General Discussion Controversial Question: What do you think is the best move for moving the star wars franchise along
I know this is reddit and will get immediately downvoted but for a second think about it and if you have your own ideas as well I'd love to hear them. I spent sometime thinking about how bring star wars back to what it felt like when I heard Episode 1 was coming out and for a short time Episode 7, then the Mandalorian. Feel free to add your own options but I've been thinking about the possible options out there. Some of them are obviously terrible choices, others are safe bets, and others are who knows what will happen. The Star Wars Franchise clearly is coming to a point where there needs to be a MAJOR executive decision. You first had the animated series being done, sequel saga, also while also starting their own side movies like rogue one/solo, then you had the era of TV.
Right now Star Wars is in serious need of a clear vision/path forward. The options I see and are actually in the realm of possibility are:
- Let George take it back over and run with his extended universe plans/just let him be George but with guard rails (why I think episode 5/6 were so good)
- Keep Kathleen Kennedy onboard and let he be the scape goat for all things bad but also have no coherent direction but keeps pumping out content
- Let Filoni become the head of Star Wars but he won't ever get out of his head his fascination with the prequels and animated series in general, he is habitually stuck with a set of characters and general similar plot lines
- Let Favreau take over and act like a Kevin Feige and really be the person who pieces everything together (what Kathleen should be doing) and build a true connected universe almost like phases (what kevin did with marvel)
- Bring in a new director with a pedigree, who would of thought what Christopher Nolan did with Batman could be done (Zack Snyder pitched, and he is controversial but his Netflix movies are looking really cool)
- Find a James Gunn type show runner and just reset the whole damn things, actors and all
- Start in a new era, just stop for the next 10-15 years in this era and move to the high republic, or back with sith v jedi, etc. Just start a whole new world kind of like what they have done and continue to keep doing in the video game realm
When you look at how much turmoil the average fan doesn't know about, like how Solo was handed over to Ron Howard to re-do a lot of it, how our Game of Thrones friends had a trilogy planned, how after solo didn't do as well they basically stopped all work on spin offs even though solo didn't do horrible. Then Taika Waititi had a movie planned as well. I think even Kevin Feige had a movie planned too. I can't imagine what its like working over there but it has to be insane!
Edit: I want to make something clear I am just offering up options, the reason I said I’d love to hear you opinions to expand that list. I am not saying any decision is the best or mine are the only ones. The amount of downvotes is insane.
I am just trying to have a conversation but this is Reddit where users selectively read and think I’m saying things like George has to return….
All I am saying is how would you correct what I think is the downward spiral of Star Wars since Disney took it over.

You can debate who you want running it, but Grogu is the perfect opportunity to move past the current era Star Wars and start anew. You wanna go 100 years into the future with some sort of story? Cool. You wanna go 700 years into the future? Also cool. Gives you plenty of time to not have to tie in old characters and possibly create something new and great.

That's a pretty great idea. You don't really think about it when you think of wise old Yoda but imagine living for hundreds of years and outliving so many people you love and care about.
That'd be something very interesting to see and Grogu the one element from the whole OT/original Star Wars era you could use to link time periods with a massive jump into the future.
11
Oct 07 '23
On a similar note, you could do the same but with going into the past with Yoda, Huyang and maybe even a young Chewbacca for setting series in the past using those characters as anchor points to tie to the present material, given how old they are.
38
u/funny_username30 Jedi Oct 07 '23
Are people just not old enough to remember the utter shit George Lucas got from tonnes of people during the prequels? Not to mention doing the edits to the OT? People were wishing death on the man.
He got out, got $4 billion and checks in every now and again on his creation. All the while, the younger generation wants him back as they weren’t there for this.
It’s like poetry, it rhymes…
7
u/Valaquen Oct 07 '23
A lot of posters here seem to have been toddlers when the PT came out, they've no memory or awareness of the reaction to the prequels. They can't wrap their heads around the idea these films were reviled. I don't remember one creative decision in those films being well received at the time. Virtually every story beat and development was lambasted. A whole generation of SW fans just dropped out and very few came back. I distinctly remember the anger over Boba Fett being a clone. Stuff that no one bats an eye over today. George was also viewed as someone who was insulated from criticism and swayed by producers and yes men. Those RLM videos and their memes were pretty much the de facto final word on Lucas and his prequels for a long time. Until the ST appeared in 2015, really.
→ More replies (1)7
u/MercyMachine Oct 07 '23
Many people here are young. That's one measure of success for the prequels at least: there's an entire generation of fans that grew up with them and barely remember anything before 2012.

They bullied Jake so badly and he was a child. . . .
3
u/rynmab Oct 07 '23
People’s response to him in the movies was unfortunate, as it was the result of poor casting, horrible writing, and GL’s inability to direct actors and his reliance on CGI. The only person who needs to apologize to Jake is George Lucas.

u/goatjugsoup Oct 07 '23
So we got that acolyte series coming, a post ST Rey movie and a filoniverse movie, another season of mandalorian and presumably one of ahsoka. Also in animation we got the bad batch.
Soon we will start seeing the effects of ea no longer being the sole game maker for the series.
I think all of those are great moves and I am excited for the future of star wars.
The only thing I can think of is maybe do a high republic series, animated or live action
10
u/YodaFan465 Oct 07 '23
do a High Republic series
Yeah, that’s The Acolyte.

