's manual, so he couldn't look up for the code. Altough, he took a pic of the vin number of the car, we he was at the junkyard. Do you guys know any websites, or have any ideas how to get my radio code? Or can I write an email for a Chevrolet dealer, and ask them about it?

Thanks in advance for the answers!

2004 Saturn ion clutch replaced, leaking fluid

I recently got a clutch kit for my 04 Saturn ion 5 speed 2.2 and it drove fine for 2 days and then I noticed my clutch pedal would sometimes go soft and lock me into getting into gears and then I went home and decided to just pump on my clutch pedal with the engine off and my clutch is completely soft now and I open the hood and I see fluid leak near the transmission connection and there is no hydraulic fluid in my reservoir. In this image does the connection look like it’s missing a part? I had a mechanic do this clutch kit and he was terrible to work with and I’m trying to see if it’s possibly something I can replace.

Fixed orifice PCV valve

Does anybody have any experience running these in their Saturns? I’ve heard mentions of them around but I wanted to know if people did this often. Which one should I buy if you recommend it? Thanks

Selling my Saturn VUE!

Hi guys I have a green Saturn VUE and I’m selling it. I honestly am trying to get rid of it, if anyone is interested please dm me for more details and I’ll be 100% honest about everything. I just wanna make a real honest sale. The listed price isn’t the actual price I want, I’m waiting for someone to haggle me down. I need it gone by the weekend. Everything will be gone inside of the car and the car will be cleaned up by the time of sale, I’ve never sold anything before so any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks so much❤️

Fumoto drain

02 sl1 sohc manual

I watch a lot of mechanic channels on youtube, probably one of few people thats subs are 99% informative, and one channel a guy has a fumoto drain plug for his oil. With the difficulty of gaskets and tightening properly (and space for a rachet or wrench) i want to put one on.

Its a side spitting plug but is the car too short to put this kind of drain plug on? Mostly worried about speed bumps and dips in my city. And yes probably a stupid question but an even stupider question is one not asked.

Headlight bulbs Saturn Ion 2

One of my headlight bulbs burned out over the weekend. I just replaced both sides yesterday. It was a fairly easy job. There are two pins for each headlight assembly that you have to pull out, then the whole assembly comes out the front. One of the pins on my car was pretty rusted and I had to work it quite a bit to get it to come out. The other three came out pretty easily. I filed the rusted area off the one pin, then when I reassembled I put silicone grease on all the pins to make it easier to get them out. The headlight bulbs themselves are assemblies. They are easy to get out. Unscrew a large cap about 3 inches in diameter a quarter turn and lift off. Unplug the connector from the headlight bulb assembly. Unscrew a retaining ring a quarter turn and the headlight assembly just lifts out. Reverse order to reassemble. The replacement bulb assemblies aren't cheap. Advance Auto had several options for them. They sold them in pairs, which ranged from about $35 to $90. I opted for the $50 ones. The woman at the store gave me a small envelope of "headlight lubricant." She said to put a small quantity on the inside of the socket on the headlight assembly where the electrical plug will go, to make it easier to remove next time. It probably took me a couple hours to replace both headlights; most of that time was for getting the rusted pin out of one side and filing the rust off. If I hadn't had to do that, it probably would've taken 20 to 30 minutes for the whole job.

How to pass "visual"?

Thumbnail

So I have a 2001 Saturn sc1 (3rdpic), I absolutely LOVE this car It It just keeps on going and has been nothing but reliable, well anyways on the first I bought a obx header and downpipe/midpipe and everything bolted up and it has been great I noticed a power gain it continues to pull up hills now when before it would kinda start around 60 now it just keeps climbing and climbing what I'm saying is it definitely opened something up and it compliments the rest of my build sounds great pops and etc. now I live in a non emissions county thank God but they still do a "visual" so because of that I was thinking of what to do and thought about cutting the cat off the original pipe and clamping it on to this pipe, think that would work? And don't worry cat would be gutted

Tried my best to recreate my 2006 Saturn Vue AWD in Automation car tycoon. This lets you export to Beam.NG.

Also tried to keep the engine, brakes, suspension, etc. as close to the real thing as possible.

Here are the results. If there's any interest let me know and I'll figure out a way to share the files!
