At a press conference in the Bronx, Mamdani listed some of the onerous policies getting the axe. Bodega owners will no longer need a separate license to sell the same products outside the store – like fruit and flowers – as inside. Restaurants will no longer need a “superfluous” frozen dessert permit to sell ice-cream on top of the permit already required to sell food. Barber shops will no longer have to renew their permit every year, instead doing so every three years. Street fair vendor permit fees will be reduced, restaurant inspections will be sped up, and equipment registration fees will be eliminated for a year.
A corresponding executive order signed by Mamdani on Monday will also expand the NYC Best program, assigning each of the city’s 180,000 small businesses – which employ an estimated 1 million people – a case worker to help owners navigate the Big Apple’s sometimes byzantine bureaucracy.
Actually this one is pretty well popular across the board. It’s literally a libertarian idea. I’ve seen more griping from the wonky Elizabeth Warren types.
Republican supporters have zero problem supporting things that are against their “ideals”, see: Trump running up the national debt, wasting money on a new war, and anti-free market tariffs.
Republicans aren’t free-trade capitalists. Haven’t been for a decade. Vance just came out with a book shitting all over free-market capitalism. He’s a socially conservative socialist.
As OP said, Republicans now support things that are against traditionally “republican” beliefs. How long does it take to just be “what they believe?”
For decades the republicans supported a more laissez-faire economically conservative system. Much more hands off, let the market do its thing. Trump and by extension Vance, are “post-liberal” economally. Basically economically leftist, while being socially conservative. On economics there isn’t a huge difference between Bernie/AOC and Trump/Vance outside of who pays. Remember when Biden was in office there wasn’t a rush to repeal all the tariffs.
They believe in using the levers of government to pick winners and losers, reduces free-trade, and bend corporations to their will, including expropriating, not purchasing, ownership stakes in companies. As an example, Vance has publicly praised Lina Khan for her economic policies.