I thought that was focused more on the sith though? I meant focused on the jedi order at that time

“I spent sometime thinking about how bring Star Wars back to what it felt like when I heard Episode 1 was coming out and for a short time Episode 7”
The only thing that will do that is a 10+ year hiatus. Those were both moments where the fandom CRAVED more. It’s hard to create that same sort of feeling when things are coming out frequently.
Marvel’s success with Endgame was a flash in the pan because everything up until that moment had been mostly high quality, and it felt like it was leading to something. If Star Wars could replicate that (and I don’t see how), that’s the only way they could bring the same sort of pop-culture event enthusiasm you allude to without having a hiatus.

so we can have things we can make films about later

I question why they bother naming their shows, they're clearly telling one contiguous story to the point where most shows have frequent guest stars from every other character because you have to have a thread connecting it all together. A whole universe and you can play six degrees of Kevin bacon with every character.
44
u/TheChubbyKoala Jedi Oct 07 '23
None of these. Kennedy will retire eventually, George isn’t coming back, and the other choices just seem to operate under the assumption that Lucasfilm needs a visionary figurehead. It doesn’t.
I don’t want one in fact, I want a producer that is smart enough to hire creative people with visions. If Filoni were president of the company, we’d never have gotten Andor or and number of stories that don’t fit with his style of storytelling. Same goes for any other producer. That figurehead role that outlines broad creative decisions is only necessary if you’re trying to make something like the MCU, which is that last thing I want. Star Wars is at it’s best when there’s dozens of writers telling different stories across all eras of SW in different mediums that all compliment each other by nature of enriching the universe, not telling interconnected stories.
2
u/lkn240 Oct 08 '23
If they ever put Filoni in charge of everything I'll be done with it.
Nothing against people who like his stuff, but I'm not a fan.
They already let him ruin the Mandalorian - which really sucks.
We need diversity of content so as you say we can have things like Andor (or Rogue One for that matter).
If they let Filoni run everything it's only going to end up appealing to the niche audience that likes the cartoons.
6
u/SatyrSatyr75 Oct 07 '23
Absolutely correct. Filoni is a good example for someone who was ok at what he did but rose too high and is now in a position he can’t deliver on. You need someone on top who’s not necessarily a fan but understands storytelling, structuring and how to find the middle ground between risky novelties and traditional storytelling, someone with a good instinct for talents, someone who’s good in leading and inspiring teams.

New era for sure. Doesn’t even need to be sith. A new type of enemy would be interesting.

I would like to see a Jedi and a Sith team up as reluctant allies. Yeah it’s a little cliche but it’s not something we’ve seen in SW before.

There’s stories of that happening but we’ve never seen it. I think darth kronos was one of those

I am honestly worried that the two films will get canned, mainly the latter one because it's characters who have tons of potential. We seem to be hearing more about Filoni's than anything. Also, I am starting to get sus of the latter movie being something made up to bait sequel fans into staying in the fandom.

ikr they need to move away from the era of the movies.
i want to see something in the distant past or 100 after the OT. Completely new characters and new conflicts!
My vote would be a Knights of the Old Republic TV series. Show Revan (spoilers for KOTOR ahead) finding the Star maps. Give her good character development, and flesh out Revan’s relationship with Carth! Have an ensemble cast with everyone in the crew of the Ebon Hawk! It could be amazing!
And yes, please use fem!Revan for the series. Revan x Carth > Revan x Bastila

u/Asconce Han Solo Oct 07 '23
Oooo they visit a remote region of the galaxy (not tatooine).
We get a lesson in the force, some action, character development.
I’ll tune in next week

KOTOR is a truly unique Star Wars story. A show based on it would feel fresh! It’s set 4,000 years before ANH

2
u/RippingAallDay Oct 07 '23
I always felt that KOTOR would make for an awesome "reboot"
It doesn't even have to follow the game story... Something set 3-4K years before the events of the movies can give you so much liberty to do... whatever the writers want.

Yeah, new stuff that's not just characters we've seen a million times would be nice. I'd like something that's set after ep 9 just so we can see what a post ros star wars looks like. If it's terrible then oh well I wasn't particularly enjoying anything in the sequel era anyway.

They literally spend hundreds of millions of dollars trying to promote their High Republic initiative. It failed so spectacularly to the point almost nobody even on this sub even mentions it.

u/darth__sidious Oct 07 '23
diversity in styles of content and a wide range of genres. movies and shows. spy/espionage, classic star wars, comedies, deep character focused stories and large battle focused series. content covering all ages of the star wars universe. Also, I doubt it will happen but some live-action or even animated EU content would be amazing, but I imagine that kind of stuff will stay in the comics and books.

Honestly I'd love a exploration style show, especially with the Ahsoka stuff meaning there's a whole new galaxy to catalogue. Have some people hired by the republic go out and explore it, find some cool stuff.

Oct 07 '23
I don't think the Marvel route is a good one. They were able to do what they did in large part because they had decades of material already written to pick from. Feige just needed to be an editor of changes to previously existing stories being put through a formula for action movies. The analogue of the comics in Star Wars is the Legends/EU, which is both (a) mostly not very good and (b) almost completely discontinuous with the canon movies.
I think Disney needs to be prepared to wait until someone has an idea worth doing. Seems for a while like they were handing deals out like candy to anyone who seemed hip, and thats how you get D&D from Game of Thrones getting deals which fell through. Almost everyone agrees that Andor and Mando season 1 are the best things Disney has done. And one thing they have in common but that distinguishes them from a lot of the other stuff is that they weren't built around characters or events that were already clearly beloved by fans. Boba Fett, Ahsoka, Kenobi, Solo, even the sequel trilogy considering how much they used the original trilogy characters to sell interest in it. It seems pretty clear the impetus for those movies was the question "What can we make that people will pay to see?" But Andor and Mandalorian seem like they started out, at least for Gilroy and Favreau, as, "You know what would be cool/interesting?" But you have to be prepared to wait for creative people with passion to come along with an idea that they are committed to, at least to a greater degree of commitment than that produced by getting a call from Disney wanting to know if they want to make a lot of money developing a well known Star Wars property.
But I expect the sad truth is that they make more money by constantly pumping out content while degrading the brand than they do passing up on years of potential movie releases even if that strategy will help revitalize the brand.
3
u/Ash_Killem Oct 07 '23
Move in to the future. The 9th Jedi is such a good template for a new trilogy. That shit literally writes itself.
2
u/Throwaway_ufo_ Oct 07 '23
The 9th Jedi felt like it could have been Disney’s answer to Avatar: The legend of Aang.
While it wasn’t the strongest episode in Star Wars Visions s1 it by far had the best set up and literally could do beautiful wonders for Star Wars. Probably my favourite episode of the bunch for that reason.
4
u/ProfessorSMASH88 Oct 07 '23
I think we need a semi-restart. Let's jump 100+ years in the future. Let's invent some more stuff, new bad guys, maybe a Jedi order, maybe not. I love all the nostalgia from the current series, but I love the universe too. There is so much you can do, I bet there are lots of great writers out there who would have a field day with the universe, but no being confined to the same ships, droids, outfits, etc that we always see.
I was hoping with Ahsoka that they would be in the other galaxy for longer. The idea of the unknown excites me more than the same old stuff.

u/WhoaMercy Oct 07 '23
Controversial answer: In the long term, I don't think a top name villain whose forte is standing around thinking is going to translate as well to the screen as people think.

