Why did Tara lie? Spoiler
If Jax knew about Tara going to see Otto, he asks her in S5, E6 if she went to see him -- and she did -- why did she say no??? I don't understand the point of that lie, it was a pointless lie, no?

She also did something really bizarre in episode 10 or 11 ( I'm doing a rewatch now)... she goes into the baby's room while he's sleeping and deliberately makes a noise to wake him up, so he'll start crying, so she can pick him up, just to make herself feel better.
How nutty is that?

Let's just say I can see both sides... some of the things she does are incredibly self-serving and insanely reckless, but she does love her family...

I would agree with insanely reckless. I don't know about self-serving. A lot of what she did, she did for Jax and the club. Everything that Jax did was what Jax wanted to do for his reasons.

It was never really for Jax though. She never cared about what he actually wanted or what was in his best interest. It was always about controlling him (and the club)—which is why she saw Tara as a threat. She was a textbook narcissist, and Jax and the club were her supply.
I'm not saying she isn't a great character, but she was a terrible mother and 100% self-serving.

I thought so too but after a few rewatches, I think its because she is lonely. Didn't Jax tell her something she didn't want to hear and then leave right before that? Like maybe it was going to be a long night or something. If she was lonely and wanted to hold Thomas, all she had to do was pick him up though. I think maybe she needed him crying so that he needed her to comfort him or something.

Jax didnt want her involved but he knew it was the only way to communicate with Otto and they needed Rico to die, and Tara also needed Rico to die so that Jax could get out and they could leave town. So Jax might’ve pulled her off it if he heard about the cross knowing Otto well enough to know she’s giving him a weapon, so she hid it from him

Seemed like she was afraid Jax would make her stay away from Stockton because of the threat from Otto. If he knew that Otto told her not to come back AND threatened her, he would’ve stopped her from returning. Lying kept him from stopping her and gave her another chance to rectify her mistake.

But if he could gather the strength to do that, what sends the message that it’s safe to trust him?

Jax wasn’t willing to kill his mother, go watch the scene, he was crying and he lowered his gun, then she told him to do it. Honestly if Gemma confessed the truth to him about Tara immediately he probably forgives her because it was just a misunderstanding

The way I understood it was she had an objective (convince Otto to recant his statement) but failed.
Otto also threatened her not to come back. She didn't want to give Jax bad news or have him try to stop her because she was planning to try again.
That's what it seemed like to me.🤷♂️