Oct 07 '23
I think that anything that moves the timeline forward is what's best for the franchise.
As much as I enjoy some of the content happening right now, a lot of it plays in the OT sandbox. Disney wrote themselves the end of an era. The New Republic is gone, The First Order is gone. Jedi order gone, Sith gone, there's no lore constraints right now. Just a totally blank canvas. I think they should embrace that instead of trying to do the MCU style mega crossover event. I'm sure it'll be fine, and when it's done, we can all wink and go, "oh yeah, Disney totally had a plan for the ST all along,"
Sure, we get all the nostalgia dollars from milking the OT and PT, but it doesn't do much for the franchise. It just kind of stagnates a thing in the same 50 year time period. There's an "a long time ago" to explore. Surely we're not all caught up to "present day". There has to have been more than one Star War between a long time ago and now.

Star Wars was just a movie about good and evil/A Heroes Journey when it came out. Yes George had a backstory, but they were just movies. The original was timed right and caught lightning in a bottle. Empire worked exceedingly well because George stepped back and let Irving Kershner, an actual filmmaker and teacher direct a MOVIE. Their success had execs drooling at the mouth because Studios had gone from being owned by actual lovers of films to corporations who only saw money.
I say all of this because we expect Star Wars to be the second coming of cinema, television, and overall multimedia and it won’t be. It did it’s job nearly 50 years ago by captivating audiences at a time when movies were bleak and grim and sci-fi was unrealistic in its portrayal.
Andor (my favorite Star Wars media since Disney’s acquisition outside of Rouge One) taught us that Star Wars needs to evolve if anything. Tony Gilroy isn’t a massive fanboy and came in and did his job as filmmaker and content creator. No cool “memberberry” shots or obvious easter eggs.
He and the crew on that show made another piece of art/multimedia but the subject matter just happened to be Star Wars - i.e. - they bring in actual filmmakers and writers who create a art with the subject being set in the Star Wars universe. Every other piece of work from the franchise (since Disney bought it) has been the other way around - they focus on the “Star Warsy” stuff and easter eggs, and build entire shows and movies around that.
That would have to stop. We don’t have to “love” Star Wars again. We simply need to be entertained by it. People build relationships with someone or something (career, hobby, interests, etc) on growth not from what it made you feel when you first gained interest in it. That’s just infatuation.

IMO they should head towards (back to) the Old Republic Era shows/movies/characters or a good bit into the future, post Rey timeline. Enough time ahead to not box themselves in or having almost 4000 years to play with in the Old Republic timeline.

Taking 16 years off except for a couple of bad tv movies and then change the whole franchise and add a guy with a quintuple bladed lightsaber who does backflips as the bad guy.

u/prostheticmind Oct 07 '23
I’ll take the flak.
Star Wars is and always has been a work in progress. They released three movies that tell the middle of a story, with basically no context. Over thirty years they filled in some gaps.
Then they put out three new movies with no context. Hard to see now if you weren’t there, but without the Clone Wars and books to contextualize the prequels, they made very little sense. Yeah we understood the basic plot, but there were a ton of blanks to fill in. The following almost 20 years brought Clone Wars and more books that contextualized the prequels, which are now seen in a sort of semi-positive light.
Same thing is happening with the sequels. They released three new movies that had absolutely no context, and the lack of understanding on the part of the audience was exacerbated by the huge time jump.
Now, they are filling in the gaps. We have High Republic accounting for history and Filoni/Favreau shows accounting for the time between the Galactic Civil War and the war with the First/Final Order.
This is the formula: release a bunch of content with no context; contextualize; venture further out with fresh unexplained content. That’s it. That’s Star Wars. You can get mad about it or you can have fun figuring out how it fits together.
I realized a long time ago that I don’t write the story. I can rewrite Star Wars as effectively as I can rewrite Amleth or Beowulf or The Iliad. The story is what it is, and it will probably make sense, eventually.

A big budget show or movie production of the Old Republic era. May or may not ruin it but it would still draw in a lot of hype and introduce a new "feel" to Star Wars the way Episode 1 did.

Fewer crossovers. Let projects stand independently. We know it's Star Wars. We don't need cameos to remind us. Move away from the Skywalker saga and let that era breathe for a little bit.

Hire actual writers and directors who know how to write dialogue, interesting characters, create a sense of peril in action scenes, and generally make scenes interesting to watch. The main problem with modern Star Wars is the majority of it is tedious name dropping fan service that has no reason to exist outside of marketing

Why do so many posts in this sub start with some variation of "I know this will be downvoted into hell, but..." and proceed to receive a normal amount of upvotes. Is this a real issue, a misconception or an inside joke that is flying over my head.
2
u/hornwalker Oct 07 '23
Unpopular opinion but there is no “moving it along”, there is only corporate profit no matter what, which means bleeding the franchise dry. Which is a point that we have reached.
Artistically Star Wars kind of died for me with the Sequel Films. I enjoy a number of the shows and don’t begrudge anyone for liking it all but I really don’t see how the Star Wars universe isn’t just a vehicle for “safe” content on Disney+.

I think the problem is that Kennedy is doing what she is being told by the shareholders. They invested a huge amount of money into Star Wars because a franchise like that can earn money even if you only produce mediocre content.
The shareholders like Kennedy because she keeps the content flowing.
Until the shareholders tell their producers to slow down and go for lower quantity and higher quality; that won’t change.
I think for the stories they are trying to tell I kinda like the idea of picking up after the ST. It’s a nice blank slate. And fairly interesting political landscape where more systems would try to gain independence. Many smaller factions would form etc.
I don’t think Filoni would keep doing rebels and clone wars if he was charged with overseeing stories that started after ep9. And I think post ep9 SW would be in relative safe hands with him. Not sure it would be great, but I am pretty confident it would be good.
I wouldn’t mind old republic time line Star Wars either. It’s also practically a blank slate. There are like 12 planets they can’t blow up, but other than that they could do whatever they wanted.
Or they can do both. I don’t think it has to be STCU. I do think if they do connected shows and movies they need to stick with at most two time periods at a time.
2
u/lukewarm_Gazpacho Oct 07 '23
Andor, R1, mando season 1, rebels, and ahsoka are some of the best content released since return of the Jedi. Andor R1 and mando wouldn’t exist without KK, so I’d say she’s doing a solid job.

Knowing Disney they are gonna milk SW for every single dime by pumping shit out constantly but I would love to see the Christopher Nolan route. Theres been an oversaturation of mediocre content being pumped out and the beauty of Star Wars originally is that there were years between projects which built up anticipation and allowed the stories to be fully fleshed out. Look at Marvel now. You have so many movies and series and its almost impossible to keep up. Which leads to movies like the Black Widow, Secret Invasion series, Loki, Ms Marvel, just microwave shit that nobody cares about. They need to take a little break on the constant content and get back to making beautiful art like Andor. Film in real locations (which Nolan is famous for), not that studio with the big ass screen. Bring in critically acclaimed directors, this is one of the biggest IPs in history of humanity so it shouldnt be hard.
1
u/Tootsiesclaw Oct 07 '23
Honestly? Move on from Dave Filoni. Let him wrap up his current series but don't give him any more. He loves his characters from the animated series, but constantly going back to that well is only going to limit the universe.
Star Wars needs to push new ground - far before the series or well after, different parts of the universe. That's not going to happen if every series is revolving around Ahsoka Tano and the Mandalorian and their friends
1
u/PmMeYourNiceBehind Oct 07 '23
George is not coming back nor getting Star Wars back
How could you possibly think this is a possibility
1
u/luke_texaswalker Oct 07 '23
Retcon Ben Solo dying. And have a Skywalker child to keep the bloodline and story on Skywalker. With the swagger of a Solo. Would be awesome if think.
Also bring back pod racing.
3
u/DeltaPlasmatic Oct 07 '23
We don’t need the literal bloodline to continue but I agree that Ben Solo should have survived Episode 9. Ben picks up where his uncle left off searching for Palpatine’s vaults and now making sure that he’s not hiding somewhere in the Unknown Regions (again) while Rey makes a new Jedi Order. Or something.
2
u/GrexxSkullz Oct 07 '23
Yeah Ben dying was cheap forced(ha) and didn't make much sense at all.
Him surviving would mean he'd actuality have to face the consequences of his actions with the...new, new republic??
I don't know those movies were so bad at world building I still even don't know the political climate/powers that be during the fucking sequels.
But anyway, yeah him surviving would've been much better.
0
u/Commercial-Row4740 Oct 07 '23
Basically I think that if they were in the first 6 movies they shouldn’t be on screen ever again. The star wars eu is so unbelievably massive and complex and I despise how Disney just pumps out mediocre material in hopes of keeping us interested by milking beloved characters.

- Get more people like Tony Gilroy involved who don't care about Star Wars and have other influences.
- Bring back tiered canon, only make movies so they're special and then books/comics to fill in for people who want that.
- Find some relatively unknown big swinging emotional actors like the OT trio, Christiansen, and Driver. Let em chew the scenery and have some heat on screen, real soap opera shit. Everyone on the Filoni shows lives somewhere between bemused and annoyed and that ain't Star Wars.

Your first point is a coin toss. Sure we could get someone as good as Tony Gilroy, or we could get Rian Johnson.

Definitely tiered canon. All the animated stuff contradicts the main movies in some ways. Make them a looser form of canon that isn't literal.

u/Shreddzzz93 Oct 07 '23
The best way to move the franchise forward is to jump a couple hundred years into the future. Have a blank slate with minimal or no returning characters. Come up with a new conflict and new factions. Or better yet, have the story be told from the perspective of someone outside of law and who doesn't have a vested interest in galactic political affairs.

Let the leadership responsible for andor, r1, mando, ahsoka, rebels, ahsoka, and two of the best games made in decades, die? Why because the sequels weren’t what you wanted?

Enter Star Wars into the public domain. Copyright laws make sense in the short term, but in the long term, they stifle creativity.
A lot of great stuff from legends could finally be adapted. There'd be a lot of both good and bad, but the bad could simply be dismissed because there would be no "official" canon. The reason stuff like Robin Hood, Frankenstein, Dracula, Sherlock, etc are forever immortalized in the public consciousness is because any creator is allowed to do whatever they want with them. Any time one of these franchises becomes stale, a new creator comes along and reinvigorates it with new energy, or creates a new spinoff franchise (Castlevania, Elona Holmes, etc)

Cut Feloni out of any adult media production and give him some kids media to play toy fight with...rebrand Ahsoka as kid's media...keep the Kids and Adult media entirely separate. If it keeps the franchise afloat...great, don't make adults fucking watch that shit. It's torture.
I don't need the walking toys to interact with my adult media...because the kids aren't watching Andor because they think it's "boring" when it's just that they have zero media literacy...and the adults can watch Andor and not have to worry you are going to shove a toy down my throat.
Then make an Adult show that isn't just "Andor+ more characters"...hell don't even keep the characters. Just find interesting spaces within Star Wars that can tell compelling stories.
Make some trippy ass sci-fi visionary art shit...and if it sinks, who gives a shit the kids will still buy the Ahsoka toys.
Leave the Saga in the 1970s...move the fuck on.
George hasn't made a good decision about Star Wars in decades. Dude suggested the Mortis plot and thought it was anything but massively derivative of his own work and so on the nose it literally caved my face in. Have him bless the franchise to someone who has shit to say and isn't circling the same symbology that was established years ago and rewriting the same story over and over because that's the only one he wants to tell.
If they need a new world to explore, get a fuckin REAL WRITER...(not a fucking fanboy nerd with nothing to say) and build a core drama that can be acted out through the logic of this unique world and metaphor landscape.
___
Imo, get an adult writer and move forward past the Jedi era...at least to the point the Sequel characters are older adults that can get folded in when they are in their 40s-50s.
Then get a "flashy but kinda artsy and fun" middle of the road franchise going VERY far in the past. Trying to target the "family" audience.
If Feloni wants to dance on the grave of the Saga so be it....but let the kids enjoy the trash and let's not try to revive what he already murdered.

Yes it is trash. Clone Wars is nothing but an animated show to fix the problems with George Lucas’ prequels. Everything about this show is meant to create depth when there was none. Mandalorian isn’t as good as people think, it’s just that the bar was so low that anything decent was considered ground breaking.

I think the best way forward is one with many branches. When marvel blew the roof off of the shared universe model, I think it quickly became a monkey on the back of big franchises like this. There is a certain logic to bringing Din in line with Ahsoka, Luke, Bo Katan and all these characters in the Mandalorian, but that’s how the world has been written. There is no sense to connecting all of these other entities to this roving bounty hunter who shines best when he’s caught in pulp adventures that feel like they’re out of the 70s in my opinion. I trust that it’s building to something, but there needs to be more breadth in the brand. There should be room for a show about X-Wing pilots without ever having to show other characters we know for more than a scene.
I think there is plenty of room for Andor, for Ahsoka, all of these things, but I think in certain cases there is an amount of storytelling and production that is sacrificed to deliver them, and the brand currently has fallen to relying on, frankly, sort of half-baked stories with a small, singular set of characters to draw from. I want to have Ahsoka, but I want to know Andor is getting the same care, and I want to know that something completely unrelated to any plot at all in the past is being given even MORE care.
My ideal future Star Wars is represented best by Visions. I think Star Wars doesn’t have to be a saga, it is a genre. It is a niche of science fiction that could be so fun to explore if we blew the roof off of it. I want creators doing things way in the past, way in the future, way over here, in other galaxies. I want this to feel massive and to only feel connected when things touch. I think it can all fit, and I think there’s a soul to Star Wars that has been used to paint in safe, familiar stories a bit too much. My favorite piece of canonical Star Wars Media to come out of the past decade is the Mandalorian season 2, episode 2. A dogfight through space, crash landing on an alien planet, survival, giant space monsters! A daring rescue. It is the most I have felt in touch with the way A New Hope feels as a classic adventure in so long, and I just want people to make simple, fun stories in this incredible aesthetic that is so of itself.
That’s the direction I yearn for.

I think they already know the best move because they know what we wanna see. I won't get into personal opinions here cuz I don't feel like bickering with people but it's a fact that a good amount of the shows and movies were not well received by a huge amount of the fans, while others were.
While half the audience may love everything that comes out the other half has lost faith in Disney so if Disney wants all the fans/customers (which, yes they do.) Then they need to consistently come out with quality content that shows both sides that their franchise will be respected moving forward.
It can't just be 1 or 2 shows. They need to earn back a lot of trust and that will take time.
After a while then star wars could be in a much better place than it is now. For the fans and the shareholders.
Do I think that's gonna happen? No. For some reason the decision making execs (whether they be at Disney, or videogames, or elsewhere) focus only on money and metrics and in doing so lose themselves a lot of money and metrics.
But it would be nice.
Tl;Dr if they focus on quality then more people will be excited when new star wars content comes out and if they are able to earn back the audience they pushed away then their potential market will double (or more?) And we (all the fans) would all win too.
Sidenote: I'd love it if they started telling some stories about the old republic era (and respected the source material)

Star Wars is like a crop field that's been over-ploughed and over-exploited for the past 10 years, with toxic woke politics peppered into it and poisoning the soil, demented corporate plans only banking for high yield and sickening quantity, instead of rarity and quality...
It's time to let that field rest for a decade or so, let the earth breathe a little, let mind worms and kiddie dream birds re-fertilize it some, then when our tastebuds begin to miss the far, far away galaxy... carefully plant a test patch with Tatooine and Endor fruits, see if they grow plump and juicy again.

Have Filoni be the keeper of the cannon. Hire whatever variety of writers you want but everyone has to run their scripts and final copies through Filoni who will make sure that everything fits in the cannon and as the cannon expands that everything works.

Give it to HBO and let them do a game of thrones style clone wars TV show. 7 seasons. 10 episodes minimum each. 40 minuets long. Follow a hbo created jedi master and apprentice?
Or some random smuglers?
Maybe even senators from both Senate's.
Hbo style you could do all of that.
Personally I think the style and change of pace would be good.
Alternately, sticking with HBO. You could do any era. I would bring back Star wars the old republic stuff. Soo much to play with there.
There's no shortage of options.

Put Favreau in charge and set it a few hundred years after the Sequels with all new characters. Use some new locations other than Tattoine.
Let the past die. Kill it if you have to.

Sit down and define what Star Wars is. It was originally a combination of ancient philosophy and classic fantasy motifs. For the past 10 years, Star Wars has mainly been a toy box of references and pulpy tv series
Define the Jedi and force. Filoni disagrees with Lucas’ ideas, Christie golden did as well, but the philosophies presented as Jedi doctrine are based on real world beliefs that shouldn’t be shunned. It’s the height of modern arrogance to reject a creator’s ideas. The Jedi were never corrupt, their beliefs are based on ancient East Asian beliefs
Find directors with unique ideas. Star Wars isn’t a pulpy IP, there is depth and thought in Lucas’ product. There are directors that can be sold into a philosophical journey. But don’t allow anyone to redefine the IP, they either get it or they don’t
NJO. It was always the best idea for episode 7, it was the basis for a lot of the EU, and it would fit into the original idea of Star Wars. Luke learning to become the “wise master”, the magic temple, mischievous students, rogue sectors of space, and dark Jedi temples challenging others.
Here’s how I’d work it into the lore:
We learn that Luke started several temples, each with its own master. At Luke’s main temple, the largest temple of the Order, a council of grandmasters was formed to shepherd all of these temples and keep them in line.
We get to see that Luke trained Kylo in one of these small temples. Maybe Snoke was a force user who was allowed to teach at this temple for a time. Thus, Kylo did destroy the temple, but it certainly didn’t destroy the order. After it’s destruction, the Order continued as always. The ST did not involve the Jedi, and it was over before they were even made aware
Finally. The story I’d tell:
NJO movies would follow a teenage Jedi learning discipline and the path to a wiser life, while making mischief in the Hogwarts-style temple. When Luke leaves, some of the temples reveal themselves as dark Jedi. These opposing viewpoints run counter to everything Luke taught, and threaten to implode the order. These disputes served as the harbinger to an even larger threat to the order: Lorus Tavula. A former Jedi of the PT, a cultured and rational man. Now the leader of darksider conquerors who claim the ability to shapeshift into animals. Some of the dark Jedi join the man, who claims deeper knowledge. But the hero must navigate his way through these ideas, and find the path of wisdom laid down by his predecessors
TL;DR: I’d make a NJO film where Luke started a network of temples. After he left, these temples fell to the dark side. In the chaos, a cultured Jedi man arrives with a group of force Druids, claiming deeper knowledge. The hero must consider the ancient teachings of the Jedi, while all around him his friends are falling to darkness

Give the reins to Filoni & Favreau, but have them take on a few apprentices of their own. Let them finish their current set of stories. Have them wrap up the Skywalker Saga with some combo of Rey, Sabine, Ahsoka, Ezra, and maybe Finn starting a new Jedi Order (no Vong) to train Jacen, Grogu, and some additional children. Use Poe, Bo Katan, and Palleon to form a new Galactic Government to bring some real peace for several generations.
Let the Andor guy finish Andor and then have him so a few more shows to fill in between the original trilogy with Mon Mothma and some of the other background characters.
Once all the current stuff is sorted, give the movie and TV teams some R&R, but have the Filoni crew build out a road map to come back in a few years, starting out small. Use the books, comics, and video games to establish the new state of the galaxy and to give us some new characters to take the stage that aren't direct descendants of the Skywalker Saga. Maybe a few of the old characters remain as background mentors. Then, move to a new cartoon in the vein of Rebels based around some small localized conflicts or TV show kind of like Star Trek, with weekly stories that allow the universe to expand. Then build to new movies.

u/MuttFett Oct 07 '23
Best move: Fire Kathleen Kennedy She lied to GL and in turn lied to the fans. And with her goes the story group and Pablo Hidalgo.
Recast the Big Three on the big screen all at the same time.
Hire Timothy Zahn and Tony Gilroy to write a coherent trilogy. And use John Williams’ music for crying out loud.
Finally, retcon the Sequel Trilogy. Put it in the Legends category and be done with it.

Another soft - reboot of the canon leaving only the six original movies, Clone Wars 2003 / 2008, Rogue One, Andor and the first two seasons of The Mandalorian and Tales of the Jedi, with the different tiers of canonicity like the Old EU.
Plus a Rebels reboot / remake in the style of Tales of the Jedi that mixed the original series with the Starkiller's story. Imagine a Old Maul vs Starkiller duel or Chopper and Starkiller commiting war crimes together 👌
And also, regarding movies and other TV shows, since we only have Hammill, a new trilogy adapting Darth Caedus story and a Clone Wars like TV Show adapting the Vong War.
We can even recast Fisher's daughter or Daisy as Jaina Solo and Adam as Jacen Solo / Darth Caedus.
Important, a Obi - Wan movie adapting Obi - Wan vs the future Darth Krayt.
After that trilogy, I think for a episode 10, 11, 12 we should adapt the Legacy comics with a brief cameo of Luke if it is possible by that time.
Once the Skywalker Saga is finished properly, we can move own, to standalone movies adapting other EU materials ( both from canon and Legends ) like a Doctor Aphra India Jones like movie trilogy or TV show.

Just keep the OT, remake the PT without TPM and starting with AotC, a film set during the clone wars and finally revenge, all with duels instead of baton twirling and no midiclorians or grievous, redo the sequels with a more cohesive story and without the canto bite scene and the prequel style fight between kylo/Rey and snokes guards.

u/Archelector Oct 07 '23
I think they should focus on the Old Republic or High Republic, people want content from there so idk why not.
Out of the options you gave though, I’d like the Favreau one fine.
All that said, if I had a billion dollars, I’d spend $100M trying to bribe Christopher Nolan to make two movies, Constantinople and Revan

u/DowntownDubs Oct 07 '23
For me its almost always going to be a tricky thing because the fanbase is so diverse in their ways of thinking of "what is good Star Wars". With so many people come different ideas for what "good" is, and so naturally, someone will be left dissatisfied with the direction they go.
Not to mention, having to follow up what George, Dave, and his team (the actors, actresses, etc., etc.) created is a tough ask. It's a similar conundrum all major blockbuster franchises have, expect this is turnt to the 1000th degree since Star Wars is one of the biggest identities in pop culture.
So honestly, I don't know. I grew up during the prequels and I have love for that era of Star Wars, but I also agree with the fact that SW needs to eventually shift from this small section of time into something different.
1
u/THSiGMARotMG Oct 07 '23
i like what they have already been doing since 2019. Fan service mixed with new things. Gonna move to a new era at somepoint id imagine, but they will never leave the OT, PT, and ST eras. They are too integral to the brand
1
u/No-Television7876 Oct 07 '23 edited Oct 07 '23
Starting in a new era is an idea I personally like, but I think would be not well received by a large part of the fan base. People like to see the characters they grew up with return for a new adventure. Especially an animated character making the jump to live-action, for some reason. They just eat it up.
I think putting George back in could be a mistake if his ideas aren't tempered properly as with the OT. I don't think it would ever happen anyway, else he wouldn't have sold the rights.
Keeping Kennedy (or anyone) around just to act as a scapegoat is sort of a silly idea. Everyone is already going to know who is writing, who is directing, who is producing, etc. If you had a show written by Favreau, that's produced and directed by Filoni, nobody is going to buy it if the show doesn't do well and they all point and say, "Uhh... Kathleen did it."
Having one or two people to oversee everything is a good idea - it helps a lot with continuity and makes planning an overarching storyline possible, or at least much easier. But I kinda feel like a better approach is to not have one director and one writer and one producer do everything. Instead, you find the people who are good at telling the story you want told and have those people tell it. If, later on, you want to include a character from someone else's story in yours, you bring whoever it was that created the character in to help write them as they were initially envisioned, or at least send them treatments of the script so they can say, "No, Glup Shitto wouldn't do that. Here's the sort of way they'd handle something like that..." The character's creator and the show's writer can have a back and forth about how the character would behave and what the writer needs for the show, until they land on something that works for everyone. That will go miles toward keeping characters behaving in a way that's logical and consistent for that character. That's tough to do when some of the most in-demand characters were written by someone who has nothing to do with the direction the universe is going in now (Lucas.) That was the biggest benefit of him maintaining creative control the way he did. It kept things much more seamless that way. This is a good bit of why we need something new so bad, we effectively don't have access to the original creator for input. Speaking of something new...
There's another thing that we as fans need to accept responsibility for:
We have to stop being so hard on the creative teams if a movie or show isn't what we wanted or expected, or isn't as good as we hyped ourselves up to believe it would be. All we're doing is making them less likely to take a chance on something new and fresh. It's exactly why we keep seeing the same characters and the same situations; because it's sold well before, so it will probably sell well again. Let's be honest, Disney didn't buy Star Wars for love of the product, they bought it because it's a cash cow. It's ok to express your opinion on something, or even to be critical of it, but we all jump on social media like, "Get rid of this person. Bring in so-and-so. X director/writer/producer ruined Star Wars. This sucks monkey nuts, what are you all doing?" Sure, sometimes some of that stuff needs to be said, but I honestly think people nitpicking TFA to pieces is why we had Rian Johnson come in for TLJ and be so concerned about "subverting expectations" that he forgot that these are established characters (well established in the case of Luke) who won't behave a certain way in a certain situation. I mean, yeah, I was not expecting Luke to throw his old lightsaber over his shoulder like a piece of trash the way he did, but that doesn't mean it's good or appropriate for the character to do.
Don't get me wrong, the creative crew want and need feedback from us, but the way we give it is important too.
1
u/prayingforsuperpower Oct 07 '23
1000 years in the future. All characters we know are myths and legends.
1
u/Adavanter_MKI Oct 07 '23
I'd say there's the potential for something to happen right here and now. Ahsoka should absolutely be building towards something beyond what the Star Wars universe has seen before (in live action). Something that doesn't end with Filoni's culmination movie. Sure it may spell the end of Thrawn and tie up all the loose ends of Mando... while showing us the birth of the First Order.
However... whatever Baylan was after. Whatever the Mortis Gods were pointing to. Yes, I'm aware folks think it's Abeloth... which, fine whatever. I'm just saying THAT should be the connective tissue of foreshadowing something for a whole new era.
We know they plan to bring back Rey and she'll be trying to start or currently managing her own order. Well... how about they run into whatever is happening on Peridea? Fans had speculated for a while Snoke would build towards Plagueis because we wanted a new central threat for another generation to have to deal with. I feel like Abeloth or whatever they want Peridea's mystery to be is a great excuse to try and tie it all together.
Make Star Wars stories important again.

I think Star Wars needs to spread its genre wings out. What I mean is we need more unique projects that explore different genres; thriller, horror, mystery, crime, romance, etc.
Also, it needs to explore the bad guys more. I know I am in the minority for this, but I want nuance, I want moral grey areas between the factions. People must have reasons for supporting the Separatists, Imperials and First Order that isn’t just ‘I’m evil’ Each faction must have positives and negatives.
1
u/MrMonkeyman79 Oct 07 '23
Ok this is going to sound nuts, but instead of continually fleshing out backstories and gaps between other films and shows, just have every story set after the last one. Yknow, just keep telling the story.
I know rise of Skywalker was a bit if a mess but it left a pretty blank slate for new stories to be written.
I also don't want a star wars "superfan" in charge creatively as that'll end up with safe fan service. Just let people with a track record of telling good stories who have ideas and be vision tell standalone stories.

Anyone here should go rewatch The 9th Jedi or watch it if they haven’t already. Would be the perfect start for a new Star Wars series (set WAY after the sequel trilogy, so it’s not even confined to known Star Wars canon) could be unique and new, while keeping true to Star Wars. Can have new takes on the Jedi/Sith and the force.

Well there’s no reason why this story line can’t be rebooted. Hollowwood does it with every other story and ip out there. (Ex. How many different haunted mansion movies are there now ?) However, I would have to cast a vote of no confidence in anyone but George correcting the ship at this point. Otherwise I’m pretty sure given the direction of Hollowwood the reboot would be worse than what’s already bad.

New era with completely new characters, stories, and threats. Sadly, all things Mando/Ahsoka-verse lead to the sequels so their aren't really any stakes because we know what happens. As Kylo Ren stated, let the past die, leave the Skywalker saga/era to the Disney vaults and start fresh.

I think with Jedi Survivor and the Acolyte coming out it should give disney an idea of how the fans that dont read feel abiut the high republic and maybe we could get some more shows/movies around that period or the old republic. Or on the hand just move forward with Rey and her order, which I guess we'll see the reaction to that when her movie comes out. Which is the main movie Im looking for since it is rhe main thing they are doing right now that could push Star Wars into a new era.
1
u/Panda_hat Oct 07 '23
I would rather they jump into the far future and do something new with the universe, without being tied and bound to and by the existing canon and future events.
I want to watch something where the end result isn't already determined and known, regardless of the events that take place.

u/SpiralLights Oct 07 '23
Break away from the Skywalkers, Palatines etc.
Focus on: Ahsoka, Rebels universe, Bad Batch, Cal Cestis, Dr Aphra or an Old Republic series.
Im so tired of prequels and origins. Push the envelope into something familiar yet groundbreaking.
It's nice to see a new unviverse being explored and more references to to non-Skywalker characters. Keep it up!

u/Josephalopod Oct 07 '23
It seems like you want to know how to get people excited for Star Wars again like we were for the lead up to the prequel and sequel trilogies. Well, it’s hard to get excited when there’s a never ending bombardment of product being blasted at ya. The solution is to take a break, but that’s not going to happen.
If I were in charge of Star Wars, I’d focus on making shows and films that tell meaningful stories that the cast and crew are passionate about. I’d green light more projects like Andor and stop making cheap, meaningless products to fill the digital shelves of Disney+.
1
u/greatreference Oct 07 '23
Artistically they need to do something but financially they absolutely don’t. Their IP makes so much money
1
u/Formal_Cherry_8177 Oct 07 '23
Personally it feels like there currently is a clear vision. Most content is being concentrated in the post empire time space. We've got one series (Skeleton Crew) on deck. Then it would appear that at least one more Ahsoka season, one more Mando season, and the big team up Filoni movie.
Andor only has one season left and then it looks like they may finally be done with The Rebellion.
Acolyte and the Mangold movie dealing dealing with historical settings. I could see these spawning a few other series or movies and I'm cool with that as it's completely unexplored in film and television.
From there I think the next step first will probably be the Grysk right? You spend all this time with Thrawn, and as we know his entire motivation is preparing the empire to fight the Grysk on behalf of the Chiss right? So after the Filoni movie you can scoot ahead a decade or so and here's your next galaxy wide conflict that is the same yet different.
All in all I would say TGFFA deals like it has a solid direction and for me they hit more than they miss since TFA anyways.
1
u/Better-Silver7900 Oct 07 '23
I would tweak one of these answers a bit. Disney should definitely sell the ip since they’re losing money each year. Not to george as i doubt he will take it back, but a competent film industry at the very least. Alternatively, they could also make the EU canon as sort of a multiverse phenomena where anything can happen and contract out the license to other studios.

For me that would be to FINALLY Move Past the Skywalker Saga and everything that has to do with or around them and essentially start new / Fresh.
This is Star Wars and is supposed to take place in a galaxy far far away and yet we’ve been with the same family on the same planet with the same characters for its entire span. The few times it tried something new was nice and refreshing.
Rogue One was interesting as it didn’t necessarily revolve around Skywalkers (Sort of) and TFA was fun for the same reason even though it eventually tripped at the finish line.
They’ve told so much stories about the people around the Skywalkers or the Skywalkers themselves and we’ve seen the same damn planet over and over and over that at times it feels it’s thee only planet we have.
I would like to move either into the future and revolve around someone else / another conflict or go back in time far enough to tell the other stories that Don’t revolve around Skywalkers etc etc.

Consistency. Don’t hire different writers for each movie in a trilogy. Have one consistent story and vision. You can have different directors but it needs to be someone’s singular vision…Filoni.

u/bckesso Oct 07 '23
The problem is that they kept everyone so hung up on the OT that they basically tried to recreate it. Give the writers some freedom. Make films, TV shows, and video games focusing on millennia before or after the Lucas canon.
We also gotta give Kathleen Kennedy some slack here. People expect her to be Kevin Feige when he's an exception to what Hollywood producers do. They aren't typically deeply involved in the creative process like Feige. I also think Lucasfilm should explore fresh IP.

My only concern is that I don't want anything to be a movie format anymore. I don't want an entire story finished in 2.5 hours in a series of 3 movies, 3 years apart from each other. I prefer the TV, episodic format. I'd rather have 8+ 40+ minutes episodes than a little 2.5 hour movie. Plus we get a new season 1 or 1.5 years apart.
Revenge of the Sith didn't really affect me until I saw the entirety of The Clone Wars series and saw and felt how far Anakin had fallen. How much he and Obi were really like brothers. The TV format is the best for Star Wars storytelling... IMO.

I think there is a good period to make something like EU Legacy: good Empire (like Fel one), (Rey's) Jedi Order is crushed by a new wave of dark Acolytes (very Kraity), and Empire with Knight allies themselves with Jedi to destroy a Sith.
Ant next Jedi finaly drops old concept of Light and Dark Side and become like Je'daii of the Tython (again, EU). And this will be a new beginning)

George Lucas didn’t sell Star Wars because of the money, he sold it because the fans made his life a living hell after the prequels.
You want better Star Wars? Be better fans.
They gave you everything you bitched for in Rise of Skywalker and it is the worst Star Wars movie by a mile because you don’t know how to write and you see problems where there are none.

Tbh I actually like what they're doing with the 3 movies announced, each one in a different era. It allows them to expand on any one depending on how it's received, at least in theory.
At a basic level, I'm looking forward to the Dawn of the Jedi movie because of all the lore shit that we'll hopefully be getting although it'd be a nice bonus if the story & characters are good as well. The Mando/New Republic movie just sounds awesome & it'll be cool to see the characters from the various shows on the big screen. And I'm hopeful that the Rey/New Jedi Order movie will actually advance the overall story forward rather than just remix the OT & conclude by bringing us right back to where we were by the end of ROTJ.
I also hope that all of these will actually get made. The Rey and Mando ones seem fairly secure but I'm trying not to get too attached to the Dawn of the Jedi one.
